And we’re back up now Cindy!

  2. Lina August 28, 2013 9:18 pm

Cindy, just saw the Leahey and Leahey interview with Shoji tonight. He is very high on Nikki Taylor and Taylor Higgins (rare praise for typical Freshman), as well as Kalei Adolpho.

Has Adolpho really made as big of an improvement from last year?

  3. mauna August 28, 2013 10:03 pm

    2. Also was asked about retirement, said he’s waiting on Jim Leahey. When he does than he may. Leahey mentioned that he wasn’t ready to. So that means that we’ll see him calling the matches starting on Friday.
Was that a slip of the tongue by Shoji? On the 6:00 news was asked about Hartong’s last season and he says yes, he’ll miss her next year. Do we see a year by year contract in the making?

  4. mauna August 28, 2013 10:05 pm

Good job Scott, worked on the first click.

  5. Hot August 28, 2013 10:08 pm

Maybe he’ll miss her next year because this is her last season.

  6. po'okela August 28, 2013 10:17 pm

    lol

  7. mauna August 28, 2013 10:23 pm

    5. I thought that’s what I said in the second to last sentence that I posted. Also the meaning I get from “he’ll miss her next year” is that he’ll be around next Fall.

We should expect a boost in attendance this weekend. Thanks to the four local girls on the visiting teams.

C’era Oliveira, San Diego (Hawaii Baptist Academy)
    Kat Brooks, Texas (Punahou)
    Malia Patterson, Texas-El Paso (Punahou)
Sarah Palmer, Texas (Hawaii Baptist Academy)

Yes, mauna. I think Dave might be around next fall.

  10. Grammy August 29, 2013 6:08 am

Heard Coach Dave, too, and had same thought regarding ‘next year’. Here’s hoping…. But for now, “Let’s get this season started right and show our aloha for Seniors.” Hope to see big crowd to welcome, Texas and send message to NU that we will get our numbers again and be right there with them. Go Wahine!s

  11. Grammy August 29, 2013 6:10 am

Wow. great fix! Worked fine and quickly! Mahalo for this blog and caring and sharing. Go Wahine!

  12. LC August 29, 2013 6:46 am

There is a special coming on KMBG about Shoji on Sept 5th called The Man Behind The Miracles

Yes,Dave is returning in 2014 but he’s playing the same game as he is with the schedule called …I Don’t Know Yet when he actually does know.

Yes, unfortunately Jim is doing Wahine VB this year…Television: OCSports – Channels 16 (SD) and 1016 (HD) will be broadcasting all UH matches with Jim Leahey calling the play-by-play and Chris McLachlin doing color commentary.

  13. Ron August 29, 2013 7:06 am

Leahey is the worst. His “now they say it was out!” with regard to his missing the play is uttered at least five times a game. I am glad I will be at the arena and wont have to cringe every time he misses a call. I also thought that after listening to Dave that maybe they decided to play Texas first so they wouldn’t be scouted prior to their match. Thanks LC re the special.

    12. This is what Shoji told me yesterday about his retirement ‘plans’. That he doesn’t want any discussion of it this year so that it isn’t a distraction for the season. He wants the focus to be on the team and the play on the court.
He said if he wants to retire at the end of this season, he will. If continues to be as enjoyable as he does at the moment, he’ll stay.
So NO LC he doesn’t know yet. He isn’t playing a game.

As I’ve mentioned before, he has begun to work on the 2014 schedule, which he does every year since it takes a while to schedule 3 good teams per tournament. My thought has always been he’d stay at least for 2014, which makes it 40 years.

    2. Lina sorry that I missed Leahey’s show. But it sounds like he didn’t say anything that we haven’t posted here and been in the paper the past few weeks.
if you’ve been reading the recaps I’ve had, yes, Adolpho has made tremendous strides in become a volleyball player instead of someone very athletic with volleyball skills being out on the court. You’ll see how improved her footwork is, how they are able to use her on slides with quicker sets. she’s getting to the outside much quicker and she’s also connecting on the ‘quick sets’ in the middle with greater efficiency. That is a timing issues and takes time to get the timing. She and Uiato have worked hard on that.
And the freshmen fit right in. He has said that Taylor is on the verge of being ready to play in her first DI match and Higgins is what he hoped she would be at this level.

  16. Cindy Luis August 29, 2013 7:53 am

    13. Ron, don’t think Shoji scheduled Texas first so they wouldn’t be scouted. It was more of how the schedule played out. He didn’t want two ‘tough matches’ back to back. That would be Texas and San Diego. Since Texas couldn’t stick around for Sunday, that meant Friday was the day. He is concerned very much about USD and knows that UTEP in the middle of the 2 was the way to go.

As for Leahey … he isn’t watching the action on the court, he is watching the TV monitor so he doesn’t see what the up ref has signaled Leahey is making his own call off what he sees on the monitor then the ‘now they say…’ Sometimes it is because they have changed the call (we know had bad the linesmen can be) but more often than not he is catching up what with what the ref initially called.

  17. LC August 29, 2013 8:06 am

Like I said before I’m always right while others are gullible.

  18. setaone August 29, 2013 8:12 am

Based on not seeing the team at all since Spring, I think the lineup will be:

    S – Uiato
    L – Longo
    OH – Hartong
    OH – Kastl
    RS – Manu-Olevao
    MB – Adolpho
    MB – Tuaniga/Vorster (still undecided)

Manu-Olevao will start, that is not in question. It was always which side? With her on the right side, Kastl can play her natural left side. Manu-Olevao is a more complete player than Goodman.

Middles….I think Shoji will go with the quicker Tuaniga. She provides more consistent offense than Vorster, although Vorster has a “bigger” block.

Of course I’m just an arm chair QB, so will be fun to see who the 7 are on Friday.

    Go Wahine!

  19. Grammy August 29, 2013 8:17 am

In the arena, you don’t have to watch all the commercials or listen to Jim L. plus you get the atmosphere. But you have to deal with some lame songs and flying t-shirts, ha ha ha. Oh yeah and some old lady yelling herself horse, too. But more fun. Also then you can go home and watch the replay with sound off and zip through commercials. Love you, Cindy and this site is first thing I check for when I rise because its right on with what’s on my mind so often and mostly readable and thought provoking, too. Go Wahine!

  20. Cindy Luis August 29, 2013 8:33 am

And just when I thought you had begun to behave, LC. definitely gullible on that.
Very tired of you continuing to imply that Shoji isn’t being truthful and that I, in turn, am lying in what I write.

  21. LC August 29, 2013 8:47 am

LOL what a drama queen no one is accusing you of lying ,you’re just gullible.

  22. Cindy Luis August 29, 2013 8:58 am

    22. Gullible yes. Drama queen, no.
You have continued to post that only fools would believe certain things, which have included what Shoji has told us about the lineup and his retirement. That means that he isn’t being truthful. which in turn means I’m not being truthful when passing along the info. Not being truthful is lying in my book.
