YES! IMUA!!
Cindy, Love your comments about VB being in the Pac 12, getting a piece of that $$$, and eventually (not immediately) attracting talent to build a VB dynasty given our reputation and success as a Mid-Major… Makes so much sense.
Yay ! it’s on ESPN3 – will be able to catch the replay, provided they don’t mess it up, like Long beach’s match… go BOWS!
Go Wahine, get that undisputed, outright BWC regular season championship.!!!
Your mainland Ohana is all here ready to give you the support to bring home the Big West title tonight. GEEV UM!
No more alluding to maybe or might- wahines are the studs of the BW. Let’s take the court and make the plays – one at a time. Go Bows! We will be at the match cheering you on.
Play smart and play hard! GO BOWS!
34. previous thread, Cindy my post says even if UH loses these last 3 matches, yes they are only co-champs, however being tied with Beach and Poly, UH wins the auto bid following the BW rule book on breaking ties.
I was just making the point that UH has the auto qualifier in hand and not being the outright champ.
Wishing the team all the best tonight and hoping our poster(s) at the match will be back to comment on the turnout and atmosphere. Go Bows!!!
Mahalo, frings #5!
8-9, they don’t have the tiebreaker on Cal Poly so they don’t have the automatic berth yet. still have to play that second match with the Mustangs.
Beach and Cal Poly split their series, Beach won in five, SLO in four. So the Mustangs have the tiebreaker on 49ers.
If Hawaii was in the PAC12, I think we would be the Penn St of the volleyball world right now. With Hawaii being Hawaii, the fan support, the success we have without the $$, the recruits we already get, Dave being the best coach in developing players. My goodness…if we had the money the top conferences get, I think Hawaii would absolutely be the cream of the crop of the volleyball world!!
OMG, wish OMG were just a sophomore LOL. 😉
No changes in the lineup for Hawaii.
Oh no….it’s the double braid!!!! haha
16. don’t know what is the more inane discussion, braids or lanky.
UH with 4 early aces, up 8-6
Irvine up 15-12 at the TTO 15-12
Tai should not be passing.
OMG Cindy..it was just a tongue in cheek comment.
UCI up 19-17. TO UH
Man…there are times Bubica looks unstoppable. Looking back at the previous match as well. She always seems to get key kills and really cranks it.
OMG, it was just an innocent response.
Kill by Magill gives UH a 21-20 lead. TO UCI
Magill with a solo puts hawaii up 22-20. TO UCI
23. I guess saying someone’s comment is possibly lacking of interest could be up for debate on innocence or not. Good to know though.
sorry, thought you said mundane. You actually said inane…that’s probably less innocent..haha.
Nikki with 7 kills…outplaying the double braid theory. 🙂
UH had two set point chances. couldn’t convert. UCI ties it at 24-24. TO UH.
Koelsch in on the block. UH wins its 26-24.
Kendra should be playing front row for Tayler all the time, IMO.
KK!! Making plays…love it!
Great sub at the right time…Go Kendra!
27. said I didn’t know which was more inane discussion: braids vs. lanky. pretty much a tossup. Was a general comment.
I think come tourney time with bigger blocks and big time hitters, Kendra may not sit as long…You may have to Keep Kendra front all the time IMO
Wahine with their sixth block. UH up 6-2. TO UCI
Agree a great sub.
I wish Hawaii would do a flag for conference championships or tournament appearances. I know it’s a $$ factor, but would still be cool to see around the Stanley like other schools have. I think it brings pride to the student athletes as well
UH’s passing struggling, looked like they’d run away with this. UCI ties it at 14. TO UH
The floor announcer is clearly mixing up Magill and Maglio….
Hawaii up 20-17. TO UCI
UH with its seventh block. wins 25-21. Wahine still perfect in Set 2, 25-0.
39, agree; that would also explain why one of them said Magill is a soph.
This ESPN team must not have watched the LBSU matches… Irvine definitely isn’t the only team to give Hawaii a little trouble.
Great substitution at the right time for setting/block of Koelsch. Nikki, Magill, and TMO had some beautiful kills.
Anyone know what channel espn3 is for direct tv
Nikki Taylor is making a huge statement. Two sets, 14 kills, hitting .385
43, Thanks Couldn’t get the ESPN stream to work. Going off radio and live stats.
Klos, it is only streaming. Via app if you are on mobile or at espn.go.com online … but you need to log in via your TV provider.
