About nine Warriors are expected to earn their degrees next month.
That will help the Warriors’ APR number, as well as free up scholarships for grayshirts and recruits.
A grayshirt who enrolls in January is allowed to count toward the 2008 recruiting class.

Quarterback Tyler Graunke is not practicing while he tends to a “personal matter.”

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Great news about the players graduating. It is important for the current players know that their graduation or lack of graduation affects the team in the future even when they are gone. If they don’t finish school, the APR rating drops and it takes away a scholarship from a future player.

  10. Garret November 25, 2008 7:47 am

The Tacoma News Tribune had a short article on the Warriors.

Hawaii roughed up another team from Palouse country last week with a 49-17 rout of the Idaho Vandals. The 49 points were a season high. The victory moved the Warriors to 6-5, one win away from being bowl-eligible. Quarterback Greg Alexander led the way, throwing for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Former Mount Tahoma standout Jameel Dowling had an interception for the Warriors.

  11. wayoutwest November 25, 2008 7:49 am

So does this mean 9 scholies are freed up for the greyshirts/recruits enrolling in January? Or will UH have already hit the max 25 scholies for 2008?

  12. Garret November 25, 2008 7:49 am

Nevada says that they will turn down a bowl spot if they finish 6-6. If too many teams feel that way, there won’t be enough teams to fill all of the bowl games!

Coach Chris Ault said Monday that he has never been a fan of 6-6 teams going to bowl games and added he would likely recommend to athletic director Cary Groth that the team decline any bowl invitation if it is 6-6.

“I’ve said that since they started this (format in 2006),” said Ault, whose team was 6-6 last season and then played in the New Mexico Bowl, losing 23-0 to New Mexico. “I said the same thing last year. It rewards mediocrity.”

Another factor this year is the economy.

“We can’t allow a bowl to cost us money, particularly in these tough economic times,” Groth said. “If for some reason we don’t win (against Louisiana Tech), we’ll sit tight and wait and evaluate any opportunity that comes our way.”

Nevada has gone to three straight bowl games and each time has netted about a $100,000 profit separate from BCS money. But it could be a greater challenge this season to end up in the black.

  13. Garret November 25, 2008 7:51 am

There will be a lot of bowls looking for teams–competition for the Hawaii Bowl for UHs opponent.

In the WAC’s weekly teleconference call Monday, WAC commissioner Karl Benson sounded optimistic that a 6-6 WAC team would have a good shot at getting a bowl invitation. Through this weekend’s games, there are 63 teams that are bowl eligible for 68 spots and 19 more that could become bowl eligible.

Assuming Hawaii (6-5) can beat either Washington State (2-10) or Cincinnati (8-3), both in Honolulu, that would give the WAC six bowl-eligible teams. If Nevada loses Saturday and falls to 6-6, 4-4 WAC, it would be tied for fifth with San Jose State (6-6, 4-4). If the WAC gets five bowl bids, Nevada would appear to have the edge over SJSU because of its victory head to head. Benson, though, said that decision would be up to the prospective bowl.

For example, the Pac-10’s seventh-place team is contracted to go to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, but the conference will have no more than six bowl-eligible teams. The Poinsettia and the WAC made an agreement recently to place a WAC team into the Poinsettia if the Pac-10 cannot.

Benson said there could be as many as eight bowls looking for at-large teams. They are: the Hawaii Bowl, Poinsettia, Emerald, Texas, Papa John’s, Independent and Motor City.

Great game by the Warriors last night.

One thing I noticed was the difference between the 7pm Monday crowd and the 11 pm Monday crowd of last week. The students were once again regulated to the endzone, the older fans were back in their usual seats and over all the crowd just didn’t seem as “intense” as it was as last Monday–despite having more people in the arena. I know it would never happen but it would be so much sweeter if we could get those fans who tend to wear their arena seatbelts all game long, get them up, put students right behind the benches and let them go at it. Let them chant, cheer, heckle, be drunk,–and provide the team with a true home court advantage.

  15. Garret November 25, 2008 7:54 am

    wayoutwest,

The high school players (like Stutzmann) enrolling in January will count towards 2009. The grayshirts enrolling in January can count towards 2008 or 2009. I think that there are 3 or 4 grayshirts in that category, which would free up a good number of scholarships as long as UH has room in the 2008 class.

Colt and others who graduated last December allowed UH the flexibility to count grayshirts to 2007…another example of Colt helping UH!

Another Fantasy Sports article about Bess starting.

The Palm Beach Posts considers undrafted rookie Davone Bess the Dolphins’ “likely” replacement for Greg Camarillo in the starting lineup.
Bess, who played with Colt Brennan at Hawaii, is generously listed 5’10/190 and doesn’t possess premium speed. His snaps on offense are sure to increase, but Miami will probably just end up rotating opposite Ted Ginn based on matchups. Ernest Wilford and Brandon London are also in the mix.

Not liking that report on Pilare’s foot injury.. doesn’t sound very hopeful for Saturday. How’s Mouton? If both are out, it’s going to be significantly more difficult for the Warriors on both ends of the field.

Elimimian needs 39 more tackles? Hopefully he’ll get half of that this Saturday.

I was glad to see Jake in the game last Saturday for those three plays. Are there any other Seniors who haven’t played in front of the home crowd, yet?
If so, we gotta get ’em in there.

Congratulations to all the student athletes receiving their degrees!

Nice to see some Tsaikos at last night’s basketball game. Talk about momentum swings! Up by 10 in the 1st half & then down by 13 in the 2nd. Great to see the team get back in the game down the stretch & get the win in the last seconds (those seconds turned into many minutes)!

There’s lots of talk about possible Hawaii Bowl opponents, but first things first……we GOTTA beat Washington St. on Sat!

    GO WARRIORS!

