Kahuku safety commits to UH

Kahuku safety Kamalani Alo yesterday accepted a UH football scholarship.
Alo is 6 feeet 1 1/2 and 200 pounds.
He is capable of running 40 yards in under 4.6 seconds.
Alo played cornerback last year, and outside linebacker and safety this season.
“He can cover ground,” Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. “That’s why we moved him to safety. His speed is phenomenal.”
Alo is a multi-skilled member of the track team. He competes in the 100-meter dash, 110 hurdles, 4×100 relay, shot put and discus.
He is a sweeper in soccer.
“He’s got great ability, and it’s all based on his work ethic,” Torres said. “He’s not afraid to train.”

Nocturnal Urinal is a great name for a band. Maybe a Spinal Tap side project.

It’s decision time: stop grading and go to sleep, or just stay up until it’s time to go to practice. Wish now that I hadn’t drank that Monster.

  36. Bulla November 20, 2008 3:15 am

  62. Garret November 20, 2008 6:08 am

Welcome to the Warriors Kamalani Alo!

  63. Garret November 20, 2008 6:14 am

    Mike,

I think my longest post string wasn’t about free play links–I think it was when I was on a business trip in DC and found a ton of articles in 2007 about the Warriors who had been drafted by the NFL or were in NFL camps (Samson, Ikaika, Nate, etc.).

  64. Garret November 20, 2008 6:16 am

Article about Idaho’s lack of depth…that should be good for the Warriors, especially as the game goes along.

UI’s depleted secondary and an injury to Eddie Williams, perhaps the team’s best athlete, provided proof positive Saturday that the Great Vandal Rebuilding Project is still far from complete. As usual, undisciplined play was a major contributor, too.

UI racked up more penalties and penalty yards than TTFB, but the real story was the timing of them. The Vandals continued their uncanny knack for stupid miscues and/or unruly behavior in the most inopportune moments.

TTFB turned the ball over once. On the flip side, UI did it up right, losing a fumble that was run back for a touchdown and throwing two interceptions in its own territory. Now THAT’S how to ruin momentum. I hope football teams everywhere are taking notes.

A 79-yard punt return for a touchdown by Kyle Wilson gave TTFB its first lead and broke UI’s spirits — an easy thing to do to this fragile, oft-ridiculed bunch. Perhaps most demoralizing was that the Vandals had ample opportunities to tackle Wilson, if not for the impromptu “poor tackling clinic” they graciously put on. How nice of them to show their opponents what not to do.

With their best defensive player, safety Shiloh Keo, out for the season with an injury and their two starting cornerbacks suspended, UI’s secondary was a disaster waiting to happen. The coaches on both sides knew it, so one can only imagine how Vandal head coach Robb Akey and his assistants felt trying to prepare a game plan to stop a team that leans heavily on its creative, super-efficient air attack. Talk about a horror movie waiting to be written.

  65. Garret November 20, 2008 6:17 am

This University of Idaho graduate sure doesn’t seem to respect UH much in his article.

The Vandals have an opportunity to end this disappointing season well with a road victory against Hawaii this Saturday. The Warriors are a so-so Western Athletic Conference team, or a poor Football Bowl Subdivision team — it means the same thing.

UH’s offense isn’t even close to what it has been in recent years: With big-time quarterback Colt Brennan and his stable of NFL-ready receivers gone, the team has managed just 14 touchdown passes while tossing 19 interceptions. And the team’s defense isn’t any better.

  66. Garret November 20, 2008 6:18 am

Quote from Bess about the importance of chemistry on offense.

“Without chemistry, it’s impossible to go out and perform at a high level in any circumstances when it comes to the passing game,” receiver Davone Bess said. “The quarterback has to understand you, from your speed, to your catching ability, down to knowing what you’re thinking inside-out, and vice versa.”

  67. Garret November 20, 2008 6:20 am

The New England media wrote about Bess being a returner against the Patriots.

When it comes to kick returns, youngsters Ted Ginn, Jr and Davone Bess split duties. Despite the bad numbers, they’ve had some good moments — earlier in the season against Seattle, Ginn had a 100-yard return called back because of a holding penalty. Ginn has handled the bulk of the kick returns the last five weeks, including three returns for a total of 53 yards but no touchdowns last week against the Raiders.