45. ESPN3 is online only. espn3.com.
Tech issues would be funny but they’re not … can’t get radio and the ESPN feed is varying between 1 and 4 bars.
UH up 7-2. TO UCI
radio working fine for me
nbcsportsradiohawaii.com
UH up 15-8. TO.
Thanks for the more direct radio link!
Castillo playing middle, gets a kill. UH up 23-12
54. sorry you didn’t notice the original post which gave the link. Granato ends it 25-14.
Overall, no slump after the 10 minute break!
wahine settles down sweep cindy luis blog
Good win. Two down, two to go. Big West champs again. Congrats ladies!
Yahoo!!!! BWC outright champs! Congratulations to Dave and the Wahine.
I’d tried the original link up top, but couldn’t drill down successfully without the “Hawaii” in the URL … maybe a phone thing?
brittany hovchevar (announcer) keeps saying they (UCI) should hit over Higgins… Good sub Dave!
Bows looked a lot sharper in the 3rd set; what a shot by Castillo! All the hitters have been pulling out their cannons! 2 more matches to go, I hope all the wahine feel like Nikki said in her interview; they want to get a clean sweep of the conference.
Play hard, play smart! GO BOWS and congratulations on winning the Big West! WHOOP! WHOOP!
Yes. BIG WEST CHAMPS OUTRIGHT!!
Sorry Cindy for the Caps.
I really thought we played a very “efficient” 3rd set. That was a Complete Team Effort!!! Love that style of play!
You just could tell they wanted it!
Nikki was on fire!!!!

I thought the announcers were almost too kind to Hawaii. Nikki was pretty unstoppable. Tai got off to a bad start passing wise but she can really knock the stuffings out of the ball and is fun to watch. Kendra was under used as usual. Two more to go! Go bows! I miss hearing Tiff calling the game but I love streaming.
Very happy for our 2 Super Frosh, Granato and Castillo…2 big kills in that last set…I like the way Castillo jumps up for every ball as a decoy. What a kill for her! I love the way the other girls are so happy for the both of them and celebrate! That is what may the difference later. The feeling of “Togetherness” can make a difference from a starter, role player, or deep bench…Yes!!!
Higgins is a good blocker for her size but Koelsch is obviously better.
Something UH did in Set 3 was flop the lineup. got a better matchup for Taylor. Instead of Higgins serving first they dialed it back 2 and had Taylor serving first.
Ron, Tiff was on the call on 1500-AM
Match on 1420-AM Thursday, 1500-AM Saturday.
espn1420am.com
nbcsportsradiohawaii.com.
Yep the announcers pretty much gave our scouting reports of both our strengths and weaknesses…lol
69. All the players jump as decoys, most noticeable are the middles. Greeley does too but she plays a lot off the net.
Good win for the Wahine BWC champs. Would like to congratulate Irvine players for a great match but keep getting blocked.
Didn’t get a chance to see or hear match, super glad we won the conference outright! I hope we can power through the next two matches and continue to be on the road for the next x-amount of days! Continue tuning up for the post season play! lets do this! Go bows!
74. You can watch the replay on espn3, watch ESPN app, etc.
It will bode well for the wahine if Nikki continues to play like this for the last part of the season, she was fantastic tonight.
Norene Iosia will be on tv saturday 6 pm hawaii time, fox sports west , as her Redondo Union team is in the CIF finals again.
Cindy, mauna’s right, even if UH lost the last three matches, they have the tie breaker over Poly. UH won in 3 sets over Poly and won both matches against Beach. Just setting the situation correctly, but it’s now all moot.
Happy B-day OMG thursday
Kudos to the players who have improved their blocking skills this year. Appreciate the athleticism it takes, especially for these taller players, who do what it takes every match. Look much improved on their reads. Maglio, imho, a future all american. Kendra, thank you for what you do for the team in your role. You could start for most any other team in the nation. Entire team has to keep looking to improve every week. “If it’s not broken, why fix it” mindset, imo, never applies to anyone who always looks to try to get better at what they do.
harlee kehauoha of irvine is really good.
Imho, as to volleyball, the NCAA rewards those teams that earn their wins.
81. IMHO you’re taking what Manu-Olevao said out of context and without the entire quote. . She was asked what changes for the team when going on the road. She said . Why fix what’s not broken. We need to keep doing what we’re doing and make adjustments along the way.