  36. Bulla November 25, 2008 8:52 am

    mih,

earlier this year, after the UA contract was awarded, i was one of the few who mentioned we should use caution with the UA shoes. it is a fact that New Balance has designed a better football shoe, especially for those athletes with WIDE feet. if you don’t have a solid base, or if your foot is ‘hanging’ over the edge of the shoe….it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when you are going to suffer an injury.

many local kids do not know how it feels to have a properly fitted shoe on their feet. when dealing with linemen, you have to imagine the amount of poundage, force, and stress that is placed on their feet when they’re battling in the trenches. to be battling with something less than 100% stable under your feet, is unacceptable.

many athletes love the look, the ‘weight’ of the UA shoes, but it comes down to form/function.

    just my 2 sense

  37. madeinhawaii November 25, 2008 8:53 am

    Koakane…

I know about that “turning the TV off when the BBall team loses their halftime lead.” In seasons past that was pretty much the story. But this young team has resilience. They bounce back. They don’t quit. They are going to surprise a lot of teams out there as they start to play together and start stringing those runs together. That resilience is going to pay off big time in WAC play against those formidable Officials…nevermind the WAC competition, too!

  38. takoboy November 25, 2008 8:54 am

since most peeps want a pac10 opponent in the HBowl, and since no one wants to see PSU/OSU II, we root for da ducks this weekend in da civil war or what. have a feeling OSU might struggle if quiz rodgers ain’t playing. an oregon victory and 2 ASU victories get us 6 qualified pac10 teams and only 1 bcs team. still possible.

  42. FloridaTed November 25, 2008 9:11 am

    Good morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Right now, all I care about is beating Wazzu, everything will fall in place once that is done. The game against Cinci to me is another bowl game for us, possibly more important than the actual Bowl for next years consideration by the Mainland press.

The BB Team reminds me of the FB Warriors in the first half of the season, lots of new players to come together, chemistry and shooting touch still somewhat missing, but coming around.

Second half of the season they will be quite good, just like the football Warriors. Fleming is still finding his way, once he comes around, watch out.

Awesome last “minute” win by the ‘Bows last night!!!

Heard the Washington State beatwriter on the Bobby Curran Show this morning and I quote him when he says, “we’re (Cougars) probably not as good as Idaho”.

Take that for what it’s worth and I was screaming in my car “BS”. I haven’t seen any Wazzu games but I’ve seen the box scores, yet I cannot believe the worst of the PAC 10 cannot be better than Idaho.

As long as the Warriors aren’t listening, we shall win the day!

  58. Jun Tao November 25, 2008 9:35 am

    Hey BB (Post #14),

I think you made a good point about the crowds. I don’t usually follow the Warrior basketball team but it sounds like having the “students” in the first couple of rows seems to somehow fire up the team as well as the crowd. There is only so much that the cheerleaders and rainbow dancers can do so I would totally agree with opening up at least the first five rows to “open” seating for students.

As we all know, this won’t happen until the “student body” or “die hard” fans voice their opinions to Mr. Athletic Director.

This is a win-win situation for all no matter what the outcome is.

9th place in the Pac-10 is still a Pac-10 team with Pac-10 athletes.

  69. djmitcho November 25, 2008 10:07 am

I know Wazzu is a Pac-10 team, and the Warriors need to take them seriously, but they are really bad. I’ve watched them about 4 times this year and I do think Idaho is a better team. The key to the game will be the front 7 for UH’s D. Lopina, their starting QB, has a problem handling any kind of pressure. If the D can get to him early and lay a couple of hits on him, he will fold fast. He isn’t a running QB like some we have faced this year, so that is something the D won’t have to worry about. I think the key to the whole game is gonna be getting to Lopina early and often.

Goooood Morning from the NorthShore Tsaikos!
Waves are supposed to build and I hope the Aikau can be run this year.

Anyhoo, Bulla you are spot on about having good fitting shoes. I have experienced sprains and toe problems in my limited weekend and after work athletic endeavors. Initially I wanted to do the cheapo route and bought the KMart specials but soon found out why buying more expensive actually cost me less. Didn’t need as much Dr. appointments, x-rays and ointments and tape and braces for the ankle and knees.

Great to hear about the athlethes who will be graduating. I wonder if Brian K. can step this rate up? Hey Brian, can do? 100%?

Great piece about Jayson Rego. I’d like to see more features about the unrecognized, unsung heroes of the athlethic programs. These guy toil everyday and they do shed the blood, sweat, tears and go through the injuries the rest of the team does. These guys really love the game they play. No glory, no pictures in the media, no articles about them but they keep playing the game they love. We do owe them a great big MAHALO!

  77. homey ❤ November 25, 2008 10:20 am

Kekoa – Damn right about the Waipahu view! Can see the Koolau mountain range, the Waianae mountain range, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, the twin towers of Pearl City, and in the earlier days the waving tassles of the sugar cane. Nowadays, all you see is kalamungai trees in every yard. The sound of roosters, the absence of barking dogs, at least 6 cars parked in every garage, family of 20 in a 4-bedroom home…

  79. Kazz November 25, 2008 10:31 am

    djmitcho,

The last time UH faced an opposing QB that couldn’t handle pressure was against LaTech and that kid was HORRIBLE.

Running QBs have not been too much of a factor against our D and that includes that boy scout on steroids Tim Tebow 🙄 .

  80. NorthShoreFan November 25, 2008 10:31 am

    Kazz,
Missed the radio show but me thinks that WSU beatwriter is just trying to blow some smoke. Trying to make like WSU is out of the game.
Remember, they are in the PAC 10 and have PAC 10 athletes. Warriors will have a war on Saturday.

But anyhoo, anybody knows why is it that BCS conferences get to send 6 and or 7 place teams to a bowl game? Money?…kind of missed the explanation of this one…

I’m sure the Warriors will be prepared and focused this Saturday. The coaches will do a good job of reinforcing what Warrior football is all about.

Any recruits coming for a visit?

Do the UA athletes on the commercials i.e. Ray Lewis, Vernon Davis, Julius Jones, Jonathan Vilma, etc. actually use UA cleats during game days or just off field training?

If not, then those shoes are all just hype and style with no substance.

    Bulla –

I coach football and recently bought the “Evade” UA trainer shoes for practices. My feet are slightly wide but size 12 has always been fine for me in any other brand and i’ve never needed to buy special width shoes. The UA shoes seem VERY narrow and don’t feel super secure. It does feel like if you planted hard going sideways that the shoe could give way. Major bummer because I like all their other products. They make a great visor, super comfortable!

Hard to believe that a company like UA that heavily identifies itself with football makes crappy shoes. Hopefully they’re working on fixing this soon.

  97. homey November 25, 2008 11:05 am

J-Dog – I noticed Crabtree from TT wears the UA shoes.

