And so it begins. Practice starts

will update with what’s going on. but I will not be doing photos or video. Make get something from booster club prez Stanley Ching.

nothing much happening yet. they were here at 8 a.m., chatted, went into the locker room. There are cones out for agility drills. Didn’t see the supposed new addition we mentioned yesterday but it’s too early to count.

It could be possible that the new addition mentioned is a sand player, many times club announcements don’t differentiate.

  2. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 8:31 am

So only 18 this morning working out. If Candido, the libero mentioned yesterday is supposed to come, she isn’t here. My thought is she is a fall 2013 commit, for 2014.
or LC you could be right about sand.

  3. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 8:43 am

Players breaking into small groups, mostly 2s but some 3s (setters Uiato, Higgins, Goodman). everyone looking pretty healthy, no serious braces, couple of active ankles. Goodman’s sister looks just like her. Hartong’s pepper partner is Nikki Taylor

  4. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 9:08 am

Water break. and if you come early before matches, this is kind of the next drill. tossing balls over the net and passing. Ah Mow-Santos working with the setters, Wong working with the middles. And the liberos and hitters passing. Shoji on the sidelines, watching technique and passing platforms.

  5. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 9:19 am

Pretty funny. Shoji says to those of us on the sidelines … You know it’s not going to get any more exciting than this. Media here … Ann, Kaleo reporter, Rob DeMello, me, cameraman from some station.
But there is mention of a radar gun to measure serves, what the speed should be of a jump float and a spin.
    6 on each court.
Wong is specifically working with Nikki Taylor on her toss. She is tall, almost as tall as Wong.

I agree with Dave practices are pretty boring to watch..

  7. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 10:17 am

Cindy, I would like to know who has been practicing on the Right Side the most. The one weak spot, for the Wahine’s. Not to concerned about the LS, or Middle, those positions will sort itself out. The BIG QUESTION this fall practice, finding a solid RS player.

  8. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 10:18 am

    7. no right side practice drills yet. they aren’t doing 6-on-6

  9. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 10:24 am

Cindy, thank you. But can you keep that question in mind throughout the Fall practices. That is the ONE position of concern, throughout Fall practices. Who will step up and take over that RS position. Thank you.

  10. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 10:24 am

    dang last post didn’t take.
each setter working with 3 hitters setting left and hitting line. this is perhaps noteworthy. Uiato’s hitters are Hartong, Manu-Olevao and Taylor. Higgins has Goodman, Kastl and Long.
But that was just to start. Goodman now setting Olevao, Kastl and Taylor while Hartong tosses to Goodman.

  11. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 10:29 am

    9. yes it is a concern and that is a question. But it won’t be answered today. this is about getting back into practice mode. I’m sure they’ll do some right side drills.
But if things are like they were last year, Lefts hit twice on the left, once on the right. Right hits twice on the right, once on the left.
Don’t think Tuaniga is moving from middle, as someone suggested a few weeks ago. She, Vorster and Adolpho are the 3 MBs.

  12. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 10:29 am

Looking like they may break early. was supposed to go to 1130 but may be 11.
    They’ll be back at 3.
Not much to analyze, sorry. pretty basic drills. Now doing a little blocking.

  13. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 11:00 am

1115 and they’re stretching. they did a little 6-on-6 scrimmaging with Shoji calling what kind of set he wanted occasionally, like pipe to Long. Adolpho looked very quick to the outside on a couple of stepouts. Very spirited defense.

  14. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 11:11 am

Shoji said he was pretty happy with the first session, that it went quick. Did some teaching along with the reps.

  15. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 11:12 am

    11. I know the RS will not be resolved today, just asking if you can keep us informed on the RS situation, throughout all the fall practices.

You mentioned that Adolpho looks very quick to the outside, a lot quicker then she was last year?

When they did a little 6-on-6 scrimmaging, who played the RS?

  16. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 11:15 am

Hartong dropped by. Said she’s feeling good, healthy. Thinks the new players will bring a lot and glad there are only 4 of them since the team has kind of an identity already. Thought that Passi will contribute and that the Goodmans are hard to tell apart. Kaela will be playing as a grad student. she has graduated and working on her masters in English.
team back at 330. I’ll be back too.

  17. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 11:22 am

Cindy, if it is hard to tell the Goodmans apart, it will spell bad news for Leahey, and his eye sight, and play calling.

  18. vballfreak808 August 10, 2013 11:35 am

How are all the new players doing? Thanks for the reports Cindy

  19. Cubicle1126 August 10, 2013 12:40 pm

getting excited for a new season again 🙂 looking forward to more updates! thanks, cindy … (and i’m late to the ballgame, but welcome back as well)

  20. setaone August 10, 2013 1:52 pm

Most likely Kyra Goodman will redshirt. So Leahey probably will not need to be telling them apart as only Kaela will see court time.

  21. LC August 10, 2013 2:01 pm

1)I just noticed that UC Davis,UCSB and CS Fullerton have yet to even mention the Big West Coaches Poll on their web sites, sour grapes maybe ?

    2) I have no problem telling the Goodman girls apart.

  22. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 4:18 pm

21 Doubt it’s sour grapes as much as it is the SID office not working yet. 2 of the 3 schools don’t have football. and the UC schools start later.
and since they play different positions, doubt if there would be a problem. But even Hartong said from the back she sometimes doesn’t know who’s who. And she’s known both for a long time.

  23. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 4:18 pm

20 Kyra likely will redshirt. They don’t need 3 active setters.

  24. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 4:20 pm

don’t know if Leahey will be doing the broadcasts this year. Have heard he might step down. I know that McLachlin will be back. He was here briefly this morning.

  25. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 4:24 pm

    15. sorry don’t remember who was RS during the very brief scrimmaging. There was a lot of rotations going in and out. As for Adolpho, just noticed she looked quick to the outside. She did it twice. it seemed quicker than last year.

  26. Dedicatedfan August 10, 2013 4:27 pm

Cindy, is Kevin Wong available, McLachlin can do play-by-play and Kevin can do color, would like to see that team.

  27. mauna August 10, 2013 4:42 pm

Jim Leahey has had a good run doing Wahine volleyball. Enjoyed his invented words not in Webster, but volleyball, even the slower women version was moving too fast for him. Kevin would be good but he may be involved with calling matches on the mainland. I recall Dash filling in for Jim Leahey when he was at another function in his honor. If it does happen, “Happy Trails To You” papa Leahey, “until we meet again”.

  28. Cindy Luis August 10, 2013 5:48 pm

    26. KW might be available and he obviously has the background. Not pushing Leahey out the door yet. And not sure what kind of broadcast team OC16 will have this year.
