I pick Stanford to win behind Plummer, but maybe Fitzmorris will need a larger role.

I think Wisconsin is a more complete team, but we’ll see.

Congratulations to McKenna Ross for graduating today. She’s graduating a semester ahead of the usual time ? Also fb’s Nate Ilaoa got his degree today.
It’s tough to be on the athletic teams and a student at the same time.

    Congrats to Nate Ilaoa !!!

A faster game may be Wisconsin’s best chance. Their high ball sets allow Stanford to set up their 6’6″ + 6’3″ double block. Both Plummer and Fitzmorris are 6’6″.

Sheffield is going fast sets, …but it may require string sets. (Stanford’s Gates is quick to get outside.) Rettke is virtually a non-factor due to the less than perfect passing.

My first look at Plummer and it appears that Karsta Lowe’s days may be numbered with the National team. Karch will probably play Plummer at OPP (which is Karsta’s position).

    11. Jordan Thompson might compete for the Opposite as well and there is Annie Drews who already solidified her position there with the VNL MVP earlier this year.

Does Morgan Heinz have a shot at a libero with the USA national team? She is definitely faster than Megan Courtney, the current libero. I guess the real question is who is the better passer.

Next year may be a different story.

    – Wisconsin returns a good nucleus with Hilley (setter), Rettke (MB), Hart (MB), and a few others.

    – While Stanford loses 5 of their starting 6 (only McClure returning); although, they did have the #1 recruiting class in the nation.

    – Hawaii will be better as well. Notwithstanding the loss of Norene Iosia; Kyra Hanawahine should help with the passing, and the accomplished incoming middle should bolster the middle attack. If the setter is half decent Hawaii will again be in the mix.

I hope Wagoner gets more reps at Libero. Hanawahinee is not the answer. She’s too frenetic, all over the place and often out of position. She has a nice serve, though. I don’t understand why Gong was in the dog house this year. She did a good job last year.

  15. UncleFester December 22, 2019 7:29 am

    14. I like Wagoner too. Ah Mow praises her high VB IQ, and that would certainly be especially advantageous in a libero.

  16. Kahuna December 22, 2019 8:07 am

Robyn promised Wagoner a chance to be an OH and I don’t think Robyn will give up that idea after one season. It is in UH’s best interest that Wagoner become a starter at OH2 because after Brooke and Jolie graduate, there are only Riley and Hanna as 6 rotation players.

No one coming in this year is a 6 rotation player. Braelyn and Tiff could develop into one down the line but that is a long term project.

All you have to look at is how McKenna Ross have developed. Wagoner has better skill sets coming into the program so it wouldn’t take that long for Riley to become what Ross was this past season.

  17. Kahuna December 22, 2019 8:17 am

Wagoner is needed at OH2. We don’t have another 6 rotation player coming in until Mia Johnson in 2021 so it’s important that Wagoner develop in a starter. Jolie and BVS only have one more year so Riley will be counted on to fill their shoes.

  18. tongo December 22, 2019 10:43 am

Yeah, Riley clearly has the skills/IQ as well as leadership to be a great libero but I would really like to see what she can do as OH. Other than the hitting efficiency, she has demonstrated such high all around skills/know-hows in her freshman season. Let’s see what a year of training will bring now that she knows what is required to succeed.

  19. Big Island Volleyball Fan December 22, 2019 8:27 pm

So whom do you all recommend to be libero? Or does Robyn need to fish for a transfer to fill Rika Okino’s shoes? If there is no one else, that leaves either Janelle Gong or Brooke van Sickle who is also listed as a libero as well as outside hitter in the roster. The Amber Igiedi would have to be converted into a six-rotation hitter while Anna Kiraly, the new recruit, and Skyler Williams and Tiffany would alternate as middle blockers. Any suggestions?

  20. blunite December 22, 2019 8:43 pm

@ 19. Regarding your modest proposal, touché.

    – OH1: Jolie, 6’2″
    – OH2: Amber, 6’3″
    – OPP: Hanna, 6’3″

Defensive specialists: Kyra, Janelle, Riley, Brook

As for libero next season, I don’t think it will be Wagoner. They liked what they saw from her at OH.
    We will see.
