Friday checkin: Warriors, Smith, et al

pyr

Good morning from Long Beach, a beautiful day in the 562.
This is the view from the top-floor restaurant at the team’s hotel off the 405

Both teams have serve-and-pass today, The Beach goes 11-noon, Hawaii 1-2
will be headed to both.

As for Emma Smith transferring, it’s on her instagram. That’s the only confirmation I have that she is headed to Cal VB

BYU tried to fly out this morning from Long Beach airport. Plane delayed. When things are going badly …

.

it will be interesting to see what happens Sunday with the at large. as many saw via press conference links, it was discussed by all four coaches. UCI still thinks they have the resume but when looking at the RPI i think the ‘Eaters ore the odd man out.

someone suggested that Ohio State tank the match vs. GCU so that the MPSF only gets two teams. I had asked Wade about that last week. His thought was that Ohio State wouldn’t want to chance having to do a play-in game. I think that regardless of OSU winning or losing, they still get a top-2 seed so they would lose nothing by losing to GCU.

It does make things interesting. and we won’t find out until Sunday 7 a.m. HST ncaa.com.

If OSU tanks to GCU, there would be enough stench around that performance that even the NCAA selection committee would smell it.

  2. Ron April 21, 2017 6:45 am

The only sure way is to keep on winning. Long Beach is very good but so are we. Our superiority at setter should be the edge we need.

Question regarding Beach Bows….how critical is it for them to win the Big West Tourney this weekend?

  4. vballfreak808 April 21, 2017 7:30 am

A Grand Canyon win may also benefit Hawaii as it will help with their RPI taking down the higher ranked team.

    3. It is not that critical for them to win it as the teams behind them in the at-large hunt in the west do not have as good of records against top teams. As long as they do not implode badly in the semis they should be fine. The only implication they want to have is regarding seeding. If they beat LBSU they tie in this years series record but Hawaii has the win over Pepperdine where LBSU does not. So Hawaii would possibly get the 5th seed at highest and maybe face Pepperdine or Florida State which were all close games this season.

    4. Big West is next weekend, April 28-29

think you don’t want to leave it up to the committee. Even though the power is clearly in the west, they have to balance the field with midwest-east selections.
It may not be critical but they need to at least reach the final of the event IMO

“I think that regardless of OSU winning or losing, they still get a top-2 seed so they would lose nothing by losing to GCU”

I would find it hard to believe that after losing to the #14 ranked team (latest poll and RPI) that OSU (#2 RPI latest) would still be a top 2 seed.

  7. Cindy Luis April 21, 2017 10:02 am

    7. Just my opinion.

  8. Cindy Luis April 21, 2017 10:03 am

    6. saw that. thanks. Not too surprised.

  9. haleiwacrossfitter April 21, 2017 10:55 am

I think what Ohio st has done during the year had earned them a top 2 ranking. Look at the women’s seedlings, happpens all the time.

I was the one that mentioned Ohio st tanking it to limit the amount of mpsf teams getting in and getting eiva exposure nationally. It could happen. Gamesmanship.

  10. Warriorfan April 21, 2017 11:02 am

Osu wouldn’t want to lose they want the number 1 seed , they lose they drop to 2 seed and have to most likely face the two mpsf teams back to back anyway.

  11. T103 April 21, 2017 11:55 am

Just out of curiosity, do u think that because this is headed into the tournament, LBSU setter will get called for deep dishing?? I remember watching him at SSC last year and with him serving up them deep dishes you would think he works for pizza hut or something.

  12. jm2375 April 21, 2017 1:27 pm

Just got an email from UH to MVB season ticket holders to reserve our seats for a possible NCAA play-in match. Deadline is Sunday. Same price as the MPSF playoff game ($16+3 fee).

  13. T103 April 21, 2017 2:31 pm

Jm2375, did they give u a possible date/day that we might play IF it ends up in that scenario?

  14. Robin April 21, 2017 3:10 pm

If UH hosts, I’m thinking its a slam dunk that the #5 seed will be the EIVA champ (Penn State or St. Francis), with the #6 seed being the Conference Carolinas champ. Either as a #3 or #4, if the Bows can’t take care of a decided underdog flying in from the East Coast, they wouldn’t deserve to go to Columbus. However, if they do play at SSC vs EIVA or CC, it ain’t happening (an upset). All I’m waiting for is OSU to take care of business.

  15. jm2375 April 21, 2017 3:24 pm

    14. Sat 4/29, no time listed. Didn’t say if it’s both games or just UH’s.

Anyone know why NoClueAtAll is being so secretive/wishy-washy about the play-in games (or is it OSU)? The website for the Final 4 doesn’t mention the play-in games like it’s done in previous years.

