UH loses Harville to St. Mary's

What was feared in some corners proved true with Hawaii commit Tyler Harville, who was to be a preferred walk-on with the Rainbow Warriors in the fall.

Harville decided to enroll at Saint Mary’s instead. UH won’t get to find out — firsthand, anyway — just how deadly the diminutive guard’s shooting stroke could be.

“It was a last-minute decision thing. Just a better situation for me, guard-wise,” Harville said on Sunday.

Harville played some spot minutes in the College Summer League this Thursday and Saturday while here on vacation with his family. He initially planned to remain here for summer school and the rest of summer league, but he canceled those plans and notified the UH coaching staff.

His choice was made, in part, by who wasn’t here rather than who was.

“(Former UH assistant Scott) Fisher got me over here,” Harville said. “After Fisher left, nobody … I didn’t hear from any of the coaches for a good month and a half. They didn’t show as much love as Saint Mary’s did. Just a better situation for me, but no hard feelings or nothing. Just a better opportunity.”

Fisher is now the head coach at Ohlone College in Fremont, Calif.

Harville affirmed he worked out with the Gaels recently and hit it off with them.

“And I went and visited and everything a while back. Just kind of fell into place last minute, really,” he said.

—————

Much was made of Harville’s commit to UH. Do you think the walk-on would have lived up to the hype?

Its a walk on were talking about…. Mucha do about nothing… Not saying it never happens. But 95% of the time, walk ons in basketball don’t make big impacts

  2. islandman July 6, 2014 12:15 pm

He may have been a deadly shooter for UH. But the shooters seem to cool off when they come to the islands and competition changes to Div 1, like Manroop’s case.

Looks like Gib wasn’t interested in him.

  3. fan4mbb July 6, 2014 12:44 pm

    1. Unfit (worse than that other guy).
    2. Fail ‘TEAM test’.
    3. Doesn’t have it (can’t finish anyway).
    4. Follow the ‘love’ (it’s a good thing for all concerns; save huhu).

  4. jeezy33 July 6, 2014 12:45 pm

    2. Jawato is a deadly shooter. Bigger, stronger, more athletic and isn’t much of a factor. Hawaii plays a higher pace transition type offense. Shooters that are specialist are more suited for half court style that allows them to run off screens and motion. Losing a short walk on isn’t going to hurt by any means. Inability to add front court help during recruiting season might hurt a lot though.

  5. islandman July 6, 2014 1:20 pm

Why did Gib let him become a preferred walk on, if Gib wasn’t really for it ?

  6. poorboy July 6, 2014 1:29 pm

    Brian:

Probably huge thing, Fisher found Tyler, then went to Ohlone. When Tyler goes to St Mary’s to workout, that shows he looking somewhere else to walkon, correct. He does not hear, he says, though assistant coach texted summer league schedule and team he would be on, the UH courses for summer session supposedly set to enroll on. Basically a nice 6 or 7 day vacation for Tyler,.. with smaller but bullish Keola Stitzel just going to rim right through him, and Keola is 3 inches shorter however about 30 pounds heavier, an smaller college mainland veteran, that set the tone.. Dyrbe Enos, our 808 preferred walkon, is solid, hit the three, good court vision, will have improved PG skills and D up. And Nikola Filopovich, who is TEAM UH MBB ohana, he loves it here, he will come back as that junkyard dawg, just would have ate up Tyler, because Tyler physically limited. Wish the best for him.. If Tyler in 3 years at St Marys sets all time 3 ball records, great. however, was not right fit for UH MBB..did not even go to first day of summer school, he tried, very hard with more playing time, Silva let him go in second half, could not put up that 25 point 6 three point game that Dyrbe, or Nevels is doing in Drew league. Enough walkons, Gib has, 4, with possibly Wright and Hearn? that makes maybe six guys trying to walkon. long shot..however, Gib concentrate on getting a good SF or ready to play big, going to need if Sammis has trouble qualifying.
Too much hype, and too much pressure on a guy on vacation, wish him well with the Gaels.

