UH all in for NCAA summer league

Fans of the annual NCAA Summer League at the Manoa District Park are in for a treat this year. The Hawaii men’s basketball team’s participation is heavy with at least one current player on each of the six teams’ rosters. Not everybody on the 2011-12 team is in, but it’s most of them. There are also several former Rainbow Warriors of recent vintage, including Julian Sensley, Bobby Nash and others.

The league starts up on Thursday, but keep in mind that all of the UH players haven’t arrived yet for the 2011-12 season. Many will be coming in closer to the July 5 start date of the second summer school session, and will join their teams at that point.

My colleague Cindy Luis received a copy of the rosters. Here’s the breakdown:

Army: Gerry Blakes, Hauns Brereton; Central Medical: Vander Joaquim; Electricians Hawaii: Zane Johnson, Trevor Wiseman, Pi‘i Minns; Kainoa Chu*; Grantco Pacific: Davis Rozitis, Bobby Miles; National Fire Protection: Ronnie Stevens, Joston Thomas; Wealth Strategy Partners: Dillon Biggs.

* possible UH walk-on

    Do you happen to have the schedule for the games? Are they always Thursdays?

    Thanks!

    The games will probably be Thursdays and Saturdays with two games starting around 5:30 and 7:30 each nite. The rosters change quite a bit the first few weeks until the teams get settled.

    Chawan,

    They will be primarily on Thursdays and Saturdays at the Manoa District Park gym, two games a day, starting at 6 p.m. There might be some occasional Tuesday games as well.

    Take the Best and use the Rest ? i’ve watched a lot of Summer League Ball and also know there’s little better to improve your games than to be playin’; i used to be concerned that so little defense was played in summer league (although individual players or teams work up schemes and steam to challenge each other) — did that weaken or compromise your game? but after watching Julian, Bobby and Derek Low improve over the seasons (wouldn’t conclude that the games helped but it didn’t hinder their improvement @ U.H. and in the PAC-10) i’d say it’s a good thing;

    i wonder how the L.A. Recruits size up this league ? Does it measure up to their pickup or league games in L.A. ?

    Clearly GIB has endorsed and supports it — esp. WHILE they get their academic skills, feet wet, and head accustomed to college and U.H. / Hawai’i culture; …

    BRIAN — Did you get approval to document the China-Japan Odyssey ? Need Donations ? We WANT the info and perspective ! — This is a Great Story (maybe even BOOK!) about how Gib turned one of the biggest College National turnarounds in less than two full seasons (didn’t have full first year recruiting season);
