Comments from Danielson following exhibition
Not going to stay too long. It’s freezing in here.
Danielson came by. Asked her how she was feeling. She is still recouping from meniscus surgery (left knee) which was in June. She’s been limited in her jumping and knew she’d only play in two sets. Thought the crowd was really good and she was happy to play in the arena again. Said it was always an amazing experience. And happy to speak English since she doesn’t get to much while in Japan.
Said she is looking forward to her season but that she knows it’s going to be a long one. Team leaves Friday so she won’t be here to watch the Wahine play.
Also ran into Ashley Watanabe prior to the match. She has been back from Guam, where she was working her family’s franchise (think it’s Taco del Mar). Said she is now doing Real Estate.
Heading back to Kailua before it gets any colder in here.
Wonder how the Pro Japanese team feels knowing that they didn`t play the Wahine with their best starters on the floor the whole match. Wonder if they feel slighted that UH didn’t give them their best shot.
I don`t think I`ve ever seen stats so bad for the Wahine this season up till now. Hitting .110 for the match. Long 0K – 6E

Don’t think players who are being paid to win/play really care what the team across the net looks like. If it was my job I’d go hard and play to win every point. Wahine on the other hand, want to get out with no serious injuries, it doesn’t count on their season record and is more akin to an alumnae match. Wahine dtd their part and Queenseies did their job. Go Wahine!

1. both teams didn’t keep their starters in. there was no ‘slight’ involved. you are reading way too much into the stats. UH at times ran a 6-2, they ran a lot of players in and out. Sets to Long not the greatest. couple of times she got a hand on the ball as the set went over her head and it counted as an error. at least once the set was outside the antenna.

It was always intended to be an exhibition. They weren’t going to risk injury for a meaningless match.

Well now I know why Kanani didn’t play with the national team this summer. Hope she has a great second pro season and she can play for the national next summer.
Amazing how some people look at only the negatives first. This is an exhibition match that does not count but great for the wahines to work against a different kind of team speed and be able to play all the players on both sides.
This was just an exhibition match giving many of the wahine players who don’t have playing time an opportunity to play in a game setting. Geezus, some of you are looking at stats and analyzing this and that just makes me nauseated. Just take this match for what it was worth….AN EXHIBITION! Nothing more and nothing less.
On a positive note, I thought Emily played her best defensive game of the season. She also made some incredible shots. Longo and Mita were good enough to play pro right now. Higgins showed that she will be very good. Tai and Niki are works-in-progress with great up side. This could be our year but there are about 10 teams out there who can win it all and we are one of them!
Wasn’t there but heard the Toyota team played at a quicker-tempo. Is that something Hawaii can adopt now or does it take time and lots of practice to implement. Cause if that 5’7 OH from Toyota could achieve 16 kills with NO ERRORS against the 6th-ranked team in the country, that quick-tempo offense would be something to consider right?
I’d love to see one of the higher rated Asian players consider Hawaii, but assume that with the professional and industrial vb leagues that are well established throughout the region the promising athletes are all spoken for. And that is not even factoring in the Qlympic aspirations. But wasn’t the Chinese star Ping allowed to come and coach in the US after her playing career? I think it would add ‘spice’ and flavor to the game here. Do not however believe for a second that collegiate players would be able to dedicate as much effort or time to maintaing the uptempo game demonstrated by Toyota, too much fine tuning for student-athletes. But agree that playing against such a team raise’s ones view of what is humanly possible to achieve on the court. Go Wahine! Reposted from comment in response to Ann’s game article.
Emily had some great defensive plays but she really had trouble with her serve receive. Don’t know what happened but it wasn’t good. Don’t have any stats but it was noticeable.
11. Hawaii is running a quick, up-tempo attack. It’s something they’ve worked on, using a speed advantage to beat a slower, bigger block.
Think what some are overlooking is that this is a Pro team that has has had a lot more practice time and a number of years playing together in a pro league.
As for Takeda, listed at 5-7, explosive jump, tooled the block well a la Mahina Eleneki, quick arm swing. They also ran a couple of Xs that completely hid Takeda behind her taller teammates. That might be something to consider.
12. Agree that it would be tricky to get high quality player from the top Asian countries given that they get identified for the pro system pretty early.
Ping did coach the U.S. team for a number of years. Don’t know if it would be considered ‘allowed.’ She was hired by USA volleyball. I remember meeting her first when she was the assistant at U. New Mexico. And I interview her years later during a stop in Honolulu at the Chinese Cultural Center.
I am sure that Toyota’s defense reminded Hawaii not to give up on the ball. There were a couple of times, the Wahine started celebrating only to have the ball get popped up. I thought Hawaii played fairly well defensively as well, as the gap in digs narrowed as the match went on.

Didn’t see that Hartong struggled on serve-receive however teams, not just Toyota, are targeting her in the back row. She is a primary passer. but it also makes it harder for her to set up for an attack if she takes the first ball.
I agree that almost all teams have been targeting Hartong on their serves. This was very noticeable at the Wichita State tournament. This tactic doesn’t work THAT well, because Hartong is often set even after receiving the serve and terminates. By the way it is a telling statistic that Vorster does not get enough sets to qualify for the national hitting percentage rankings. Hartong still gets too many sets and the middles too few despite Shoji’s call to change this situation.
16. yes on vorster. i was silently thinking same. not having a high velocity on her shots may be in equal
part a portion due to setting but she still manages to deliver. they’ll need her and a higher % from the second OH if they’re going far into the post season. (just an opinion).