  7. Hoosier July 6, 2014 2:45 pm

Good for him . Good fit . I thought he could have helped with three point shooting but oh well . I am surprised at the comments about overhyping and some sour grapes comments about this young man. No one said he was going to come in and score thirty a game in summer league . Whoever thought that then it is on them . Walk on who was going to get a chance to contribute. . But , if I were him , I would be headed to St. Mary ‘s too. Too crowded out here at the guard position and, obviously, not really on Gib’s radar

  8. poorboy July 6, 2014 2:58 pm

Hoosier, he was a Fisher find, Fish not here. He feels Gib did not contact in last month, records of blogs, show they did. Summer league set up. He knows to enroll in school. I think that is all they could do. If he was sincerely interested, he would have stayed here , went to school, and went the route of Hackman , Harper, who just gutted it out, did well in school and enjoyed Hawaii experience.
Totally off base to blame Gib and UH staff, waay off.
Tyler was here on a Glorified , hyped by his scout, Hawaii Vacation, after he did the workout, with Bennett and staff, and they loved him, gave him till end of July to decide, he was a Gael, He had NO INTENTION to become a walkon warrior, none at all, it is obvious. otherwise, he would never have gone to St Mary’s, right…why go somewhere else, if he was committed, whether coach calls him 24/7 or a few times in a month. The other walkons no problem great kids. Wish him well, however, he could have attitude problem brewing, and some bad advice out of the east. I hope not. He enjoyed a wonderful Hawaii vacation for 7 days.. that was a treat for him. thank his parents, and for sure do not blame Gib..he had nothing to do with that St Mary’s tryout, Tyler went there and as soon as he got the LOVE.. he was going there.. he just came here to go to the beach, with a crazy cover story. plain and simple. NO LOSS FOR Gib, he was not on scholarship. Good bye to Tyler hope he gets degree, and listens to good advice

  9. HawaiiMongoose July 6, 2014 3:02 pm

When Tyler’s name first popped up I checked out his videos and posted that I thought his size would be an issue on defense. Sounds like his brief summer league appearances bore that out. Maybe a couple of years in a D-I training regimen will help him bulk up and overcome that limitation. But UH needs players who can contribute now. So, it’s probably best for all parties that Tyler go the St. Mary’s route. Best of luck to him.

  10. Hoosier July 6, 2014 3:25 pm

Poor boy or Playhoopsa or whatever moniker u go by, RELAX. Are u married to Gib??? I said nothing about Gib but u are super sensitive about him. And u say the kid has an attitude problem? Wow! Free country. Go to school where he feels he has best chance to get free education. I don’t see that as an attitude problem.

  11. Derek July 6, 2014 5:08 pm

For a guy who was a preferred walk on who is 5’10” who can shoot the basketball from 3 but we don’t know about his quickness and defense he sure got a lot of ink and talk on the blogs. I mean, over a hundred comments. I mean, that must be record for a walk on. Ultimately, Arnold didn’t recruit Harville. I agree we have a lot of guards now. We needs some height and bulk.

  12. poorboy July 6, 2014 5:15 pm

    Derek:

you are right too much hype and talk and not even a scholarship athlete. wish him well. I think Dyrbe Enos at this stage is much better than Tyler, just knowing UH MBB system and his physical strength, plus Dyrbe can hit that long 3 point bomb. Dyrbe will play again this year. Hope that Bobbitt heals well, the guard gem of recruiting class. However we have to see Fleming 3 star athlete in action, as well as walkon Stepteau, return of Niko Filopovich, whom I think can be really good, he loves to defend. Smith and Nevels stronger and better, Jawato 100% healed and that streak 3 point bomber, will help UH a lot, plus Jawato graduating May 2015, that is very, very good!

  13. poorboy July 6, 2014 5:17 pm

Same with Zach Buscher, great to have local HS talent as walkon, he is long and tall. He has to work on putting on good weight and strength, he sticks with it, very hard for full time student athletes to do, scholarship or not, Zach in a few years could be very good, a very tall, one of the tallest I remember combo guard. He has skill, just has to get stronger, same as Tyler.