  16. Robin April 21, 2017 3:29 pm

    jm2375

I think if OSU loses MIVA and has to play in the play-in games, the NCAA would have the 2 games in Columbus. If they win (as likely), they would hardly draw a crowd for the Tuesday play-in games at the Final Four site without OSU- hence the ‘trial’ host sites. Also, I think the games are not such a draw that they can’t ‘force’ fans to buy all-game packages for Tues-Thur-Sat.

  17. blunite April 21, 2017 4:56 pm

    – Unless Jennings keeps those sets low it won’t be pretty.

    – Cal is getting a talented libero in Emma Smith, wish her well. Half expected Iosia to transfer after she was told to switch to the slow high ball sets last season. At any rate we are past what could have been,

    – Wish everyone happy blogging, one of you will probably get my seat (not renewing my season tickets) and take my place as a donor.

  18. Kahuna April 21, 2017 6:49 pm

I don’t think someone like OSU is going to “tank”. I also don’t think the players will take it kindly if the coaches want them to play junk to keep the MPSF from getting 3 in. The players are fierce competitors and want to win every single time out. They should not be concerned if the MIVA only get one in. It’s not their problem.

Most coaches hate to lose more than they love to win. If that is the case, losing to Grand Canyon would affect them going forward and I don’t think they want that.

  19. Hot April 21, 2017 9:59 pm

Smith is a huge loss. She’s the best passer on the team. I’m hoping that Guinasso steps it up and makes a difference. After all, she has the “best passing platform on the team” according to Hall (which makes you wonder why she hasn’t been used for passing more).

  20. noblesol April 21, 2017 10:15 pm

Re E. Smith, there is a Hawaii connection. Kolby Kanetake, volunteer asst. coach, the Bears indoor staff. I wonder if he is hoping for a raise. http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/01/20/its-official-cal-athletics-bleeding-cash-at-astounding-rate/

  21. Kazu April 22, 2017 7:16 am

Another position open’s up at the AD. Wonder if Hall and Baxter will still be on staff
when the season starts. Bet some of the players might have that in their minds. One thing on my mind is how will recruiting be,does Robyn have connection on the mainland.

  22. Don Williams April 22, 2017 8:00 am

    12. YES!!! Tuininga is a serious deep disher! I hope they have an excellent R1 that doesn’t take any crap from Knipe or the 40-whiners about deep dishing.

  23. rabbit ears April 22, 2017 8:17 am

20 – agree, Guinasso just needs a chance to get in there on a regular basis. I thought she always was just as good as emma smith.

  24. Ron April 22, 2017 8:30 am

Blunite,I have enjoyed your contributions to the blob, good luck on what ever is next for you. I agree with Hot and rabbit ears, Guinasso has been under utilized . She is quick and always in position. If given the chance, she will get the job done.

  25. greenthumb April 22, 2017 10:48 am

Wishing the men’s team all the best today. Any idea what the attendance is likely to be?

  26. warriorfan April 22, 2017 11:02 am

    27. less than Half of what UH would get for this match at the SSC.

  27. jm2375 April 22, 2017 12:29 pm

    27. Capacity listed as 4200. No attendance figure listed for the UH-BYU game. UCI-LBSU game was <2500. If the match had been at the SSC, attendance would probably have been around 7K.

  28. warriorfan April 22, 2017 1:50 pm

    OSU up 2-0.

  29. warriorfan April 22, 2017 1:53 pm

Penn State up 2-0 in Eiva Final also.

  30. warriorfan April 22, 2017 2:00 pm

Ohio State looks good, granted Grand Canyon is not great competition but they will be at home , I think I’d rather UH face BYU or Long Beach again in Neutral floor in the semis,OSU french guy’s serve will give UH passers Fits.

  31. warriorfan April 22, 2017 2:01 pm

Up 12- 2 in the third I think it’s safe to say OSU wins the MIVA and the Warriors are officially locked as the at large if they don’t win today.

  32. Robin April 22, 2017 2:25 pm

    My seeding predictions:
    If Hawaii wins-
    #1 Ohio State
    #2 LBSU
    #3 Hawaii
    #4 BYU
    #5 Penn State
    #6 Barton

    If LBSU wins:
    #1 Ohio State
    #2 LBSU
    #3 BYU
    #4 Hawaii
    #5 Penn State
    #6 Barton

  33. warriorfan April 22, 2017 2:53 pm

    35. Hard to decide which scenario is best. Just hope UH stays hot and peaks two saturdays from now.

  34. Cindy Luis April 22, 2017 3:21 pm

    new thread up for Saturday
Had mentioned several times it would be Saturday the 25th if they opt for play-in sites at host institutions and not May 2 at Ohio State.
    We’ll see what happens 7 a.m. HST ncaa.com.
