Hawaii-WSU rewind, Hartong MVP

will start with the basics, which is the brief story that is up on our website. will be back later with quotes from Shoji.

won’t have time for much more until I get into the office, probably atound 530 HST

Senior All-American Emily Hartong put down a match-high 13 kills, all coming in the first two sets, and sophomore hitter Tai Manu-Olevao added 10 as No. 7 Hawaii made its first road trip of the season a successful one when sweeping host Wichita State today 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 to win the Shocker Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan.

It was the fourth championship for the Rainbow Wahine in as many tournaments. Although the event isn’t officially over until Sunday when Wichita State and No. 23 Creighton meet for second place, Hawaii was awarded the championship trophy before leaving with Hartong named the MVP. She was joined on the all-tournament team by senior setter Mita Uiato and junior middle Kalei Adolpho.

The Rainbow Wahine (11-1, 3-0 SVC) ran their winning streak to nine when snapping the Shockers’ winning streak at 10 in front of 3,251 at Charles Koch Arena. Senior libero Ali Longo had 20 of Hawaii’s 45 digs against Wichita State (11-2, 1-1).

Hawaii return to play an exhibition against Toyota Auto Body of Japan on Wednesday. The Wahine open their Big West title defense Friday when hosting Cal State Fullerton.

thank you for point that out. sometimes in my haste to get it up, there’s a mistake. appreciate the help. have fixed it above and online ‘-)

  3. Warriorfan September 21, 2013 4:56 pm

I didn’t see today’s match but I hope Aly got herself a spot on the all tournament team. She was solid with 57 digs over three matches.

  4. Cindy Luis September 21, 2013 5:03 pm

From Shoji: Said he was happy with the sweep, that they didn’t want it to go four. WSU was finding a rhythm and the crowd was strting to get into it. Thought they played well down the stretch in all three games.
Said it feels really good to win three matches on the road against quality teams who likely will make the NCAA tournament. Thought they grew as a team on the road trip.
To sweep, especially when tied at 23-23, was fulfilling. it was a big crowd “hostile” but not really. That WSU was very supportive of their team and of volleyball. They never let the crowd get into it. and he was pleased that WSU was only able to make a few runs.
Asked what he was thinking at 23-23. said he was glad it didn’t go four.
Wasn’t happy when Mendoza served into the net coming out of the time out. which made it 22-21. that that can’t happen coming out of a timeout (they had a 22=20 lead.
24th point given to Uiato on the overreach when they tried to block her setting (I asked for a clarification)
said they’ll fly home, take Monday off, treat Wednesday as an exhibition that it is and then gear up to open conference play

  5. Cindy Luis September 21, 2013 5:12 pm

Now for some answers to questions we all had.
Asked if he was happy about the serving, particularly by a couple of people.
He said that they would re-evaluate the substitution pattern (think he didn’t want to get into detains in front of some of the players0.
Asked about the travel roster, was he limited to 13. He said no, that he normally brings 12, brought 13, conference allows for 14, which he rarely does but has when the trips are to California.
Asked why no bring Lelepali and or Kawamura. He said they didn’t feel they had to
Asked if Hartong got set too much. He said she had 20 swings in Set 1 so he thought that was too much and that he wanted to see it spread around more.
pointed out she didn’t have a kill in Set 3. he said he didn’t realize that but that it meant other players stepped it up.
asked about what a smart non-sub he was able to have when Higgins was stuck in the front row and got her firt BA. He laughed, said Higgins insists she touched the ball. He said Vorster got most of it. but that Higgins came out with a big smile.
Said he’d like more of a middle attack but that it was sometimes dictated by the passing.

  6. Cindy Luis September 21, 2013 5:16 pm

    3. the tournament not officially over until tomorrow when WSU plays Creighton.
However they did do an awards ceremony to give UH the trophy
and gave all-tournament awards out to
    Hartong (MVP) Uiato and Adolpho.

