Marks' problem due to signing pro contract

Stephen Tsai, who is the Warrior beat writer, put this out. Pretty much what was assumed about a contract or agent contact. also answers the questions about forfeiting matches since he did not play after signing.

UH volleyball player JP Marks reached an agreement last week on a future contract with a team in Europe. Marks, we’re told, assumed because the arrangement would not activate until after his UH career ended — he does not plan on returning for his junior season — that it would not affect his eligibility. In fact, it appears to have jeopardized his amateur status.

Marks did not play in any matches after the agreement was reached. It appears the Warriors will not be required to forfeit any matches.

Well good luck to JP back in europe. He will be missed. I hope Wade has some kids in the pipeline that he can bring in that can play outside hitter and pass and play defense like a libero.

I hope siki is able to play Saturday and that Jace has the match of his life.

What you’re effectively claiming, with your post(s), is that admin. doesn’t know wth is going on on their team.

You CAN’T tell me, in no uncertain terms, that Wade had NO CLUE before this ever would’ve happened.

  4. Cindy Luis April 15, 2013 9:34 am

    Not claiming any such thing.
haven’t spoken with Charlie so don’t know when he knew about this. My feeling is that he knew Marks wasn’t returning and he obviously knew there was a problem with him signing the contract, which is why Marks didn’t make the road trip.
my take: Marks signed in good faith, believing it wouldn’t affect his amateur status until the contract went into effect. Whether he asked the UH coaches for advice or not, don’t know. Either way, Marks was misinformed about the situation.
very harsh to say ‘no clue about their team.’ The coaches aren’t babysitting their adult players every minute.

Bad judgment on Marks’ part…Should have consulted the coaches first. I would think this kind of thing would be covered in a student-athlete handbook.

  6. WaWa April 15, 2013 2:41 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong…when JP first came to UH, didn’t he make a comment about Jonas leaving early. I remember some comment he had regarding the early departure of Jonas…and now look. I agree with #5.

I’m confused with the lineup now. With Marks gone and Zarkovic unavailable, what is the current lineup? Is Brooke Sedore playing left or right? Is Averill still playing middle or right? Aside from Olsen, who has been playing right

I’m confused with the lineup now. With Marks gone and Zarkovic unavailable, what is the current lineup? Is Brooke Sedore playing left or right? Is Averill still playing middle or right? Aside from Olsen, who else has been playing in Marks/Zarkoic’s spot/s? Phelps? Timmer? And is Cheape still the libero or has Kanetake sneaked past him?

  9. Cindy Luis April 15, 2013 3:46 pm

They’re expecting Zarkovic back for Saturday
Sedore is at opposite, which is your right side hitter
Your middles are Averill, Holt, West
L1 is Zarkovic, At the moment L2 is Olsen
they’ve also used Phelps, Timmer & Etim-Thomas on the outside.
If Zarkovic unavailable then they’ll likely use what they used against UCSD
    Sedore Opp
    Averill, Holt MB
    Timmer & Olsen OH.
Saturday’s serving rotation was, in Set 1
Ramos, Olsen, Holt, Sedore, Timmer, Averill
Wechsung subbed for Ramos, Phelps subbed in for Holt to serve,

  10. Cindy Luis April 15, 2013 4:17 pm

Cheape and Kanetake both used as libero. Kanetake got the start Friday, Cheape Saturday

  11. Alohilani April 15, 2013 4:23 pm

6, you are correct. Marks did make a comment about Umlauft leaving early. Also remember someone asking Marks if he would stay for four years. He said he would. Seems to be a pattern with German players. Maybe Wade should think twice before recruiting Germans. Hope Siki isn’t thinking of eventually leaving.

  12. Cindy Luis April 15, 2013 4:42 pm

don’t think 2 players a pattern makes, but Umlauft’s brother did the same thing, played 1 year I believe.

  13. Cubicle1126 April 15, 2013 5:09 pm

alohilani — marks and umlauft left the program for very different reasons. hardly a pattern.

this is the risk in recruiting any international players. they have no roots in this country, so it’s no guarantee they’ll stay through their eligibility. they often come in already with some international experience, and the pro contracts could easily entice them away.

    good luck to JP.

good thing the coaches discovered this when they did. or else the ucsd matches could have been forfeited, and the team SOL for the playoffs.