According to Izzo, they have two different return styles.

“Ginn has exceptional speed, whereas Bess is also fast, but a little quicker, a bit more of an upfield returner. Ginn is more of a run to daylight guy who gets to the edge,” Izzo said. “We’ve seen Ginn take it up the middle for big yardage as well.”

  68. Garret November 20, 2008 6:21 am

Another article about Bess’ return stats this season.

Bess, a rookie from Hawaii, is ranked 22nd in the NFL with a 22.2-yard average on 16 returns, with a long of 32 yards. Ginn is 37th out of 38 with a 20.8 average and a long of 41 yards.

    COLT WATCH!
    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/82875-jason-campbell-vs-colt-brennan-v2

    by Travis Evans (Contributor)

    November 17, 2008
NFL, Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan, Preview/Prediction

This is my second article about Brennan and Campbell. Campbell has made me sway his way a little more, but Brennan holds the advantage 67 percent—33 percent over Campbell.
    Brennan
    1. Was the top or second QB in draft but then had a bad game vs. Georgia, who just publicly stated the objective was to GET BRENNAN.
    2. I think Brennan will flourish under this offense because of his timing and release.
    3. He is more mobile and isn’t afraid to try and fit the ball into that tight spot. (All great QBs have had this attribute.)
    4. The comparisons to the greats are what Brennan got but Campbell has got zip, zodda, zilch.
    5. Broke record.
    6. Preseason may just be practice but that spiral…ugh I was drooling.
    7. Reminds me of a no dog fighting Mike Vick.
    8. THE MOST ACCURATE QB IN THE COMBINE IN RECENT YEARS ONLY MISSED ONE PASS AND IT WAS A DROP
    Campbell
    1. Had an OK year so far but just hasn’t proven to me he is the future.
    2. He can’t throw the deep ball for anything. Moss had a sure TD but it was under thrown and he had to adjust or drop it.
    3. Less mobile and slower thinker.
    4. May have a stronger arm.
    5. Has chemistry.
    6. Zorn is the ingredient to success, not him.

Therefore I give the advantage to Brennan. Plus it may have been preseason, but in the near future you will hear Brennan to Moss for a TD/ Brennan to Thomas/Kelly for TD.

  73. A-House November 20, 2008 6:50 am

KAMALANI ALO, WELCOME TO THE WARRIOR FAMILY AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR STELLA CARRER AT UH.

    Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Looks like the recruiting train just keeps on rolling. The success we’re having sofar has never been seen before at UH.

I have the feeling that quite a few of those DB’s will become linebackers in the future. Let’s keep it humming.

    pretty good list, thx MIH

don’t know if i heard it right but sure sounded on CTC on tuesday that Nobriga was the guy coach was talking about when saying something to the tune of certain player’s dad is 99.9% sure he wants his son to come to Hawaii but just wnats him to take all his visits first. Coach Mac went on to say that’s fine but at a certain point, you’re gonna have to get off the fence and make a firm committment or we’re gonna have to move on. Hope all the soft commits make it a hard commit as soon as possible.

    g’morning gangeeez,

ok, that was a valiant try earlier, but no worries beef curries….it was fun. i will no way ever in this life match up to the efforts of our very own Garret, haha.

mahalo for all the well wishes, going to Ogden to get a victory for those Wildcats. 4 years ago, this team had 1 win, this season they should be 10-2 with losses to #7 Utah, and UH….. not too shabby.

Playoffs, here we come…..followed by Bulla and Lyn’s weekly car wash at Waialae Chevron to offset the expenditures…..haha. Was it worth it….bet your arse….would we do it again….in a nano second!

    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS (X2)

I was watching the Oct. Kahuku vs. Farrington regular season game on the OC16 sports website and it looks like Alo has good speed and quickness off the edge. He is also adept at man coverage. Yep, he’d be a good SS or OLB.

    GO WARRIORS

  122. Bulla November 20, 2008 12:34 pm

    to all the tsaiko ohana,

mahalo for the kind words and good wishes; whew, i think my middle name should be Delta by now…..what the heck, you only go once…..let it ride.

final season game, a big win would be nothing short of awesome for the Wildcats, but here’s a story only a father would appreciate, and a nutz one like me at that.

