So excited! This is my favorite day of the year, every year, but seems especially heightened today! Let’s Go ‘Bows!

  2. John August 28, 2015 6:45 pm

    Great news! Go Bows!!

  3. Hot August 28, 2015 6:45 pm

According to livestats, Ponce has already aced Idaho. It’s not even 7 pm yet.

  4. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 6:51 pm

    3. that is funny. Think I mentioned earlier in the week that Danny Kaleikini will be singing the national anthem and Hawaii Pono’i

  5. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 6:56 pm

Wahine in their home white new uniforms. It’s the same as what Kahakai’s libero jersey was at Saturday’s scrimmage. Kahakai wearing green.

  6. Hot August 28, 2015 6:57 pm

    Who’s starting for UH?

  7. Beauston August 28, 2015 6:57 pm

I’m pretty sure I just heard Higgins said Tai not playing Sunday’s…things will be interesting

  8. Hot August 28, 2015 7:00 pm

    7. That could be an opportunity for the newcomers to see playing time.

  9. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:01 pm

one of the better renditions of both songs by Kaleikini whose voice is bigger than the arena. Had a nice chat Monday when I ran into him downtown.

  10. surfboy August 28, 2015 7:02 pm

    Is the live stream working??

  11. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:05 pm

Starting as expected. Higgins, Magill, Manu-Olevao, Greeley, Taylor, Kahakai, Maglio.

    http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=98943

    not working yet.

  12. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:09 pm

Hawaii up 6-0, Higgins on a 5-0 serving run TO Idaho.

  13. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:21 pm

Wahine have pulled away at 18-13. UH without a hitting error 9-0-16. TO Idaho.

  14. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:30 pm

UH wins 25-18 only hitting error was on a slide attempt by Maglio that she had no chance to get to. although looking at the stats they aren’t counting it as such. she went pretty far behind Higgins so officially they have it as 14-0-25

  15. wildcard August 28, 2015 7:30 pm

tais serve needs a bit more sturdiness but her shot on the rightside was money. taylers serve was sturdy. savannahs serve steady.

  16. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2015 7:34 pm

Wahine looking good. The improvement in hitting from last season was evident in game 1. Great blocking. Still hoping to see better sets to the middle. Higgins tried a few early in the game but when Idaho drew close she started setting the pins almost exclusively.

  17. wildcard August 28, 2015 7:44 pm

getting disorganized in set 2. nikki fired her main gun on her serve. that is awesome.

  18. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:45 pm

    16. don’t know what match you’re watching sets to the middle have been fine. Magill 5-0-9. Idaho up 15-13 at the TTO.

  19. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:46 pm

    Taylor is 9-0-9

  20. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:50 pm

Taylor’s first hitting error looked to have landed in. . Even got Shoji off the bench to complain. Taylor then blocked. defense a little scattered at the moment. Idaho up 20-17. TO UH.

  21. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:54 pm

Koelsch in on the doubles as Wahine close to 23-21. Idaho calls TO

  22. z August 28, 2015 7:54 pm

    Impressed with Idaho setter.

  23. warriorfan August 28, 2015 7:55 pm

Sets to Magill have been much improved but to Maglio they have been bad. I’d like to see Mitchem come in. Kahakai isn’t playing as well as I hoped.

  24. H-Man August 28, 2015 7:55 pm

Wahine looks like the 2014 version in set 2. Hope they change things around because the starting unit looking very vulnerable as the wheels are wobbling (except for Nikki Taylor).

  25. warriorfan August 28, 2015 7:56 pm

    Koelsch should play more.

  26. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2015 7:56 pm

    18. Granted, no sooner than I typed that Higgins had three consecutive perfect sets to Magill.

  27. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:57 pm

And just like that it’s 24-23 UH, last point on Taylor’s ace. TO Idaho.

  28. warriorfan August 28, 2015 7:57 pm

I’d like UH to do the double sub that the US national team does, if they won’t be doing the 6-2.

