Hawaii drops to No. 15 in RPI

http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/weeklyrpi/2013WVBrpi1.html

Two five-set losses led to Hawaii dropping six place in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index and five places in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll released today.

The Rainbow Wahine (16-4, 5-3 Big West) lost to both Cal State Northridge and UC Davis on the road last week, losing consecutive conference matches for the first time since 1993. It is also the first time since 1994 that Hawaii has lost three matches in conference play.

The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is a computer-generated power ranking that measures wins, losses, strength of schedule and opponents’ strength of schedule, It is used by the NCAA selection committee for seedings and brackets of postseason tournament.

Hawaii was at No. 3  in the first RPI of the season two weeks ago and No. 10 last week following the five-set loss to UC Santa Barbara.

The Wahine have lost three of their last four matches.

In today’s RPI, Texas was No. 1 followed by Penn State, Florida, Washington and Stanford. Rounding out the Top 10 are Missouri, Creighton, USC, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

The top six teams in the AVCA poll remained the same, led by Texas (15-2), which received 43 of the 60 first-place votes. Penn State (18-2, 11 votes) was second followed by Washington (17-1, 6 votes), USC (18-3), Florida (20-2) and Stanford (15-4).

Missouri (25-0) jumped four spots to No. 7 while San Diego (17-3) moved up a spot to No. 8. Rounding out the Top 10 were Colorado State (19-0) and Minnesota (19-4).

I know its not your beat, but I hope that someone does an interview with coach regarding the team. With tough question to go beyond the canned Q&A. Of course if there are personal issues, I’m guessing privacy is priority. However, if this sport wants to be treated as a revenue producing sport (which in UH’s case it is), transparency is the hot word at the moment.
While it can be risky for a reporter to be difficult with such a respected coach, for the sake of journalism, if the losing continues, then addressing it is important otherwise people in the ether will make their own reality, which as everyone knows, is usually more ridiculous than the truth. As inside knowledge has been shown in past situations, Big Tells in time reveals the truth long after a denial was made. Ie. in the past a couple of girls left the team without any mention to the public and rumors began in silent among the local volleyball community.
in the end, the rumors had some truth to it and yet nothing was ever revealed publicly.

  6. grace October 28, 2013 12:23 pm

    2. Oh yes that is a given. The 3rd conference loss sealed that deal. It will come down to the end of the Big West Conference and how we finish. We may have to continue to get back to winning just to assure an at large especially if we cannot rebound to dethrone UCSB and Northridge. I would love to see our team turn it around pray to get into a soft region, and turn this once fairytale season around. I still have HOPE that our team and coaches can fix whatever is wrong, we all may be smiling come December. Where’s the Faith??

  7. mario October 28, 2013 12:26 pm

Maybe age is catching up on our coach. When Andy gave the reign to Mike Sealy, UCLA won another title right away. Just my opinion, no expert in volleyball here and nothing against our coach.

  8. LC October 28, 2013 12:35 pm

#5 you won’t find anyone at this newspaper that would do that kind of interview. Protecting the Icon head coach and the program is obvious and the SA doesn’t do investigation type reporting.

  9. Cindy Luis October 28, 2013 1:09 pm

    7. Banachowski did not give the reins to Sealy. the job was going to McCutcheon, who then decided to go to Minnesota. then UCLA hired Sealy.
Sealy won a national title with a number of Banachowski’s players and a very favorable bracket.

  10. Cindy Luis October 28, 2013 1:12 pm

    8. no one is protecting Shoji or the program. From what? They had a bad week. lost 2 in 5 on the road.

  11. Volleyball fan October 28, 2013 1:14 pm

Question for #5 Nana Kokolele: So you heard any rumors of this reason for this latest downfall? What happened to Kalei Adolpho? That’s the root of the problem.

