Wahine playing well tonight after a slow start.

  3. 808wahine September 1, 2017 8:03 pm

Wahine take the second set 25-15

  4. greenthumb September 1, 2017 8:09 pm

Team members looking increasingly more comfortable playing together.

  5. Maverick September 1, 2017 8:10 pm

Stat of the match so far: UH has 1 hitting error…total thru 2 sets
although SD is more of a digging team vs blocking team, per the spectrum halftime folks

So, second stat of the match: Maglio hitting 10-0-12 for .833

Third stat (or the “coming back to earth” award): Sky Williams hitting 1-1-10 for .000

  6. greenthumb September 1, 2017 8:45 pm

Looks like the jitters have been working their way out. How about the added motivation of the team’s deal with Coach — that a 3-0 weekend will have her wearing heels and a dress to the next outing.

  7. islandman September 1, 2017 9:25 pm

Howling looked good. She looks like one of those players we often see on opposing teams that are dangerous.

  8. Ron September 1, 2017 9:34 pm

I really liked that so many Wahine got into the game. Howling is going to be really good. In my opinion , the best line-up would be: Setter Isoia
    Left #1 Castillo
Left#2 Granado subbed out by Greeley in back row
    Right Maglio
    Middles Williams and Howling
    Libero Kanakai or Andersen

  9. Chicken Grease September 1, 2017 10:14 pm

    Things aee looking up . . .

  10. Maverick September 1, 2017 10:17 pm

True barometer is Utah on Sunday. UH just beat two cupcakes, so it is difficult to conclude anything.

  11. vballfan September 1, 2017 10:19 pm

Thank you turfwar (#23, 8/29/17) RE KHON piece on Robyn. Yesterday afternoon, spoke to Rob DeMello. He said there may be a licensing issue that would prevent a rerun of the piece. If things get cleared up, a replay is possible sometime “this weekend.”

  12. rabbit ears September 2, 2017 12:00 am

Wish Maglio would play six rotations. Kind of a waste right now playing 1/2 games. Kind of a tough decision because you want Kendra, Anderson, baby G and Kalei to play. They all earned and deserve play time. Howling may be better than Williams at this point. Not surprised they are sharing the position right now.

  13. Hot September 2, 2017 12:12 am

TBH, Maglio on the right was kind of a bust. This is the lineup that brought UCLA to 5 and won the past two games.

    IMO:
    S – Iosia
OPP – Koelsch (Anderson or Guinasso back row)
OH – Granato (Sibley sub), Castillo (Greeley DS)
MB – Maglio (Guinasso DS), Williams (or Howling)
    L – Kahakai or Anderson

  14. FitTrainer September 2, 2017 4:08 am

Maglio on the right was not a bust. We have to remember she only played 2 sets there the first time (ever) the first night and we all thought she was amazing. The second night they were keying on her and the sets and connection also weren’t there. She only played a set and a half. The other players have all had experience playing there. She needs reps to get her rhythm.

She is the most consistent hitter and As the season progresses it would be nice if she wasn’t on the bench half the time (or more). She was off for long stretches in a few of the matches when the Team couldn’t side out. Also she lost a cciuole rotations when they went Williams to Howling (in two matches), and still was very effective.

  15. ignaciosaid September 2, 2017 5:46 am

Wahine looking good—–Kendra and Casey hitting with more authority , McKenna G just needs to stay focused , because of injuries I believe Kalei is playing tentatively (but I hope she’s getting healthy)! Sophia is the real deal and should be as good / better than Mags. Am waiting to see Shaney (who could be , with Sophia , heir apparent to Taylor) and Janelle (who I think could step in for Savannah–if both don’t redshirt). The coaching staff is young and energetic and by the way–THANK YOU to the SHOJI OHANA!!!! GOOOO BOWS

  16. Hot September 2, 2017 6:10 am

    14. Her hitting percentage dipped by over a hundred points when she was playing right side. I think the reason she might be so effective could exactly be because she plays limited rotations and doesn’t get the majority of swings. IMO, getting a lot of sets kind of wore her down and she wasn’t as effective. I do think she is best as a middle blocker and that’s where she’ll be able to shine more.