Coach: hey bulla, did ryan talk to you about his shoulder?
Bulla: yeah, he said he heard a little pop and went to see the trainer.

Coach: well, that pop he heard was his left shoulder separating at practice…..
    Bulla: how bad is it?
Coach: not bad, we put it back in place and he’ll be fine by game time

Bulla: So what did ryan tell you about the shoulder coach?
Coach: your son is nutz, he told me the trainer said that he separated his left shoulder….but he told the trainer ‘i still have my right one though….right?’

Bulla: that’s my son, he has a high threshold for pain, it scares me
Coach: i know, the trainer said he could still do the rotation exercises with the shoulder separated, and when asked if it hurt, Ryan told the trainer, ‘pain is a concept of the mind, and i am not allowing myself to think of pain right now….’ so the trainer told him if it felt weird, and ryan told the trainer, ‘if i say it feels weird, will you keep me out of the game on Saturday?’

Coach: the trainer got pissed and said, ‘Eastman, you separated your shoulder, now let’s get to work on it, and no i won’t keep you out of the game on saturday

Ryan: thanks, i don’t have to use my left side, i can favor my right and still play if i have to….and can i get 2 cortisone shots, i don’t want to feel anything til after the game…shoot man, it’s history!!!

    now that was funny.

  123. Rob25 November 20, 2008 12:40 pm

Bulla – If only all men could have that threshold for pain…then all of us women could stop giving birth and hand that duty over to the men!

    Bulla,
Great story. I can well imagine Ryan saying those things.
Having watched him battle in the trenches since Frosh Football, it always amazes me how he keeps battling from kick-off thru final whistle. The Timex Man! (Don’t think the young ‘uns will understand that one.)

I hope both of you enjoy your trip. We’re envious, although the good news for us is that #2 son comes back in 4 days! 😀
Safe passage; see you when you get back!

Homey ~ Mebbe you should tell Rob$25 the truth about the fried noodles. I don’t think she realizes that there are sliced animal parts and questionable sliced fishy cake stuff in there for flavor.

Jojo is bringing some exotic squid stuff too! MMMmmmMMM!

Homes ~ A Korean friend once made us some Oyster Kim Chee. I’m still trying to find someone who can duplicate that recipe. The raw oyster poke you brought to the t-gate was the closest I’ve tasted to date.

Betty?…Is there a chance you would know?

  131. Rob25 November 20, 2008 1:11 pm

OK so this morning on 1500 Russell Yamanoha claims that the MWC is a better conference than the WAC. I will agree that maybe this year they are a better football conference, but the bottom of their conference isn’t much better than the WAC if at all.

He was getting on my nerves as I was driving in. He looks down at Hawaii and the WAC for whatever reasons. I can’t believe how negative he is about Hawaii…and he’s the color guy! 👿

Rob DeMello was right about if all those teams that left the WAC had stayed we would be a pretty powerful conference. Hawaii is just never gonna get a break because of our geographical disadvantage.

will jojo actually show up, you know it’s supposed to be rainy on saturday.

  133. Rob25 November 20, 2008 1:16 pm

    Hi Kekoa!

For the record, I don’t have a problem with all animal parts. I have a problem with eating those closest to the rear end (because pork butt isn’t actually from the pig’s butt), the feet, the digestive system and internal organs. I’m all for eating their muscles and skin! For some inexplicable reason, I don’t have a problem eating fish cake (kamaboko). Don’t know why. Don’t like chocolate and milk but love chocolate milk and chocolate ice cream. Go figure!

  134. Rob25 November 20, 2008 1:17 pm

    Rob25:

If Russell is SOOOOOOOOO negative about UH, will we see a replacement for him next year? Maybe, he should apply for a position with the MWC.

I cannot phantom UH asking K-5 to keep him on the job. Didn’t this happen to another sports person who did something some time back?

Just for your info, I called Shirokiya and electronics manger said Toshiba
no longer makes DVD/VCR recorder players.

  138. Garret November 20, 2008 1:34 pm

The Dallas Morning News seems to think like ST about who the MWC would invite to join them.

Seems like the Mountain West Conference would like nothing more than to add a 10th team to enhance its growing reputation as a football powerhouse.