  12. OrbitalRipZ October 28, 2013 1:29 pm

~~ From the WHO CARES! Department ~~
At the Start of the Second Half of the Conference Season

I’ve used the cutoff number of RPI 32 for “near certain” (i.e. 95% certain) at-large bids to D1 Women’s Volleyball NCAA Championship’s 64-team field. [Obviously, this list does not take into account “bubble” teams — and when the wheeling and dealing is done, the majority of the remaining at-large bids will go to BCS schools, as everyone knows.]

FYI: The NCAA Volleyball [Selection] Committee has in front of them the guideline that at-large bids should be awarded to teams with a minimum winning record of “above .500.” Illinois, with a current won-loss record of 9-11, improved to RPI 22 this week. Furthermore, it is one of the 4 predetermined regional host schools, and correct me if I am wrong but I do not think a regional host school has ever been denied an at-large bid during the predetermined regional host era. It gets curiouser and curiouser.

Here’s the breakdown of the Top 32:

    Big Ten :
Last Week: 7 of its 12 conference teams are in the Top 32
    This Week: 8 of 12

    Pac-12 :
    Last Week: 7 of 12
    This Week: 6 of 12

    Southeastern/SEC:
    Last Week: 6 of 13
    This Week: 6 of 13

    Big 12:
    Last Week: 3 of 12
    This Week: 4 of 12

    Atlantic Coast/ACC:
    Last Week: 3 of 15
    This Week: 2 of 15

    West Coast/WCC:
    Last Week: 2 of 10
    This Week 2 of 10

    Big East:
    Last Week: 2 of 9
    This Week: 2 of 9

    Big West:
    Last Week: 1 of 9
    This Week: 1 of 9

    Mountain West:
    Last Week: 1 of 11
    This Week: 1 of 11

As for subregional hosts, IMHO teams with a RPI 1 ~ 10 are in. Everyone else — and that now includes Hawai’i — need to plead their case to the all-ears NCAA Volleyball [Selection] Committee. Except all pleas will fall on deaf ears if you’re not in the RPI Top 10. Now if only there was a WikiLeaker on that Committee!

Go Bows! Mo/Peaking are the only ways to silence your critics.

  13. HAPAGUY October 28, 2013 1:29 pm

    11. Kalei is not the root of our problem. Our passing and serve receive is the root of our problem. Can’t run the offense effectively if your setter is running all over chasing down shanked passes or errant serve receives…..

  14. tako October 28, 2013 1:37 pm

It ain’t over till its over and that only happens after the LAST game is played. As has always been the case, the ball is in your court and you all need to make the plays. Go Rainbow Wahine – I am rooting for you to roof all comers….

    14. agree there is still a lot of VB left to play.
UH still could win the Big West
CSUN 7-1 hosts CSF, UCR, at UCI, at The Beach, Cal Poly, UCSB,
UCSB 7-1 at Cal Poly, Hawaii, at Davis, at CSUN, Fullertton, UCR, at The Beach, at UCI
UH 5-3 UCI, The Beach, at Cal Poly, at UCSB, Davis, CSUN, at UCR, at Fullertinon
LBS 5-3 at Hawaii, at Davis, CSUN, at UCR, at Fullerton, at UCI, UCSB, Call Poly

  18. Cindy Luis October 28, 2013 2:25 pm

    16. again what questions do you want asked that haven’t already been asked and answered and, to some extent, been dismissed by some here as ‘standard answers.’

Last year, UH won the five-set matches. This year they haven’t.
Wahine went 5-2 in five-setters last season, losing to Cal and UW.
they went 18-0 in the Big West when they just as easily could have gone 13-5. 5-0 Big West when going five.
This year they haven’t won the five-setters, and are 1-4, 0-3 in the Big West when it goes five.

  19. kimo browner October 28, 2013 2:48 pm

    @ 10. C’mon!

