CBU-UH rewind

Hawaii played very efficiently after making the right adjustments following Set 1.

Warriors with a 17-5 edge in blocks. Averill finished with 12 total blocks, 11 BAs, both career highs. Zarkovic 12 kills, 3 errors, Averill 11 kills, 1 error; Olsen 11 kills, 3 errors. Sedore 9-1-24. very nice night for Kanetake with 11 digs. 6 aces, 18 SEs.

Team hit .500 for Set 4, 386 for the match.

Lancers hit negative 208 in Set 4, finish with a 127. 2 aces, 14 SEs. Johannes 14 kills, Johnson with 12.

Lasted 2 hours. about 30 minutes longer than I expected.

Hawaii stays tied for fourth with Long Beach State and UCSB, both winning tonight. UCSB in 3 vs. CSUN and the Beach in 4 at UCLA.

Cindy, didn’t Komisarek start the first match (exhibition) of the season?

  2. ItsOnYou February 13, 2014 6:47 am

    1. I seem to recall the same thing.

Tho, my guess is that they’d currently sub Fey (or even Hartley) before him. I only wonder what ever happened to Phelps from last season; I thought that he’d be next in line for a ds position.

  3. Ron February 13, 2014 7:01 am

If Wade does not start giving his talented freshmen more of a chance to play he may lose them down the line to other programs where they would be utilized. Putting in Komisarek sure put a fire under Kanetake, he was digging everything! The hitters were mostly able to bail out Ramos who had a poor setting night. The officiating was very suspect. Over all, a ho hum night at the Stan.

For those of you who may have missed the write-up in this mornings paper: 😉

Hawaii turns back Cal Baptist in volleyball:
Zarkovic has 12 kills in the four-set victory

Sophomore hitter Siki Zarkovic put down 12 kills and junior middle Taylor Averill finished with 11 kills and 12 blocks as No. 11 Hawaii overcame a slow start to defeat unranked Cal Baptist 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-10 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Senior hitter Jace Olsen added 11 kills and sophomore libero Kolby Kanetake had a match-high 11 digs for the Rainbow Warriors (8-4, 6-3 MPSF) in the 2-hour contest. Junior opposite Brook Sedore added nine kills and two aces as Hawaii won its third straight.

Junior hitter Johannes Brink had a match-high 14 kills for the Lancers (3-8, 2-7) and senior middle Kristopher Johnson added 12.

The teams meet again at 7 p.m. Friday. Hawaii remained in a tie for fourth place in the MPSF, along with UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State at 6-3. Both the Gauchos and the 49ers won Wednesday night, UCSB in a home sweep of No. 13 Cal State Northridge and No. 6 Long Beach State in a four-set upset at No. 2 UCLA.

The Rainbow Warriors outblocked the Lancers 17-5. The 12 total blocks and 11 block assists were both career highs for Averill; he had eight total blocks — all block assists — in last month’s 3-2 loss at UC Santa Barbara.

    Cindy,

Have you ever met Leslie or Jack Hamann? They’re old Bruin types who now live in Seattle and are Seattle’s version of YOU.

I believe that Jack is also one of the VBM ten (on polls).

They’re friends of JMac and you know, boisterously, they are…likable??

  6. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 9:44 am

    1. sorry guess I should have said ‘official’ since the exhibition stats don’t count and aren’t part of the season stats.

  7. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 9:45 am

    5. no, haven’t had the pleasure. JMac’s wife also went to UCLA

  8. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 9:46 am

    4. that is not the write-up in today’s paper. That is my online story from last night.

  9. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 9:49 am

    3. I agree that Wade could have used a few more players for for longer but think they were taking no chances of a CBU comeback. they need the wins. And, as I’ve mentioned before, this is no women’s volleyball with all the subs. Men have six, with one re-entry, per set.

  10. Tryouts February 13, 2014 2:05 pm

There are so many of those Bruins, everywhere. 😉
The wife must’ve transferred to Notre Dame (to play tennis).

Wasn’t Leslie Hamann on the VB team??

Jack is ALL Wa. Huskies..don’t know where Leslie’s loyalties lie.

  11. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 2:10 pm

Perhaps I misunderstood your Jmac reference. I was referring to John McNamara’s wife.
As for Leslie H. don’t know. I’m sure you could find it in the media guide at uclabruins.com.

  12. ItsOnYou February 13, 2014 2:37 pm

Where as Karlee Riggs-Ali Longo were Flight#3 last season with UH SVB,
I’ll put them at either #4 or #5 this 2014.

What happened to the multi-talented Ashley Johnson (UH’s 1st NLI signer two years ago outta San Diego)? Where is she now??? With a medical hardship can a SVB player be afforded the same opportunities as any other six-seasons-long athlete?

    Hannah Rooks ‘took’ her #35!!!

  13. Tryouts February 13, 2014 2:56 pm

    Looks like 5.10’s JR B. Tiegs-SR K. Cook end up being Team#1

  14. Tryouts February 13, 2014 3:02 pm

The team can do imo w/out Ashley Kastl but Johnson, Hartong, and Kelsi Delgado are blows to the team (with none playing).

