Hawaii up 5-1. TO UH. should be a short night
CSUF hitting negative 167, UH 500
Titans have rallied to within 17-16. OT UH. UH now hitting 179 to Fullerton’s 207.
Taylor 4-0-6, Aeolpho 4-2-8, Hartong 2-1-9, Manu-Olevao 1-2-4, Vorster 0-1-1
UH’s defense seems a little slow to the ball and Fullerton has gotten a couple of shots to fall inside the back line.
UH up 20-18 on an illegal block by the setter. it took the UH bench to yell, back row before the whistle was blown. TO CSF. UH up to 219, CSF 194.
UH wins Set 1 25-22 on Manu-Olevao’s kill. Not pretty
Hawaii hit 282. 19-8-39, 16 digs, 6 by Manu-Olevao, 1 block, 0 aces, 1 SE, Taylor 7-1-10, Hartong 4-1-11, Adopho 4-2-8, Manu-Olevao 2-2-6, Vorster 1-2-3, Uiato 1-0-1
Fullerton .222, 12-4-36, 0 aces, 1 SE, 0 blocks, 10 digs.
Cindy, what is the problem with Uiato/Cindy, what is the problem with Uiato/Vorster for 2 seasons now… set too low? timing?
Manu-Olevao out of the back row, knocks over the libero. drew some ‘that’s going to leave a mark’ when they showed it on the replay.
Taylor hitting well both left and right. Really strong blocking pairing with Adolpho and Manu-Olevao on the right, taking away Fullerton’s LS hitter. UH up 7-2 on a serving run by Longo. TO Titans
Very bad rotation for Fullerton. Longo still serving was 4-2, it’s now 11-2. TO Titans
amazing back set from Uiato, pretty blind on the money to Taylor. Taylor witih another kill it’s 17-2. all Fullerton can do is sub.
Tuaniga in it’s 20-2 Tuaniga in on the block 21-2
Double sub, Goodman and Higgins in at 22=2. now 23-2
Longo with a 19-0 serving run. It’s 23-3
Manu-Olevao with the kill, UH wins 25-5
Taylor having a monster night. Interestingly, Hartong did not have a kill in set 2. Good that others are bringing it.
Fewest points allowed since 11 last season to UOP
UH hit 484 16-1=30, Taylor 15-1-12, Varston 1-2-4, Manu-Olevao 8-2-16, Uiato 1-0-1, Hartong 4-1-13, Adolpho 6-2-13
1 aces, 1 SE, 32 digs, 9 by Longo, 3 blocks
CSUF negative 121. 4-8-33, 0 aces, 1 SE, 21 digs, 0 blocks.
Uiato is such a wonderful setter distributing the ball superbly. Great to see the other outsides taking the pressure off Emily. Finally, Ali Longo you the BOMB!
Nikki Taylor is on fire!!!! CSF has no answer for her. Mita is doing a great job of spreading the ball around. Connection with Middles still needs some work.
15. Hartong 0-0-2, she was playing middle back during Longo’s 19-0 serving run. Uiato went to the hot hitter which was Taylor. 8-0-10 in Set 2.
Nikki is having a career high night. Great job hitting between the block.
19. Yes, I realize that. As I said, it shows others are contributing and the team has other options tonite.
Kastl in for Manu-Olevao in Set 3. UH up 12-9
Uiato blocked on a dump, it’s 12-10. TO UH
Hartong having an off night. Hitting a lot off the block and then getting dug. And she’s been given some good sets. She’s getting served a lot too so maybe some fatigue.
Block by Vorster and Taylor makes it 17-15 UH. TO Titans.
This is the ugly set. Both teams hitting negative.
UH wins 25-20
You can’t have Hartong carrying every match. Great job by Taylor.
I don’t remember a team ever targeting 100 percent of their serves to one player,Emily Hartong, as did Fullerton this match. Again, teams are trying to get her off stride by targeting her with serves and cheating towards her with two blockers. That strategy is not working too well because Taylor, Manu-Olevao, and Adolpho have become strong offense threats, especially in the last few games. Hartong hardly got any swings and kills with her being in the back row when Longo went on her serving run in the 2nd set.
I’d be interested in seeing what the CSUF coach says about what they did on their side of the net that resulted in an off night for Hartong, and getting blitzed by Taylor.
I think Dave should have let Kastl play more because Tai can’t play on Sunday and set two would have been a good time for someone to play in prep for Sunday. As it is he took Kastl out for Tai to go back in. Don’t get me wrong, Tai is becoming my new favorite player and I love her introduction video. Just looking towards the next game…
30. i didn’t speak with the Titan coach but I don’t think anything they did led Hartong to having an ‘off’ night. IMHO it was Hartong taking some trouble sets, not having time to get an approach. You saw her hit a number of times flat-footed. Uiato went to Taylor, the hot hitter, in Set 2, when Hartong was playing middle back during the 20-0 service rn by Longo. She did get dug, was 2-2-13 in Set 3 when no one on the Hawaii side played particularly well after that blowout in Set 2.
As pointed out by the Wichita State coach last week, they felt that they needed to focus on Hartong because from what they saw of Taylor and Manu-Olevao, they were good but not consistent. Taylor was simply more physical than anyone the Titans could put up against her. Uiato did a nice job getting Taylor 1-on-1 opportunities, both sides of the net.
29. Don’t think they are targeting her 100 percent of the time but she is a big part of the serve-receive when she is back there and one of the two primary passers. In most recent memory, teams used to target Danielson much the same way.
Cindy the depth of your Wahine background/history is a treasure. Your insight and recall make me. a simple observer and fan, better and more aware of the strategy and thinking not only by Coach Dave but of other coaches/opponents, too. Thank you so much for all that you do/write. Em is fullfilling her role as senior leader captain along with Mita and Ali. And team is stepping up to contribute in their own ways, too. This is getting to be BIG in so many ways. Go Wahine!
Cindy, regarding #33. After the Wichita State tournament in which I saw on video all three teams target Hartong on serves, I focused on whether Fullerton would use the same strategy. As I said before, I was amazed because Fullerton did not serve anyone except to Hartong and I DELIBERATELY kept close track of this throughout the match. If someone else received a serve it was only because she “poached” the serve in front of Hartong.
In a way, the strategy of targeting Hartong on serves did work if Shoji is to be believed. He stated that one of the major reasons Hartong had an “off” night was her concern about passing. With teams targeting her, Hartong will be THE primary receiver and passer for the rest of the season. The work this involves—I would guess opposing coaches believe—will tire her out. I’m not too sure if this will be true. Hartong is in such great physical shape and is, by reputation, a tireless worker.
35-36. thank you for your attention to that detail. It wasn’t what I was watching for other than to know that she is the primary S-R person when she is back there.
34. scary that I can remember 20-30 years ago but last week … not so much. Thank you for your kind words. I’m just doing my job.
