More info on Wahine trip to Europe, 6 Sunday matches
Had an earlier thread last Friday now have more details. There will be full story in Wednesday paper.
Oh, and thanks to football on Saturday, Wahine will have six Sunday matches. No word as to what Manu-Olevao will do 3 Sunday matches during the first four weeks, 3 others during conference play. Schedule will be released when contracts are finalized.
Rainbow Wahine making their first trip to Europe in May. Shoji said there were still some details to be worked out but this is the itinerary.
Leave May 15, return May 28
Fly into Milan, fly back through Prague.
Playing 5-7 matches against club teams and maybe a junior national team in Italy, Slovenia and Czech Republic. Scheduled to stop in Maribor, where former UH middle Maja Gustin lives. will be practicing the other days.
Sounds like everyone returning is going and Adolpho for depth at middle. Didn’t sound like Long or Mendoza were going.
Cindy You said a player is taking Huffs Schollie and waiting on paperwork. Does that mean a transfer is coming in? Or was the paperwork in reference to huff
Excited about the new player, kinda bummed about Sun, But would prefer she go to texas than USC or Stanford.
Right on. Get your passports ready ladies. Football better come up with some wins for that six days where the Wahine have to play on Sundays. These conflicts is a real pain. Now i’m eager to find out who this other player is that will get Huff’s schollie.
Im curious to see who the new player is going to be (if indeed one is coming in). Hawaii is pretty loaded at every position, but I wouldn’t mind a big time transfer coming in.
1. what I wrote, which was in reference to the tweet about ‘good news’
“or could be the new player that will take Huff’s scholarship since she’ll be on basketball next fall. Believe they’re still waiting on paperwork.
to clear it up.
New player will be on Huff’s volleyball scholarship.
Huff will be on basketball scholarship.
no announcement as to who the new player is because they’re waiting on paperwork.
Exciting, hope she is as a big time as Olivia was last year. Any hints to what position?
not too worried about tai missing all those sunday matches.
granato will be a great fit and i predict she will eventually take her starting position.
i have no idea who’d be interested in transferring.
the team is going to be so deep on the outside i’d hope it would be a middle.
mitchem playing opposite would just be a dream come true for me.
The guessing game begins as far as transfers. Is it some one from the Pac 12, or here’s a wild one maybe Texas.
Missing 6 matches is a big deal. Is Olevao on a scholarship? If so, and she should choose not to play on Sundays again, perhaps she should give her scholarship up to someone else who can play full time, and go to walk on status.
6. sorry, no hints, just know that they’re filling Huff’s scholarship. They are a little thin at middle depending on what they want to do with Mitchem.
7. agree team will be loaded this coming season and might not miss Manu-Olevao depending on the opponent. But 3 of the Sunday matches are early on. Can’t predict how many, if any, of the newcomers will break into the starting lineup by then.
For sure one of the Sunday matches is against CSU Bakersfield. If tradition holds that they have the ‘big name’ last, two would be some combination of UCLA, Oregon State and Florida. …
8. never said it was a transfer … but guess away.
9. let’s not start this debate, OK? Last season it digressed into some pretty ugly statements.
This is between her and the coach and ultimately will be their decision.
Although Olevao’s unavailability to play Sundays last season hurt the depth of the OH’s, the opposite should happen this fall barring any injuries. It will allow the bench playing time and experience in case we should need it later in the season.
I guess it could be a walk on on the current team getting a scholarship, but that wouldn’t be a “new” player.
10. Interesting guess it is a freshmen recruit, maybe foreign?
12 NEW player.
Someone on volleytalk is claiming its a UC Irvine player who is transferring in.
15 I doubt it. A player in the conference would have to sit out a year.
A freshman seems more likely
15: Cindy said “new” & never said it was a “transfer.”
Interesting if its a uc irvine player i bet it’s Bubica and she is graduating and coming here for grad school and using her final year of eligibility she spent four years at uci already one was as a redshirt.
Perhaps a UCI incoming recruit changed her mind with the recent departure of their coach. Harlee Kekauoha, a lefty 6′ Opp/S who has HI family connection through Big Island and I believe her HS coach is ex-Rainbow AA, is a wild guess. This is just pure speculation – not factual. Just having fun because I am bored.
The posteer said the player is 6’3 and they spoke to her today. Bubica will have to sit a year, So IDK if its her because won’t that exhaust her eligibility?
If u graduate u dont have to sit at all.
Bubica is the only player from uci Id imagine dave would want.
Ahh I see. Didn’t know that. I thought you had to sit no matter what would happen. But if it truly is bubica, holy damn that would be amazing. Her greeley and taylor on the pins.
Granato would redshirt.
That would be a seriously stacked line up
The VT poster says 6’3 from Irvine. Two redshirts graduating are Rosenfield and Bubica. So no need to sit out and able to play this Fall.
Both would be nice additions. Rosenfield would provide a nice depth at MB, and bubica would make an instant impact.
True. Transfer players do not have to sit out if they graduate. However, aren’t there rules for transferring within the same conference? I remember that 6’3 girl from UCLA who had to sit out because she transferred to Washington (P@C 12).
