Congrats to 4 Warriors, Reyes, Sakaida all-academic MPSF
Taylor Averill, Johann Timmer, Matthew Cheape and Harriors Phelps all named to the MPSF all-academic team. As was Kamehameha grad Jaylen Reyes, libero for BYU, and ‘Iolani grad Scott Sakaida, Stanford libero.
UH the only school not to release GPAs of the players but they had to have at least a 3.0.

Im so glad were moving on past this drama, as a fan, I have minimize my postings here and other blogs about this issue knowing that if Jane wants to stay, she would have straighten things out and would still be a Wahine, but if she no longer wants to be one and to not have to face the consequences on being one, then let her move on. The team will be better going forward without her. Good luck to her and thanks for the exciting times she contributed while as a Wahine.

Warriorfan, I totally agree with you. I am also hoping Shoji/Wong can pull a first rate outside hitter, who can also play the back row, out of their hat. Cause if they do not, this Wahine team will struggle to make the NCAA Tournament, even with Emily Hartong. There are no proven outside hitters, who can also play the back row with any kind of consistency, on the current roster, which includes the incoming players.

Dave says they will be more physical on the outsides as far as athleticism and power goes.He actually sounds like he is relieved that this is over and done with.
Reading between the lines Ali Longo’s statement indicates to me that this is no big deal to the rest of the team.
I’m excited to watch the Wahine VB team this upcoming season. It’s going o be a great season with very little or no drama. I think you’re right Last Call (10), Shoji is relieved that the situation is over and done and now he and his coaching staff can move forward and actually focus on the team and their best interest. She sucked so much out of the program. And, as Longo has stated, as I’m sure the entire team would agree, this is no big loss. Ashley Kastl, inconsistent both on the outside and in the back row. Tai Manu-Olevao, erratic on the outside, worse in the back row. Nikki Taylor, an unproven player at the D1 Level. Does not leave Shoji much to chose from. Cannot win a National Championship with just one Outside Hitter. Ali Longo needs to cover 3/4 of the back row, if the Wahine will do anything. Otherwise, the setter will be running all over the court. At least the Wahine will have 2 setters, so if one is winded from chasing down balls, the other can come in.
Real strange comments coming from Dave Shoji, on all the Newscast Channels. Saying, Jane Croson’s decision to transfer, caught everyone by surprise, coaching staff and players. He says, that he wanted Jane Croson to be part of the 2013 team. But in the StarAdvertiser, he says just the opposite, so does Ali Longo, who seems to be speaking for the players. Hmmm, makes one start to think, what is really going on with the Wahine Volleyball program. Why are the coaches and players speaking with folk tongue.
It’s all BS… People in the program knew she waa unhappy… her facebook said it all. /the sand season said it all… Fake.
and I heard it wasn’t that she wasn’t having good grades, it was because she wasn’t in school, that led her to GPA problems. And Dave’s people knew she was unhappy for a long time now. Just come out with everything.

Just suck it up and do what students are supposed to do. In the long run, it’ll all be to one’s benefit. Tell the locals/friends that the beach is ONLY a last option, after all things school related, during the season esp.!
Dave–I’m certain–would NOT reject any plan/vision at a return to the “second home”. Restore what’s exclusively made in paradise; relish the aloha but know that the mere ‘surfacey’ feel to it IS Hawai’i. Get past it and look out for you. He’s with you.

PERHAPS as a form of positive reinforcement, Shoji could intentionally give passes/”free days” on the daily 6:30am practice sessions. Rotate athletes on good behavior (classes having been attended that is); give some wiggle room for leniency/’sleeping in’ which could work.

Dude, you need to just chill. Hartong was good as a freshman, better as a sophomore and great as a junior. Tai and Jade show the same promise. Kalei will get back into VB shape quick and be a force in the middle. Give this team a chance before writing them off.
As for winning a National Championship, only one team wins that each year. Success is measured in more ways that National Championships, especially in college athletics.