  20. HAPAGUY October 28, 2013 3:04 pm

    18. Well not to try to argue with you but a good question to ask Dave would be why he chose to change the starting rotation for the 5th set. I mentioned this on your blog before (and on Volleytalk) and got no response. In sets 3&4 he started with Nikki Taylor (Mendoza)serving 1st and UH was first to 15 in both those sets. In set 5 he started with Mita serving 1st which meant that Emily didn’t get to the front row until it was 11-6 UCD. You yourself said “Don’t know what was the coaches saw to flop the lineup as they did. best serving rotation in Set 4 was Mendoza then Longo. They started Set 4 with Manu-Olevao serving, Taylor right-front. Vorster MB, Hartong left-front, Uiato left-back.”…

  21. Cubicle1126 October 28, 2013 3:10 pm

it was kind of an embarrassing weekend for UH sports all around this past weekend … the wahine losing 2 matches, the football team continuing their streak, and then kolten wong getting picked off at 1st base (at 1st base!?!?!?!) to end the game …

of the 3, i really don’t know who had the roughest weekend… (maybe us fans?)

  22. Cindy Luis October 28, 2013 3:10 pm

don’t think you’re arguing. just asking about questions.
agree the starting rotation for Set 5 vs. Davis is one, which is why I brought it up.

  23. sharene October 28, 2013 3:15 pm

Wow…everyone is such fair weather fans…these are college kids…Tai and Taylor are newbies playing on the road…Tai had to give up her redshirt for Jane Croson….let’s be supportive. Dave is a great coach…so is Scott and Robyn….we ask for change and then criticize it…let’s get behind the team instead of making them feel like they are failures and worse.

  24. Maverick October 28, 2013 3:21 pm

    18. I’d like to know if there is an issue with Adolpho that is affecting her play. Her kill attempts have been hitting the top of the netting with some degree of regularity since the UCSB match. Maybe some of this is related to the sets she is getting. But at times, she doesn’t seem to be elevating like she did at the beginning of the season. Her performance against Davis reminded me of her performance against UCSB.

  25. HAPAGUY October 28, 2013 4:15 pm

    24. She’s dropping her elbow. She elevates fine….

  26. menehune October 28, 2013 4:51 pm

It ain’t over till it’s over. The Wahine lost two tough matches on the road, but they’ll rebound and win against those two teams at home. As for UCSB at their gym, I predict the Wahine will beat them and silence all the above critics. Sometimes adversity brings a team together and this will happen. We still believe in our Wahine. LETS GO BOWS.

  27. kiipua October 28, 2013 5:44 pm

    26. You think that’s all? I agree with your take on serve/receive and the problems arising therefrom. But even before this trip, ever since UCSB, Kalei hasn’t “seemed” as effective on the block. So I wondered too, if she’s at full health. She hit OK at Davis & Northridge, yet only manage to get hands on 3 blocks at Davis, 2 v. Northridge, 1 v. Poly. So maybe you’re right (technique). If she can lift for kills, she can lift for blocks.

  28. Kazu October 28, 2013 6:17 pm

I had some negative thoughts about the team including the coaches after this last weekend, however now after two days i belive that they will regroup between now and Friday. I also belive that they will win the last 6 matches . I thought about how bad and angry the fans felt, but i also thought about what the team was going through.Go Bows !

  29. HAPAGUY October 28, 2013 7:08 pm

    27. Hawaii is just not a good blocking team this year and last year actually also. The MB’s are out of position in relation to the opposing teams setter way to much. That’s why our middles seem to get there too late (big seam)……

  30. TW October 28, 2013 7:38 pm

Shoji decided to go with no true right side and have the outside hitters hit twice on the left and once on the right. He admittedly decided not to focus on blocking because he “liked the defense.” With no one on the right side consistently aligning the block, the middles are getting no direction. There is almost no right side help on middle attacks; hawaii blockers are not aligning with the attack of opposing hitters. they do get random blocks but have been consistently outblocked by marginal teams. Maybe Shoji needs to accept that it is impossible to play good defense behind a poorly formed block. You don’t get a point for digging but you do get a point for blocking.

  31. HawaiiMongoose October 28, 2013 7:42 pm

The Big West isn’t the WAC. These opponents aren’t pushovers. They have talent and are well-coached and if UH isn’t playing its “A” game, especially on the road, the Wahine will not prevail. Nonetheless I have faith in Dave and company to right the ship. And if they can overcome this adversity, it will make them mentally tougher in the tournament.