So, just for fun, here’s to speculation for speculation sake. If the incoming 6’3″UCI graduate player is indeed either Rosenfield or Bubica, my bet is on Bubica. Rosenfield is a MB and Bubica is OH. The VT poster said that he/she has already met the girl. So, I am making a big assumption that she is already enrolled on campus and going on the trip. If so, Cindy mentioned that Dave will bring “Adolpho for depth at middle” on the trip. If it was Rosenfield, a MB, Dave would not have to bring Adolpho for depth since they would have Rosenfield, Magill and Maglio. UH desperately needs a proven OH terminator like Bubica.
I’m not completely sure, but Conferences have their own rules on transferring within.
A student athlete must sit out 1 year when transferring within the conference. That is the conference rule. But if Bubica graduated or will be graduating she’s technically no longer a student athlete at Irvine and I don’t that sit out rule would apply.
27: I seem to recall that, when Michelle Waber left, someone mentioned that an intra-conference was a 2-yr. wait.
My last post was applying to graduating players.
hey cindy do you know perhaps shoji is or should be fighting to get football out of home match saturdays. arent football supposed to be played on sundays anyways? (ie super bowl).
regardless of sunday, its not a matter of not having tai but na wahine appears to all lack energy when playing sundays. last season the first 2 sundays vs san diego state and san francisco were kind of suckith and really suckith games respectively. only vs ucsb did it get interesting because of taylors unleashing it and long defending the net.
maybe its also because of the lack of tais jump spin serve that also made the team seem lacking in interest and firepower.
whatever. na wahine better have more energy on sunday matches and not just simply strength in bench. agree with #3, football better come up with some wins for those six days where wahine have to play on sundays. hell they need to be compelled to win all 6 of them or be threatened to have the football program cease to exist the following season.
9. LOL
On within BW 4 year BS graduating players, refers to the NCAA rule, which states that the player qualifies to participation without sitting, if she hasn’t transferred previously and still has a year of eligibility remaining. Bubica qualifies having redshirted a year, playing only 3 years. Her redshirt year was a medical. Not saying it’s her, just outlining the ruling for the BW transfer rules within the conference.
If it is a UCI player , I hope it’s Bubica instead of Rosenfield. Bubica as a 4th option would be great for UH ( Olivia, Nikki and Annie top 3 options )
I don’t think Rosenfield would beat out Maglio, Rosenfield hit .200 last year as a middle.
IF it is Bubica, I would definitely start her at OH. She hit .297 last year. Thats amazing for an OH. My starting lineup would be
OH1. Bubica
OH2. Greeley
OPP. Taylor
MB. Magill and mitchem
Libero: kahakai
Setter: higgins
Redshirt Castillo and Granato.
I still want Maglio Starting, her Potential is HUGE. She could be top 5 in the nation in blocking by the end of the season IMO.
IF, Bubica is coming,I would start start this lineup.
Bubica OH1 playing front row only/Greeley back row for her.
Taylor OH2 playing all the way around
Magill MB1
Maglio MB2
Higgins S
Mitchem OPP and can hit the slide like Jenny Roberts used to.
Kahakai at L
first players off the bench Tai and Casey. this means Castillo won’t redshirt or Huff will go back to the middle.
Or I would try a 6-2 with Tai hitting on the right along with Mitchem and Higgins and Koelsch setting backrow for them.
Shoji will have tons of options. It will be exciting, that is, if the new player is even Bubica… We could be totally way off.
Different conferences do have different rules. It also depends if a player is released from the scholarship. Tiegs did not receive her release from FSU when transferring to UH to play sand so she sat out a year..
If a student-athlete has graduated and has a fourth year of eligibilty, they can play as a grad student. Example is the EWU quarterback going to Oregon this fall as a grad student.
30. Waber didn’t transfer inter-conference so that didn’t apply … She played one year at UH, sat out redshirt year (left towards the end), played 2 years as SDSU. graduated. had one year of eligibility left. didn’t have a year to sit out if she wanted to play at DI. Plus SDSU didn’t have her grad program. So she and Collins-Parker looked for DII school that had her grad program. She ended up at Cal Baptist, which also was closer to home.
32. HEY, football has priority on the schedule and everyone works around that. College football is not played on Sundays.
27. big assumption because Shoji said 2015 incoming players won’t be on the trip.
Huff will be on the trip so they’re fine at OH with her, Taylor, Greeley, Manu-Olevao,
They’ll have Magill and Maglio at MB. Huff could be used there if needed. Koelsch could be used at OH and Kahakai in an emergency since they have other DS.
17. It was on another thread someone said transfer. Just wanted to clarify that I didn’t write that. Nor did I write that it wouldn’t be a transfer.
and the NEW was in reference to someone writing that maybe it was a walk-on now getting a scholarship. the point was new as in not on the current roster.
Just to throw this out. Bubica has had an injury-plagued career. Freshman year she was out with a medical. last season missed a few matches.
UH’s need more at middle and it’s not likely that they’d move Huff back there after training her as an OH last season. As good as Mitchem is, can’t tell how well she’ll make the jump to DI. She also doesn’t have a redshirt year. And they were also looking at her as an OH.
So what do all the signs point to? experienced middle. And experience within the conference would be a bonus. But that’s just me ‘-)
If it’s rosenfield, great, depth is always good, but im not that excited about her to be honest. Her numbers last year were just average.
Okay, you made it fairly obvious. No more fun.
I wouldn’t mind ashley murray from lbsu 😉
43. Tongo, I honestly don’t know who it is. Was just commenting on others’ guesses.
44. Murray likely would have to sit out in order to transfer. Don’t see Coach G releasing anyone to play at UH.
