More HNN sports transition
Hawaii News Now bucked the trend recently by upping its sports staff to three anchors/reporters. Now, at least for the time being, HNN has four anchors and reporters covering the games people play in the islands
Ian Scheuring has moved from Sunrise producer to sports reporter and weekend sports anchor at Hawaii News Now, as of Friday, Scheuring said on social media today.
Francesca Weems and Taryn Hatcher are off the anchor desk now and reporting in the field. Both were at University of Hawaii football practice today.
Collin Harmon, who replaced Mark Carpenter who moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, remains the Monday through Friday anchor.
Also, there’s been talk for a while now that Norm Chow‘s coach’s show will move to HNN from Oceanic.
In a countermove, it is expected Oceanic will start a weekly roundtable-type show featuring three prominent local sportscasters.
UPDATE, Sunday, Aug. 16: I’m told by a source close to the situation that there will be no Norm Chow coach’s show on Hawaii News Now this year.
HNN continues to change broadcasters in an attempt to improve their competitive position against KITV and KHON. It’s not the broadcaster, its the format. HNN squeezes sports as an afterthought into two minutes, leaving the broadcaster to select three sports news items. Meanwhile, their competitors are covering 5, 6 or 7 sports news items over 4-5 minutes. As a viewer, I much prefer the station that does a better job of covering sports news.
Re-Taryn Hatcher
I watched her KGMB interview of UH WR-Collie during tonight’s 6 p.m. telecast.
She was great. I like her style. She brings the meat and potatoes to the table.
On Collie, she showed him at practice doing position drills. Then she included three interviews-one from the player (his thoughts…he wants to give it a 100% all the time, represent the team and school well), one from Wittek (“Collie’s is an exceptional player”) and finally one from Chow (I forgot what he said on the WR). Rounding out the report she touched on how Collie stayed in shape during his mission (30 minutes allowance a day). And she also described how Collie’s brother was in the NFL for five seasons and is now playing in the CFL.
What separates her from the dough boys (they know who they are)is that her reporting is captivating, where her voice and presence (looks) has appeal, and that she does a comprehensive, in depth report. It is also hard to believe that she is one year removed from college (Rutgers?), She has a bright future.
