    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    Congratulations Emily!

And thanks Cindy for all the news/columns about our Wahine.

Congratulations to Mags on her selection.
Five Stanford Cardinals were selected. Four are sophomores and their fifth player is RS-Sr Merete Lutz It’s her fourth time to be selected. Impressive. Adora Anae selected in Pacific South Region.

Now hopefully she gets the second team all american recognition she deserves.

  4. rabbit ears December 5, 2017 11:35 am

    congrats! Very deserving…..on to beach.

Hope coach Robyn is trying to recruit Lea Monkhead. She is the real deal. Reminds me of Hartong.

  5. Warriorfan December 5, 2017 11:54 am

Re. Honestly I wouldnt mind Lea Monkhouse going indoors and playing both , but she could only play indoors next season if she is not on scholarship for beach (which I doubt)
So Monkhouse won’t be eligible to go on a indoor scholarship until after her second year. I think it could be win win for both programs, Coach hall gets another free scholarship to get another stud player while keeping Monkhous and coach Robyn gets a great all around player.
Lea Monkhouse might not be interested in playing indoors however:

Congrats to Emily Maglio! Such a deserving player. Hope she gets second team All-American.

Monkhouse is on a beach scholarship. I don’t think you’ll be seeing her indoors.

  7. Kalihifc December 5, 2017 2:48 pm

    Is Burns leaving?

  8. tongo December 5, 2017 5:07 pm

Well earned Emily! You are among the very best Middle Attackers in the country. And if fairness prevails, you will hopefully be awarded the AA status that you deserve. All the best on the beach!

  9. islandman December 5, 2017 5:08 pm

I don’t think Robyn wants the indoor spring training to be interrupted by a player playing sand volleyball.

  10. Setaone December 5, 2017 5:12 pm

    7. What makes you ask about Burns?

  11. greenthumb December 5, 2017 8:59 pm

Congratulations to Emily Maglio! I’m curious whether we will see her representing Canada in the future.

  12. rabbit ears December 5, 2017 10:23 pm

I once heard on this blog I think. That beach scholarships are only 1/4 and not full scholarships like indoors? Don’t know all the rules concerning them like stated above. I know baseball scholarships are 1/4 only too.

  13. setaone December 6, 2017 5:45 am

Beach scholarships are divided up how ever the coach decides. However amount that is allocated to Beach (say 5 scholarships), those 5 are broken out among scholarship players how ever the coach chooses.

This is the same for other sports like Men’s Volleyball, Baseball, Wrestling, and others.

  14. Astroboy December 6, 2017 8:48 am

I thought there was an NCAA rule that players on beach scholarships could not play indoor? I assume it was an incentive to boost beach, by preventing indoor from cannibalizing the beach scholarships?

  15. tako December 6, 2017 9:37 am

Robyn has demonstrated that she can coach WVB. The next hurdles are retention of players, recruiting and scheduling teams to play (APR predictions) for the next three years. Personally, I am awaiting to hear news of recruits (critical/immediate need) since we have a good number of openings and holes to fill for recruits to make a significant impact on next season, especially OH (need a Lexi Sun or Taylor Agost type player).

  16. Bleachercoach December 6, 2017 11:17 pm

I saw some indoor videos of Lea Monkhouse and I certainly agree with 4 and 5. She reminds me alot like Lilla Fredericks of Pepperdine ’10. Lillia was only 5’10 unlike 6’0″ Monkhouse, but they both are similar on how athletic and gifted in both beach and indoor. Monkhouse 6’0 looks 5’11” is one that fills that requirement IMO that may be undersized height-wised but makes it up on her very high skill level offensive and defensively. Definitely would help out both sports! Emily Maglio , Congratulations and Very Well deserved Achievement! She is deserving to be a 2nd or 3rd Team All American IMO! Can you imagine having the 2 Canadians (Mags and Monk) paired together in Beach! It won’t happen cause that’s not spreading 2 awesome players out. but….
Just imagine the M and M duo for the Canadian Olympic Beach Team 2024…

  17. rabbit ears December 7, 2017 8:44 am

DIdn’t Maglio say in a interview that she wanted to play indoors in Europe. M and M sounds real good on the beach. I actually thought Monkhead looked taller in person.

