Very interesting to see who will be recruiting for the 2014 Wahine Indoor team, since Dave Shoji mentioned on the BC Show, that he will be traveling to watch his sons play in the FIVB matches this summer. We all know that SW will be recruiting for his Sand/Beach team for 2014, so that must leave the recruiting for the indoor team to Robyn Ah Mow Santos. I have a gut feeling this will be Dave Shoji’s last year of coaching, since he and staff have not put to much emphasis on the 2014 recruiting class.

  2. Warriorfan June 6, 2013 12:33 pm

OMG shut up already, the only real big loss is Hartong( and Longo) and they have their replacements already in Greeley, Kahakai and Guinasso.

  3. vballfreak808 June 6, 2013 12:40 pm

Scott Wong is doing fine. He can recruit for both. He has a sand assistant who was already doing some recruiting in Canada last week. So we don’t need to worry.

  4. Warriorfan June 6, 2013 12:44 pm

Congrats to Rawson and the Shoji’s, really crossing my fingers for those three to make it to Rio, or Alfie although that looks like a longshot.

Any word if Enriques has committed yet?? a pin trio of Tuileta, Enriques and Siki in three years would be incredible.

Cindy – not sure you’ll want to post the link, but Tiegs has teamed with Meg Norton of UCLA to qualify for the main draw of the FIVB U23 main draw in Poland.

    1. DF, seriously, you have got to let this go about Wong. your ‘we all know that wong will be recruiting for Sand’ is just plain wrong. Do you have his travel itineraries? There is no “we” It’s just your misguided thinking.

They have 2014 recruits with oral commitments but those won’t be announced until Nov. during the early signing period.
Shoji is going to Wichita this weekend. He may go the following weekend to Oklahoma.
it’s not like he AND Wong won’t be recruiting later this summer where there are tournaments to watch. Volleyball Festival June 23-28 in Phoenix. JOs are June 28-July 5.
4 WF, the interesting thing about Enriques (no commitment yet) is that he is being looked at as a libero by USAV. I would think that would be a waste but he is a little small to be an OH at the national level.

  7. LC June 6, 2013 1:38 pm

LOL,No emphasis on 2014 recruiting ? Heck it’s almost done with dedicatedfan.

  8. vballfreak808 June 6, 2013 2:04 pm

    6. When you say, “They have 2014 recruits with oral commitments but those won’t be announced until Nov. during the early signing period.” do you mean there are others we don’t know about because they can’t announce it or there will be the ones we already know about and they will just talk about them then when they can?

  9. Cindy Luis June 6, 2013 3:35 pm

    8. it’s the ones we already know about

and, no, Shoji told me they will not be bringing anyone in to fill Croson’s scholarship.
He said they were set with plenty of firepower on the outsides.

  10. rayson June 6, 2013 4:51 pm

The UH men’s roster has been updated, at least for now. Franciskovic, Fey and Frank have been added. Wechsung, Phelps, Mitchell and Leung are gone.

  11. vballfreak808 June 6, 2013 5:34 pm

    10. I am surprised Wechsung and Phelps left. They both still had shots at starting next season. I know Leung was injured most of the season so surprised about that and I am guessing Mitchell just moved on from volleyball. The only freshman missing from that list is Keckins

  12. Warriorfan June 6, 2013 5:47 pm

That’s odd that they would update the 2014 roster already. I am guessing maybe they made some mistakes since it doesnt list Dane Keckin and it lists Iain as a sophomore instead of redshirt freshmen.

Phelps is a big loss if he did leave, I thought he would have started for sure next season. Will miss Wechsung too, ( if he did leave) I hope Jennings is ready right away he had an awesome senior high school year as an outside so he must be one of the most athletic setters UH has signed in a while.

  13. dedicatedfan June 6, 2013 5:52 pm

Cindy, the reason I am worried, about 2014, is that the Wahine will be losing 6 scholarship players at the end of 2013 season. 7 scholarship players if you count Jane Croson’s scholarship. You mentioned 3 players they have recruited for 2014. That leaves 4 scholarships still available for 2014. Really wondering who will fill those 4 remaining scholarships. With the majority of the top notch players already committed to other top programs, Is Shoji going to be giving those scholarships out to otherwise walk on players. That is what has me really worried.

  14. Warriorfan June 6, 2013 5:55 pm

13, Ugh youre annoying and you are forgetting the Canadian, they are fine. Wong has done very well recruiting.

Anyway I am a little bummed they aren’t gonna use Croson’s scholie on a new player for this year, but I blame Croson for that since she left really late. Should have left before start of second semester.