  110. djmitcho November 25, 2008 11:21 am

    NorthShorefan,
The reason the bcs conferences can send six or seven teams, if they are bowl qulified, is cause there are TOO MANY bowl games. There are enough bowl games for 1/2 the D1A teams to go to if they are quilified.

Regarding the Pac-10 and the Hawaii Bowl: I believe Russ Y. said this morning if ASU wins their last two, barring Oregon St. in the Rose Bowl, they (ASU) is a lock for the Hawaii Bowl. Unless I read the current standings wrong, I don’t necessarily agree. I sent them this e-mail. Comments, particularly from ST would be appreciated.

Per your show this morning, maybe the guy who said Arizona could be Hawaii Bowl-bound may be right.

If Arizona State beats both UCLA and Arizona, they will be 6-6 overall AND 5-4 in the conference. This would drop Arizona to 6-6 overall AND 4-5 in the conference.

If Oregon beats OSU and USC ends up in the Rose Bowl, then the top 4 would be USC, OSU, Oregon, and Cal.

The Emerald Bowl has the #5 Pac-10 choice (over the Hawaii Bowl),
Why would they take ASU over Arizona:
    1) better conference finish (5-4 versus 4-5)
    2) ASU beats Arizona head-to-head
    3) ASU ends the season on a 4-game winning streak, while Arizona would end on a 3-game losing streak
    4) other factors- Phoenix metro area much bigger than Tucson metro area, ASU 2X as large enrollment (67,000 in ASU system versus 34,000 in UA system) and presumably larger alumni

Ronnie if UA didn’t do this then I imagined it as well. I think the Advertiser article about the new uniforms earlier this year did mention UA wanting to scan each player’s foot to get them good fitting shoes.

BUT as Bulla pointed out, no sense in having good shoes that fit, but cannot “handle” or support.

I would think that UA would have “mastered” their footwear as word of mouth about how good or bad a product is can be very damaging especially amongst athletes that depend on good equipment.

I was very much on the UA bandwagon (and still am) when the deal was announced as I had some stuff from them to use for myself at the gym and the UH deal just made me go insane over their products. Again, I am not an athlete that “needs” them, but for me the trainer shoes are quite alright. The cleats however I cannot personally comment on as I have never used them.

    Back from the beach…great day!

Rich, The Navy game was played in a monsoon! I saw highlights and there was a reason Navy never threw a pass (aside from SMU’s pitiful run D), the wind and rain was crazy!

Remember before the UTEP game JJ suspended for the rest of the season their top receivers (basically, all the WRs who had any significant number of catches) and some other players…their offense is going to be bad for their next game too.

  147. d1島 November 25, 2008 12:58 pm

    Ralph,

Add #2 son to the list of NB believers. He wore them in HS.
This past season in college, it wasn’t an option because team decided everyone would wear red-trimmed shoes which weren’t available from NB.
NB offers different widths in most of their lines which makes it very suitable for the “luau feet”.

However, I will agree with you that it may be premature to single out the UA shoes as the singular source for the foot injuries the team has had. It’s just something to bring up in post-season evaluations.

  148. djmitcho November 25, 2008 1:00 pm

As far shoes go, when I played in college, we had to buy our own shoes, unless you were a starter or someone who played alot. Despite having the choice of shoes, I wore one of the cheapest brands there was. TAG was the brand name. They were comfortable and they did the job and since I wore ankle braces anyway, I had more than enough support.

  149. Rich2176 November 25, 2008 1:02 pm

Thanks Garret – I would assume there’s a reason for everything. I’m so jealous you’re home. Been swamped the past couple months. Have fun…

  155. Bulla November 25, 2008 1:33 pm

    Ralph
#144, in his junior year, the beast wore NB shoes. however, in his senior year, and currently he is wearing Adidas and finds them to be well suited for his needs.

my reference to the NB shoes was the popularity they have with linemen, who tend to have ‘larger’ feet than other positions. that is why at the Brian Derby camps, the NB shoes were offered for discounts to the players.

i don’t have a preference for any shoe, as long as the shoe is not a contributing factor to further injuries.

    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS

  156. Mrs. A-House November 25, 2008 1:34 pm

    ST –

Nice to have blustery gusts of wind in our valley. Perhaps a fortuitous gust timed with a rapid wide turn in our cul-de-sac will yield a Davone Bess poster falling out of your car trunk/window (wrapped in plastic as rain protection of course) and rolling down our driveway to our front door. Thanking you in advance for the Prairie View A&M / UH basketball tickets. (BTW, did I mention to you what a difficult time I’m having picking out your Christmas gift… 😉 😉 )

  157. madeinhawaii November 25, 2008 1:38 pm

I suppose, though, different positions may demand shoes that are reinforced in different areas. A runner and receiver will probably need shoes that provide additional support similar to what good tennis shoes are designed to do — good flexibility by the toes, padded heels, good arch support, and reinforced sides, especially by the heels to prevent one’s ankle from twisting.

J dog aren’t our warrriors injuries (ankle, high ankle sprain) due to be whacked by the opponent as opposed to being turned while running or planting ones foot for balance, etc. I believe Mouton mentioned that he got hurt when the tackler continued rolling into him to cause his ankle injury

  162. homey November 25, 2008 1:44 pm

Mebbe the gust of wind will be so strong that the poster will fly on over to the Keolu Hills area and land right at my front door! 😆 nah j/k

So, are they gonna make posters for all the former Warriors in the pros? That would be great to see those all over the Athletic Dept. Even some of the “older” guys like Coach Nash & Coach Miano.

  164. homey November 25, 2008 1:47 pm

Whatever the case may be for foot injuries, the advised footwear for the t-gates is steel-toe shoes. 😉

  165. Mrs. A-House November 25, 2008 1:47 pm

    Momo –

Finally we can chat via the Warrior Beat with you and Mrs. Momo. Time flies quickly when you are the story teller at the t-gates. Folks, if you want a glimpse of the good ole’ days of Hawaii growing up on the Windward side of the island or just issues about life, hardships and how to overcome, join Momo (Garret’s Dad) and Mrs. Momo. Not only are these fine people truly “long-time UH fans”, but they are a wealth of knowledge and life’s experiences…some pleasant, some not, but always something from which we can gain. Time well spent…for sure. See you Saturday.