I’m not sure what Howling replacing Williams had to do with Maglio losing a couple of rotations. Williams’ rotations have nothing to do with Maglio’s.

  17. ballerz September 2, 2017 6:32 am

awe some match. saw some warrior football player attendance giving some love. great back to back programs on the rise. we need that guest singer at tonight’s pregame ceremony. its great to be a fan. go bows!

  18. FitTrainer September 2, 2017 6:49 am

Players need a chance to develop when they are new to a position. A couple of sets in a new position is hardly enough time to assume she is a bust on the outside. Put for example Granato or even Koelsch in the middle, likely their hitting percentage would drop (at first?).

Players like Granato, Tai and even Nicki were given lots of time (and hitting errors, low percentages etc.) before they became really proficient. How many night did these players have low hitting percentages, but we didn’t give up on them (well some maybe did), but they all improved and had some fantastic games.

The point on the rotation was just that Mags was off for a few long stretches but still was the top hitter last evening. If given the chance to be on the court more (yeah and her numbers may drop initiatially( most players’ percentages do drop the more swings they get) she has the potential to get huge numbers too.

  19. menehune September 2, 2017 7:23 am

Howling is the real deal…mobile and quick and hits the ball hard. With more playing time, she’ll develop in the mold of Magill.

So Robyn has a problem, but a good one. And that is, with the return of Burns, who’s the other Middle going to be? Right now, I’d say it’s a toss-up between Williams, Burns and Howling.

The Wahine should beat the Utes if they continue to play with the same intensity and passion they displayed in their last three matches. All phases of their game are finally coming to the fore, especially their blocking, their key defensive mechanism.

  20. islandman September 2, 2017 8:28 am

Utah setter Bailey Choy’s sports hero is Robyn Ah Mow -Santos, per roster bio.

  21. warriorwahine September 2, 2017 10:24 am

not bad wahine. but need to do a (whole lot) better with the receiving. at least 4 being aced! there should no reason for any of that against a lesser team.

utah didnt look that impressive and was goofing off on the second set but thats not to say adora anae does not have that weapon

  22. Warriorfan September 2, 2017 11:25 am

That’s what happens when you move to the pins yor percentage drops.
The last two opponents have put no pressure behind the service line so Maglio has been getting nice sets in the middle but when the wahine face a top tier team like ucla who serves toough the wahine will need a big bail out hitter at the pins and I’d rather that be Maglio than Granato or Koelsch.
I want both freshmen middles to start they will only improve by playing all season and i’d hate to see one wastes on the bench all season,
Love kendra but she’s better off as a sparkplug off the bench.

  23. Warriorfan September 2, 2017 11:30 am

Im a 5 setter i’d take Mags taking 40-50 plus swings and hitting between .250-280 anyday over just getting half that many sets in the middle.
The freshmen are proving to be good enough blockers.

  24. Ron September 2, 2017 12:54 pm

#10 (Maverick) So true! I think that we all would like to see Emily get more swings. Also agree with WF’s other comments. Sometimes I just wish that Granato would graduate just so I wouldn’t have to go through the agony of wondering which player will show up and I don’t mean game to game but from play to play. I do love her arm strength but sometimes she looks like she has never seen a volleyball court before and at other times she plays like an All-American. To confusing.

  25. rabbit ears September 2, 2017 1:09 pm

#23 Wow. Surprised by your comment about Granato. You are normally a very positive blogger.

  26. David Yamakawa September 2, 2017 2:12 pm

Have anyone noticed, so far the Wahines are not playing down to the opponents level like in past years. Maybe with Robyn standing right there near the sideline keep the players from slacking.

