Thanksgiving practice report

By Stephen Tsai on November 27, 2008

Even Thanksgiving could not significantly alter the Warriors’ preparation for Saturday’s game against Washington State. The Warriors practiced for about 90 minutes this morning — 30 minutes shorter than a usual Thursday practice. Instead of dismissing the team for Thanksgiving, the Warriors were fed a training-table meal, then went to team meetings and video sessions. “We’re not wasting a day,” head coach Greg McMackin said. It appears unlikely Kealoha Pilares and Ryan Mouton will be able to play. If they’re […]

Hold your breath

During repair work on the UH athletic complex, the presence of asbestos was detected. An asbestos-removal project for the first floor is set for next week. According to a person familiar with the situation, those working there were told not to work there Monday and Tuesday. Alhough the project will last the entire week, those deemed “essential” are asked to return Wednesday. But employees are understandably wary. One employee is pregnant and in her second trimester. Another employee had been […]

Ralph wins the tickets

By Stephen Tsai on November 25, 2008

Ralph wins the two basketball tickets. If he can’t make it, Jojo is the runner-up. * * * About nine Warriors are expected to earn their degrees next month. That will help the Warriors’ APR number, as well as free up scholarships for grayshirts and recruits. A grayshirt who enrolls in January is allowed to count toward the 2008 recruiting class. * * * Quarterback Tyler Graunke is not practicing while he tends to a “personal matter.” * * * […]

By Stephen Tsai on November 24, 2008

Defensive tackle Nathan Mageo accepted a UH football scholarship last night. Mageo played the past two seasons at New Mexico Military Institute. He was raised in American Samoa, and attended the same high school (Samoana) as Isa‘ako Sopoaga. Mageo, who is 6 feet 3 and 278 pounds, will enroll at UH in January. He will participate in spring training. Mageo is capable of bench pressing 360 pounds and running 40 yards in under 5 seconds. Mageo said he turned down […]

What if …

By Stephen Tsai on November 23, 2008

We never got to see Anthony “A.C.” Carter at his best. During his senior basketball season, he had a subluxed right (shooting) shoulder. Colt Brennan had the best statistical season by a quarterback in NCAA history, in 2006. Thing is, he played that entire season with a lumbar strain that made it difficult to run. For most of his senior year, he played on a sprained ankle that never fully healed. Travis LaBoy had a breakout year at the same […]

Running back commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on November 22, 2008

Running back Jack Sula, who originally signed with Boise State in February but never attended that school, has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. The Carson (Calif.) High graduate will enroll at UH in January, and have five years to play four seasons. He was the subject of an ESPN The Magazine article this year: http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3310788 * * * And might I add, it’s game day. And a rainy one at that. Daniel Libre has been working out, so […]

The recruiting game

By Stephen Tsai on November 21, 2008

In previous years, the Warriors rarely brought in prospects during the season. Most of the visits were scheduled in the three weekends leading to the February signing date. But that’s changed under Greg McMackin, and recruits will be visiting this weekend. The in-season visits allow the prospects to join the team in game preparation. That way if they choose to attend UH, there won’t be any surprises. While some players have been very good hosts — take a bow, Rocky […]

Kahuku safety commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on November 20, 2008

Kahuku safety Kamalani Alo yesterday accepted a UH football scholarship. Alo is 6 feeet 1 1/2 and 200 pounds. He is capable of running 40 yards in under 4.6 seconds. Alo played cornerback last year, and outside linebacker and safety this season. “He can cover ground,” Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. “That’s why we moved him to safety. His speed is phenomenal.” Alo is a multi-skilled member of the track team. He competes in the 100-meter dash, 110 hurdles, 4×100 […]
