Warrior Beat: Ganot on BWC poll; Warriors go on the road

For UH basketball coach Eran Ganot, preseason polls are save-the-date reminders.

“I’ve always said the exciting thing about the preseason predictions that are going around right now is your season is a step closer,” Ganot said this morning.

In the media poll released today, the Rainbow Warriors are predicted to finish sixth in the nine-team Big West. UC Irvine, with 10 of the 24 first-place votes, is picked to win the league.

“The reality whether we’re picked first or the middle of the pack really has no bearing on how we proceed,” Ganot said. “At the end of the day, banners are hung and seasons are revered based on what you actually do and not what people say you can do.”

With eight of last year’s top 10 players back — and the addition of three 7-foot players and sharpshooter Eddie Stansberry — Ganot said “we really feel good about our team. We feel pretty good about the progression every year.”

But Ganot said the league also is trending upward, and there are “five or six” other teams deep with returnees.

After a crisp 90-minute, run-through practice today, the football Warriors were scheduled to depart this afternoon to California in advance of Saturday’s road game against Fresno State.

Coach Nick Rolovich said the emphasis is not on bowl possibilities or past rivalries.

“This is more of us playing a good game of football looking like a decent, at worst, football team, where we didn’t look like that last weekend,” Rolovich said.

I’m stoked for the Bball team this year! We finally have size and an outside threat in Eddie. Hopefully they can mesh and play some physical basketball in Big West play.

    seewhy:

ditto — we are planning to attend several games!

The Warriors look like a team that’s hit the proverbial wall. They’ve been playing the last several games like a team desperately in need of a break, a bye to regroup, mend and recharge. They haven’t been as sharp(as a team) in the last four games as they were as they were in the first five. We’re a young team with many first time starters and backups not use to the grind of practicing and playing a D1 schedule. I really feel we would have seen a better effort against Reno if the team had a bye before or after the BYU game.

Regarding the X’s and O’s. My opinion is besides execution, the coaches must find some creative ways to move the ball on the ground. Viewing our running game from an opponent’s perspective I see the Warriors as strictly as a hand off to the lone back and run the balls between the tackles. Defending the edges is not a big priority because the Warriors haven’t shown any plays designed to attack the edges and the featured RB has not shown to ability to bounce it outside if the point of attack is clogged. The QB rarely seems to fake the hand off and keep the ball to run, maybe he’s too dinged up.

Our opponents are all showing 3 man fronts, almost inviting us to run knowing the point of attack is somewhere between the tackles.

Well at least the Fresnecks don’t have a 6-9 middle linebacker.

B-Ball Bows should be exciting to watch this year.

Hoping our outside receivers step up, get Torres more involved in an H-Back type role. RT needs to step it up too

Hawaii’s non-conference schedule makes it impossible for at-large considerations in not just the NCAA Tournament, but the NIT, as well.

    The nadir is Alabama A & M.

I’d much rather play our sister school Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

  9. H-Man October 25, 2018 4:18 pm

Cocobean, yes…well said (second post re running game). Totally agree. JMO.

Hawaii should look toward Georgia Tech for inspiration.

I don’t think they were supposed to beat Virginia Tech at their place.

At 4-4, they kept their bowl hopes alive.

    Fresno State is not Alabama.

    Warriors come out and play.

Discipline. Live Aloha, Play Warrior! IMUA!

Rolo should show the team old clips of games that UH won @ Fresno State for inspiration. Especially the year 2008 when Fresno was nationally ranked. Since 2002, Hawaii is 5-3 in games on the road @ Fresno State, We seem to win more often over there than at home. Since 2003, Hawaii is 2-6 vs Fresno State @ Aloha Stadium.

  13. islandman October 26, 2018 10:18 am

    8. On the other hand, UH basketball has 4 non-conference games on the road, 3 in the Wooden Legacy and one vs UCLA.

  14. suckkabooya October 26, 2018 10:27 am

Fresno State’s offense is “methodical” and “pragmatic” with good sized receivers. Total opposite of Hawaii’s offense. Only when combined with the efficiency of their defense does it make them the “quite better than average” product that they are. But it was always like this when UH plays Fresno. “Stodgy” vs “stimulating” (it flip-flops year to year, Fresno is the stodgy this year). Usually lends itself to interesting outcomes. Almost like in rivalry games? Just play hard and do your best. Trust each other. And believe what you’ll see because Anything, ANYTHING…can happen.

  15. Maddog50 October 26, 2018 10:39 am

My opinion-FSU is good football team. I have watched all their games some more than once. They are a good football team. Warriors come energized and unyielding well then we’ll see. For some unknown reason we have not played one single full throttle game. So I would say this is time to start-My opinion, we are much, way better than last several weeks. No time to waste. Let the emotion flow into relentless energy. Simple Want vs. Will. GoWarriors!!! One last thing-attack the ball when in the air-both sides! GoWarriors!!!!

  16. islandman October 26, 2018 11:09 am

Someone on radio said UH’s offense is too predictable and also the OL hasn’t been able to block as well as it did in the first few games.

  17. A-House October 26, 2018 11:13 am

    #24 — question is WHY????

  18. Andrew October 26, 2018 11:14 am

    24.

I agree, they have become somewhat predictable at times especially during the Nevada game. I think they sometimes go to Furuta too often. The defense knew and was able to stop him.

  19. Inyoface October 26, 2018 11:51 am

    Run Cole run!

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid October 26, 2018 12:02 pm

Play with utmost body, soul and mind Warriors. That’s all you can ask of yourselves, and all that we can ask of you.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  21. turfwar October 26, 2018 1:38 pm

Taulia playing now on espn2. Interesting game as both senior QBs are Alabama commits.

  22. NorthShoreFan October 26, 2018 1:56 pm

Pre-season predictions are useless. We’ll surprise many this year.

O & D-line have the “blues”. They in a funk. Mental fatigue, physical fatigue? Anybody’s guess but they need to focus on their pwn responsibilities. Zeno commented they too involved with doing someone elses job….IMUA!

  23. seewhy October 26, 2018 2:20 pm

    RE: #25

Why are all of you guys so surprised. Don’t any of you remember the “predictable” play calling from last year? DSJ run between the tackles 2x, Dru Brown imcomplete pass, then punt. Pretty much the same exact it’s 2 straight run up the middle with Furuta, or Holly getting tackled or stuffed at the line, then a McDonald incomplete. Last time I checked, we still have the same OC and same HC. Nothings going to change until we hire a real OC.

  24. H-Man October 26, 2018 2:26 pm

Reminiscent of last season. Hand-off to Diocemy. Hand-off to Diocemy. Sideline pass. Punt. Well, this season, it’s hand-off to Dayton….QB told to stay in pocket…RnS,,.Cole slow release…OL breaks down. Would like to see Cole open things up with his running and coaching insert some other running plays. Mix it up a bit. Make it fun to watch. That’s all I ask.

  25. haka October 26, 2018 2:32 pm

I am just wondering…why did these comments come out early in the season when we were winning games?

  26. haka October 26, 2018 2:33 pm

    not come out…

  27. seewhy October 26, 2018 2:49 pm

    RE: #33

Because it was working and teams had no film of our new players. Now they do, and the entire coaching staff has failed to game plan and tweak the offense to what the defense is giving us.

  28. seewhy October 26, 2018 2:53 pm

If you go back and look at my comments, I was still calling out our OC for conservative and predictable play calling. Even when we won those games by a couple touchdowns. And I got a lot of flack for it. But now it has finally caught up to us and look where we are. Looking like last season with a stagnant offense.

okay, just wondering. it just seems i never hear the fans booing or grousing when we have a successful running play.
