Chance Big West Challenge not happening??

UH team came back from Hermosa today (Monday)

Hearing that there is a chance the event may not happen this week, scheduled for Friday & Saturday at Hermosa Beach.

If so, this will make for an interesting process for  the selection committee for the at-large team. Pretty much Pepperdine (13-1, lone loss to SC 4-1) and SC (17-1, lone loss to the Waves 5-0) are in.

The at-large spot should be between Hawaii and The Beach. SandBows (15-3) have a 3-2 win over the 49ers; only losses are to Pepperdine (2x 5-0) and SC (3-2).

49ers are 7-4, losses to UH 3-2, Florida State 3-2, Pepperdine 3-2 Pepperdine 4-1

Some conflicting info from the various schools who are supposed to be involved.

The Beach schedule has the 49ers playing Cal Poly, UH and CSUN at Huntington

CSUN’s schedule says they are done for the year

Cal Poly’s schedule says they are at the Irvine Valley Tournament Friday vs. Hawaii , IVC and Long Beach. then Cal Poly is in the Pac-12 Invitational Saturday in Santa Monica.

IVC schedule has the Lasers hosting the ISVC championship Saturday, nothing  on Friday.

stay tuned.

I won’t be too upset if its cancelled, that just means UH is penciled in as the third team in the west, no way they would pick Long Beach when UH beat them earlier in the season.

true but you never go when it goes to a committee to make a selection

The fact that LBSU is reigning champ with a close loss to UH, I wouldn’t be surprised if the committee goes with LBSU based on past tournament experience. That’s IF the Big West challenge is scrapped.

True it’s no a slam dunk since long beach will probably be cheaper to take BUT Long beach’s best win is 4-1 against UCLA, UH has beaten UCLA twice and 5-0 both times, and beaten Long Beach as well, just don’t think the AVCA can deny UH, and glad the NCAA is not involved.

The IVC schedule is old, from 2012-13, the ISVC Championships are April 25 this year.

    Sounds like a mess.

LBSU and UH seem to be on the same page as far as Huntington Beach tournament goes. Sounds like some bad communication between the Big West schools.

    Adding to this….

The posted IVC schedule is for last season 2013/14. The dates of matches don’t jive for this year. Example they lost to UH 4-1 on April 5th on the posted schedule but UH played Chaminade on April 5th this year.I’m not sure that there is any tournament at IVC as indicated on the Poly site ,maybe it fell through or changed.

If so Poly is actually is free to play in the Big West Challenge duals on the 18th but will pass on the pairs on the 19th to play in the duels at USC on the 19th. Poly is also not in the USC pairs on the 20th.

The answers maybe as easy as asking if you know who to contact at IVC or Poly.

Possible that the Big West Challenge will be LBSU , UH and Poly in the duels on the 18th and LBSU and UH in the pairs on the 19th.

Can we finally call out the NCAA for their excuse that it’s harder to pick Hawaii due to their location? Hawaii is an NCAA member, just like Penn St., USC, Texas, Idaho, etc. There is supposed to be a commitment to giving athletes a chance to play — this means no excusing leaving out a school due to its location.

“fair competition for student-athletes across the country”
Oh, but Hawaii has to also be better than other schools, due to location considerations.

How is the poor NCAA supposed to make money?

    7.

This decision for the at large is not made by the NCAA. Sand Vball is not an official NCAA sport yet.

    any word yet?

    6. thanks LC
    9. no
8 yes it’s an AVCA decision

  12. Andrew April 15, 2014 2:33 pm

    10.

since it’s done by AVCA and not the NCAA do the teams then pay their own way to the championships?

I say the chances of making it are higher. They’ve beaten long beach and swept ucla 2 times. It’s sad that one of these incredibly talented teams won’t make it in. Both of them deserve It.

    13. there’s money from the AVCA
    13. We’ll see what happens. They will play The Beach on Friday.