  166. Saturday November 25, 2008 1:50 pm

    See you Mrs. A-House.

  167. Ralph November 25, 2008 1:50 pm

okay stretch at call the coach ask him about UA fb shoes…all players wear them? shoes provided to all players? ankle sprain due to UA shoe construction? or to anyone else attending call the coach- Jason, Myki, SJMacro, uhfan, Midori, please ask. this shoe business has been bounced around since this summer..or maybe ST can put some spin to the UA shoe issue….

  168. Ralph November 25, 2008 1:52 pm

players play with pain, play with injury, but fans think its the players shoes when they don’t do well.. and I hope its the fans the blame the shoes and not the players looking for excuses for their level of play…mind of matter, make it work….

  169. Ralph November 25, 2008 1:56 pm

    #168 mind over matter

  170. Mrs. A-House November 25, 2008 1:57 pm

    jm2375 –

Hi there! Always appreciate your greeting me by name. I’ve learned over the years that it never hurts to drop hints, heavy hints, and maybe additional pressure to reward those who “k/a” (ask me about this acronym later). With ST, however, this noble gentleman of unquestionable fairness and morality is impervious to unsolicited flattery. I know it’s not going to work, BUT it doesn’t hurt for me to practice the art. yuk…yuk

GO WARRIORS! “Mom” can’t be prouder of her brood!! Continue to work hard…focus…play for one another…and just do it!

  171. Ronnie November 25, 2008 1:57 pm

I just saw this on the Washington State scout board:

    http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=137&f=1995&t=3474165
“Lets get this rolling, I Hate Hawaii because: ”

Some of them are really funny. My favorite is “I hate Hawaii because it’s snowing where I live. I really hate them for that.

  172. Olineman November 25, 2008 1:59 pm

Greeeeeat game last night (atleast the end)

  173. homey November 25, 2008 1:59 pm

Ralph – It’s the shoes! Same with golf balls, golf clubs, baseball bats, baseball gloves, boxing gloves, football gloves, soccer balls, volleyballs…players and fans most always blame the equipment.

When an outfielder or infielder misses the ball the player looks at the glove like there is a hole in it. When a receiver drops a pass they look at their hands or gloves. Yep, it’s the equipment.

    😉

  174. Mrs. A-House November 25, 2008 1:59 pm

    Saturday –

You better sign my book. Laters…

  175. NorthShoreFan November 25, 2008 2:03 pm

    djmitcho..mahalo for the info.
Me thinks there are way too many bowl games but I like the exposure the teams get. However, I do not think it is fair for certain conferences to not get invites or appearances. 7 teams from one conference is way too much. Those conferences are on the networks every weekend.
I’d like to see other smaller conferences get exposure. After all there are a lot of NFL pros who came from smaller conferences and the competition is good.
    Anyhoo, my one penny…
HOOOO! last nights game was a butt squeezer huh! Good to see the team learning how to win. They got the talent but now have got to learn how to win together. Team leaders will surface and take control. I’ve watched teams that were really talented but didn’t know how to win.
    GO WARRIORS!

  176. expat November 25, 2008 2:08 pm

LaTech is 5-1 since they lost in Halawa. No real tough games there and the one loss was to Army, but they did beat Utah State and SJSU, something that the Warriors couldn’t do. Incidentally, that transfer QB from Georgia Tech has pretty much been benched since the Hawaii game.

They are alone at 2nd in the conference by the way.

If Nevada beats LaTech and Fresno State beats Boise State there will be a four way tie for 2nd in the conference. Hawaii, Fresno State, Nevada and LaTech will all be at 5-3.

Hawaii can finish no worse than tied for third in the conference.

Most likely BSU beats FSU on the smurf turf. Nevada and LaTech are a toss up but Nevada has a great run defense and LaTech has been favoring the run since we saw them last. It is at LaTech though. I think Nevada pulls this one off, which would leave Hawaii, Nevada, and LaTech all tied for 2nd in the WAC at 5-3.

  177. homey November 25, 2008 2:08 pm

Special thoughts to Graunke as he tends to his personal matters.

  178. lava November 25, 2008 2:12 pm

It sounds like our deal with UA should be that the players can the shoes of their choice if our trainers, in their sole discretion (sounds legal), recommend another shoe for medicinal purposes.

  179. homey November 25, 2008 2:13 pm

I hope Nevada wins at LaTech. Traveling eastward is tough but then again the Warriors always travel eastward.

  180. homey November 25, 2008 2:14 pm

lava – at first I thought they were going to smoke the shoe…sorry, been reading about marijuana in the papers lately.

  181. homey November 25, 2008 2:15 pm

Speaking of marijuana, I haven’t seen a post from Loa in quite awhile.

  182. BowsForever November 25, 2008 2:17 pm

Hope everything’s OK with Graunke. Both he and Funaki seem to have fallen off the depth chart, but they’re still suited up at the games and still seem to be supporting the team from the sidelines.

  183. madeinhawaii November 25, 2008 2:21 pm

    Homey…

I, too, know it is the equipment. When I spend all day out fishing and come home with nothing but broken lines and a sunburn, it’s the equipment. When I play tennis, I’ve seen how big those holes in the strings of my racket can become when I need to put away a ball. When the corners on my frames don’t match up perfectly, it’s definitely the equipment. Some kind of mechanical flaw that shows up every dozen or two frames.

  184. expat November 25, 2008 2:24 pm

    Wazzu

Yeah, they are pretty bad on both sides of the ball. They lost 58-0 to Stanford. Lost by 4 touchdowns to Baylor. They have been outscored this year by almost 400 points– 391 to be exact. UDub, for comparison has been outscored by 263 points.

Lopina has no TD passes this year and 11 INTs. That is not a good ratio. He only had one game in which he didn’t throw an INT. That was against ASU. They didn’t score in that game though. One of thee shutouts. Two other games they just managed a field goal.

The guys need to come out and pound them.

  185. madeinhawaii November 25, 2008 2:28 pm

    expat…

c’mon now.. don’t you feel sorry for Wazzu? I mean, surely you remember our 1997-8 teams and all those teams that were sympathetic to our Warriors, eh?

  186. NorthShoreFan November 25, 2008 2:29 pm

BIG OOOPPSS! post #76 .. Jake Santos

Hope Tyler can get his house in order. I was hoping that Tyler would be the qb at the start of the season and I was a bit disappointed that thngs went haywire for him. But as Bulla noted, Academics before Athletics.

