Day 1, practice 2

sorry for the delay, issues with UHM wireless. never strong on a Saturday.

Anyway, not a lot of difference from the routine this morning. Agility drills then a lot of serve and pass. Small groups working out by position. At the moment, Wong hitting to the OHs, Baxter to the Ls and MBs and Ah Mow-Santos to the setters for passing drills.

On the other thread, someone had asked who looked good.
Long does out of the back row especially. I hope she gets more of a look. She could be a standout player on most any other program.
Adolpho does look quicker to the outside on the couple of stepouts she did.
In the blocking drills, when the coaches are on the boxes hitting over the net, Hartong and Manu-Olevao very solid.
Hadn’t seen much of Higgins in high school Some have compared her to Kamana’o. Haven’t seen that yet but she does have nice hands.

  2. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 4:41 pm

Cindy, how is Long’s backrow defense. If it is good, then she can be a weapon, playing DS. She could be a little bit of a liability playing up front, due to her height.

  3. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 4:44 pm

I think Long is pretty solid in the back row and I like her 3-meter attack.
One court has begun to do sets by Higgins to the right side, which includes Goodman and Kastl and stepouts to the middles. Uiato just made an amazing set off a shanked ball cross court 30 feet on Court 2.

  4. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 4:50 pm

Kastl, RS, she proved last year she could not play that position. Predominantly a LS hitter, only. I am thinking, the RS will come down to 3 players, Olevao, Goodman, or Taylor. If neither one of those 3 can win that position, then Hartong.

  5. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 4:51 pm

DF, you have asked who is on the RS. just telling you who is working out right now on one court. No need to be so obsessed so early. Kastl has switched courts and now hitting sets in the middle along with Hartong and Manu-Olevao, Long has switched courts and hitting some right-side sets.

  6. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 4:57 pm

Sorry, Cindy, how does Olevao look. I imagine she is much better, and more confident then she was last year.

  7. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:00 pm

Besides, as mentioned many times, UH’s offense has the RS hitting twice right, once left; the LSs left twice, once right. they play both sides at some point in the front-row rotation unless there is a specific blocking sub.
I do see Taylor on the right because of her size. She and Vorster would put up a huge block if together in the lineup. But don’t see Taylor as a true Opp

  8. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:02 pm

    6. thought i mentioned that Manu-Olevao looked good in the blocking drills.
Hard to say really who ‘looks good’. not like they have anyone in front of them blocking their shots.

  9. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:04 pm

    7. Why do you say, you do not see Taylor as a true Opp, Cindy, just wondering.

  10. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:12 pm

Just saw a clip of practice, on the News. Nikki Taylor looks huge, Heather Bown body type, but playing on the outside.

  11. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:13 pm

Mini scrimmage time. but noone keeping score.Guess you call this the first unit front line. Uiato setting, Hartong LS, Vorster MB, Taylor RS. Long BR and Kawamura DS. Other side, Higgins setting, Goodman RS, Kastl LS, Adolpho MB, Olevao BR. Passi DS

  12. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:17 pm

New unit no RS with Uiato front right, Long LS, Adolpho MB. other side has goodman setting Hartong LS, Vorster MB, Taylor RS.

  13. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:18 pm

    10. Taylor is big, didn’t see the Bown-esque. My first thought was Lori Garber.

  14. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:21 pm

I do see this team running a lot of 3-meter attacks, Hartong, Manu-Olevao and Long can be very effective.

  15. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:25 pm

Wow, try hitting over that wall, Hartong, Vorster, and Taylor. If it ever comes to that, it could be the BIGGEST wall, the Wahines have ever put up, in a very long time. Not only big, but a very physical wall, also.

  16. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:26 pm

Wow, try hitting over that wall, Hartong, Vorster, and Taylor. If it ever comes to that, it could be the BIGGEST wall, the Wahines have ever put up, in a very long time. Not only big, but a very physical wall, also. Can you think of a bigger wall then that, Cindy?

