‘Bows do media day

Wednesday was media day for the Hawaii men’s basketball team.

Once the Los Angeles Clippers cleared out from their morning session of preseason training camp, UH’s 15-player roster and full coaching staff was on hand for its team picture in the Stan Sheriff Center. Players broke into smaller groups and individually for various media requests, including from yours truly while the excellent Jamm Aquino took photos to be used in our season preview coverage. (I’m in a support role; our Stephen Tsai was on hand to conduct interviews.)

One of the biggest new things this year in regard to the uniforms? Players have their surnames on the back, a first under fourth-year coach Eran Ganot.

UH opens full practices on Saturday.

Here are the guards, from left to right: Eddie Stansberry, Leland Green, Brocke Stepteau, Drew Buggs, Sheriff Drammeh and Huthifah Abdeljawad.

Here’s the wings: Brandon Thomas, Zoar Nedd, Justin Hemsley and Samuta Avea.

And finally, the bigs: Owen Hulland, Jack Purchase, Zigmars Raimo, Mate Colina and Dawson Carper.

Other teams around the country have already begun, because those teams are playing their regular-season opener on the earliest possible day, Nov. 6. That goes for the Rainbow Wahine basketball team, which hosts Pepperdine Nov. 6. The UH men open Nov. 9 against Portland.

Like the bigs ‘size’ that we got going this year, see potential match up problems within the conference. Like our chances to make a run.