  18. Ron December 7, 2017 10:01 am

Since we are just wishing, I would like to see Pani Napoleon try out for libero. She is as fast as anyone I have seen on the beach. She reminds me of Tui on the mens side, fast and athletic. While we are at it, I would also add Martin as someone who could help immediately.

  19. kalihifc December 7, 2017 10:45 am

    Men ranked 5th

I don’t get why ucla is ranked ahead of uh but whatever.

    Auryte Mags!!!

We’re gonna miss your goofiness, facial expressions, and you…

SCHEDULING FOR NEXT YEAR WAHINE 2018.

With what happened this year with the RPI and being on the bubble, I think coach Robyn should TRY to schedule late non-conference matches with a strong Pac-10, Big-10, Big 12 or SEC team. In the past, albeit distant, the Wahine used to play a two game series with Stanford, USC, Washington etc. toward the end or to conclude the regular season. And also, I miss the WAC tournament being played over the Thanksgiving break (too bad that is gone). What the heck happened to the scheduling?!!!

Yea yea, I know there will be those that will try to make excuses as to why the schedule is the way it is these days, I’m just asking to TRY.

  23. FitTrainer December 7, 2017 7:44 pm

I think Maglio’s aspirations are to possibly play both pro indoors and beach.

I actually really like the idea of M and M playing together. It might be a bit of an adjustment at first but could pay if come tournament time.

USC, FSU and some of the other teams are looking like they have some really strong pairings (especially at the ones and twos-at least what they’ve shown initially). This season is going to have stiff competition. I like the idea of working a few wrinkles in the lineup…make as strong pairings as we can and use the depth!

I don’t see many (if any of the beach girls) playing indoor. The Beach game is becoming very competitive and beach specialists (with a few exceptions) will be the norm.

  24. rabbit ears December 7, 2017 10:01 pm

A full scholarship indoors vs partial on the sand. We could get a few. Alot depends on coach Robyn. I think coach Jeff would be open
to players playing both. The players would need to be able to take care of business in the classroom. I see Martin as a sand specialist where I think Monkhead would be great indoors.

  25. cappie the dog December 7, 2017 10:04 pm

If Nikki Taylor can’t make First Team, the biased Power 5-minded voters aren’t going to select someone from an unranked mid-major.

    Was Hawaii on the bubble?

I thought being a bubble team meant being one of the Last Four In?

  26. ManoaFan December 7, 2017 10:09 pm

    #20 Yea, me too.

  27. Warriorfan December 7, 2017 10:53 pm

There are players like Maglio who want to do both, I think Oglivie is another one so Coach Hall and Coach Robyn will need to work out an arrangement with athletes like Oglivie (who i hope commits to the wahine)

I think Mags has better stats this year than Nikki had last season so if she is left off second team, it will be criminal. Not being named big west POY might hurt her unfortunately.

  28. FitTrainer December 8, 2017 3:38 am

I think Monkhouse wants to focus on playing beach which isn’t why she chose to play Beach instead of indoor. But never say never.

I agree that Hall would be open to crossover as he has encouraged it in the past. I am not sure if Ah Mow Santos would be open to it. It certainly takes special players to focus on both while keeping up their achool
    Work.

    http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=45149
    new thread up for Friday.
    as for comments
    7. why would you ask about Burns leaving? as far as I know everyone returning
    9. it does sound like Ah Mow-Santos would prefer that the indoor team stay together in spring. The only crossover one this would affect would be Castillo since the others are seniors and done with indoor eligibility.
I believe Maglio hasn’t decided about returning to beach and is looking at indoor in Europe. but she’s still in school in spring so I don’t know what it would make any difference to her future career indoors if she played beach. but that’s just me.
Hall has been moving to beach-only anyway so this would not be a big change. He said he is happy to share athletes but that ti would have to be a two-way street
    12. 14. if you are on indoor scholarship you can walk-on for Beach. If you are on beach scholarship, which are usually partials, you cannot play indoor.
    19. new thread addresses that. thank
    22. there was nothing wrong with this year’s schedule. what went wrong was Hawaii losing.
they were not a bubble team IMHO.
People seem to think it’s easy to play two sports. it’s not. huge time commitment year-round.
Wong and Hall who coached both indoor and beach liked the crossover training. I don’t think Ah Mow-Santos feels that way. Although Ljungqvist played both so you never know.
