Congrats to Hartong

Here is a link that shows the voting

Interesting that Taylor gets votes as an outside hitter but none for Region FOY. But congrats to Hartong, Taylor, Uiato, and Longo for all receiving votes!
agree. Under the new format, voting was done by position.
it also is weird that they split up conferences. Big West & Pac-12 for example. the FOY in the Pac-12 is the FOY in the Pacific South.
Big West FOY was 3rd in voting in the Pacific South
Didn’t understand Colorado State, who exited first round, got three 1st Team members and Hawaii with one.
And how is Colorado and BYU “South” and Hawaii “North” weird. Just a way to get more Pac-12 members on the teams.
To defend CSU, they had some big wins in the Pac-12.
Uiato had big games in the beginning of the season and her play in the middle of the season dropped a little.
Uiato should of made at least HM and look at longo, who got the same amount of votes as orlandi and orlandi makes the team and longo doesn’t get HM. It’s outrageous hawaii only got 1 this year
4. setaone. Agree, weird re-organization of teams. I think you meant CSU is in the MWC not Pac-12.
6. mauna, my bad. i misread and thought it was “Colorado”.
This new selection process has been out since last summer and you guys just now learning about ?
1. vballfreak808. Just a take on Taylor getting votes for outside hitter and not for FOY. Only the conferences FOY gets in the mix for Region FOY, like Spindt for the BW. Glad to see that the coaches recognize Taylor’s accomplishments and as a freshman at that. She will be a force.
9. It’s not that. I don’t think Dave submitted a video for freshman of the year for her. You don’t have to be conference freshman to get regional freshman because rolfZen got get region and was not confrerence.
Has the BW done away with their Good Sportsmanship Award? Last year it came out on Nov 28th.
10 Brandon, thanks I stand corrected. Carlini the Big winner and Rolfzen are in different Regions. Nikki would have been right there with Holt if they submitted her’s.
Nikki IMO would of won. Being the conference player of the year does help. Like say rolfZen was in the same region as Carlini, Carlini most likely would of won. But it’s not a given. In the pacific north west, I don’t think there were any conference foy in there, and even so, if it was one from a weaker conference and the player is weaker than Nikki, Nikki could still win. I firmly believe if Dave submitted a video, Nikki would of won. She was the best freshman in that group
10. Let not just put it on Dave, I’m sure the SID for volleyball is mostly in charge of doing it.
14. I apologize, I thought it was coaches who submitted it haha
Videos are not submitted for regional voting. Videos are submitted at the next stage, for AA consideration.
I thought videos were subbmitted for regional freshman though? Because how would someone who got less votes than Nikki get foy
Congrats to Emily. Well deserved.
I agree … uiato and longo were deserving.
So odd that Colorado St doesn’t get out of the first round and they got 3 on the team. So wrong.
Hartong no doubt was deserving! Here’s hoping for another first team AA honor …
And congrats to Taylor for the HM recognition!
Brandon the selection process is on the AVCA site. LC is right … the new regional alighnments and new rules for selection and voting have been out a while now. It’s all there on the site. 🙂
Wow haha, did not bother to check. My apologies.
Cubicle, I could not find anything how they chose regional freshman. Would you care to elaborate? If that’s ok
I’m just confused because Nikki got 5 votes for oh and holt got 1 but holt got more votes for foy and Nikki wasn’t even in the nomination
I have been thinking this for a while and I apologize if this resembles you but I cannot believe what fair weather fans some of us are. We were all on a high with the team, coach, playing etc. However, as soon as we have a few challenging games, everyone turns against everyone. These girls are college students, not professional players. Most are not even 21. All are full time students. Unfortunately, they fell towards the end. We should be here to pick them up not to put them down. This probably belongs on an earlier thread but figured no one would read it there.
The answers to questions that some of you have can be found in the link below. These are the instructions that come with the Awards Packet. It is long and requires a lot of reading. There is a certain of criteria that governs who can be nominated and who is eligible for what. Pages 20 & 21 takes you through the online nomination process.
http://www.avca.org/includes/media/docs/2013DIAwardsPacket-Final.pdf
After the nomination process outlined in the link I provided then comes the voting process and this is where the favoritism, back scratching and protecting your conference comes into play. You can’t tell people how to vote.
With all coaches now voting it might be more difficult for teams like Hawai`i to land All Americans.
No one from the Dink Queens team, getting some satisfaction from that.
3. the voting was done prior to the first round so it doesn’t matter how a team did.
4. CSU is not in the Pac-12. They are Mountain West.
10. The coaches are not in charge of submitting videos. It is done through media relations.
27 I agree with you in part. I do think one problem is Hawaii is in a region that is dominated by Pac-12 teams. And none that Hawaii played this year, so these voters in that region are not as familiar with the UH players as they are with the ones they play against.