  27. Ron September 2, 2017 2:15 pm

Thanks RE, I try to be positive but the vast swings in Granato’s quality of play drives me over the edge because of the potential I think she has. That being said, there is a lot to love about this years team. Castillo has really stepped up and when she learns to concentrate on every play, she will be a “star”. The two freshmen middles after a year or so in the weight room will be All-American material. Iosia is literally the best and is getting better. And Emily is so steady. I also think that Robyn is growing in leaps and bounds. Over all, I’m a happy fan.

  28. shar September 2, 2017 3:11 pm

I am a happy fan also. There is bound to be growing pains and I like the way things are addressed in a timely manner and that issues are not allowed to fester. The coaches actively coaching on the court continue to impress me also.

I love Dave and he left an inspired legacy and I think the team and coaches are a testament to this.

  29. noblesol September 2, 2017 4:02 pm

UCSB is losing to Utah State, down 0-1 and behind in the second set. If they lose, they’ll be 0 for 6. Ruddins has been out since last Saturday’s match when she had 83 attacks vs. Florida State, she’s missed four matches now. I don’t think Chanel Hoffman has played a set yet. Not looking good for the Gauchos.

  30. noblesol September 2, 2017 4:22 pm

Long Beach is 1 for 5. They lost their Alumni match, and it’s been uphill from there. Murray has been injured, don’t think she has played a set. The transfers and freshman don’t appear to have caught fire. The senior setter transfer was benched for a freshman setter last match. Megan Kruidhof appears to be the go to hitter with the most total attacks, hitting .215. As a team, they are hitting .176. Not looking good for Long Beach.

  31. todde September 2, 2017 5:04 pm

Has anyone noticed that the wahines are not playing down to the competition compared to prior years teams.

  32. FitTrainer September 2, 2017 6:01 pm

CalPoly handed first loss of season by Washington. They looked good with Torrey and Adlee getting most of the sets (and a few to Greisen).

Hawaii might match up well with them based on what I saw from the UW game. They had trouble with tough serving and hard swings (Granato should be able to power through their block or power with high hands off block). They also had trouble with Washington’s block.

Their Libero did a nice job and while Taylor Nelson did a nice job, sets were predictable to T.Van Winden and not a lot of sets to the middle (sounds like IH at times).

Washington scored on a number of back row attacks from various positions. CalPoly had a lot of over passes and could handle the short float serves.

If UH blocks well, hits hard, and serves tough. They will do okay. They will need to balance the offense and use the middle (more than CalPoly did).

  33. noblesol September 2, 2017 6:09 pm

Cal Poly loses to UW in three. Cal Poly is now 5 and 1. UW without Crissy Jones, out with injury, but that didn’t slow them much. The second set was competitive with three match points. Overall though, Cal Poly didn’t have enough block and middle presence, and UW did. UW had tougher serving and better serve receive. TVW is the real deal, but we knew that. About 2/3 of the Cal Poly attacks came from the VW sisters. Cal Poly was doing a lot of scrambling, UW frequently had them out of system. Cal Poly looked a little tired, it was their second match of the day.

  34. FitTrainer September 2, 2017 6:17 pm

    30. That was had trouble with the short float serve.

    31. Agree with all especially that UW got CP out of system a lot.

  35. noblesol September 2, 2017 6:18 pm

FitTrainer. Didn’t see your post, must of went up while I was writing. I think we saw the same match the same way. Still too early to say how the BW teams will stack up come conference time, although it looks like Cal Poly and Hawaii will slug it out at the top, Long Beach and UCSB are struggling. UCI, UC Davis and CSUN are having a nice non-conference season against middle tier teams, but those wins count.

  36. FitTrainer September 2, 2017 6:35 pm

Noblesol. I think we did post at almost the exact same time! Agree with your assessment!