  32. View from afar October 28, 2013 8:14 pm

#28 Kazu, are the fans angry? What are they angry about? Are they angry because Na Wahine lost a couple of matches? Are they angry because they are no longer entertained by the expected routine dominance of their conference opponents and their subsequent expected spot in the NCAA postseason tournament? Yes, fans have very high expectations of Na Wahine and we are all very proud of their accomplishments. Let us not forget that there is an incredible amount of very hard work that goes into those achievements. Plus being in a very high profile program heaps a great deal of stress on the student-athletes. Whatever we are feeling is nothing at all close to what the team and coaches are feeling. We see the problems or at least the obvious symptoms of the problems. But the team and coaches know what is going on and should have the experience and leadership to know what the remedies are and how to implement them.

Anyone who has been around competitive sports knows it takes guts to step out on the public stage and perform especially at this very high level. Yes, the participants have chosen to be in that position, yet they represent us; our hopes and dreams as well. The very least we can do is show our appreciation for their efforts by coming out to support them. I’m told that the SSC is a really great place with a full house. I hope the place is rocking for the rest of the season. Whatever ails them, the fans can be part of the cure. Na Wahine need us. Go Wahine!

  33. wop ur jaws October 28, 2013 8:48 pm

Nebraska admitted it weaknesses and the coach pulled two his early starters and left it that way. No favorites. Crazy is doing the same thing over and over hoping for the same results. I say let the bench play and give them the support like the starters and coach them and see how they perform. Not just one rotation but the entire match.

  34. Hot October 28, 2013 8:49 pm

Yikes. This UH team is making history in a bad way. Is it an option to start Goodman on the right and some combination of Taylor and Kastl on the left? Passing from the two outsides have been bad and I think it’s a major reason for the losses and the limited middle attack.

  35. grace October 28, 2013 10:59 pm

Just very evident to see how passive aggressive Hawaii fans are.
Hawaii has fair weathered fans…If we expect to show our girls or guys how much they mean, we not only should show up at games when we play teams like Texas or UCLA or when the football team was under June Jones Sugar Bowl season. We need to get off our Bento Lunches okoles and start being passionate fans especially during trying times. They need US!! The Hawaii fans do expect our Wahine to win every game. We are not used to losing. I just feel the team can savage their season on a high note and by making necessary changes in the line-up. This team was called a very deep team. Well, I think we need to explore that depth. Certain pieces in that puzzle isn’t working. Not to down any player but change is good. That could emotionally charge up the non starters to step in and send a message to the starters that you have to deliver always because there is somebody that wants that spot. That’s the sense I had during fall camp. It does not take a rocket scientist to see that. Lastly, our players athletically and emotionally is a reflection of our coach (es). Like John Fink will always say, “THINK ABOUT

  36. hollycow October 28, 2013 11:25 pm

Changes? From past history for Shoji to sit down a player, who has been relegated as a starter for the last 10+ matches will not happen. Shoji has his favorites and is not going to bench her. You’ll see the same starting lineup on Friday.

  37. Vlimafan October 28, 2013 11:48 pm

    #33 Hot:

Is it possible to have a combo of Taylor and Kastl playing LS-2 with Goodman starting at opp? Would they run out of substitutions? It’s an honest question. When Goodman plays Shoji subs her out whenever she rotates to the backrow and Mendoza comes in for Taylor in the backrow. And if Shoji combines Taylor and Kastl in the front row a few times in a set… would there be enough substitutions for all that? Again, it’s an honest question. I don’t even know how many subs there are this year.

I do like that idea of having Taylor at LS, which is her true position, with Kastl coming in to pass for her in the backrow while Olevao starts at opp, since she does play all 6 rotation. I wouldn’t mind seeing that happen this week against UC Irvine. If it works well then perhaps Shoji should repeat it against Long Beach and see how it goes. If it doesn’t go well then adjustments obviously will need to be made.