While it is telling on Vorster stat-wise, one needs to look at Vorter’s placement in the rotation. whether she is lined up with Uiato in the front row or whether she is in the front when Uiato has to move from a back-row position. If you look at the stats over the years, you’ll see that that middles have never been set equally. And it does hurt Vorster’s numbers in that Tuaniga usually subs for her and Adolpho has been playing more sets (42 out of 43, 183 attempts), Vorster (39, 124 attempts) Tuaniga (15, 23 attempts)
Yep. I agree. Did not take into consideration the fact that Tuaniga replaces Vorster, not Adolpho when Hawaii is ahead and the bench is cleared. However, Hawaii has had teams in which the middles were primary offensive weapons. Think Victoria Prince, Amber Kaufman, Heather Bowen, Angelica Ljungquist, and many others. Uiato, however, is improving every match in effectively using the right and middle. Much better than last year, when this blog and VT were full of complaints about Uiato and her lacking in this regard (number of sets, placement, connections, etc.).

For an exhibition Wahine bench almost beat a pro team that gets paid win. That`s a pretty impressive showing.
Now the Big West conference starts. Let`s go!
Toyota’s motivation was much greater than Wahine’s, heck if they lost one sets I don’t doubt heads would roll. And for players livelihood at stake, too. But that said. Wahine hung with and even stepped up to Queenseis’ level, but couldn’t maintain that empo. Now should they encounter a US version of uptempo offense, I hope this game will give them confidence that they can step it up, too. I think it also shows what is possible with high quality reps and “never say die” (Gambatte Nei!) attitude to floor defense. Wahine have the parts, just need the will/motivation to find “it” within themselves and bring it out in those around them. Can do! And no premature celebrating allowed, play through to the whistle ending a point, a set, and a match! Creighton should have taught them that. Go Wahine!
Crazy 4 You are right. there was one particular rotation where Emily mishit 4 or 5 in a row. I just felt that she came through with some great play later in the match. P&G Niki needs to start on the right. Olevao is better on the left because she needs room to elevate to be effective. I also like Mendoza’s game a lot. I like the sub . pattern that Dave has between Niki and Sarah.
I could likely do one for HPU/Hi. Loa too.

Olevao does NOT have to be on the left; she’s “better” at either right or left. She blocks effectively on the right too boot. She can “elevate” I’ll give you also, but starting with this opening BW weekend I’d ‘mix’ things up with a 6-2.
It forces people to continue to grow (athletically/emotionally as historically, UH’s forte has ALWAYS been about good chemistry).

22. A huge factor that seems to be overseen here is that the Japan professional leagues (as well as other foreign leagues) use a totally different ball then NCAA. It is used in most international professional leagues. It is a much smaller and lighter ball and is very very difficult to pass. The Toyota team had just a few practice to get accustomed to the NCAA game balls.
I wonder how good/bad UH would’ve done against Toyota if the international ball was used during the games instead of the regular NCAA game balls.
As for Kanani, she only practice with the Toyota team a few times before playing. She was not in game shape at all. But she did well, considering.

The Wahine did not want use their ‘starters’ in Set 3 and got their other players some game time reps.
19. LB, don’t think the discussion was about UH’s MB-centric offense in the past. It was about how the two middles on the same UH team did not get equally set. and why Vorster’s numbers haven’t qualified her for inclusion in the NCAA stats.

Yes, you’re right again. After posting the #19 message, I realized that you were talking about the differences in number of sets between MB1 and MB2 in a match. Too late to change. The difference this year is especially acute since Hagins transferred out. When Hawaii is running away with a match there is only one substitution instead of a possible two, Tuaniga and Hagins in 2012. Plus when you are part of a threesome in terms of attackers in front, you have three options instead of two and more possibility of executing a slide instead of just quicks.

interesting article by ferd lewis today on the travel subsidies. so it ends up being $10,000 (or more) at $500 per person, that hawaii pays big west teams to travel here for volleyball. (that’s a rough estimate of 20 people in the travel party, but there may be more, i don’t know.)
and i didn’t realize it was that much ($150,000) of a travel subsidy for football in the mountain west. wow …
29. Maybe Kalei has decided to focus on volleyball, I think she can be an all american this season (and next) and play professionally when she graduates. That’s not the case in basketball.
37. I agree, I can see that happening and if she did (to focus) she still has a lot of upsides to be successful in pro volleyball overseas. Kalei was slowly losing playing time in basketball, and with the post recruits that Beeman brought in, she’ll probably be sitting more. I’m confident that Shoji will coach another year and Kalei will greatly benefit from that.
If, IF, Aldopho drops basketball, her scholarship will be counted against volleyball. Does Shoji have another scholarship to give?

She wasn’t earlier and people were questioning it. People need to understand that the rosters not just WBB are being updated… there are going to be mistakes and things missing.

According to VT, UCSB is ahead of Long Beach State, 2 to 1 sets. However, LBS is ahead 16-14 in the 4th set.
Want to follow the match but LiveStat is stuck and video is picture only. Since there is no announcer and no scores are shown on screen. Guess I should complain to BIG West TV someday about not having camera show scores when there are no announcers. That is why watching “free” Big West video on-line is so frustrating for all its sports, including basketball and softball.

Long Beach State vs UCSB 9 all in fifth set. A close one. Big West is going to be very competitive this season. There will be a lots of close matches and upsets. Hope not true of Hawaii but all other teams.
Big West is aware of the situation but it’s not their fault it’s the schools that have the problems with their live stats or live feeds. The Big West just connects the links to their web site and call it Big West TV.
Looks like LBS won the 5th set 15-13 over UCSB. No upset after all.
