Accordingly Digg’n Na Wahine, the UH media guide for the Wahine was just released. Is this true? Almost two months after the season has begun!!! I am totally unimpressed with Dave Matlin and his ability to improve the Athletic Dept. Total incompetence if this is true. How can these UH employees get away with their inability to do their jobs?

  2. darkfire October 23, 2015 10:23 am

    1. What kind of publication is Digg’n Na Wahine?

  3. kimo browner October 23, 2015 10:41 am

you are absolutely correct. It starts at the top. We have issues with Football and Wahine Soccer. There appears to be a prevailing culture at UHAD that you do not need to work to collect a pay check. Severance for failure is rewarded not penalized. Tax payers should be livid.

  4. H-Man October 23, 2015 10:53 am

The distressing part of the late release of the Wahine media guide, if true, is the amount of money it costs to maintain the Sports Media Department which cost $566, 384.00 to operate in 2014. So with all this money being spent, they cannot meet deadlines? Probably no accountability. Let’s see if Matlin makes a difference. Conner, cannot turn an aircraft carrier around so quickly. Matlin has been in office for a little more than 4 months.

  5. connor October 23, 2015 11:27 am

#2 I got it from another blog.

#4 Agree with your comments, except that Matlin was in charge 2 months ago when the media guide should have been published. He doesn’t need 5 years to have the authority to demand that the employees produce as expected. He was the AD when the vb season began and should have been aware that the media guide was not published.

  6. jkjones October 23, 2015 11:38 am

We do not need an Aircraft Carrier to run UH athletics. We need a PT boat commander responding quickly who rolls up his sleeves, makes no excuses and gets his hands into the Manoa muck, sooner than later. WE have heard this “give it time” line before with Frazier all the way up to Ben Jay. Hermie promised to balance the budget and BJ said he would end mediocrity. Donovan was fleeced like a naive child.
Matlin promised order and competence. Really? UH Lawyers still have not completed Ganot’s contract. That’s exclusively on his watch, he owns that responsibility. We paid out Arnold $700,000 after firing him…exactly, when does accountability attach? If Matlin can not oversee a simple program guide for a legendary program that produces black numbers, what else is in store for tax payers under his realm.

  7. Andrew October 23, 2015 1:44 pm

    6.

I don’t know but to be honest I think the failures of the legal department over the contracts are more of an issue with the Chancellor than the AD. The legal department is more a part of upper campus. Not saying the AD has no responsibility in the matter, but I think that should fall more on the Chancellor.

  8. Nomu October 23, 2015 2:13 pm

is that why we hear absolutely nothing from Matlin? Time to start soliciting support by partnering with previously untapped sources. We have a lot to offer, and we need more innovative, creative thinking to get there. The opportunities are there and someone has to take ownership. It can be done by not sitting on our hands. Time to roll up the sleeves. This time, it has to start with a significant commitment of monies directly to athletics from the most obvious source. And changing the existing culture so our AD can do what he knows needs to be done. Time for accountability in the UH administration, starting from the top.

    6. Add $148,000 paid to Gib which was due to him for this year to June 30 plus $250,000 to the UH outside attorney, it comes out to $ 1,098,000.

    7. The UH Legal Department is a UH system wide office under President Lassner. However, the former AD Donovan and Chancellor Hinshaw should have been able to know what was in the contract they were signing approval for.

  10. greenthumb October 23, 2015 2:43 pm

Did a little online exploration and found online versions of media guides for several other years. No luck at the UH site for the 2015 version. And the URLs of the earlier guides looks to be driven by what day the guides went live, so it doesn’t seem possible to “guess around” for the current version.

As an example here is a link to the UH site for the 2013 Wahine Volleyball media guide.

It’s accessible from the WVB page.

