Hannemann not applying for AD

Former Honolulu mayor Mufi Hannemann is not among the candidates for University of Hawaii athletic director.

“I did not apply and I am not a candidate,” Hannemann told me in a phone conversation Sunday evening.

Sources had said Hannemann was interested as far back as December, when it was announced Ben Jay would be leaving the position, and some of his supporters urged him to consider it.

Current UH associate athletic director John McNamara is the only of around 70 applicants to publicly acknowledge he applied.

Interviews started last week, and a source said UH has whittled contenders down to around 12.

Keith Amemiya and Rick Blangiardi have also been considered possibilities since January, but neither has confirmed or denied applying for the job.

Former UH football coach June Jones has also said he would not apply for the position of athletic director.

David Matlin‘s name has been mentioned as a potential candidate in recent weeks by sources. Matlin is the executive director of the Hawaii Bowl and the Diamond Head Classic basketball tournament.

Mufi as AD is ridiculous!! Enough of his nonsense. Lets see someone qualified do the job.

DR: Is Carl Clapp a candidate? He has a background of athletic director at the college level.

As much as I wish to remain positive, I have lost confidence in the University’s administration to make the right decision. Too much politics muddies the selection. Let them prove me wrong.

    No Mufi?

Well, that means no HART station at UH…. oh well.

Please no one from the previous Admin. No McNamara or Clapp we need to clean house. They are all part of the problem. Too start new we need new faces and new ideas.

No Mufi is good news for UH.

Sounds like it’s going to be one of those “huh? Who d’at?” guys to whom public-at-large (and only a verrrrrry few here in Hawai’i will know about) will react, verily.

But, we don’t have to immediately pretend to like him, like the last two.

Let this one prove himself. At least we’ll be ready for the disappointment.

Mufi? Mufi? Isn’t is time for him to get a real job. Enough sucking on the public tit.

I think Muffin missed the headline…Hannemann is NOT applying to be the AD. These knee-jerk Hannemann haters don’t even read the story anymore.

Despite the haters, Mufi has actually managed a large organization and left it with a surplus. He is the one potential candidate who could raise the money UHAD needs. He would have increased annual giving two fold and known who to tap for one time large donations. The next AD’s main job should be raising money.

Despite the nutswingers, Gufi’s legacy will always be the rail failure. The Railure. Please Hodad, inform us how Gufi increased the state’s surplus, in a manner that can be done as the athletic director. Mis-managing an organization that taxes everyone is different from trying to manage an organization that gets a fixed budget from the state and is reliant on IDEAS to make more money. “He would have increased annual giving two fold” — citation, or are you just so deep in Mufi?

All we know is, Gufi’s one act in the athletic arena was putting Dana Takahara-Dias into the position of Wahine Basketball coach. She won a paltry 35.5% of her games, and thankfully was replaced by Laura Beeman who has the Wahine at the top of the Big West.

You nutswingers need to stop fantasizing about what Gufi could do, and look at what he actually has failed in his doing.