  29. warriorfan August 28, 2015 7:58 pm

Koelsch and Nikki willed UH to that comeback win.

  30. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 7:59 pm

Koelsch with her second dump shot and UH wins 25-23 using a 6-0 run to end it.

  31. wildcard August 28, 2015 7:59 pm

kendra is one snifit of a setter!

  32. Willie August 28, 2015 8:02 pm

Time to give #2 a shot at libero? #15 looks shaky, other than her serves in think they need more stability and better passing from this position tonight.

  33. kimo browner August 28, 2015 8:02 pm

kendra, kendra, kendra, yes, yes, yes! About time.
    Now, play Huff.

  34. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:03 pm

    32. not a good night for Kahakai but still think she’s the best the wahine have, would like to see Guinasso, Huff and Mitchem play in set 3.

  35. Beauston August 28, 2015 8:04 pm

Give the girls a break. It’s sloppy yes, but what set 2 really showed was 1st game of the season jitters as I expected. It was very evident with Tai, Kahakai and Maglio.
Also, give credit to Idaho, they are playing loose after everything they went thru leading up to this match.

  36. wildcard August 28, 2015 8:04 pm

savannah steady at her serve not so steady at libero.

  37. z August 28, 2015 8:04 pm

I think Clare did a nice job when she was in there.

  38. surfboy August 28, 2015 8:04 pm

    Is the stream working?

  39. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2015 8:07 pm

Nice comeback, those kinds of finishes are great for a team’s confidence. Now let’s see some more consistent passing in set 3.

  40. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:08 pm

    35. elite programs have high expectations , sorry.

  41. wildcard August 28, 2015 8:08 pm

nikki and olivia seemed to be only ones meaning business.

    35. whatever it is, they dont want to slack off vs wichita state or oregon state. though the former seemed to have dominated the latter earlier today.

  42. 'ohanaInBellingham August 28, 2015 8:08 pm

Thank you for the double-sub of Kendra and McKenna, Coach!

  43. kimo browner August 28, 2015 8:09 pm

either #4 or #13 are steady in the back row. Shoji needs to give them a shot.
He falls in love w his starters.

  44. z August 28, 2015 8:11 pm

Looks like Dave wants to get Tai into the game.

  45. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 8:12 pm

Mitchem in, puts down her first swing

  46. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:13 pm

Granted Idaho is not a strong team, but Olivia and Nikki look like first or second team all americans.

  47. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 8:17 pm

things a little sloppy for UH. Was 9-4 now 9-8. TO UH

  48. wildcard August 28, 2015 8:17 pm

are they chillin? this not the time to be chillin. lets go bows!

  49. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:18 pm

Not Kahakai’s night, hope it’s just a fluke.

  50. Beauston August 28, 2015 8:19 pm

40, yup, tell Wisconsin coach about it. Lol! People needs to calm down.

  51. z August 28, 2015 8:20 pm

    They dinking Nikki.

  52. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:20 pm

Shoji needs to play Koelsch more, she makes things happen.

  53. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 8:23 pm

Granato in for Manu-Olevao in the back row. Taylor blocked and Idaho up 16-13. TO UH

  54. H-Man August 28, 2015 8:24 pm

Yes, Kahakai is off, but Shoji does not make a change. But that’s his style. Hawaii aced as Idaho takes the lead 15-13. Now 16-13. Disappointing coaching performance.

  55. wildcard August 28, 2015 8:24 pm

savannah not doing good at defend jump serves.

  56. Willie August 28, 2015 8:25 pm

Believe that was 3 receive errors in a row for #15, including the Idaho ace.

  57. Willie August 28, 2015 8:26 pm

Believe that was 3 receive errors in a row for #15, including the ace by the Vandals.

  58. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 8:27 pm

Mitchem and Higgins team up on a block UH closes to 17-16. TO Idaho

  59. Warrior Dave August 28, 2015 8:27 pm

    Nice crowd tonight.