  15. dedicatedfan June 6, 2013 6:08 pm

WF, what you mention about Croson’s scholarship and maybe, leaving after the fall semester, I agree with you. If she had decided to leave after the fall semester, her scholarship could have gone to Hagins, who was not on scholarship last fall. Hagins may have stayed if given a scholarship.

  16. rayson June 6, 2013 8:39 pm

11 & 12: I was also surprised that the roster was updated especially since the Wahine roster hasn’t been. I noticed the mistakes and that Keckin want listed but I’m guessing that since he appears to be a walk-on he can’t actually be listed until he’s officially enrolled. If the roster is correct they look a little thin at the Librero position.

  17. setaone June 6, 2013 8:53 pm

    13.

Even if they lose 6 scholarship players, they don’t necessarily want to use all for incoming freshmen. Most coaching staffs don’t like to have that many in one class. They will most likely hold at least two for transfers.

  18. vballfreak808 June 6, 2013 11:14 pm

Just wondering if it is confirmed that Spieler is a sand only player that someone mentioned before?

  19. roofer68 June 7, 2013 1:35 am

    15. Hagins left for a personal reason, not for a lack of scholarship. She planned to transfer to Idaho in December after the fall semester. Why worry about nothing, after 38 years in the business Shoji’s got it all figured out about the scholarships available in 2014. He’ll give all 12 out to promised and deserving players.

  20. roofer68 June 7, 2013 1:47 am

Cindy, pls delete 19 and this post. I’ve have a problem posting, requiring to click twice to post.

  21. Ron June 7, 2013 6:14 am

Anything Roofer68 posts you can take to the bank. He knows what’s going on. Thanks R68

  22. LC June 7, 2013 6:48 am

Every time I post I get a can’t find server error yet it shows up later. The Tsai sure is a mess with all that spam everyday.

  23. Cindy Luis June 7, 2013 11:25 am

    22. LC, i get 100-400 spam every day that has to be deleted
Am surprised they’d post the roster now but it might just reflect who has enrolled in summer school. there will be more updates in fall.

  24. Cindy Luis June 7, 2013 11:26 am

    18. Not sure about Speiler. She was bothered by the leg injury in fall. Sounded like she was going to be more of a sand player anyway.

  25. Cindy Luis June 7, 2013 11:30 am

14-15: Doubt if Hagins would have gotten a scholarship if there was one.
As for Croson, yes her decision was late but they gave her that time to make the decision. Not like she had a deadline … other than the end of the semester. They wanted her to stay but she needed to do a few things in order to stay on the team. She decided to leave.
    19. They may or may not use all 12 scholarships this coming season. They’ve saved some before. I am not concerned either.

  26. Cindy Luis June 7, 2013 11:41 am

    13. i really wouldn’t worry DF.

  27. Ron June 7, 2013 1:13 pm

I have a question Cindy. Can sand players practice with the indoor team? It would seem that this would allow the indoor team to practice against some really good competition but it also might effect the court time of developing players. Do you or anyone know how this would play out? Thanks

  28. dedicatedfan June 7, 2013 2:51 pm

Cindy, can a sand player on scholarship be taken off of scholarship and given an indoor scholarship, instead, just wondering?

  29. mainlandgal June 7, 2013 3:57 pm

#18 vbfreak808: Spieler is definately Sand only going forward. She had a pretty good sand season. Excited to see her focus on one.

  30. Cindy Luis June 7, 2013 6:59 pm

Ron, the sand players could be considered walk-ons. they have been cleared by the NCAA clearing house.
Agree that it would provide some really good competition. But it would make for crowded gym with the Wahine indoor already using 3 courts at times to do individual-position specific workouts.

    28. yes, a player can be switched from one scholarship to the next but not within the same school year.
the rules regarding sand continue to change so not sure what you’re asking.
Scholarships are year-to-year and renewed annually … or not.

  31. mauna June 7, 2013 7:22 pm

Cindy, unless the NCAA has changed it’s ruling, for example if you’re on a beach scholie for the 2014 spring beach season, you cannot play indoors for the school years 2013/14 and 2014/15, two indoor seasons. So to switch to an indoor scholie from a beach you would have to wait until the school year 2015/16 to receive an indoor scholie. This two year ruling for accepting a beach scholie was in effect from the first sand season in 2012. Haven’t heard about any changes, except the sand to beach term. Maybe someone out there can enlighten us about changes for the coming season.

  32. setaone June 7, 2013 8:18 pm

Cindy, in regards to sand players practicing with the indoor team during the indoor season…….i believe sand scholarship players cannot practice with the indoor team.

  33. Cindy Luis June 7, 2013 10:41 pm

31-32. yes, to clarify, players not on sand scholarships can practice with indoor team. That’s what I was thinking of when I posted. Spieler a good example. she practiced indoor although didn’t play. she played sand but wasn’t on scholarship.