  12. kimo browner October 23, 2015 4:05 pm

    @Lincoln, #3 NEB Trailing #9 MINN, 1-2 (23-25, 22-25, 26-24).
    @Austin #2 TEX 2-0 over #7 and undefeated Kansas (25-16, 25-19).
    @Eugene, #10 UCLA 1-1 v #25 OREG

  13. kimo browner October 23, 2015 4:38 pm

#9 MINN upsets #3 NEB 3-1 on the road (25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 27-25). Gophers are likely to leap frog HAW to #7 if they beat Iowa SUN.
#7 Kansas (0-3) loss to Texas and will drop Jayhawks behind #8 Haw.
#10 UCLA likely to move too if #6 Ohio State losses on SUN to #23 MICH.
Buckeyes lost to #31 MSU on WED.

  14. menehune October 23, 2015 5:13 pm

    UCLA over Oregon in four.

  15. H-Man October 23, 2015 6:03 pm

I love the comments. Yes, I concede there should be no excuses. On another subject, you guys watching the San Diego St – Utah St game? San Diego St leading in the 1st half 34-7. Their performance (so far) makes me feel better about our loss to them.

  16. Big Island VB fan October 23, 2015 7:17 pm

Meanwhile Cal Poly beat CSUN 25-22, 25-22, 25-16. I think that Long Beach will beat Cal Poly tomorrow at the Blue Pyramid since Long Beach has Tara Murray back and healthy.

  17. Doug October 23, 2015 8:16 pm

thanks everyone for the game updates.

  18. rayson October 23, 2015 9:31 pm

    16. Personally, I’m rooting for Cal Poly but I think it’s going to be a be a very close 5-set match that can go either way. I really hope this is the beginning of the rise of another Big West program. Hawaii needs a stronger Big West conference. A couple years ago CSUN and UCSB looked to be finally building strength but they’ve fizzled out recently.

  19. noblesol October 23, 2015 10:41 pm

#16 Big Island. Correction, Ashley Murray.

  20. Hapaguy October 23, 2015 11:16 pm

13 Kimo agree with you that I don’t see Hawaii moving up in the poll even though 4 teams ahead of us lost this weekend. As of this writing I do think that Ohio St and Kansas both drop below us but I see a shuffling above us and also Minnesota and maybe Stanford as well as UCLA leapfrogging us….

  21. Cindy Luis October 24, 2015 12:57 am

Always interesting to check in after being away for a while.
and comments by some who aren’t aware of actual situation.
IE: blame someone for a media guide not being printed on time even though media guides are no longer printed.

As with most schools, the UH media relations department no longer prints media guides for the general public in all sports but they are available online. And this has been done for several years

Media relations does print out guides for credentialed media in certain sports as a courtesy. But it’s no longer hard cover, cover is regular printer paper.

Used to be that schools would print media guides and sell them. No longer the case with the majority of schools cutting out printing costs.

Likely an oversight by media relations to update the link since they’ve changed the person who is in charge of volleyball.

My question: Was it that big of a deal? No one noticed until now 2014 info was in the online season archives. And if one needed the current roster it was also online,

  22. Cindy Luis October 24, 2015 1:14 am

    2) Texas def. 7) Kansas 25-16, 25-19, 25-14

    4) Washington def. Cal 25-15, 30-28, 25-16
    10) UCLA def. Oregon 25-22, 19-25, 28-26, 29-27
    11) Stanford def. Washington State 25-20, 25-20, 25-19
    13) Arizona State def. Utah 25-14, 25-17, 25-23

  23. NotNasti October 24, 2015 9:47 am

Cindy, for some people, if they are not complaining or blaming someone, they have nothing to say . . . especially since everyone who posts online is “perfect.”

  24. jmy October 24, 2015 12:06 pm

    LMU beat BYU in 5…

  25. menehune October 24, 2015 2:41 pm

Wichita State over Indiana State, 3-0. Wichita State firmly entrenched in first place in their conference.

  26. LanaiBoy October 24, 2015 4:41 pm

Wisconsin beat Nebraska in four in this nationally televised game. Carlini looked good; so smooth as a setter.

  27. jmy October 24, 2015 4:56 pm

Beach getting crushed by Cal Poly…

  28. doug October 24, 2015 5:30 pm

Watch Wiconsin and Nebraska too. They are BIG and athletic.