  60. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 8:29 pm

tickets 6845. turnstile 5391. looks fuller

  61. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 8:32 pm

Koelsch in UH had gone ahead at 21-19. TO Idaho

  62. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:33 pm

Idaho is playing hard, especially defensively, for rpi’s sake, hope they win their conference.

  63. wildcard August 28, 2015 8:33 pm

kendra going in causes na wahine to valor up.

  64. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 8:36 pm

    UH wins 25-19. back later

  65. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:36 pm

I don’t see that much dropoff between Koelsch’s sets and Higgins, Shoji should do a double sub every time.

  66. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2015 8:36 pm

Shaky passing early in set 3 but it settled down. Lots of positives tonight.

  67. Willie August 28, 2015 8:37 pm

Correction, #4 as a possible libero or back row sub for #15 if she does not improve?

  68. haleiwacrossfitter August 28, 2015 8:38 pm

Not sure why Dave is not choosing to play Huff. Or just change things up. Tai is having a horrible match…passing, hitting and serving. Would love to see Taylor moved to left and Huff come in. Give Kendra a chance.

  69. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:40 pm

UH definitely needs to play much better tomorrow, hopefully Kahakai will be back to her usual play and granato can come in and pass for Olevao and more of Koelsch.
I think Annie will eventually be starting.

  70. haleiwacrossfitter August 28, 2015 8:40 pm

Kahakai needs to get her passing going as well. Is she our best passing DS?

  71. z August 28, 2015 8:41 pm

Huff backs up Nikki. We really needed Nikki in there tonight.

  72. haleiwacrossfitter August 28, 2015 8:46 pm

yes, but Nikki can go to the left. Easy fix

  73. warriorfan August 28, 2015 8:47 pm

I think we for sure will see more of Huff on sunday. If huff looks good, UH will have to consider a lineup of three hitters in the front court at all times.

  74. Maverick August 28, 2015 8:48 pm

UH looked like a top Pac-12/Big 10 team in terms of its up front size. Lots of tall, physical players (Annie physically is a beast–reminds me of the Nebraska middles of the past). No more “UH is an undersized team”. No reason why they can’t take Washington in Seattle this year if they tighten up the passing and continue to spread the hitting opportunities as they did tonight. Very exciting.

  75. 'ohanaInBellingham August 28, 2015 8:52 pm

    74. Maverick. If you mean the Regional, it will move to San Diego this year. It’s unfortunate since I can drive to Seattle easier than San Diego.

  76. 'ohanaInBellingham August 28, 2015 8:53 pm

    Creideamh, Nikki!

  77. haleiwacrossfitter August 28, 2015 8:56 pm

#75…we usually play in Washington for the first and second rounds. Not regionals

  78. 'ohanaInBellingham August 28, 2015 9:01 pm

    77. Is that because UW has been so dominant so they get to host? Ah, I thought that it was because they were the host of the regional. Thank you for the correction.

  79. PBnJz August 28, 2015 9:05 pm

Not disappointed at all…Tai did fine…when she needed to come out of back row, Dave pulled her! Great subbing of Kendra…she can come in and finish off every game (at least) as far as I’m concerned! Got to see Annie…couple nice contacts…not sure why she doesn’t slap hands with all of the other subs when she comes out of the game like I believe everyone else does– instead just takes a seat on the bench waiting to go back in…hmmm. Room for improvement, but overall, a good start! Go ‘Bows!

  80. haleiwacrossfitter August 28, 2015 9:08 pm

Maybe Dave is not willing to show all his cards? Saving Huff to unleash against Wichita St? I don’t know… but I hope he goes to the bench much earlier than he did tonight.

I like that Tai gets better as the match goes on, but we can’t wait a game and half before she starts going. Not against any decent team.

  81. Maverick August 28, 2015 9:08 pm

Another interesting result: #22 USC beat #7 UNC 3-1.