  14. pocho July 6, 2014 6:19 pm

Just do your best Tyler. Good luck to yah!

  15. Hoosier July 6, 2014 9:14 pm

Omg! That ‘s right , poor boy , Buscher is gonna be all Big West in two years . C ‘mon, man, just because he is a local kid doesn’t mean he is the next Alika! Lord save me from wasting any more time on these boards. I gotta take my own advice and get a life. I will be in the stands come November but until then nothing really matters.

  16. poorboy July 6, 2014 10:16 pm

    Brian:

No loss. Harville walkon who was going to st marys mind made up already ..family planned vacation so he had to come..want real story..get quote from gib..was he ignoring no love for tyler or like all walkon so many this year..he attend school first..then gib work with kid if ncaa allowed..too much misinformation for walkon that was schooled be keola stizel 5’6″ 180 lb guard in summer league..tyler will have to grow..

and hoosier get a grip..why so negative on hawaii bb kids..in next few years. Ones at uh mbb could one day comprise one third of mbb teamm..give them hope not negative dope..and hoosier..man this is hawaii not indiana..riley’s team with ac kicked their butts.

  17. Jake July 6, 2014 11:59 pm

Playhoopsa/poorboy/poncho/etc….I have to say what is embarrassing is how little u boys actually know about basketball. From 2007-2013 only 4 teams have averaged 25 wins a ywar. Duke, Kansas, Gonzalez and yes St. Mary’s. So I guess they must be totally stupid to want Harville. Yep. That passes the common sense test. Haha. I will check back in another month once NCAA investigation results come in. My real thoughts r u are naive about those as well. Take care. Wish u the best.

  18. poorboy July 7, 2014 12:11 am

Jake : yep, we stupid, but St Mary’s offered a walkon spot to Tyler, what if Bennett, and Ganot, they get wind of all the trash you dealing out, and the junk stuff, and Bennett goes, Tyler , thanks but no thanks. by the way, for far worse NCAA violations, St Marys gaels on a 4 year probation though they can play ncaa tourney expect less if any a hit on UH.

Hey Brian, this Jake, I don’t know, calling out basically Hawaii bb and its fans, and never answered legit questions, do not know if he is legit BB scout, you ever hear of one out of Vermont? Real trash talker now. what if Tyler, decides to go JC route, would have been best I think, get better stronger, and go soph,. route DI if offered full ride next year.

Jake you still never answered the questions Pocho asked you?

  19. Jake July 7, 2014 12:19 am

I don’t answer silly questions. Just be happy. You have some really, really good players in Bobbitt and Fleming. Rainbow Warriors will be really good. I know I personally hope u win every game. Night poorboy. When u learn more about the game I will check back in. Haha. And Tyler Harville probably doesn’t remember me so why u want to continue to dis the kid because u don’t like me shows your character. Not sure why u continue to call Bennett, Clarke and Fisher stupid for liking Harville potential.

  20. poorboy July 7, 2014 12:30 am

Jake quit the spit talking, you are disrespecting a whole state. We are older than you, you are nothing but a young relative or friend of Tyler if not Tyler himself…NO professional sports writer, or hoops talk guru, would trash old people and we are at least 25 years older than you. Totally no class. You still never answered Pocho, and you being called out on blogs you made . The errors, stop the trash, I tell you, no sense keep it up, what spit, total spit. I know, you nothing about being adult and professional YOU ARE NO SCOUT, NO SPORTS reporter, just a young person with a smart phone or tab. Yeah we don’t know your kind of Basketball, however we know respect for Gib and any HC. Bennett, and Ganot, their program already under probation, and Bennett acknowledge that, so he has more class than you, I tell you, continue the spit, and that’s it,…Hawaii, and Tyler say goodbye Uncle Jake..what a fool.

  21. poorboy July 7, 2014 12:33 am

Jake : I was a fan of you, and Tyler, now, you made it, ….sheesh…you calling out..shoots ha,ha, you still got me duped. aloha. PAU, I give up. wish the best for Tyler and St Marys and Hawaii MBB..ha, ha.