Whatever Shoji plans to do with his front row players, I just hope he will have Kastl playing in the backrow for the majority of the time. Imo she’s one of the better passers on this team, ahead of Taylor, Olevao, Kawamura, Lelepali and Long. UH’s passing needs Kastl’s help… a lot.

Whatever Shoji and staff decides to do with their players, I’ll be cheering them on louder and more obnoxious than usual. Lol. Love my Na Wahine. Go Bows!

  38. Vlimafan October 29, 2013 12:02 am

I forgot add in my previous post (#36) regarding Olevao:

as I mentioned, I wouldn’t mind seeing Taylor play LS-2 position with Kastl coming in for her in the backrow while Olevao starts at opp since she plays all 6 rotations BUT having Mendoza come in for Olevao if/when Olevao’s passing completely breaks down and if they have enough substitutions left.

    Just a thought…

  39. Ron October 29, 2013 6:59 am

31 VFA- I could not agree with you more. Your fair and thoughtful comments say it all. Thanks for putting into words what I was thinking.

  40. LC October 29, 2013 8:25 am

    From that other blog.

New rules on hosting.Increased from top 16 to top 33. Only requirements besides submitting a bid . Addition of Pablo is interesting

    1) Teams that are in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll as of October 28, 2013.

    Or

    2) Teams that are in the Top 25 of the Pablo Rankings as of October 28, 2013.

    Or

    3) Teams that are in the top 25 of the RPI Rankings as of October 28, 2013.

  41. LC October 29, 2013 8:47 am

So that press release by AVCA should put to a end any more discussion about Hawai`i not hosting unless they fall off of the end of the earth by the end of the year. 25 is the new magical number for hosting.

  42. kimo browner October 29, 2013 9:15 am

attendance for UH sports rides on “fair weather” fans. take heed.

  43. hossana October 29, 2013 9:16 am

The wahine will not give up nor will I give up on this team despite all the criticism concerning the coach or certain team members. There is still a lot of volleyball matches left plus the conference playoffs and the regionals and I do believe the Wahines will come back and make a run of it…just be patient and let the games begin…….GO WAHINES!!!!!

  44. mei mei October 29, 2013 9:19 am

soo looking forward to getting rid of idiot comments …

always believed if something is broke, fix it. clearly with the recent losses of over teams that should have been a win didn’t work with the line up the coach is putting in.

31 I don’t think the fans are upset at the team, they just want change.

  45. Hightop October 29, 2013 9:22 am

Why would that AVCA press release put an end to anymore discussion about Hawaii not hosting? The NCAA committee doesn’t listen to AVCA and has it’s own criteria. I don’t see any NCAA rule changes regarding changing the magical number to 15 for hosting.

Hawaii has dug themselves a deep hole and most likely will not be hosting. I will be rooting for them wherever they end up.

  46. Hightop October 29, 2013 9:24 am

Oops, meant to type 25 not 15 in post #45.

  47. LC October 29, 2013 9:34 am

Obviously this was a new agreement between AVCA and the NCAA who had previously agreed to let the top 16 have the first crack at hosting. Top 33 now get a crack at hosting up from top 16.It’s not my fault that some don’t get it.

  48. hollycow October 29, 2013 9:34 am

    41. LC. This change IMO gives UH less chance of hosting 1/2. They could end up top 3 in the RPI and not given a 1/2 round. The only way that UH will host a 1/2 round is to be selected as one of the 4 regional sites, which probably won’t happen in the next 20 years. This change only gives the NCAA 17 more choices for sites.

  49. Hightop October 29, 2013 9:42 am

LC, there is absolutely nothing to indicate a new agreement between AVCA and the NCAA. The release is simply listing all and any schools that have a shot at hosting. Nothing more.

You are reading way too much into it.

  50. Hightop October 29, 2013 9:44 am

Nothing changes regarding the NCAA criteria without a new NCAA by-law being adopted formally. The current a NCAA criteria specifically states 16 seeded teams.

  51. Hightop October 29, 2013 9:49 am

Nice response. I guess you don’t like being called out for having a reading comprehension problem and giving out totally false info.