  187. NorthShoreFan November 25, 2008 2:34 pm

Against Wazzu. the Warriors can pound some butt. Win by 40 points. Limit them to 50 yards for the whole game.

THEN AFTER THE GAME … SAY SORRY!

  188. A-House November 25, 2008 2:35 pm

As “good” players chose to attend non-BCS schools and begin to create greater parity amongst all football teams, it may be time to look at what’s out there and, maybe, start the process of identifying some bowl games that can be deleted and allow the money to flow back to the “mid-major” conferences until we attain a true play-off system to name a national champ.

Greater parity means more teams via “won-loss record” will fail to qualify for the current number of bowl games available and this year may be the trend of things to come. Or, is it an “obtuse” year for number of BCS teams failing to qualify? Last year’s national championship game had teams with 2 losses each, but they get to play for the national championship.

If Oregon St wins the PC 10 and UCS goes to a BCS game, the PAC 10 will ge gauranteed millions of dollars in revenue for a conference which does not really need the money. Meanwhile, Boise St and Ball State get to “suck thumbs” being the way the 6 BCS conferences have set their rules.

Also, the Big East and/or ACC will send their “champion” to a BCS game with a less that stellar record with as many as 3 losses.

Perhaps, some one or many someone, should re-evaluate the “criteria” of selecting teams for the BCS ranking and the top 12 teams, regardless of conference affiliation play in BCS games with the top 2 going for the national championship.

Say, why don’t someone agree that the “champs” of the 12 conferences, including the 6 mid-majors, automatically qualify for a BCS Bowl game and they are paired according to “best play the best” to fill the 6 BCS games. Afterall, the only one that counts is for the national championship and that can pair the best 2 teams.

Thus, all teams know that only one team will represent their conference and each team will strive for #1. Afterall, this is the current situation for BCS schools. This will also make recruiting a more level playing field. Who knows, some day the Sun Belt conference will be national champ!!!

  189. BowsForever November 25, 2008 2:52 pm

Graunke had his academic issues, but he was still on the starter track until he got derailed in that brutal OSU game (turns out OSU _was_ a good team). That and he had a throwing hand injury to boot. Not sure why there was never much news about him after that, but hey, he’s still on scholarship and hopefully he’s on course to graduate this year. I’m sure he’s disappointed with how things turned out, but if he graduates, he’s still a success in my book.

Quick comment on the Bess poster. There is the slimmest chance of a snowball surving in Waikiki that the NFL (No Fun League) would let those be sold with identifiable logos. Teams are so possessive of their colors and logos. (Remember when RainbowCliff couldn’t us the Hawaii “H” on his court for the kids?). However, it’s a great motivational reminder for the coaches and players…

    Gotta run…laters gang….

  192. BowsForever November 25, 2008 3:00 pm

It’s too bad Wazzu’s having a lousy year…but it does set up the Warriors nicely for a seventh win as long as they execute around the same level as last week.

Still, given what happened with Washington last season, it’s no time to go into cruise control, even though Wazzu may have a lot less QBs than Washington did.

  193. g-nalo November 25, 2008 3:02 pm

    Hoohiki (220),

Interesting, isn’t it? Amazing, when you think about it. The Warriors really had only two bad losses, San Jose and Utah State. Without those, we would be 8-3 with possibly 11 wins.

Aah, the fine line of winning and losing…..

  231. FloridaTed November 25, 2008 5:55 pm

    Hi KymryKauai!

Mahalo for the cookies! It caused the Tsaiko security team to lock down the Cabana area to keep intruders away from the cookies.

As a couple passed by our Cabana on the way to theirs – got a bit too close, I had to very firmly tell them tostep away from the cookies and they would not be hurt.

Oh btw, I just thought I’d mention that my name is spelled K-E-K-O-A, and would fit nicely on a UH Jersey. It’s so much easier to spell than Alexander or Brennan.

(Koakane ate all da “H” cookies!)

Since the blog is so slow and no announcement from ST about the “package”, I will accept the commitments from Sula & Mageo as an acceptable “package” for the 2009 Warrior recruiting class – class running back and a golden defensive tackle.

However, more news of other recruit commitments are more than welcome!!!

BSU’s Petersen won’t lobby for a spot in the BCS. It is interesting to me that if Oregon State loses to Oregon that the last BCS spot will be between BSU and Ohio State. If Oregon State wins on Saturday, then USC will get that final spot.

Boise State coach Chris Petersen made it clear during his Monday press conference that he doesn’t want to talk about the Bowl Championship Series and he isn’t interested in lobbying on behalf of his undefeated Boise State team.

Right now, Boise State appears to be on the outside looking in at a spot in the big-money, high-prestige BCS. Utah all but locked up a spot with its win against BYU, elbowing Boise State into the at-large pool with USC (potentially) and Ohio State.

Petersen might not be able to do anything about it by voicing his opinion in public. But the Boise State coach isn’t even going to try.

“It’s not what we do,” Petersen said.

I don’t understand what Petersen has to lose by saying, “Hey, watch us play against Fresno State. Decide for yourself if we deserve to be ahead of Utah or get in before Ohio State. We’re proud of our program.”

But that is not Pete’s style. His players weren’t doing much lobbying, either.

  261. Garret November 25, 2008 8:43 pm

If Oregon State wins on Saturday, BSU will either be in their home bowl or in San Diego to play TCU.

The most likely bowl destinations for Boise State remain Boise’s Humanitarian Bowl and the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego.

I’d put the percentages at something like this:

    Humanitarian Bowl: 55 percent

    Poinsettia Bowl: 40 percent

    BCS Bowl: 4 percent

    Other bowl game: 1 percent

McDonald, who I just heard on KTIK, sounds more and more determined to keep the Broncos in Boise. He said in his mind there is not much difference between a 10-2 TCU (Boise State’s likely opponent in the Poinsettia Bowl) and a 7-5 North Carolina (a possibility for BSU in the H-Bowl).

That’d be news to the voters who have TCU in the top 15 and North Carolina out of the polls completely.

Oklahoma State will have about 15,000 empty seats in their stadium for the game vs. Oklahoma!

Fifteen thousand empty seats for the biggest home game of the year.