    Have a good day Jake!
Aloha, was kind of fun, however, keep it civil!
Too dopey this conversation. I am not HC and you are not a Scout really we both dupe ourselves, waste of about a month, and I was really promoting, and you know it, Tyler..what a fool, an old one.. aloha, PAU this topic!

  22. Jake July 7, 2014 12:51 am

Not dissing anyone but u…..last comment on this site. Love Hawaii. Aloha

  23. Hoosier July 7, 2014 6:49 am

Poor boy . Been here for over thirty five years so please do not pull out that local v Indiana baloney. FACT is that not too many local kids are playing D1 due to size and competition level. And no need to remind me of UH win over IU . Was at the game and rooting for Bows (apologies to fellow IU alums). Basketball in my blood from small kid time so I think I know a bit about the game. Don’t mean to ruin your main recreation (posting on this board and WI) by offering opinions that do not match yours. Will leave so you can get back to those who agree with you and have the patience to wade through those rambling posts

  24. pocho July 7, 2014 7:00 am

a part time scout or writer would have better choice of words, especially a seasoned one. lol, you could get a lot of bb programs in trouble or just plain being investigated. Luckily you cleared it up and clarified your position. I give you that. hahahahaha, but don’t know if your clarification is the truth or not to tell you the truth.

  25. Lowtone123 July 7, 2014 7:49 am

When Fisher left nobody kept in touch with the kid, no contact for a month and a half?

  26. poorboy July 7, 2014 8:58 am

    Pocho:

we are the cheerleader, fans of UH sports, I know and respect your blogs all over, not just sports topics. You always try to get the truth, be honest, and even apologize if in error. A real class , first class person. This Jake, remember, it is like cyber bullying , exactly, he will never come to Hawaii and meet us and have a soda or poke. Just the art of online bullying, which is not good.
I hope he does not come back to the Hawaii Forums.. he still hasn’t answered the legitimate questions you and others had. I hope Brian Mcinnis, if you can Brian, a simple comment about the Tyler walkon situation. Gib comments and it is over. Gib has more serious concerns, however he is really positive and his athletes are coming to UH, still which is great news. Man, I hope Sammis makes it, and Gib gets that last big, or bigs…see Pocho, I am such a fan, I have to talk, not trash…but about UH MBB which I love!

  27. islandman July 7, 2014 10:02 am

Here’s a short piece in today’s Hawaii Beat, staradvertiser:

UH hoops team loses recruit to Saint Mary’s

University of Hawaii basketball recruit Tyler Harville decided against following up on his commitment to play for the Rainbow Warriors as a preferred walk-on for the 2014-15 season.

Harville, a 5-foot-11 incoming freshman known for his shooting prowess out of the Vermont Prep Academy, told the Star-Advertiser on Sunday he will attend Saint Mary’s of the West Coast Conference instead of UH. He said his decision was made in part because former UH assistant Scott Fisher, Harville’s primary contact with the ‘Bows, is no longer in Manoa.

Fisher is now the head coach at Ohlone College in Fremont, Calif.

“Fisher got me over here,” Harville said while in the islands on vacation with his family. “After Fisher left, nobody … I didn’t hear from any of the coaches for a good month and a half. They didn’t show as much love as Saint Mary’s did. Just a better situation for me, but no hard feelings or nothing. Just a better opportunity.”

  28. pocho July 7, 2014 12:54 pm

    poorboy,

as long as I’ve read your posts/comments it’s been mostly if not all positive until jake started to post his/or was it Tyler’s feelings. Jake is like a few parents who watches his kid at Little League Baseball practices day in/day out and dwells on the kid’s performance, in which even I got caught up in, hahahaha but never vocally displayed my displeasure. I’ve seen a parent or two in the days make “a” of themselves and worse yet the kid has to live with that shame.