  14. Alohilani April 15, 2013 5:14 pm

Bottom line, they left. I know they left for different reasons, but bottom line they left before their eligibility was up. Pattern.

  15. X April 15, 2013 5:29 pm

I’m with Alohilani. There does seem to be a trend. Remember that guy last year from Northridge that the TV commentators said Wade was looking at before deciding on JP? Well, somebody on Volleytalk said earlier this year that he left Northridge. I checked the roster and Julius Hoefer really is not there anymore. Also, remember in Jonas Umlauft’s freshmen year, Hope University came and Leahey, I think, made a big deal about how one of the guys played club ball with Jonas? Well, I checked that roster too and Johannes Fuchs is only listed in one year. I think as humans, we tend to look for connections that might not really exist. I do think it’s suspicious.

  16. Cindy Luis April 15, 2013 5:35 pm

    I don’t think it’s suspicious.
What I can tell you about Umlauft, and it may be true for the other Europeans.
The educational systems of the U.S. and Europe are different. American colleges tend to want you to get a well-rounded education. where in Europe they tend to do one degree program with only that subject.
Umlauft was an engineering major. He didn’t care for the liberal arts classes because he was here to study engineering. right or wrong, that’s the mindset.
Umlauft was going to only stay for one year. Nejc talked him into 2.

Clay Stanley left with a year remaining. Pattern?

  17. Cindy Luis April 15, 2013 5:42 pm

Then let’s take the Israelis. Katz stayed for 2 years, Milo 3, Leoni 4
Katz went to play pro, Milo went into business, Leoni stayed

  18. vballfreak808 April 15, 2013 6:57 pm

    9. Etim-Thomas got to play outside?

  19. Cindy Luis April 15, 2013 8:06 pm

    18. etim-Thomas 0-1-1 Saturday, got aced. played sparingly in 2 sets Friday, no attempts 0-0-0.
listening to radio both nights i would swear he got more sets.

  20. Warriorfan April 15, 2013 8:12 pm

I feel like Etim Thomas’ athletic ability has been wasted on the bench all year.

  21. Warriorfan April 15, 2013 8:14 pm

I wouldn’t stop recruiting germans just because they don’t stay all four years. I would take one/two years of players like Jonas anyday over any other players.

  22. vballfreak808 April 15, 2013 8:26 pm

    20. I agree, he has a great leaping ability but I guess height trumps it in this case.

I don’t know how is passing abilities are but I would kind of want to see him play outside since his height is around average for an outside and he has speed.

  23. vballfreak808 April 15, 2013 8:28 pm

Is Stephen Maar still available to come if he wants to?

NOT SAYING HE IS INTERESTED (NOT STARTING RUMORS)

  24. Warriorfan April 15, 2013 8:44 pm

The thing is , I wish Etim Thomas was redshirted instead of just playing in like 4-5 matches all year.

Maar? I sure hope so, he played one year in canada. Maybe Brook Sedore who played on the junior national team with Canada with him can convince him to come over.

I know Kevin Tillie went to UC irvine after playing in canada for a few years.

  25. Cindy Luis April 16, 2013 9:09 am

    20. agree that Etin-Thomas is athletic but not at the skill-level needed to be an OH. He’s converting from MB and still fairly new to the game. played 2 seasons in high school. He’s still working on his net presence, footwork when teaming for a block at least in UH’s scheme.
as for burning a redshirt year. believe he’s already used it while at LBCC. or prior to going to school.
Graduated in 2009. Played for LBCC in 11 and 12.

  26. FeedThe Middles April 16, 2013 1:08 pm

Etin-Thomas played at middle only. Not outside. That was Sat night…set 3 only. Fri night he subbed in as a blocker, during service.

  27. Cindy Luis April 16, 2013 4:36 pm

Thanks FTM, I did not see the matches. was under the impression that he was being moved to OH. my mistake.
