Hawaii football practice No. 5: Pads on, restrictions off

Today’s first fully padded practice meant anyone who did not throw or kick a football was a target.

“It was exciting,” nickelback Eugene Ford said of the two full-contact, 11-on-11 sessions. “All that tagging off (in limited-contact practices), we’re not used to that. We play football in full pads. It gives us a good feel of what it’s going to be like in a game.”

The defense set the tone — and imprint — early. On the first play of the situational session, Ford picked off a pass. On the second play, defensive end Pumba Williams barreled in for a sack.

“Love it,” head coach Nick Rolovich said of the defense’s enthusiastic play. “I told them a few days ago, teh biggest opportunity to jump into Phase II on this football team is defensively.”

The offense did have its moments. Miles Reed, who is fighting for an expanded role at running back, scooted around left end and then sprinted untouched into the end zone for a 45-yard TD. Reed credited the O-linemen.

“Those guys got out and ran and hit their landmarks, and I just followed behind,” Reed said. “It’s a little elephants on parade. I got a couple big guys out in front of me, hitting a couple linebackers. I had to duck inside. I’m kind of small. I could hide behind those guys a little bit.”

Chevan Cordeiro and slotback James Phillips collaborated on a 70-yard TD play. “We’ve been practicing it,” Cordeiro said. “It was mostly the O-linemen. They blocked good, and they gave me time.”

Phillips said: “Chevan gave me a good ball.”

Phillips and Cordeiro have developed a strong bond working mostly on the second unit. Phillips transferred from Mount San Jacinto College in January. Phillips said they often go over plays and calls “so we can be on the same page.”

Who threw the pick to start situational? Cole?

  4. H-Man July 31, 2019 3:52 pm

First practice, full pads. Defense ruled the day. I’ll go again on Saturday, hoping the offense shows better execution.

  5. H-Man July 31, 2019 3:55 pm

Spidey, it was Cole. Looked like he and the receiver were not on the same page. Cole also overthrew his receivers; throws that might have gone for TDs. But it was first practice in full pads. We’ll see.

    Congratulations Joshua Rojas!

  7. ADG July 31, 2019 5:17 pm

As a Warrior fan. Love to hear the defense is coming together, per the rough schedule coming up. Arizona Wildcats, Washington Huskies.

  8. cappie the dog July 31, 2019 5:25 pm

I would never have guessed that Jordan Yamamoto and Joshua Rojas would surpass Kean Wong, a paragon of consistency. He put up better numbers than Jake Bauers when he was with Tampa, and yet he got the call. This reminds me of Joey Vierra and the Cincinnati Reds.

Previous day post justsomeguy: i thought Kade Greeley medically retired in 2018.

  10. burro sabio July 31, 2019 11:21 pm

Congratulations on being traded? Arizona put one of the pitchers in the trade on the 40 but not Rojas.

    per ST:

Center Kohl Levao will miss a “significant part” of the Hawaii football team’s training camp because of an undisclosed injury, head coach Nick Rolovich confirmed on Wednesday.

  12. justsomeguy August 1, 2019 4:08 am

    Islandman:

I think you’re right, but his name still showed up in the transfer portal a couple days ago….now that you mention it I remember him and Ulu-Perry retiring early 2018, but for some reason he’s showing up (not sure if I’m allowed to post a link, if not, my apologies Stephen)

    https://247sports.com/college/hawaii/Season/2019-Football/TransferPortal/?status=uncommitted

Pono: Cameron Hayes and Manase Time are listed in the portal as well as of 7/31/2019

    Additionally,

DB Mykal Tolliver appears headed to Montana (A very talented FCS team)
DB Jay Dominique appears headed to North Dakota (FCS National Champions 7 of the last 8 years)
WR Eric Rooks is off to Eastern Illinois (Closer to his family in Chicago)

QB Jeremy Moussa is as of yet, undecided.

    14. Didn’t he say Levao was out ?

  17. H-Man August 1, 2019 6:52 am

Injured? When? How? Waiting for more details. This sucks with two key guys down already.

  18. islandman August 1, 2019 7:03 am

He said Levao but i didn’t hear McDonald was out. (?)

  19. Chicken Grease August 1, 2019 7:06 am

    Clarification: Cole Lavalle is injured.

Best to either in any case.

    Please stay healthy, McDonald.