There is nothing in that to indicate that the ‘someone’ doesn’t look to get better at what they do.
Lets see, Norene will be playing volleyball on TV at the same time as our football team is playing San Jose State. What to watch, what to watch, I am so torn. Not really, I will watch both only because I already paid for the football game on pay-for-view. Thanks for the tip Warriorfan.
Cindy, you are right I did take it out of context, literally. As to being on the road, I actually think it is a good thing for the team to be out on the road for that extended period. Gets them ready for the tournament. Anyway, “If it ain’t broke why fix it”, is just a personal pet peeve. I always like to think you can attempt to do anything better. Even if something has “always been done that way”. So, my apologies to TMO or if I offended anyone, I assure you, it was nothing personal.
Just got back from match. Mary Shoji and Diane Sebastian Pestolesi were also there. Most fun was when the large Castillo family cheered wildly when Casey came into the match and when she got her kill. Nikki started great and got better. Kendra had a great block at end of set 1. Nikki and Tayler put great serving pressure on the Anteaters. Team played steady for first two sets but in the 3rd set, came out with different vibe and energy that put them into a different gear much like Long Beach Match. Shoji continues to be quite critical of any mistake after every play showing his immediate displeasure as he ramps-up the players mentally for tournament play.
The best coaches are great at teaching. As long as the player learns from their mistake, that’s what most important. Keep it positive and make sure they learn how and what they need to do to correct it. Yep, got to get them ready for tournament play. If they keep making the same mistakes over again, even when coached about it, then sometimes they need a little talkin’ to before it becomes a problem. They’ll be facing the best teams in the country. That in itself has got to be enough incentive to play their best every time they step out on the court. Now would be a good time. Hope this team goes far into the tournament. Just my view, nothing else.
Super congrats to the Wahine team and their coaches, although I felt like I was on a roller coaster for the first two sets. Glad to see that Shoji got everybody in the game, and yes, Castillo really bombed one close to the end of the match.
They’ll go deep in the tournament if they play like they did in the last set but I think Nikki should get less playing time as the last two game dictates to prepare for what will definitely be harder competition down the road.
Also, nice to see the team get lei’s after the game from their fans.
#87 tongo, really appreciate your blog. Reminded me how the families in California must be really stoked to have an opportunity to see their daughter/sister/etc play in the Wahine march to an undefeated MWC season. I feel good for the players. After all, Dave really knew what he was doing when he agreed to this schedule.
Does anyone knows if the the Hawai’i vs Cal-Poly game will be aired anywhere?
Great job to the staff and the women volleyball team…
Tongo and people who watched the game: since you were at the game, what is your evaluation of the service return problems of TMO? Are they continuing or did they improve after first set. She also hit only .050+, was it because of big blocks? Finally, was Irvine really taking advantage of Higgin’s lack of height in the blocking as other people have indicated or is that overblown.
91, yikes! I just checked the weekly Big West listings and the match doesn’t show as being telecast. Hoping Cal Poly will have feed somehow? http://www.bigwest.org/tv/
#91 Big West Conference site or UH Athletic Site will have link to match which will be streamed online by Big West TV, as they have all season. It will be Senior Night for the Mustangs so it should be great match.
Will start a new thread for Wednesday in a bit. But wanted to get a few comments out of the way.
Mauna and HC, apologize. you were right about UH having clinched the auto on Sunday. I was led to believe that IF there ended up being a tie with Hawaii that set differential would come into play with Cal Poly result.
Asked my son (1420/1500) broadcaster about the UH fans. He said there were a lot and very vocal.
87. Shoji has said his frustration is when players slip into old habits or keep making the same mistakes.
As for the S-R issues, particularly Manu-Olevao. she was aced twice last night, UCI’s only aces. She and Kakahaki were served 20 times but since I wasn’t there there didn’t see if it was Kahakai who took the serve instead of Manu-Olevao when both were in the back row and UCI was serving to that area. The two took a combined 20 serves out of the total 55. Not sure what my point is other than to throw out some stats and that Manu-Olevao received the other 18 serves fine.
Unless Hawaii drastically changes how its lineup is set, you’ll see Manu-Olevao in the back row. That is because when she is back there, the Wahine have only two front row attackers (technically unless Koelsch is there and is the threat that she is) That is also why you don’t see a DS subbed in for Manu-Olevao. They need a third attack option.