    Tsk tsk.

  52. Hightop October 29, 2013 9:53 am

Here is the link for the release so intelligent people can see for themselves that it is just a vast list of potential host sites as of right now (and nothing more):

    http://t.co/Qq4mbRhhTp

  53. LC October 29, 2013 10:06 am

I guess Ferd is also wrong .

    Ferd Lewis ‏@FerdLewis 3h

Despite recent losses, Rainbow Wahine are on the 33-school NCAA D-I Tournament 1st & 2nd round host watch list announced today. #HawaiiWVB
    Details

Even a 12 year old gets it . 33 schools now get a crack at hosting as long as the meet one of the three criteria mention in the article. DUH !!!!

  54. Hightop October 29, 2013 10:17 am

Wow, not only are ignorant, you’re obstinate about it. Lol!

Like I said, intelligent people with basic reading comprehension skills can read the release (in the link I posted) and understand it. It’s not saying anything close to what you think it does.

  55. Hightop October 29, 2013 10:19 am

BTW, Ferd is saying exactly what I said. It’s just a vast “watch” list of potential host sites. Nothing more.

  56. You Gotta B Kiddin' Me October 29, 2013 10:22 am

Someone earlier mentioned that the Poll(s) would be used in the selection processes this season; some also, as I recollect, continued in pretending the knowing of too much vb.

    As of Oct. 28, 2013:

    vs. #1
    vs. #8
    vs. #24
    vs. #31

..by way of CSUN (who also shared in the common opponent of #31)
    vs. #3

  57. Hightop October 29, 2013 10:24 am

Ahh, did I strike a nerve? It’s okay. I understand you are extremely touchy about being wrong.

  58. LC October 29, 2013 10:24 am

I guess that new news that Pablo is now part of the criteria is also wrong. some many dumb clucks in this world.

  59. LC October 29, 2013 10:28 am

Oh wow I guess that e-mail reply from AVCA is even wrong.

  60. Hightop October 29, 2013 10:33 am

Care to elaborate or are you just spitting into the wind again? My guess is you won’t share the contents because it won’t support your position — just like the quote from Ferd did not support you position.

Seriously, quote anything anywhere about an agreement between AVCA and the NCAA or any new rule changes to the NCAA selection committee guidelines. My guess is you will just spout off insults instead because you know you are wrong.

  61. LC October 29, 2013 10:40 am

Now that we know that Hawai`i will only have to finish in the Top 25 of either the AVCA Poll or the RPI or Pablo to host that should take a lot of pressure off of the kids.

  62. Hightop October 29, 2013 10:42 am

See the link folks. LC’s info is totally wrong so don’t buy into it.

    See for yourself.

I find it refreshing that the NCAA and AVCA are finally starting to work together with this new change now if they can only get this cooperation extended to seeding.

is there a link to the AVCA press release about the new/revised hosting criteria?

that AVCA press release is interesting. if the ncaa and avca are now collaborating on hosting issues, that will be good thing, for coaches to be able to lobby or get their input in there.

but expanding the list of potential hosts can cut both ways for hawaii. the rule about “seeded teams automatically hosting” guaranteed that hawaii will host if it’s rpi and results earned them a seed.

but now even if hawaii is seeded, the expanded list of “possible” hosts could mean that hawaii is seeded but still get send on the road, which is what was happening prior to 2011 anyway. in part, i think this expansion takes things back to the status quo from a couple years ago.

but the flip side i guess is that hawaii can’t be denied a seed (if they’ve earned it), even if they don’t end up hosting.

this is one of those “is the glass half full … or half empty?” kind of situations … imo.

    Always “half-full” mind you.
    He’s good–ALWAYS!

UH’s situational ‘delima’ IF that’s what you’d care to deem it,

    ..UCLA *a la* 2009.

Da stumbling Bruins peak in/out as the #9 seed in the NCAAs to only end up in Austin, with a MIGHTY #2 Texas, halted in the 2nd Rnd (if you will).
