Adolpho, scholarships, etc

the scholarship question comes up every year. Never been one who cares who is on scholarship and who isn’t, but for inquiring minds.

Adolpho is on volleyball scholarship this season, with the understanding she’ll be back to basketball for 2015-16.

Story for tomorrow will discuss what she plans to do for spring since she can’t partipate with the basketball team. Sand may be in her future.

someone asked earlier about Gianna Guinasso, who was announced as part of Wong’s 2015 recruiting class. She is not on sand scholarship. She is a walk-on for both indoor and sand. Haven’t asked but she might have gotten an academic scholarship.

Guinasso was a high school teammate of freshman setter Kendra Koelsch. She won gold medals in the AAU Best of the Beach and the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships. She also medaled in the AAU Pan Pacific Championships and the AAU Junior California Open (regional) and was selected to represent the U.S. in the International Children’s Games (ICG).

Cindy, I know you do not care about who is on scholarship, or not, but I just want to know, how many scholarships can be given out each year, please?

Speaking of Guinasso, do you think she’ll play a lot this year? Obviously the third DS spot will be between her and Anderson. And Ponce too.

I’m glad she’ll just redshirt and instead of us basketball fans wondering why she’s off the basketball team. Maybe that’s why basketball was able to get the transfer from USC, she probably got Kalei’s schollie. So make me think this is good thing all around for both teams.

The bball/vball combo is just really difficult to accomplish for 4 years. If only there were just a short breather between the seasons. It’s not too bad when it’s a player finishes 4 years of volleyball, and just wants to use up a 5th year of eligibility to play bball (as a couple other volleyball players have done). But to do it 4 years is tough. The player’s development in each sport will get short changed.

Nice to see that Adolpho will have the chance to concentrate on one sport, and then the other, with some breathing room in between.

    3. It seems like Guinasso is No. 3 behind Mendoza & Kahakai (not ranking those two yet). Her ball control is really good, as you would expect with all the sand experience she has.
    4. yep, it’s why they had that late scholarship available.
