Kailua lineman is joining Warriors

Naia Wong — the son of Kailua High coach and former NFL player Hauoli Wong — told the Star-Advertiser he is joining the Warriors.
Naia Wong, like his father, is an offensive lineman and Kailua High alumnus. Wong graduated in 2017 but spent the past year taking classes at Windward Community College.
After a post-high-school growth spurt, Wong is now 6-2 and 290.

In response to #35 – Pono inquiry yesterday concerning Mermea, it appears he has opened up his recruiting. According to 247 Sports, Utah State has offered Mermea, and that he is also talking to other schools, such as UCLA, Fresno State, Baylor etc.

    Judge Mui –

Nobody on this blog, including the host, has a better track record than you do for supporting UH sports! Nice to see YOUR posts here again.

  7. Maddog50 July 23, 2018 11:44 am

Spring roster had 11 OL minus Eli. You need in my opinion at least 16-18. 10 is just for depth chart even though cross trained. Looking forward to seeing fall roster posted.
A little more info from my Bears visit-Kevin Gilbride firmer two sport Warrior is on Bears staff along with first year Offensive Coordinator Mark Helfrich formerly Oregon HC.

UH Men’s Basketball roster was posted today.

  9. PONO July 23, 2018 12:12 pm

It doesn’t really matter about Mermea, but I’m just interested. Really interesting how many transfers, academic non-qualifiers and guys who just quit the team there are. That’s over 10 players. Is anyone looking into the coaching. The numbers are astounding. A couple of players that’s normal but this is a ton of scholarship players.

  10. DaveLetterMan July 23, 2018 1:23 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!
Does anyone know why Davine Tullis got dismissed from the team? Thought he would do good in the run n shoot.
ST – does he have a chance to be reinstated?

  11. Capt Ron July 23, 2018 1:24 pm

#9 Pono, I don’t know much about all of this, but losing the guys we’ve lost doesn’t worry me. To me it probably has a lot to do with the number (improvement) of coaches. Difference in personalities and styles of players and coaches can lead to many parting of the ways.

Go Warriors. Defend Pride Rock! Live aloha, play WARRIOR!!!!!!

Back on land again and checking in.
    Welcome Naia Wong!

As we approach the 12th anniversary of the Warrior Beat blog, it’s great to see the year 1 bloggers checking in again!

    #10 Re: Tullis
Tullis was arrested and charged with Abuse of a Family or Household Member and Terroristic Threatening. The charges were dismissed without prejudice as the complainant was in Japan at the time of trial.

I don’t think it is any kind of rocket science to have an idea of why there were so many players who left after last season. between the disappointing record, the internal turmoil (like a position coach leaving in the middle of the season in a very public fashion) and turnover of half of the coaching staff, it isn’t THAT surprising. It would be something if we lost 10 players and truly didn’t know why. bottom line is that there was some dysfunction last season and some decided it was better to start over somewhere else. it happens.

  15. Boolakanaka July 23, 2018 2:22 pm

Hey, we should all try and support the team: coaches, staff and players. But to say last year wasn’t a sloppy debacle would be to be both naive and ignorant. Things went down last year that we know about —and probably a great deal that we don’t know about and never will.

In order for us to go forward we have to accept the past (and the past was not pretty), but as with every new season, we have both opportunity and a chance for redemptive improvement….I’m looking to this season.

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid July 23, 2018 2:23 pm

That’s a good way to look at it Aaron. Mahalo.

What matters to we fans most, is what comes ahead.

University of Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior *** Jahlani Tavai *** has been named to the 2018 preseason watch list for The Butkus Award, honoring the nation’s best linebacker. It is the first time the senior and two-time Mountain West pick has appeared on the list.

    Welcome Naia!
I guess Hauoli is a true dolphin fan!

Camp is right around the corner! The long layoff always leads to the hype and excitement of a new season. Hopes and dreams for coaches, players and fans alike rev up the adrenaline and get the juices flowing. Although winning is always the bottom line, a positive progression of improvement is what is needed to maintain the course of dreams through what is a rather tough schedule. Lots of “newness” this season so dream big, live aloha and we just might turn the corner as happy campers!

    Go Warriors!

  19. Paniola July 23, 2018 4:10 pm

This year’s Warrior football team has some big and heavy Offensive lineman. We need those big lineman in the “Run and Shoot” to protect the quarterback and give him that extra few seconds to locate an open receiver.

As to who will be the Warrior’s starting quarterback, in my opinion, I really believe it will be Chevan Santiago. Tua and Mariota came out of St. Louis Crusadaers run and shoot, and both turn our to be awesome. Santiago will follow their footsteps for our Warriors….might, I say might, be better than Colt Brennan and another St. Louis Crusader quarterback great – Timmy Chang.

    Thanks, NotNasti.
What a shame. Next man up. Looking forward to this season.

ST, will Eli be redshirting this year or is he done with football?

  22. islandman July 23, 2018 7:29 pm

    2018 Football roster posted
    https://hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=football

  23. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2018 7:44 pm

    AllG:
If Eli doesn’t play this year, he’s done.
    He already graduated.
I think he’s got some Canadian residency, or something like that, and probably could get a shot in the CFL, if he choose to continue to play.

  24. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2018 7:47 pm

I thought Mermea should have stayed.
He redshirted last year, which meant he would have had to redshirt if he hooked up with another D-1 school. If he really wanted to go, he should have played a year at UH, then moved, if that was his choice. But to abandon a scholarship … well, hey, it’s his life. Wish him the best.

  25. Luvhisports July 23, 2018 7:58 pm

Aloha from Vegas. Had both Greeley boys left or out of UH?

  26. PONO July 23, 2018 8:04 pm

The four guys who really excite me are Paul Scott, Doug Russell, Ilm Manning and Funkhouser.

  27. Inyoface July 23, 2018 8:31 pm

Finally a Surfrider on the team.

  29. Ran July 23, 2018 9:50 pm

Did not see Jonah Panoke on the roster?

  30. H-Man July 23, 2018 11:58 pm

Eli not listed, but his number (65) not assigned. Wade and Washington also missing. Panoke grey-shirt (2019). Including Wong (latest addition) and Cheung (move to O-line), I count 19 O-linemen.

  31. roygbivs July 24, 2018 12:43 am

Raimo grew an inch…? He looks da same. Like how that BB roster shaping up to be, love to see how Coach EG can keep moving upwards

Is it just me but doesn’t the UH football roster need to be edited. DEs listed as DBs. Safety listed as WR.