Sounds like a bad deal for the Oklahoma State football program.

And it might be. Or it might not be.

  264. Garret November 25, 2008 8:48 pm

The seats will be empty because the only way to get a ticket is to buy season tickets. They are still selling season tickets even though there is only one game left! It looks like a season ticket costs $292 and the ticket to Saturday’s game costs more than that from the resellers.

Season tickets are still for sale at the Oklahoma State ticket office.

The policy eliminating single-game Bedlam ticket sales has limited the inventory and driven up the value of the tickets that are available.

TicketsNow.com, a ticket brokerage Web site, had less than 60 tickets remaining Monday afternoon, according to representative Jennifer Swanson.

“That’s a very low supply,” she said. “We have nearly 400 tickets for the Auburn-Alabama game.

“That low number can be an indicator of a high-demand ticket.”

To get their hands on tickets, the brokerages bought season tickets, hoping for a big enough Bedlam game to make the investment worth it.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this happening at Aloha Stadium!

While the Iowa Hawkeyes were scoring at will on the field Saturday night, two fans from the Hawkeye State were scoring elsewhere in the Metrodome.

Police say a man and woman were “having relations” in a bathroom stall as a crowd cheered them on.

Ross M. Walsh, 26, of Linden, Iowa, and Lois K. Feldman, 38, of Carroll, Iowa, were cited for misdemeanor indecent conduct. Walsh was released to his girlfriend and Feldman to her husband, police said.

A review of the tape resulted in criticism for Samson from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

C Samson Satele – Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork abused the Dolphins second-year center. At times Wilfork treated Satele like a rag doll, standing him up then shedding him to the side to make a tackle. You know your boy is a lover of line play, and I saw that AT LEAST three times during Sunday’s loss, and it stifled the running game. To be fair, Wilfork, who contributed four tackles (one for a loss), is an elite player. A once in a lifetime nose tackle (if you get a chance make sure you thank Dave Wannstedt for passing on him during the 2004 draft). But Satele has to do a better job of holding his ground at the point of attack. It’s been a problem all season. I’m beginning to suspect he’s part of the reason the Dolphins struggle to run out of the base formations. When was the last time we saw the Dolphins line up in an I-formation and gain 8 or more yards running up the guy. Expect the Dolphins to address that position in the 2009 draft if Satele doesn’t start to show improvement with his run blocking.

One day, I go onto my lanai, look down from the 18th floor and there in a corner of the parking lot are two Asian kids going at it like rabbits. No one on that floor of the parking lot, but 27 stories of high rise folks getting a free show. I tried to turn away, but just couldn’t do it. It was like a magnet drawing to me the scene, my man. He’ll be playing as a runningback

Hard to imagine that it has been just a year since Sean Taylor died.

The house on Old Cutler Road has been unoccupied since the football star was shot in his bedroom one year ago in the middle of the night. He died defending his fiancée and baby daughter from panicked burglars who assumed he was away at a Washington Redskins game. He was 24.

The house, which Taylor bought so his splintered family could live together — he even painted the rooms in their favorite colors — slipped into foreclosure last month.

”I never went back,” said Jackie Garcia, the woman Taylor planned to marry and the mother of Jacqueline Michelle Marie Taylor, a 2-year-old who has her father’s smile.

Taylor’s loved ones often feel lost without him. He was their center of gravity. This is a story about his influence on them as they try to move on: Garcia, who first met Taylor when they were 15; his father, the police chief who honed Taylor’s talent; his mother, whom he adored; and his half-sister, now a prison guard, whose birthday party led inadvertently to his death.

It was Taylor’s generosity that caused his death. Weeks earlier, he had hosted a birthday party for half-sister Sasha Johnson during which she and Taylor’s half-brother Jamal flashed the $10,000 in cash he had given each of them in gift bags. Johnson took pictures of the money. One of the guests was Jason Scott Mitchell, a friend of Johnson’s boyfriend from Fort Myers. Mitchell was also paid $300 by Taylor during his visit for helping Taylor mow the lawn and clean up the pool deck. Mitchell has been charged in Taylor’s death, as has the uncle of Johnson’s boyfriend.

Penn State isn’t really excited about the prospect of a rematch with Oregon State in the Rose Bowl.

Oregon State can clinch its first Rose Bowl berth in 44 years with a win against Oregon on Saturday in Corvallis — everyone knows that.

But can Oregon State still get to the Rose Bowl with a loss?

The answer, drum roll please, is . . . “yes,” and we’ll explain the tiebreaking procedures after explaining how ticked off the Rose Bowl would be having to stage a rematch game between Oregon State and Penn State.

Penn State already defeated Oregon State once this year, in September, in State College, Pa., by the score of 45-14.

People back East are calling Rose Bowl headquarters to see if Oregon State can somehow be kept out of Pasadena, not understanding a contractual arrangement that has been in place since 1947.

If the Beavers lose and UCLA upsets USC on Dec. 6 — we could give you 9 to 13 reasons why that could happen — the conference race will end in a three-way tie involving Oregon State, Oregon and USC.

In that case, Oregon State goes to the Rose Bowl.

“We can find no possible scenario where it comes out differently,” Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon said.

Kevin Craft’s father is criticizing the UCLA coaches.

“It’s hard for me to watch the physical pounding and the abuse he takes, a lot of times not even getting a chance to go to a second and third progression,” said Tom Craft, an associate head football coach at Mt. San Antonio College. “And then I hear how they want him to go to the second progression. Well, that isn’t even possible at times. It’s unrealistic.

“And then when he gets yelled at, it’s very difficult to watch that as a coach and as a father because I know what he is going through and I am shocked that they aren’t seeing what they are going through.”

The Bruins’ offensive line has been in tatters this season, but Tom Craft doesn’t want to point fingers. The running game has been mostly absent, with Kahlil Bell hobbled by an early-season injury, but Tom Craft prefers to focus on his son.

“He’s been 70 percent of the offense in most cases,” Tom Craft said. “He can perform under stress extremely well and has brought them from behind in two games. He totally got punished in (the Stanford) game and he was very upset because for all his efforts, once in a while a good pat on the back would be good.”

While it would be easy to dismiss Tom Craft’s concerns as those of a meddling parent, he knows football. He has been successful as an architect of offenses at both the community college and Division I levels. He has coached or mentored nine junior-college All-America quarterbacks in his time, including his son last year.