I do think it would be fairer not to split conferences up
28. Didn’t deserve any, stats wise none of the dink queens were anything special.
Really disappointed Longo didn’t make all region. I think she was the best libero in this region.
According to a recent article I read the Queens of the Dink have reclaimed their spot as a Big West powerhouse and they still refuse to utter the words Tri-Champs.
33. I agree. She is the same, if not better than orlandi and orlandi got first team and longo did not even get honorable mention. It’s just messed up and confusing IMO
And 34 where the article? Is it on big west or ucsb site?
35. agree. don’t understand what the tiebreaker was if both had the same number of points.
37. that’s why I’m so confused Cindy! Some girls who got less votes made the team while others did not! I know only 1 libero makes the list with the possibility of more making it if they make one of the 3 people from any position category, but why diddnt longo get it and why diddnt she get at least HM. She’s one of hawaiis best Liberos imo
28. of their 4 players on the All-Big West first team, UCSB ‘s Sully the BWC leader in digs.
36. as i said, don’t know what the tiebreaker would have been.
Oh I know. I was just stating how I feel haha. I was surprised mita got so little votes, but I am glad Nikki got recognition
Congrats to Carly Kan! Southeast Regional first team and FOY
4. Utah and Colorado are in the South because when they split the Pac-12, the six north teams were UW, WSU, Cal, Stanford, Oregon and Oregon State. The other sic went to the south.
42. Really hope she is homesick saw ber against purdue and she was fantastic , kept missouri in it.
25. Sharene, you are right. Many of these bloggers hide behind the mask of anonymity and cheer the team on when they win but degrade them when the lose, ignoring the fact that the players are for the most part still teenagers. Its so easy for them to hide behind their fancy made up names playing “know it all blogger” in their little internet world when the fact is most of the time they know very little fact and blog by spreading speculation. Many even claim to be close to the program yet none have mentioned a known fact about a player that would be huge news next year. If they were so close to the program, or knowledgeable about the program, they would have surely have mentioned this by now. The fact that this news has not been discussed on this blog or VT shows how little these bloggers actually know. In fact, bloggers here have made false statements about this player relating to next year which just shows they know very little and simply spread false fact here. Cindy would know. I will not disclose it here as this will only cause a feeding frenzy and more false rumors. This is about an existing player. It is nothing dramatic but is big news. Shoji or the program will release the information when they feel its appropriate. There are a few bloggers that respect the players and understand what the players go through. Most, however, like to play big shot blogger, but really have no substance, hide behind their computer and criticize the players and Shoji. Its funny how they have enjoyed the ride created by Shoji over 39 years and then rip him when the Wahine lose a single match. He is the all-time coach because he knows what he is doing and his record speaks for itself. Its no wonder that Shoji doesn’t read the blogs and tells his players not to read them either because its full of misinformation and unfounded criticism. Unfortunately, even though the players don’t read the blogs, they hear from friends about what the blogs say and it hurt them. I read Cindy’s blog when there’s a headline of interest but then find the mean spirited and baseless comments made by many of you. Its pathetic. While this particular thread was ok, most are filled with unfounded criticism of the players and coaches. Many of you bloggers can’t even bump a ball to save your life and wouldn’t even know how to rotate a player into a set. Let’s see how you bloggers take some criticism, some of your own medicine. Have at it.
13. Brandon and other posts on Nikki and FOY for NW Region. After seeing the actual points for NW Region OH/RS, Nikki tied for 11th with 5 points, and Holt tied for 16th with 1 point. They are the only freshmans on the list. Somebody dropped the ball? A separate submission for Region FOY? Something is not right.
Re: 29 “voting was done prior to the first round”
This is not correct. For the D1 All-Region Awards, the online voting period ended Friday, Dec. 6 (5:00 p.m. EST) – unless the AVCA privately granted via email or phone call an extension possibly due to incremental weather causing online voting problems.
As you know Round 1 was played on Dec. 5 (Thursday) and Dec. 6 (Friday) or was delayed till Saturday for certain teams affected by incremental weather.
There were only 8 matches Thursday night. I doubt very seriously if coaches waited for results to vote on the all region, especially if they were preparing for their own matches
The question was about Colorado State. Their match was finished around 11 p.m. EST Thursday
Besides, there were players whose teams did not make the NCAA tournament so hardly fair to judge them on the postseason when their team did not advance.
Charlie Wade was on the Bobby Curran show this morning talking about starters and newcomers. Olsen and Zarkovic left side, Brook Sedore right side, Kanetake libero, Ramos setter, Holt, Averill and West in a battle for two middle spots. Talked about how Kupono Fey will probably not redshirt and will be competing for playing time in the left side rotation. Looks like another exciting and competitive season!