Setaone, Shoji said that Jane came to the coaches and requested the transfer. He said that he and the team were hoping that Jane could be convinced to stay but she said she was “homesick” and was not enjoying volleyball and wanted to move on. He said that she would be a big loss and that they were counting on her to have a big year. He is hopeful that the other girls would step up to fill the void left by Jane. She was released from her scholarship and is free to accept one somewhere else:however, she can’t play next year. PS- Your comments in#19 are right on!
dedicatedSteve/Laura, please take your meds. UH will be just fine without Croson. Croson came in and started as a freshman and did OK. Maybe Taylor will too, you know? And Olevao might have improved well enough to take over. IMO, they should be more concerned in the back row, with Croson and Maeda’s departure.
Im actually not concerned with the backrow. Jane was very erratic usually, especially her passing. I think playing Taylor in the front row and Maybe Passi/Long/Kawamura/Lelepali in the backrow will be an adequate replacement.
Of course I hope they can get an impact transfer or foreigner late.
I agree that Croson was as erratic in the back row as she was in the front, but she was more reliable (IMO) passer than Hartong, who shared passing duties with Emily Maeda. Croson passed six rotations. With Croson and Maeda both gone, it could mean Hartong would need to pass all six rotations, or she could pass half and the other OH would need to pass six. And that would mean one of the DSs will need to play three rotations in the back row.
Keani Passi was a primary passer for CSI last season when she was named player of the year for their conference. I’m sure she’ll step in to help solidify the passing for Hawaii.
That’s what I think, I think she’s the first off the bench because of her serve, unless Ginger’s serve has really improved. I can See Passi playing backrow for Nikki Taylor or Tai.
Just wondering but wasn’t it Passi that said she was going to redshirt this season?
vballfreak808, #31, Yes, Passi did say that she was going to redshirt, but that was before this Croson thing came about. She may change her mind now about redshirting. Shoji tends to leave it up to the player whether to redshirt or not.

Just wondering, if Hannah Rooks is on a Sand Volleyball scholarship for 2013-14, can she be taken off of the Sand Volleyball Scholarship and put on the Indoor Scholarship for 2013, since Shoji now has a scholarship available for 2013?

There are 16 on the Sand Fall Roster which does not include a single indoor player. Think SW is focusing on moving toward a Sand only roster. Could be quite a fight to make top 10 (travel team) with players coming in for solely for Sand. Should make for a great travel/competition team for the 2014 season!!
IMHO, if indoor players make the travel roster, they should be exempt from indoor practices during the Sand season. They should be able to focus on one season at a time. Only fair to the program as a whole as well as teammates.
As for sand “commits”, doesnt always equate to sand scholarships.

50. Mainlandgal can you name those 16? I only count 8 returnees (Tiegs, mount, Zalopany, Urban, Miyashita, Johnson, Riggs and Spieler) and 5 recruits (Delgado,Chow,Shinn, Cook and Tucker) So missing three more.
When Dave talked about who might replace the girl who just left he mentioned,Goodman, Long, Tai, Kastl and Taylor and no one from the sand team.If someone from sand was being considered he would have said so.
He also mentioned that none of those 5 girls have the all-around game and knowledge that Jane did. It will take 2 or 3 of them to replace her.

Also I know Koelsch is a sand recruit but she would be good for indoors. Yes she is setting now because Kelsey Humphreys is training with the Junior National Team and Kyra Goodman is injured.
I’d prefer they let the sand players be sand players and go out and recruit overlooked indoor girls, or get transfers/foreigners.

LC, I am not for Croson, and not against the Wahines. I am still hoping, praying, that 2 of the following 3 players, Kastl, Olevao, and Taylor, can really step up and perform, this coming season. As proven last year, the Wahines cannot just ride the arm of Hartong, if they want a chance to win a National Championship. If 2 of those 3 girls, really steps up their game, they do have a legitimate chance to win a National Championship, if not, then it will be somewhat like last year.
Steve, your posts her and on VT say otherwise. Croson is gone and that’s it. Yes, she contributed a lot on offense, defense and passing. But she was also a weak blocker and her hitting percentage has been among the lowest of the UH left sides in years, with the exception of Waber and Ferrell. So UH loses their second most prolific attacker and digger, but along with her departure goes the erratic play, inconsistencies and drama. Someone will just have to step in and replace her, and UH will move on.
Is Croson allowed to play sand at her next school for the next coming season?
I doubt she got a realease from beach volleyball coaches either. She will probably have to sit out both seasons next year.

I believe Croson will have to sit out a full season for both indoor and sand. She competed as a member of the team during preseason and season, therefor is exempt from play for a year.
Lets all move on to the upcoming seasons of both indoor and sand. There’s a lot to look forward to, amazing players returning, new players coming in and less drama to zap out the fun!!!
63. I believe she is eligible to play sand at the next school IF she is academically eligible. she has to attain junior status to play sand. Don’t know if she passes this semester. It did sound as if she wasn’t attending classes, if you read between the lines, such as ‘left off the travel squad to concentrate on academics.’
She doesn’t need a release from the sand team because she was not on scholarship.