  7. mei mei September 21, 2013 5:20 pm

Thank u Cindy ~ Congrats to the team & coach!

  8. hollycow September 21, 2013 5:27 pm

Same three players, just swapped Em and Mita for MVP.

  9. Ron September 21, 2013 5:32 pm

Thanks Cindy, We volleyball “junkies” would be lost without you and the rest of the bloggers. I sure hope that Longo knows how important she is to the team. She is one of the best transfers ever! ps Actually we have had quite a few come to think of it.

  10. LanaiBoy September 21, 2013 5:34 pm

I think I said this too many times already, but the serving specialists are just making too many serving errors. I have mixed feelings on this since Mendoza and Kawamura, especially have had good serving runs; their jump floats often result in disrupted passing. I’m not too sure what Shoji will do. He used Kastl this match but her serves seemed very returnable.

  11. Warriorfan September 21, 2013 5:44 pm

Thanks for Q and A with the coach, Cindy.
Too bad Aly didn’t make all tournament.

  12. heluhelu September 21, 2013 6:18 pm

Lol at match coverage from the Witchita Eagle [ bit.ly/17SXiA0 ]:

“The most surprising part of Hawaiiโ€™s victory was that it did not come from an overwhelming performance from outside hitter Emily Hartong, a 6-foot-2 All-American. It was from the efficient swings of little-used players such as Nikki Taylor (nine kills) and Kalei Adolpho (seven kills) that hurt the Shockers the most.”

“Little-used players such as Nikki Taylor and Kalei Adolpho?” Did someone from UH feed these guy bad info? If so, good job.

  13. heluhelu September 21, 2013 6:19 pm

Ditto mahalo to Cindy for early post-match quotes

  14. Purple&Gold September 21, 2013 6:27 pm

BG believes that his 49ers can take a couple of matches from UH this season..I could also see this happening should the STARs align correctly.
& wouldn’t that be the frick

What BG doesn’t know is that those same “STARs align(ed)” 49ers are also, themselves, going to lose twice to CSUN.

CSUN will lose twice to UH and once to Cal Poly to make it all the more kosher/intricate.

We’re in for one wacky BW Conference season, gang, hang on tight to those hakus (Cindy will recall that the lei easily falls off remembering those regatta days, particularly at states).

  15. Purple&Gold September 21, 2013 6:34 pm

heluhelu, you’re ‘reading’ ๐Ÿ˜‰ too much into it.
EH is not that skilled is what “these guy” could’ve/should’ve/would’ve said if it were being posted to something ananomous like say a blog or something.

He was on a live/Wichita Eagle feed and isn’t able–as poor Cindy–to just speak one’s mind.
    *Thnx eh, Cin.

Glad to see Nikki hitting for a better pct., we’ll need more of that as the season progresses. I know someone else who’s agreeing with me.

  19. Beauston September 21, 2013 7:09 pm

Been out and about and since coming back to a great news of the Wahine sweeping WSU, as I review the last few enties, I ran across this post-

    Purple&Gold Says:
    September 21st, 2013 at 6:04 am
    52.
    “Still the wrong lineup, imo.”
    โ€”
“Iโ€™ll be the one to say it..
UH loses to WSU tonight in Wichita.
WSU catches their own hot streak ala USD and really MOVES onward/upward as of today, Sat. Sept 21, 2013.”

    What was that P&G?

  20. Beauston September 21, 2013 7:11 pm

At 14- you might be right but then again, your track record would say otherwise.

  21. Haolebob September 21, 2013 8:00 pm

Just got my copy/online of the paper. Thanks for keeping me up to date on the Wahines. Cindy, keep up the great work.

  22. Purple&Gold September 21, 2013 8:53 pm

At 20- Certainty. Consistency. Doubtless-ness. CONFIDENCE.
    There have been better days!

  23. Hot September 22, 2013 1:49 am

See? I wasn’t imagining things when I remember him always bringing 12, especially during WAC days. Wasn’t sure about the limit, but pretty sure he brought 12.