I very much agree with Sharlene – comment 25
Re: 47. Of course I agree with you 100% that “I doubt very seriously if coaches waited for results to vote on the all region” but it doesn’t matter if there was only 1 match or 8 matches or what you seriously doubt or what I seriously doubt, facts don’t change — voting period ended Friday, Dec. 6 (5:00p.m. EST).
But if you only addressing #3’s confusion on why CSU had 3 regional 1st teamers while Hawai’i had only 1, you are absolutely right to say it had nothing to do with the Round 1 results.
Most of the regional head coaches of the Pacific North have observed CSU players in action, and based on live or broadcast observations during the regular season, the head coaches selected 3 CSU players for All-Region First Team. Apparently few head coaches in this region observed Hawai’i players in action, and thus Longo was left off the All-Region First Team and HM. But she will always be AW (All-World) to her many fans — and rightly so!
~~ Re: 2013 Senior CLASS Award ~~
Of the 10 Finalists for the Award (voting ended Monday), 9 of the 10 made All-Region First Team. Only Ashley Potts (DS/L) from Western Kentucky (Southeast Region) failed to make First Team but was an All-Region HM. (As has been repeated many times on this blog, fan votes are combined with votes by media and D1 Head Coaches to determine the winner.)
The announcement of the Senior CLASS Award winner (and the trophy presentation?) will be made during the NCAA Championship tournament, but I can’t find the specific date so if there’s someone who knows the date, please post it.
I was sure Uiato was going to be on the All-Region team and make at least third team All-America. Technically, she’s beautiful to watch. Oh, well… Maybe UH being in the same region as the PAC-12 teams and ending the season in the second round might have something to do with it. But Taylor was a pleasant surprise.
With Longo not being recognized, Ashley Watanabe is still the only UH libero to achieve AVCA honors with her All-Region honorable mention in 2005.
Dave Shoji was just on the radio with Scott Robbs. Said he talked to Hartong yesterday both her and the coach still not completely over the loss.
Refused to say it out loud, but sounded like he’ll be back to coach next season, expect an official announcement after he meets with everyone on team sometime next week.
50 mentioned that earlier that UH was in a tough region.
that Hawaii was out Saturday had nothing to do with it. voting was done by then
see new thread about Shoji on the radio
53. Technically good, but inconsistent especially on the road and very predictable. I am not surprised she did not make all region.
56. Longo? What do you mean predictable?
Cindy, on Nikki Taylor not being nominated for FOY in the Pacific North Region, what’s up with that? Was it a failure of UH not realizing that because of the splitting of the teams in the BW to two different regions the nominees for the FOY doesn’t have to be the FOY in their respective conferences. Not trying to make a big deal out of this but when I saw that she out voted Holt in the OH/RS position, Nikki would have won the Region’s FOY for the Pacific North Region over Holt. Hope you can come up with an answer, thanks.
it was very confusing and I have no answer. Neither Taylor nor Holt was FOY in their conference.
As mentioned earlier, that Hawaii got put in a region with teams that coaches were more familiar with seems to have dictated the voting. This is not on UH. it is the function of the new selection process which is obviously flawed.
So you’re saying that UH does not have anything to do with submitting players for positions in the Pacific North Region? If that’s the case they know about Taylor, because she has 5 points for OH/RS category as is Holt with 1 point. Nikki and Holt are the only freshman on that list, so what goes? Something is all messed up, I just feel that Nikki should have won that category over Holt and have a great start to her resume for future awards.
Oh, I just came up with one answer, Pac12 and BCS biased to the max.
Believe the selection process starts with the conference selections but I could be wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time. There are 24 coaches who vote in each of the 10 regions. .
Where UH gets involved is when presenting videos of all-region players for all-america
as I said, new process. obviously flawed
Yes obviously flawed. Of the 24 coaches, isn’t Shoji one? Something or somebody fumbled, because there are 4 freshman listed with votes and the fourth with zero (0). Sorry to bother you so much with this worn-out topic. :>)
don’t know if Shoji is or not. He was not voting on the AVCA poll this year.
corrected post. I missed putting the word NOT in originally
Cindy, I believe during the early part of the season, Shoji failed to meet the deadline for AVCA voting and was replaced the rest of the voting season. After that he mentioned that he could see the conference bias in the voting.
66. yes, my bad. omitted the word NOT
i reported in August that Shoji was not voting this year for the first time in a long time
He missed the deadline to reply because he thought it was an email reminder and not a Are you going to vote this year thing.. When he called them a week later, he was told he had been replaced.
He did say later that he saw the bias in the poll voting.
To sum it up, I hope UH learned a little from the Taylor MIA debacle and be on top of awards and stuff. Because as little as our humble players downplay individual awards they deserve all the accolades that they have accomplished. I know that UH monitors these blogs and hope they get the messages.
68. to sum it up, this was not on UH.
Whoops sorry “hot” meant 52, or maybe a message got deleted. Not talking about Longo.
69. Cindy, good post. :>)