  17. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:30 pm

    16. yes, I can think of bigger. Texas will be huge. but the three you mention does give UH a big front line of 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
Watching in the arena today is the King Kekaulike volleyball team.

  18. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:38 pm

My dream lineup would be as follows: Hartong (LS1), Olevao (LS2), Uiato (Setter), Vorster (MB1), Taylor (RS), Adolpho (MB2), Longo (L), Longo (DS). I believe though, Shoji will bring Taylor along slowly, use her as a blocking specialist, at the beginning, see her starting by the time Conference season starts.

  19. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:43 pm

    18. That should have been Ginger Long (DS).

  20. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:44 pm

looks like they’ll be done by 6. team is stretching at the moment.
everyone came out looking healthy. a good first day.

  21. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:50 pm

Healthy, is a good way to end practice. Here’s hoping all the Fall Practices end that way.

  22. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:51 pm

Molokai High also here. Shoji said the best thing about today was they don’t have to play their way into shape. he is very happy with the conditioning offseason and the shape the team is in right now.

  23. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:53 pm

Heading back to Kailua. Be back on later. Team doing some pictures with King K and Molokai players. Too cute.

  24. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 5:54 pm

That must have made Adolpho happy, seeing the Molokai High girl’s volleyball team, in the stands.

I have a hard time posting.

  26. Dedicatedfan August 11, 2013 11:02 am

Cindy, are the Wahines practicing today, Sunday? If so, will you be attending practice?

  27. Hot August 11, 2013 12:24 pm

I’m curious about how Passi fits into the lineup. Did she get any front row reps? Who among the DS was impressive?

  28. Cindy Luis August 11, 2013 12:56 pm

DF, yes, they are practicing today. they have 2. Think Ann was going this morning. I’ll be there in a few hours.
Don’t know how Passi will fit in. or when. If she redshirts, then we’ll see it next year. Reminds me a little physically of Satele.
    27. hard to tell about the DSs because the scrimmages were more about the front row players and using hitters out of the back grow.

  29. Dedicatedfan August 11, 2013 1:28 pm

Cindy, I have heard that Passi will be redshirting this year. Can you clarify that with Dave, when you see him. Believe Passi wants to redshirt this year.

  30. Cindy Luis August 11, 2013 1:44 pm

    29. Ann had it in her story that Passi was redshirting so unless something drastic happens that likely is the plan. It makes sense. She has 2 years to play and they have plenty OHs
    27. Hot, found a number of your same comments in spam so that might have been why you have had trouble posting. You also posted using different ID but the same address and that triggers a flag that puts things in spam.
I also have been having problems with notifications that there are comments so all I can ask for now is that you don’t keep resending the same comments.
As for Passi, played a little in the front Don’t remember her getting set that much.

  31. Msrpantoja1@Huh.'A'loha August 11, 2013 1:52 pm

Sorry. but for those of us who can remember:

    “Lori Garber”..
    🙁

  32. LC August 11, 2013 2:19 pm

Anyone taking a guess on where the Wahine will be in tomorrow’s AVCA Poll ?

    I have a range of 8th – 10th

  33. Kazu August 11, 2013 3:22 pm

I’ll go 11 or 12 in the polls. Don’t think they will be in top 10.

  34. Cindy Luis August 11, 2013 3:25 pm

Think if Croson had stayed, Top 8. now, maybe 8-12
It’s usually round up the usual suspects with the coaches.
    obviously texas No. 1

  35. Cindy Luis August 11, 2013 3:27 pm

    31. was just saying Garber in terms of body type. if you go by hair, Taylor a bigger version of Veronica Lima

  36. Hot August 11, 2013 6:57 pm

Cindy, every time I would post, it takes forever to load, so I end up refreshing the page and then the whole thing is resubmitted. I tried using a different ID because I thought my username might have been blocked or something.