  20. Chicken Grease August 1, 2019 7:07 am

    Lavao, not “Lavalle”.

  21. Uhfan August 1, 2019 7:36 am

Does anyone know if the New Mexico and UNLV football games will be televised via Spectrum pay for view? The UH Athletic site does not indicate anything

  22. burro sabio August 1, 2019 8:16 am

Kohl and Cole sound the same when spoken by most people, or when mumbled by Curran.

The wages of football. ..Al Noga has dementia. W Comp claim vs Vikings dismissed. Did he get soc security disability ?

  24. H-Man August 1, 2019 8:40 am

The interesting move on Wednesday was having Solo Vaipulu replace the injured Kohl Levao at center, when you have Eliki Tanuvasa who started at center at Eastern Illinois and Ta’aga Tu’ulima who stated at center for Hawaii. Perhaps it was an audition of sorts for Micah Vanterpool to see how he performs with the 1s.

Miles Reed continues to break long runs, but is still considered 3rd string behind Fred Holly and Dayton Furuta. It’s no wonder UH having trouble recruiting RBs.

I thought QB Boone Abbott got a lot of reps for a true freshman.

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid August 1, 2019 8:41 am

I watched the whole practice and loved the crackling energy on the field. The Warriors look amped and raring to go. Said it before, I’ll say it again: this team looks like the best team Rolo’s had in his time here.

The passing game looked rusty, but I think the “D” is good enough to make it look so. I’m sure it will all come together with more reps.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid August 1, 2019 10:47 am

Too bad about Noga. Know him to be a good guy who always played full throttle. Ironically it is his stoicism and lack of complaints to those around him which is the excuse given by this ruling. Al Noga gave the game his all, and it’s sad to see the response from the Vikings.

  27. islandman August 1, 2019 11:06 am

25 . Also read obit for the famed Nick Buoniconti ,age 78, who passed away Tuesday, he ” struggled in recent years with symptoms of CTE. Also his son was paralyzed making a tackle for The Citadel in 1985.

  28. justsomeguy August 1, 2019 11:38 am

    Thanks Islandman!

  29. Chicken Grease August 1, 2019 12:47 pm

Well. No “boy who cried wolf” here 🤪.

Looks like forthcoming UH practices (including Saturday’s scrimmage) have been modified due to da hurricanes l’dat, per Josh Pacheco Show going on now, and me mentioned by Bobby Curran speaking with Josh.

Looks like practices will be at St. Louis school.

This would be the last practices open to public, no?

will practice off campus on Friday and Saturday.
Both practices will be closed to the public #HawaiiFB #StarAdvertiser

  31. O.Ranks August 1, 2019 2:41 pm

    @13

North Dakota State has been the FCS Champs 7 of the last 8 years.

  32. turfwar August 1, 2019 3:30 pm

DPK I have to agree with Noga’s lawyers that this ruling will hurt the future of the Vikings when players hear about the state rulings on Noga and will not consider the Vikings if other options are available and for players willing to play there it’s a certainty that their agents will ask for higher salaries to compensate for possible CTE problems post playing days.

  33. islandman August 1, 2019 3:47 pm

NIck Buoniconti was 78, Al Noga is only 53. Article said there was some kind of settlement in 2004. The one in contention must be another case. He was declared legally blind in 2008.
How about appealing this claim to higher courts ?

  34. cappie the dog August 1, 2019 4:02 pm

burro sabio: Time to get reading glasses. On his MiLB page, I saw Houston Astros. To the left, I somehow missed the word “traded”. The Astros are twenty-nine games over .500, so maybe it’s for the best.

  35. burro sabio August 1, 2019 5:49 pm

CtD, haha, you made me have to look to see who Joshua Rojas was. Had to think for awhile before I realized he is Josh Rojas, memory getting bad. He finally showed up today on their Triple A roster, in Reno and is actually having a pretty good season so far.

  36. H-Man August 1, 2019 6:54 pm

Rob DeMello reported on the 6pm news Rolo will open a practice to the public sometime later to make up for closing tomorrow’s and Saturday’s practices. Rolo changed practice times at the last minute this past spring due to impending inclement weather. We might see some rain on Saturday, but no hurricane or tropical storm as Erick passes to the south of Hawaii. I guess it doesn’t rain over the St. Louis field, a stone’s throw from UH’s Cooke Field.