  15. ItsOnYou February 13, 2014 3:16 pm

Cindy, please, UW and their two team schedule this season is like caca. Their “trees” remain unproven themselves on the sand; yes they’ve got some potent indoor athletes but the sand game is very different, yet so much the same. The arse talkin again.

Tiegs is listed at 5’9 and Cook is listed at 5’11.

Who do others think are starters out of the 17 girls listed on the roster?

  16. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 3:29 pm

    11. don’t know. I”m scheduled to chat with the team next week

  17. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 3:32 pm

    14. please what? no idea what you’se talking about regarding UW, a team I’ve never mentioned.

  18. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 3:35 pm

Don’t believe that the teams are final. They’re still practicing. sometimes on campus, sometimes at Queen’s. since UH only has 2 courts at the moment and they need 4 for tournaments, they’re down at Queen’s

  19. Tryouts February 13, 2014 3:50 pm

I wonder why it is that you refuse to give me any ground on this blog. People can lay into me, yet when it comes to any type of witty retort on my behalf, well…

  20. Cindy Luis February 13, 2014 6:32 pm

    19. don’t know what you mean. haven’t your posts been posted?

  21. TryOUTs February 13, 2014 6:46 pm

    Got It.

  22. ItsOnYou February 13, 2014 7:37 pm

anyway, the thunder comes from the athletes and those who are able:
2013 Natl SVB Champions LBSU, which included pairs C.Ledoux-T.Roenicke

  23. setaone February 14, 2014 7:24 am

I’m curious how Nikki Taylor is going to be on the sand. She has a good all around game for a big girl. Hopefully some sand time will increase her level of play (the indoor team will need it).

  24. Brandon February 14, 2014 9:29 am

I swear tryouts and itsonyou are the same person. I’m sorry if I sound rude but I can NEVER understand what they are trying to say.

  25. Cindy Luis February 14, 2014 9:51 am

    24. yes to your suspicions.

  26. Cindy Luis February 14, 2014 9:54 am

14 as for Hartong not playing sand, she is concentrating on indoor game and graduating this spring.

  27. Brandon February 14, 2014 9:57 am

Any update on hartong with the training with the national team? I know she was invited.

  28. Cindy Luis February 14, 2014 10:10 am

    27. no. Winter training block started Jan. 27. 8 weeks long in Anaheim. Not sure how many weeks she had planned on attending due to classes.

  29. Turfwar February 14, 2014 10:48 am

Hartong was at the men’s game on Wednesday. Did she commit to the National team or is she planning to play overseas?

  30. ClawsBeatSkin February 14, 2014 11:18 am

    ^
I do wish we would require email registration for the blogs.

Cindy has already said she’s not about IP addresses, so just forget about Tryouts, TRYouts, TryOUTs.

  31. Cindy Luis February 14, 2014 4:10 pm

If I see her tonight at VB I”ll ask.
She was on the training roster announced last month which also said the players still in school would be training part-tie during the eight weeks.

  32. ItsOnYou February 15, 2014 1:51 pm

You may want to shut off your FB page; major “ammo” can be used through its contents.
You and I share MULTIPLE friends (-of friends). 😉

  33. Cindy Luis February 15, 2014 2:01 pm

are you discussing my FB page?

  34. ItsOnYou February 15, 2014 2:07 pm

Why would you set your celebrity self up for teaming with the bad guys?

  35. Tryouts February 15, 2014 2:08 pm

Why would you set your celebrity self up for teaming with the bad guys?

  36. Cindy Luis February 15, 2014 2:11 pm

    I am not a celebrity.

  37. Tryouts February 15, 2014 2:16 pm

You aren’t one to isolate yourself from the locals are you??

Does segregation exist in Honolulu? Could it possibly?

Some one said that celebrities are attractive, intelligent (supposedly) and of general good report. They certainly can enjoy the niceties which Kailua provides.

  38. Cindy Luis February 15, 2014 2:22 pm

lucky to have bought in Kailua at a time when it was affordable almost 30 years ago. not my fault it got ‘trendy.’

  39. Cindy Luis February 15, 2014 2:24 pm

The one thing I am is tolerant when people decide to have conversations with themselves using different usernames and (usually) fake emails. The IP never changes.

  40. Cindy Luis February 15, 2014 2:26 pm

    36. BTW, the term is “of good rapport.”

  41. Tryouts February 15, 2014 2:30 pm

NOT that I’d think you’d have me for a visit but I’d want to be welcomed into your home some time. It sounds creepy, I get it, but I do love that windward side of the island.

I’m not certain IF you’er on the beach, but I used to spend quite a bit of time on Kailua Beach.
I friend (of a friend) was caretaker for a most opulent set of digs which opened up to the beach via back door/yard. There was a pool but the salt water is better imo. The home belonged to a rich Japanese businessman–a number of prosperous bowling alleys I believe. The man would NEVER make it out to Hi. The mansion just sat there, empty, with 12+ rooms for the misuse. 😉

  42. Tryouts February 15, 2014 2:32 pm

    39. Mahalo. Different references, however.

  43. Tryouts February 15, 2014 2:47 pm

    k. out.