  37. Bleachercoach September 2, 2017 11:09 pm

I agee that Emily Maglio should be in a 6 player rotaton always. She can dig cause she plays Beach with only 2 players on court and she is the only returning All-American from last year. If I had to choose the player that is my “Consistent” terminator and play backrow it would be her ( go figure. ) I think she should have more kill attempts than MG due to her efficiency. Just thinking out loud!

  38. menehune September 3, 2017 3:10 am

What drives me nuts is the number of dinks by the Wahine opponents falling to the floor.

  39. Pot of Gold September 3, 2017 6:01 am

The problem with rotating Mags through the lineup really comes down to reps. Ideally she would take a pin position and so far Robyn hasn’t afforded her enough reps at either position to let her get comfortable. However with the emergence of the freshman muddles and Burns available, Robyn should focus on using Mags on either side (I like power, as that is where bad passes end up), especially against weaker opponents initially.

Somewhere down the road this will pay dividends when the Whine play contenders. Don’t get me wrong, Mags has to earn that 6 rotation spot and she has yet to do so. It just seems to be an option to play teams with a better outside block. Mags will also have to prove herself in the back row defensively and as a backhoe hitter. This may be the hold on moving forward with the 6 rotations from the coaching perspective right now.

Having Mags and Castillo playing power is a nice option to have.

  40. ballerz September 3, 2017 7:23 am

yes to dinks input…its nice when we deliver but not as the receiver. its gonna get better than worse. team is communicating well. the team was introduced at aloha stadium first quarter but did not see them on the sideline. so we should be ready for todays match at ssc. lets go bows! congrats to coach rolo.

  41. FitTrainer September 3, 2017 8:40 am

Everyone has to “earn” their spot to play anywhere on the floor to some extent. A lot of our players need to grow and develop in their positions this year.

The coaching staff have discussed playing Maglio through six rotations. They mentioned familiarity to the rest of the team and what they thought the team was comfortable with. They opted for
familiarity in the first few matches and ultimately against UCLA.

It’s the willingness of the coaching staff to try her out in a variety of roles and whether or not that will pay dividends down the road. There are lots of moving parts to the puzzle and the strength of the middle players definitely play a factor on whether or not they can move her.

The emergence of the freshman middles may allow a chance to develop Maglio further (beyond what they are already seeing in practice) for multiple rotations.

With any changes there are risks. Will the middle be okay with her movement? Will the benefits outweigh the risks long term? UH has taken risks on developing Nicki Taylor playing all around and on Granato playing in the back row (and is still developing there) and those risks I think paid off. I personally like the “risk”.

I like the idea of giving her development because it will hopefully pay off as we face bigger and better teams (and hopefully in our tournament run). Potentially we add more diversity to the offense, some back row attacks and give one of the best (and I think she is earning that), most consistent hitters more time on the floor. I thing there is a higher ceiling for this team if we take some early “risk” and really go for it.

I also like giving Castillo more reps on either left or right as she also has a higher ceiling than some of the other outside hitters.

Lots of teams especially in the Big conferences take the risk with developing some of their big (tall), good players. They may go through some growing pains early but they get the reps in there to become effective. it often pays off come their post season runs. “Low floor, high ceiling”. Just my opinion.

  42. Fit Trainer September 3, 2017 8:56 am

Also, Annie Mitchem is a great example of a “risk” paying off. Dave was reluctant to move her at first (and even said this in an interview). At first she had some early games where she had only a few kills, but after she got more comfortable there “BOOM”, there was our tournament team! Mitchem on the outside took pressure off both Nicki and Granato and gave a more diversity to the offence. In some ways it would have been nice to move her sooner!

I think it is extremely funny that some of you think you can coach better than a three time olympian. Think she knows what she’s doing…your opinions are cute though.

  45. mauna September 5, 2017 3:01 pm

On the AVCA coaches poll. IMO Prepvolleyball.com has it more correctly ranked. 9 UCLA, 14 Utah, 15 BYU, 22 San Diego, 24 Hawaii, 35 Cal Poly.