  82. blunite August 28, 2015 9:29 pm

Mental errors, lack of focus, whatever you call it passing and digging were sub-par. When Nikki playing right back has to pick up the balls in the middle, with Kahakai sitting backrow middle, there is a problem. Everyone else is dropping to the floor to pick up balls. Kahakai had 4 overpasses on serve and Shoji replaces Olevao, later Higgins. Maybe UH should follow Pestolesi’s lead and play without a libero, it would give him another backrow attacker.

  83. kimo browner August 28, 2015 9:29 pm

    Shoji won despite himself.
The Huff snub is a classic Shoji enigma…I have no clue.
Two upper class wahine he started last year eventually ended up on the bench. One left the program. It took him nearly half the season to make the change. It was painful to watch.
Kendra Koelsch intimidates hitters when she teams with her OHs. Her presence forced Idaho to alter their shots. She has so many weapons on O and D and causes problems for opponents. Her potential is exponential–AA type talent. It is puzzling she doesnt start. Marcus felt the pain also when he was overlooked at SLHS for another Higgins.
On a positive note Coach played Granato in the back row. She is true grit and doesnt wilt in the heat. Great move. Coach also worked in Mitchem. Our middles may be the best in the country. I heard a TV commentator coining a name for the middies–the 3Ms.
There is too much talent on this team to ignore when other players start stuttering on the court.
    Hopefully Coach will play them.

  84. John August 28, 2015 9:44 pm

    At 83
Kimo, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Spot on about Kendra!!

  85. warriorfan August 28, 2015 9:44 pm

Looking at the stats, 3 digs for Granato in very limited play, she should play backrow for for Tai, who just isn’t a good passer.

Kahakai only 6 digs, not good, she needs to play better tomorrow and sunday. Sa,e with Greeley who had only 1 dig. wow, Greeley was great offensively though.

  86. Ron August 28, 2015 9:53 pm

Is Idaho that good or did we just make them look good? I guess we will find out later in the season. I would give the over-all team a B in this one. In my opinion the individual grades are thus:
    N.T. A+ Flat out terrific!
    O.M . A- Great offense, blocking so-so
Tai B Some good work but too inconstant for a senior
T.H. B Improvement over last year but not quite there yet
S.K. C+ Made some good plays but seems to zone out on occasion
K.K. A+ I love what she brings to the court
E.M. C+ Decent defense, no offense
A.M. B Once she is acclimated her presents on the court will be huge
K.G. B+ Very solid and stronger than last year
Anderson and Granado didn’t enough for me to get a feel.
This is my therapy, and it is a harmless outlet for any frustrations I might have about the team.

  87. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 10:15 pm

after one match, not sure why this outcry for Huff. Yes, she has been banging balls during camp and looked good in the scrimmage but that doesn’t mean she should start. A lot more to that position than being able to hit.

Sure, Taylor can hit LS but the plan has been for her to be on the right. And she is very effective there.

Pestolesi did not play without a libero. What he did was play Mitchem all six rotations so the libero did not sub for her. Libero also an All-American at IVC.

Passing was inconsistent for sure. when it was there it allowed them to run the offense. It was sloppy at other times.

Even though they had 10 blocks, the block was slow to form on the right side

We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Wichita State very scrappy and runs a different type of offense where the setter blocks middle. She’s about 6-0.

  88. Cindy Luis August 28, 2015 10:28 pm

    85. weird thing about digs. the ball has to come your way in order to get one.

one last comment on Manu-Olevao. of her 3 errors, 1 was a poor call where the ball looked very much in. In Set 3 her solo block ties it at 19 and she had 2 kills and a block assists in the final five points.

  89. heluhelu August 28, 2015 10:33 pm

Agree responsibility rests with coach. Just like last season, when Mendoza was often ripped despite excellent quix to the ball, anticipation & consistency. Kahakai looks like the same up/down libero she was as a frosh. Mendoza saved buku points, kept many balls in play which Wahine will miss this year. Add TMO to mix and Wahine feature same backrow flaws that killed them last year. New length plus talent won’t go far if passing is worse, not better, under pressure.