Tom Craft also was a successful offensive coordinator at San Diego State and served as the Aztecs’ head coach from 2002-05. Under Tom Craft’s tutelage in 2007 at Mt. SAC, Kevin Craft threw for 4,231 yards and 44 touchdowns and led the Mounties to the state title game. Kevin Craft earned state player-of-the-year honors.

I hope KITV puts that video online, so I can watch it closely and make sure it’s her.

  291. Garret November 25, 2008 10:45 pm

Article about Long Beach Poly’s dominance. I’m very happy that UH is getting serious interest from recruits there.

For a full century, Poly has been the most successful and most identifiable high school football power in Southern California, a program that has won 17 CIF titles in the sport, 15 of them playing on the highest level of the Southern Section.

The span between their first title (1919) and their most recent (2007) is 88 years. No other program has more than 10.

Mater Dei has nine, and a few of those came in lower divisions before the Monarchs became a local power at the highest level.

The school has sent, by this newspaper’s count, 50 players to the National Football League, presumably more than any high school in the nation, and probably 10 times that to major Division I colleges.

In the 11 seasons between 1997 and 2007, Poly has won six CIF titles, reached the finals two other times and the semifinals twice.

The Jackrabbits are 134-14-1 in that span, and there isn’t a cheap loss in the bunch.

Since 1997, 12 Poly players have been drafted by the NFL, including three players in the 2006 draft – tight end Marcedes Lewis, tackle Winston Justice and defensive back Darnell Bing.

There are six active Poly alums in the NFL – Lewis (Jacksonville), Justice (Philadelphia), Bing (Detroit), linebacker Pago Togafau (Arizona), wide receiver DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia) and linebacker Willie McGinest (Cleveland), who is in his 15 th NFL season.

I would like to plan for maybe a pau hana CC for this place with a $15 buffet spread of fuud to sample, or you may order off of their regular menu. hey Chuy said we could hook up our equipment and “Kanikapila” inside his place if we want!

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

  332. Jack Flash November 26, 2008 7:12 am

    Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

  335. madeinhawaii November 26, 2008 7:44 am

When did Torres grow those extra two inches? I thought he was listed at 5’7″ not 5’9″?

  336. Bulla November 26, 2008 7:45 am

    jack

thanks, i knew that there would be a few Tsaikos listening, haha, to the BC show, but just wanted to mention Vaikune and his efforts, and Sol’s record surpassing Levi Stanley, who was a Defensive Lineman, not a linebacker.

of course, had to throw a shout out to ‘local boyz done good’ in Big Sky Post Season Awards with

Cameron Higgins, Sophomore, Saint Louis, Offensive MVP,1st Team,

Lawai’a Naihe, Senior, Kapaa, OG 1st Team

Cody Nakamura, Junior, Baldwin, TE 2nd Team

Ryan ‘the beast’ Eastman, True Freshman St Louis, DT, Honorable Mention

  337. brew808 November 26, 2008 7:56 am

Major props to Ryan ‘the beast’ Eastman!!! And congratulations to bulla & lynn. 😀

We know it’s just a matter of time before we “drop the ‘a'” and we start referring to snowflake as –
    ~•~~~•~Ryan the BEST Eastman!!!~•~~~•~

    …. even though his papa is still one Ba-ba-booze!!! 😀 😯 😆

    BTW –

    ~•~~~•~~~~•~Good..Morning..Tsaikos..and..Warrior..Nation!!!~•~~~~•~~~•~

To all the sons of Tsaikos,

Props and congrats to making your Papa’s and mama’s proud, as well as all your Tsaiko uncles and aunties.

    Errrr, hi, gang! Hi, ST!

  348. brew808 November 26, 2008 8:53 am

Several of you have warned of complacency and possibly overlooking Wazzu. I have to agree. This is a game that the Warriors must focus on and play their “A” on in our case, their “H” game. Hey – if you like to dream, think of this as an in-conference game in the “PAC-Eleven” vs. the Wazzu Cougars!

    184 expat: November 25th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Wazzu… The guys need to come out and pound them.

    P•O•U•N•D them Wazzu Cougars!!!

So I’m just doing a quick … me … (that’s always weird, writing that) … to say hullo. Stretch keeps hassling me about my not showing up often enough over here, so … ta-da!

    *Tsaikos roll their eyes*

I hope everyone is well. I’ve reeeeally missed hanging out here. I’ve let work and life stuff overtake me and … I need to fix that. Sigh. Anyway …

Princess, kudos for today’s great story on Colt!

    Ralph, congrats!

  357. brew808 November 26, 2008 9:23 am

    Question:

Did Coach Mack ask for “clarification” on the non-call “horse-collar” tackle on Mouton after his awesome fumble return? I thought that was clearly a foul and should have been called, especially since he was injured on the play and could be out for one or more games, in his Sr. season! 😯 😈 😯

  358. Pomai November 26, 2008 9:29 am

    Tom did it work ok??

  359. SteveM November 26, 2008 9:32 am

    Good morning everyone!

Posts # 351 and #352 really jumped out at me… when you consider it is the mysterious and invisible brew808 asking… 😆

BTW, brew, are you going to be back on Oahu this holiday season?

Kekoa: Will definitely have to make you some more cookies! Thanks for the spelling. 🙂

  363. SteveM November 26, 2008 9:47 am

OK, brew808, I guess I’ll have to ask my friends to check. Gotta call in a favor just because the Addahknows and I owe you a cattle/karaoke call or two. Maybe something small, like some secret private karaoke room with them and maybe Esme… 😕

    Cattle Call?

  365. brew808 November 26, 2008 9:55 am

BTW – great column by Ferd Re: APR problems with the spuds and cougars. I’m glad Coach Mack is focussed on the academics and grad progress of his student-athletes. Kudos for the soon-to-be graduates! 😀

  370. al November 26, 2008 10:02 am

    asports….how you doing?

jojo….cattle call the day b4 thanksgiving? aren’t we supposed to be fasting today in preparation for tomw? or do you subscribe to the keep the stomach stretched out theory?