I admit I bit what jake had to say about Tyler but when he started to say things from his heart and how he felt, he exaggerated some. The St. Mary’s shooting test in which Tyler made 43 IIRC and jake himself getting messages that Akana and Gib having conversed with him, it’s all on other message boards and maybe in these blogs too. You have to wonder if jake got bad 2nd hand info, did Gib actually tell Tyler he could teach em surfing, did Akana really tell Tyler what team he was on, hahahaha. Somebody’s lying Tyler, Tyler’s friend who’s posting jake or jake himself of not hearing anything from UH Coach/Staff. Somethings not jiving and I say they are full of …. , you know what just to make Gib/Staff look bad. If only Gib/Akana would want to tell their side of the story in which I believe they won’t say a peep on Tyler situation.

I listened to jake’s snake oil and bit, I cannot tell which are real or fibs or just over exaggeration to tell you the truth. If it’s against himself or Tyler he’d get very upset, no doubt about that.

I done with this. You doing fine poorboy

  29. poorboy July 7, 2014 1:11 pm

Pocho : thanks, we bit, took the bait! shoots sometimes we want to believe, seemed to good to be true. NO ill feelings towards Tyler Harville, hey his parents paid big money to bring family here for vacation. So Tyler owes a lot to his OHANA! And to go to private school St Marys that is a lot of money. Wish him the best!

Pocho, even other side, WI, that is such a good family site, we better keep it cool too, sad that Jake had to show venom on that side, upset some of the regulars. Too old and tired to battle so much over, non news. Hey Pocho, keep on posting, you are very intelligent guy, Gib go get em, reel in some good Bigs, and keep the UH MBB Warrior fans happy, ..he will, he is trying his best!
Mahalo for kind words, I might be many things, but I am not Pupule, not yet! ha, ha!
    🙂

    ________________________________________
I heard Coach Bennett with St. Mary’s told Tyler he certainly passed the “shooting test”. Said he wished he was 15 lbs heavier. He said he had never seen anyone make 42 straight threes like Tyler did during the shooting drills. They would like him to walk on but because of their probation they most likely will not have a scholarship available until year 3. Supposedly Tyler has until end of July to make final decision. He told coach Clarke and Bennett he most likely would stay with Hawaii but would give final answer end of July.

    ________________________________________
Coach Akana told Tyler about 15 minutes ago they are still putting the teams together and to worry he would be added soon. Looked like 13 players on 6 teams. Why not have 8 teams? Maybe alot of players just don’t show to alot of games?

I’m sure he will love it. Now that u mention it Tyler did say Gib told him he would teach him to surf. How does a old scout swing moving to that paradise? All u guys must be rich or just live in a hut. A lot of us in the East ate jealous. Boston is actually an awesome city but can’t compete with that weather that is for sure.
    —————————————————————
Jake did not mention when he got wind of this message about Gib telling Tyler the above

  31. Turfwar July 7, 2014 2:11 pm

Sorry but the kid can’t play at this level. Manroop is a fair comparison. But Manroop was quicker. Short, below average quickness and can’t defend anybody. While he has a nice stroke he will struggle to get his shot off in a game. Now if we were playing horse he might be my first pick. He should find a place to play and it’s not St. Mary’s. There are great guards in that league. There’s tons of schools with hoop programs where he could be more than a spot up guy and in leagues where there’s a better chance to defend guys his level. No wonder Fisher isn’t here anymore.

  32. poorboy July 7, 2014 3:49 pm

    Pocho:

He says he won’t answer stupid questions. Maybe, probably he cannot defend that documentation. Hard in the cyber world, anyone can say anything, ….however we live in the real world. Have to deal with truth, upright, be honest, teach young and old., Live by One Ohana, Team first, others first, be polite, integrity, Aloha spirit, sadly lacking nowadays.
Well, Pocho, interesting, I wonder if Tyler might not end up eventually at another school. Wish him well, he and family, had time of their lives in Hawaii vacation, that is why no ill feelings. Wanted to go to St Marys, so be it! Good job Pocho, however, I have to take break from the post time too, get back to business and take care ohana, mostly on the WI..Mahalo brother, you are really PONO!