  24. menehune September 22, 2013 4:22 am

Purple&Gold needs a new crystal ball. The one he’s been using to predict games is cracked.

  25. Kazu September 22, 2013 5:37 am

Its amazing how these ladies can play from one night to another. One night you can be telling yourself what are they doing, and the next night its like where have you all been. Congratulations Wahine.Big task starts from Friday with the start of the regular season.Go Bows !!!

  26. jcvolcano September 22, 2013 7:00 am

    12) exactly the impression shoji wanted to achieve by using Hartong as “decoy”. This team has other “hitters”.
Shoji was very vague in his answer to the Hartong question but I believe he was once again strategizing.
    Another weapon in his quiver.

  27. Purple&Gold September 22, 2013 7:02 am

Here’e one for the crystal ball people.
WSU beats in #23 (w/fluke ranking) Creighton, another Big12 team *likely* cracks tomorrows poll, UH despite efforts falls down in ranking(s).

    interesting…

  29. Grammy September 22, 2013 7:26 am

The Wahine took anther step toward becoming a team this week. Seniors can talk, coaches can talk, but people have to ‘walk the walk”, too. And Tai, Kalei, and Nikki along with role players stepped into contributing roles this time, but we all know this is just “rehearsal/prep” for Senior Night and NCAAs so good job but it isn’t over and there are so many challenges still to meet and defeat left for Wahine before season/careers close. Can do! Well within your abilities. Go Wahine!

  30. LC September 22, 2013 8:04 am

    28) They were so focused on Hartong it wasn’t funny and Shoji saw that.

How about that bright lime green jersey Longo wore ?

  31. hollycow September 22, 2013 9:39 am

    30. When the team wears that bright lime green, suggest the fans to wear shades. The opponents will see a black blurr (Longo) amongst lime green. Team under construction?

  32. hollycow September 22, 2013 9:52 am

    27. Hawaii gains more than last weeks 1155 voting points and stays at #7 or even has a chance to leap over Texas.

  33. Pearl City Fan September 22, 2013 9:59 am

Quick question, maybe a dumb one… Do teams participating in any vball tournament have any financial incentive directly from the tournament? Or is this more for experience and RPI ratings?

I’m betting a lot of the old geezers in the stands at the SSC won’t approve Longo’s neon jersey.

I’m an old geezer and I approve.

  48. abacaxi September 22, 2013 1:53 pm

I`m kinda an old geezer and I LIKE IT! I LIKE IT A LOT! Cool to see some new eye catchy colors. Why did they decide to suddenly wear that color away and not at home games??

  51. Neil September 22, 2013 4:04 pm

Went to this game with family nice treat to see uh play

  52. Noble September 22, 2013 8:06 pm

WSU coach commented in his post-game interview after the Hawaii match and in his pre-game interview before the Creighton match that the Hawaii libero was “off the charts”. He may have been referring to her jersey? WSU hitters seemed subconsciously focused on her and hitting in her direction most of the match. Longo finished the 3 set sweep with 20 digs.

  53. Maverick September 23, 2013 8:42 am

    This week’s top 10:

  55. Cindy Luis September 23, 2013 9:35 am

Thanks. see new thread. was off to a slow start this morning

  56. Cindy Luis September 23, 2013 9:49 am

    45. It could be an issue of credits transferring, which means a ‘failure to show academic progress’ as they call it. she has transferred twice nice. Don’t know if she was in school last spring so …
It was like Heather Bown’s transfer from UCSB. UH, which is really weird about accepting credits even from schools like Stanford and UCSB, didn’t allow all of Bown’s credits to transfer. She had to go to both summer school sessions, taking several classes, in order to be eligible that first year as a junior.

