Watching BYU vs. USC. Taylor Sander had three aces in a row! He’s a beast! It’s 4 PM now and now there are three volleyball videos shown simultaneously. Will stick with BYU until it’s over and then watch Pepperdine vs. Long Beach and Stanford vs. Irvine alternately.

Half an hour later and BYU blasted USC away with a 0.519 hitting percentage! The did this with a backup setter. No one expected them to win that easily after a four-match losing streak. The most unusual rally was where USC thought they got an ace and celebrated while BYU saved the ball with a hustle and a quick spike while the Trojans’ back were to the net. They didn’t even see that ball coming down!

My final comment to this match: UH needs not to regret not having made the playoffs. BYU played lights out and they would have been on fire for revenge against UH. So UH was spared a road trip against a rejuvenated team. UH can start practice for next year with one goal in mind, to return to the playoffs.

  3. FormerlyWarriorfan April 19, 2014 4:41 pm

Uh would have kept it much closer than usc imo.!

  4. Don April 19, 2014 6:34 pm

I think there would have been many fan violations of the Code of Conduct at Smith Fieldhouse if Hawaii had made it to the playoffs and had to visit Provo…their fans are some of the most ruthless and crass-natured.

All the home court teams won today. Pepperdine won in four sets after losing the first. UCSB won in five after being down 2-1. Stanford’s final and fifth set was a nail biter for their fans in a seesaw match where Irvine jumped ahead 13-11 on a four-point run and then Stanford rescued their match on their own 4-point run to win 15-13. Of all the videos, Stanford was the poorest quality with so much buffering I gave up watching until the last few points. Pepperdine had a little buffering, second best quality and BYU video of the match was the best quality, second to none. So next Thursday Stanford will face Pepperdine and BYU will face UCSB. The second one will be broadcast online, not sure about the first one. Will find out next week.

    4. I’d take the BYU fans any time over Long Beach fans. The latter are the rudest of all. I’ve been there and seen them in person when watching matches against Cal Poly or Hawaii. That’s why when the Long Beach women came to play at UH some years ago, they were booed during announcement time. No other volleyball team was ever booed like that.

  7. Don April 19, 2014 7:29 pm

I was at that Regional Semifinal. That was because LBSU gave Hawaii their only loss in a tourney at LBSU. The back-story was that team had Danielle Scott, Taybbea Haneef, and others. During the handshakes, it was blatant that one of the LBSU players stared straight at Jessica Sudduth while slapping hands and twisted her heavily-wrapped thumb.

That was not only rude, but showed poor sportsmaship…Match point was a classic: LBSU played campfire defense on a tip shot that landed right in the middle of all 5 players. I recall people around me yelling if Brian G. needed marshmallows..He was offended when they booed, but his team greatly deserved it: cocky and disrespectful.

  8. jmy April 19, 2014 7:50 pm

    7. Actually Danielle Scott had already graduated by that time…

  9. Ki April 19, 2014 7:59 pm

I think you’re mistaking Danielle Scott for Cheryl Weaver. Cheryl is the one who requested Sudduth thumb.

  10. Don April 19, 2014 8:27 pm

Yeah, it was Cheryl Weaver…that names sounds familiar…too bad that match was not available on film..it was a classic.

Gotta agree about BYU fans during the match, but before and after they are very gracious. I hate that they have a student section crowded into the court – jump servers practically have to put their backsides into the spectators’ faces.

My husband noticed they are better-behaved when the TV cameras are focused on them. HA!

  12. karmady April 20, 2014 5:59 am

Oh, and the Warriors’ goal next year should be to win it all – not just the MPSF, but the NCAA title. Focus on the final prize, which they deserve….Wade’s ineptness notwithstanding….too bad they gave him the two year extension, seems Joe Wortmann would be looking to land somewhere….They will have to win in spite of Wade, in my opinion.

  13. geo April 20, 2014 8:43 am

BYU fans have been known to shine laser pointers into the eyes of servers. How’s THAT for sportsmanship?

  14. Ki April 20, 2014 9:45 am

The 2000 Hawaii Regional Semi’s vs LBSU was CLASSIC. Glad I still have that game on tape. The crowd was ROCKIN’ that evening in the SSC, and Hawaii was finally able to knock that monkey off their backs (prior to this match, LBSU ended Hawaii’s season in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, & 1994). Hawaii went on to defeat UCSB in 4 for a trip to the Final Four where they lost to eventual champion Nebraska.

  15. Cindy Luis April 21, 2014 8:33 am

13 and they’ve been reprimanded for it. When’s the last time that was ‘known’ to happen?

  16. Brandon April 21, 2014 8:40 am

Wow, I didn’t know the fued with the beach and hawaii was that bad. I mean this past year when they came to the Stanley, I could see them being a little cocky and Whiney, as was their coach. But I honestly didn’t know it wqs this had

  17. Cindy Luis April 21, 2014 8:41 am

    4. Don, there are violations at all arenas … I really dislike generalizations.
BYU a tough place to play, fans or no fans. However, I have witnessed many times where UH players were harassed for their ethnicity, both men and women.
It has happened at BYU, UCLA, UCSB, Cal Poly, The Beach, among others … so I wouldn’t single out BYU.

  18. Cindy Luis April 21, 2014 8:44 am

    6. that’s not why The Beach was booed. It was more against Gimmillaro than anything else.

  19. Cindy Luis April 21, 2014 8:52 am

    16. This ‘feud’ has been going on since 1989 probably. continued in the early 90s until UH moved to the WAC.

  20. volleyball fan April 21, 2014 9:12 am

    19. Cindy, was it because Long Beach knocked out the Wahine (at UOP Stockton regionals) from hosting its own Final Four? I remembered that disaster pretty well.

  21. Brandon April 21, 2014 9:19 am

    19. thanks! I learn something new everyday on this blog. I’m only 20, so I don’t know much about the wahine before 2003. I knew the beach and hawaii were rivals, but I didn’t know they had such a history and disliking. Us wahine fans are usually the nicest to the opposing team, so it shcoked me to find out a team was actually booed.

  22. Cindy Luis April 21, 2014 9:52 am

    22. again, it wasn’t so much the team as much as it was the coach.
    20. 89. it was quite the shocker, especially since Uh was hosting the final four for the first time.
But the Beach played well, beat UOP and then UH. It was the first year they used rally score in Set 5
I picked that year because it was the first time the 49ers beat Hawaii when it really mattered.

  23. Brandon April 21, 2014 9:55 am

    22. I could see a little bit of brains dementor last year when they came to hawaii. He seemed cocky and like a cry baby, but I thought I was the only one. Never knew it was that bad. Thanks for the wahine history Cindy! 🙂

  24. Ki April 21, 2014 12:22 pm

Hmm… Rally Scoring in the 5th game didn’t start until the ’91 season. Again, the Wahine lost to the Beach in 5. Both teams were without one of their starters due to injury that year; Toni Nishida for Hawaii & 6’2 red head lefty from the Beach ( i forget her name ).

  25. Forgottens, Again April 22, 2014 8:07 am

    Puni,

    Alicia Mills: LB

Hawaii’s * “ball-handling” * starters (as Nishida/J. Long were somewhat in the mix..more Long than Nishida but nevertheless neither of them were as consistant as Taeatafa would’ve been..so Babes Kalulu_Cubi-Otineru stepped into the OH2 spot for controll, primarily)

    1. Teee
    2. Babes

    1. Karrie
    2. Mary

    1. Cheri

    1. Malin

They could’ve been one of the best all-time. 🙁
