1-2 stay the same with Loyola and Lewis. SC drops from 3 to 7.
Everyone else moves up a spot: UCI, BYU, Pepperdine and Hawaii.

As mentioned on previous thread, Kanetake would have gotten my vote
Anyway, from UH via the MPSF:

Junior libero Kolby Kanetake was named MPSF/Molten Player of the Week for Feb. 23-Mar. 1. It is the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team’s fourth weekly conference award in eight weeks, and the first of Kanetake’s career.

The Moanalua High product had 35 digs, averaging a remarkable 4.38 digs per set. He was also 47-for-48 serve-receiving through in the series.

Kanetake picked up a 2015 MPSF-high and career-high 21 digs in four sets on Feb. 20, landing himself fourth in the program’s all-time rally-scoring era digs list in one of the best performances by a UH libero since 2012 (Nick Castello, 22 digs, 5 sets).

Kanetake had 10 digs in Set 4 to help the ‘Bows rally back from a 3-point deficit. On Feb. 22, he tallied 14 digs with zero reception errors against the Matadors for his ninth double-digit dig match this year and also added three assists. Kanetake ranks sixth in the nation with 2.88 digs per set after accumulating 150 in 52 sets.

Cindy I agree w/ you w/ Kanetake getting the recognition… he certainly had some spectacular digs! what an unsung hero!

Agree that Kanetake deserves player of the week based on our match. Was not overly impressed with Signin’s kid but UCLA has improved a great deal since the start of the season. USC looked lost without the Hawaiian setter. Hawaii showed its depth this weekend. I was happy to see Wade take some risks.

Interesting how UCI coach has us pretty consistently at #3 and his team at around #7. Think UCI is way better than 7. Some other coaches also has us #4. I guess we will find out where we really stand once we play BYU @ BYU and Pepperdine. Hope we get at least a split on both.

Pepperdine, has only beaten UCSB, Long Beach and UCLA,( all once). They have lost to all the top 7 teams they have played so far. I honestly think UH can beat them twice.

  5. warriorfan February 23, 2015 12:25 pm

I also think UH should be ranked ahead of Pepperdine.

Was doing some interviews with Wahine basketball and ran into Wade, Jones and Zarkovic at various times.
From Wade in answer to some of the comments posted on the previous thread.
To Rayson: As I wrote earlier, and Wade confirmed, the reason that Wellenreiter wasn’t allowed to play was that he was wearing the wrong uniform number. The roster had him at No. 17, uniform was 15. Apparently they have four sets of uniforms and three of those have a No. 17. For some reason, when the new set with the kapa print was ordered, they didn’t order a No. 17. Wellenreiter wore 15. Wade said he realized the mistake when Wellenreiter went into the sub box. he told the manager to go get the No. 17 jersey but manager came back and said there was no No. 17.
So from now on the official roster will have his Nos. as 15/17 and it won’t be a problem any longer.

To Smithy, who wrote he/she heard something different than the account I passed along about the setter change. Wade said today the pins were struggling as was the setter. It is easier to change one guy than two so he swapped the setters. And then ended up subbing for Hartley and Fey.

Also got a chance to chat with Jones and Zarkovic. If you watch TV tonight, Wade explains how Jones came to be on the roster, including his unfiltered: CSUN cut him, tossed him on the trash pile. Jones said that Stork runs the team like a business and that the business decision was to go a younger route. Jones said he thought he still had one good year in the MPSF. He is a grad student in kinesiology, hoping to be a PE teacher/coach or athletic training. He said he was very pumped up to play against his former team and some of this best friends, including one who is his beach partner. Had a lot of good things to say about his current teammates and how talented the entire roster is.

As for Zarkovic, his left ankle still swollen. He said playing last night it didn’t hurt that much but he was sore this morning. Said he didn’t expect to play, even though he joked with Wade that he’d be ready to go in if needed.
We joked about him looking like Clark Kent on the bench with his glasses and then taking off his sweats to be like Superman. Very nice young man.

    8. Thanks for the clarification on Wellenreiter too bad he didn’t get a chance for some pay back like Jones got.

    Congrats to Kanetake.

Awesome that a libero, esp our libero got the honors, don’t recall a libero getting this nod in a long time, but just re-started following the men’s game more this year.