  371. brew808 November 26, 2008 10:04 am

    “simple” for al probably means…. a S P R E A D for others! 😀 😯 😆

I’ve never had the good fortune to meet KymryKauai (actually, that’s true for 95% of the Tsaikos out there…..) but, all I can say is wow! I don’t know if I’d be like koakane and eating dem kookies! They belong right there with chawan_cut’s Lego toys – ARTwork! 😯 😆

  377. A-House November 26, 2008 10:12 am

    Kekoa:

Your #319 post – Jake’s younger brother, incoming freshman and invited walkon, will take his place as the long snapper. He is bigger, 6’4″ and about 270#s, than Jake and some say just as good or better than older bro.

  378. brew808 November 26, 2008 10:12 am

How did Coach ST and his team do last night? Any witnesses? Any video? Should we be checking the u-toob? Any chance his pre-game prep talk included playing spirited, with the heart of lions, and then breaking out into some “King of the Jungle” song and dance….? 😀 😯 😆

  379. brew808 November 26, 2008 10:17 am

Hey – when does hurricane season end in the Eastern Pacific? Sept? Might be an eventful eleven days at sea…. 😆

    Al-

Baik. I am sending you an email shortly.

    Brew-

I agree. “Simple” is a relative term, Kymry’s cookies are truly artwork. Shhhhhh…….don’t mention pho too loudly. Homey might show up just to ask where and when and to remind me that I dissed him twice.

  381. (Jesse) James November 26, 2008 10:19 am

A-House…that’s good to hear. If Jake’s bro is better than him, we’ll be set at long snapper for a while…since Jake is one of the better, if not the best, long snapper I’ve seen at UH…..

  382. brew808 November 26, 2008 10:19 am

    Hey – g- is here! And…. stretch is working?!? 😕 🙄 😯

  383. 3-Prong November 26, 2008 10:22 am

Thank you to THE Princess for her story and videos of Colt.

    Favorite quote from the story:

“He’s so lame,” fellow rookie Fred Davis said. “No, I’m playing. Colt is a cool guy”

Being lame isn’t so bad after all…

  386. Bulla November 26, 2008 10:25 am

How’s does one sign on for the railroad project? I figure that will be WPA work for a lifetime….. I’ve been working on the railroad, all day long… nope, break-time…. 😀 😯 😆

  394. NorthShoreFan November 26, 2008 10:35 am

    Gooood Morning Tsaikos!
Partly sunny, nice breeze, looks to be a good day on the NorthShore. Surf not too good tho.

Suggestion for Coach Mack. Did you see Warren Sapp twinkle toeing around the stage? 294 lbs. and agile like a deer!
Off season training requirement for all UH D-line and especially O-line men.
BALLROOM DANCING 101! Might help with their balance, timing, foot work and keeping them mobile and agile. I think Lynn Swan used to do ballet for his timing, balance and flexibility. (not meaning to turn our guys into dancing stars)

    Anyhoo, over and out….

  395. Nalani November 26, 2008 10:36 am

Hey Gang – Sorry I’ve been out of touch. Been gigging a lot lately. Not sure I’m gonna make it, but Shelton and Kimo will be there this afternoon to watch Pono play basketball (KS JV2 v Damien) @ Damien 530pm. Any former Monarchs out there wanna make a side bet??? Only small kine. Maybe a plate lunch or a yahoo!?

If I don’t make it, it’s because I’m taking our turkeys to Kaneohe to put in the Imu at 5pm.

  396. Bulla November 26, 2008 10:40 am

    northshore fan,

i think today a lot of ‘big’ linemen are leaning towards the Pilates movement. we’re going to resort to the scene from Braveheart with the two horses and the guy tied up in the middle…..haha, nah, j/k.

it’s all about flexibility and power + speed. that is the total package. have to watch out with the local boys and asking them if they want to do Pilates…..they might say, sure…..chicken katsu and beef stew.

    Pilates……not plates….c’mon! 🙂

    Selamat Pagi G-nalo! Apa Kabar?

  400. Jason November 26, 2008 10:46 am

If Luke Ingram is better than Jake, then that’s scary. I’ve seen Jake rated as the best and second-best long snapping prospect in the country this year by two publications who do a good job of scouting (even if I disagree with them a lot).

And Colt — haha, at first I thought, “Wow, he really got big.” Then I realized that he was bundled up. But I can’t really laugh — I’d probably be out there wearing five layers. I’d look like a nose tackle, and probably weigh that much considering all the clothing. 😀

chawan_cut: Now that it’s been established that “lame” is the new “cool,” don’t be bringing your entourage of women to the UH basketball games. And stay away from the railing, lest the cheerleaders and Rainbow Dancers try to grab you and take you home. 😯

Gotta go check out my fridge…O&O

  408. brew808 November 26, 2008 10:57 am

Yo Jason – I was never ever able to check my solution to your math challenge. I got a “corrupted/damaged file” error. I think it was pretty obvious what the trend was. Both MIH & jm3580892370940928.3948 spotted the odd 12 and wondered about some power law. I keyed on the 2048 (nth power or 2), the 121, 1000 and game over. Right? 😀

    1 = 1^12
    2048 = 2^11
    59049 = 3^10
    262144 = 4^9
    390625 = 5^8
    279936 = 6^7
    117649 = 7^6
    32768 = 8^5
    6561 = 9^4
    1000 = 10^3
    121 = 11^2
    12 = 12^1
    😀

    Just a little off-topic vent…

Today, I read one of the “lamest” quotes I’ve ever seen. It was in an article about how an additional Yorba Linda reservoir was approved and paid for but never built. Not a big deal except that of the 19 homes damaged or destroyed in one neighborhood, “at least five burned because fire hydrants went dry, fire fighters said.” There are 100 homes in the neighborhood. That means that at least 5% of the neighborhood was destroyed because building the reservoir “was stalled over the [past 30] years by indecision among residential developers, competing water district projects and negotiations with environmentalists.”

Ready for the quote? Here it is…
“It was a problem of too much fire, not a problem of not enough water,” said water district spokesman Laer Pearce.

    WHAT!?!?!

  433. Pauoa Boy November 26, 2008 12:10 pm

    Yups props to Princess Leila…
Mahalo for keeping us in touch with bruddah Colt. Always good to hear of him, hopefully one day when his playing career is over he going run for Govenor for the State of Hawaii!

In the mean time I hope Colt gets an opportunity to play next season if not with the Skins then someplace else.