  33. poorboy July 7, 2014 4:02 pm

    Brian:

Are Stefan Jovanovich and Nikola Filipovich from same area of California? Know they attended same prep or HS? One of top teams in Cali HS.. one time I think even nationally ranked? Even Valdes from same school or even Quincy too I think.

Would be neat if Stefan and Niko are working open gym summer league up in Cali, and hitting weights and getting bigger ,stronger and faster. They will be key…We need Jovanovich, like right now to help down low…so thin the frontcourt, and Niko if he gets bigger, he loves D, can help perimeter defense, he gets better outside shooting and take to the hole, he will make that guard line really deep.

Thanks in advance Brian, pretty sure Niko and Jovanovich will be here late august for fall semester. Two of the Serbian brothers!

  34. PONO July 7, 2014 7:02 pm

Playhoopsa/Poorboy please do not ruin another blog, why keep changing your username for different boards. Are you trying to hide? This blog is open to people with different opinions and this is not a Gib groupie circle. People should be entitled to their thoughts which promote healthy discussion not a one sided one. If you were objective you would see that St Marys is a much better opportunity for Tyler. Walkons are walkons for a reason, they are guys that are not the complete package yet and have work to do but have potential. In Tyler’s case he could use some muscle but he has proved in a very good prep school league that he can score. In addition Coach Bennett has produced NBA guards in Dellavadova and Mills and NBA hopefuls in Mickey Mc Connell and Stephen Holt. Gib has not produced any all league guards let alone NBA players since he’s been here. If Bennett is showing him the love and giving him an opportunity than one must take it. Walkons are at an disadvantage and need an opportunity. Please don’t scare off more people from this blog too. You only need a couple of comments to get your point across not 100.

  39. Brian McInnis July 8, 2014 12:13 am

Multiple viewpoints are welcome here, both supportive and critical. Harville was a hot topic for a while, pro and con, so I guess the passionate responses weren’t a big surprise. It’ll be interesting to see what he does at SMC, a quality program (albeit one on probation).

  40. poorboy July 8, 2014 12:32 am

    Brian:

I don’t know why, Tyler did not go JC route. He could have developed at good JC or CC and gotten physically and basketball wise more mature. Then, if he had great freshman season, maybe the real full ride as a soph. JC transfer with 3 to play, would have been ideal. Why walkon to Hawaii or St Marys? Even St Marys side, they wonder on their fourm, they have several wakon guards too, and awaiting 3 years to offer a scholarship to deserving one, because of probation limitations. Well it was Harville family and Tyler’s choice, wish him the best. St Marys had pretty good squad, remember, DHC where Christian hit that baseline last few second shot to beat them? That was great game!
Thanks for letting us post and you always will reply or respond, know you are very busy, and we die hard UH MBB fans appreciate. Mahalo Brian, should be interesting to see Fleming, Stepteau and Thomas this week in summer league ball!!

Pocho: should be fun UH sports right.. well not quite that old, however in sixties, approaching that eighth.. you know Hawaiian style, we add two more years to age.. funny kine ! 🙂
That is strange, our other boy, from mainland, matched by post for post, and PONO says nothing on other side? Maybe they related.. ha, ha, I don’t take too seriously.. That other blog, Pocho you should check out, comical, they say same thing, great get, or WHY Bennett go after walkon.. really crazy world.

But hey, if Gib our coach, and still there.. we do our best support his team.. if and when they get everything in order.. and they will.. UH should have maybe Gib’s most talented 3 star and 2 star rated team. If they play Team first, they are going to be good in BWC, no question..
Hey Pocho, I enjoy, your posts all over SA, very Akamai, guy, and NO I am not old geezer yet, retired yes, part time job, yes.. good family indeed.
You take care.. we have to enjoy UH sports, hope they all do well, and we thank WI and Brian for letting both sides express opinions.. great country will wonderful freedom to express!
    🙂
Have a good one Pocho! Get em, reel em in, and go get em!