  57. Warriorfan September 23, 2013 9:56 am

    53. Doesn’t really look green to me though, looks more yellowish. But I like it, hope she wears it at home.

  58. Cindy Luis September 23, 2013 9:58 am

    46. I would think that the old geezers, myself included, would approve. takes us back to our youth and the psychedelic colors of the 60s. that is, if we can remember those times ‘-)
Although it did look more like the yellow that was on the Shockers’ court.
but if it’s green that was posted, looked like the ‘limeys’ that UH men’s basketball occasionally breaks out.

  59. Cindy Luis September 23, 2013 10:09 am

    28. you can hear the entire press conference at go shockers.com
I used some of the comments he made. His did seem surprised that Manu-Olevao and Taylor had picked up their games, that they had been more error-prone during the matches there and from what he saw on tape. That’s part of the reason they felt they could load up on Hartong because he didn’t think the other pin hitters would hurt them. Obviously he was wrong. He had some other comments. Didn’t have room for more.

  60. Cindy Luis September 23, 2013 10:21 am

    23. don’t get the ‘see I told you about the 12.’ They usually took 12 for WAC matches because of the costs. Dave said he only took 12 for the Big West last year. I said, actually you took 13 or 14 on some trips. He said, oh, that’s right. we were in California.
Just wanted to clear things up about how many he could take to a non-NCAA tournament (since the NCAA foots the bill for that travel for postseason). Guess the point is that he didn’t think he needed to bring more than 13, for whatever reason. If you know Shoji, he still believes in being budget conscious on the travel.

  61. mauna September 23, 2013 10:28 am

Lime green jerseys on the two pin hitters Olevao and Taylor, perfect- under construction workers on the court.

  62. Cindy Luis September 23, 2013 10:55 am

    33. not a dumb questions. UH got money to travel. Don’t know if it directly came out of the tournament or if it was a guaranteed amount set ahead of time (I’m guessing the latter).
If I remember correctly UH got $10,000 for that one match they went to Nebraska a number of years ago.

  63. Cindy Luis September 23, 2013 11:02 am

    53. Don’t think her jersey had anything to do with their hitters hitting in her direction. Longo was getting to the balls and making outstanding plays. their coach had a lot of nice things to say about her, including ‘Heculeon effort.”

  64. Noble September 23, 2013 11:31 am

    64. Yes, just having a little fun. Her performance definitely stood out. Although come to think of it maybe her jersey didn’t stand out. The color of her jersey closely matched that of the large center court floor “Shocker” emblem. Maybe to the WSU hitters she was camouflaged and looked like part of the floor! Either way, she has my admiration for using every tool at her disposal to such great effect. Clearly she’s a terrific competitor.

  65. LC September 23, 2013 11:53 am

There is a new rule on Libero jerseys this year. The revised rule will require the libero to wear a uniform top that is immediately recognized from all angles as being in clear contrast to and distinct from the other members of the team. The libero and/or his/her teammates shall wear a solid-colored uniform top. The solid-colored uniform top shall clearly contrast from the predominant primary color(s) of the teammatesโ€™ uniform top, with the predominant color(s) being the color(s) appearing on approximately half of the uniform.

Longo’s jersey may look like it is yellow in the WSU photo but it was definitely lime green.

  66. hollycow September 23, 2013 1:45 pm

    44. Pudundo. They had a new long sleeve all black with green angled stripe last season. Haven’t worn it yet this season. It was brand new last year so we should see it this year. I’m more excited to see if the team wears the lime green, then Longo will wear the black long sleeve.

  67. Hot September 23, 2013 2:51 pm

    61. I think you misunderstand. In a previous thread, somebody asked who would travel or how many Shoji would take. I said he took 12 during the WAC matches, and enumerated the 12 players he might take. Also mentioned he took at least 13 to the 2005 AVCA Showcase and as many as 15 in the NCAA. You were quick to correct me that he took 14 and only went with 13 last year because Croson was suspended. That’s why I now say I wasn’t imagining things when I remember he took 12. I understand you go through a lot of questions and posts, but please understand I wasn’t being combative or being all I told you so. I appreciate all the answers you provide.