Boise State, home of the Smurf Turf, is being touted as a logical choice because of geography and its status as one of college football’s top teams. A Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma in 2007 vaulted the Broncos into the national consciousness.

Yet SMU, believe it or not, is also being thrown in the expansion mix, largely due to its proximity to TCU and of course, being in the fifth largest TV market in the nation.

  139. Garret November 20, 2008 1:37 pm

It appears that BYU is behind the push to invite BSU to the MWC. I remember last year BSU’s President said that he wrote to each MWC President to ask them to invite BSU to the MWC and the BSU President said that only BYU’s President wrote back to him. That makes this news not too surprising, I guess.

It is interesting to me that they *confirmed* that a MWC school sent a letter to BSU’s President. So, that part is definitely not just a rumor.

A Boise Broadcaster that used to work with me (J Bates, does some TV and radio in B-town) related the story of Boise St. joining the Mountain West conference. The early word was an official invitation had been said. Turns out the only thing anyone would confirm is that a MWC school (Bates says it was BYU) sent a letter to the Boise St. President with the idea of brining up the Broncos during next summers meetings…suggesting to the league that Boise St. be admitted.

  140. Garret November 20, 2008 1:39 pm

Interesting that BSU has done very well against the top of the MWC. They are undefeated against BYU (I wish UH could say that!) and Utah only beat them when BSU was in D-IAA.

A couple of thoughts on this:
First, adding Boise St. is only a benefit from a competitive standpoint. They bring nothing in terms of a TV market (well below 100) and little to nothing in terms of recruiting. (When was the last time a blue chipper came out of Idaho). These are both thing’s that TCU DID bring to the Mountain West, which is why some believe SMU would be the next logical choice. Can’t get enough of those Texas school.

Second, say what you want about their competition level, but the fact is, they have owned BYU and Utah in football. The Cougars and Utes are a combined 2-6 vs. the Broncos! BYU has never beat them, and the Utes only beat them twice way back in the 80’s.

Sure, off the field the only thing they bring to the Mountain West is potatoes, but on the field? The Mountain West would have 2 of the three teams that have busted into the BCS.

  142. Rob25 November 20, 2008 1:43 pm

    A-House

Maybe I am too much of a homer. I don’t think that the local sports people have to always shine a positive light on UH, I just think that they don’t always have to knock them…just like people do the Dept of Ed in this state.

I always feel like a student is going to be successful wherever they are based on their desire and work to do well in school. Yes, there are other factors like opportunities and facilities, etc but many students flourish under less than ideal circumstances.

UH is not a bad school and too many local people are always disrespecting it. UH has many wonderful graduates. Too bad more of them don’t support the athletic programs.

OK, I’m stepping off the box. It was just that Russell seems to sound like Jeff Portnoy at times.

I think people are entitled to say whatever they wish to say as long as they have proper knowledge of the entire situation.
There are a lot of things that happen that aren’t known to the general public but are easily accessible to certain people. It helps to go to practice; it helps even more to ask questions.

A-House, what exactly are you looking for? I read your post from the other day and I couldn’t quite tell if you were looking for a VHS vcr that you could use to play your tapes into your dvd recorder or if you were looking for a new dvd recorder because your laser died out. I know you were concerned because the new models couldn’t accept a straight coaxial connection.

Anyway, depending upon what you are looking for, I may have some ideas. For me, I use a dvd recorder with a hard drive to record the games and then edit out the commercials before I burn to disc. Unfortunately, they no longer manufacture dvd recorders with built in hard drives.

    I’m not sure what

That would be surprising. IMHO anyway.

  186. XxFaithxX November 20, 2008 3:21 pm

D1Shima: I would not be surprised, just look at some of the HS players that have offered. The teammate(s) and his neighbors of the 4th ranked HS prospect in the country. They do have possible D1 skills, but it just smells fishy to me…/shrug Ima a WARRIOR HOMER…sorry.

Now I know some may feel that I am looking into things too much, but this kind of recruiting happens all the time. Look at how many prospects that UH recruits too. A lot of them from the same team and or a relative somehow connected to UH. D1 football is a BUSINESS, plain and simple. Coaches don’t get hired for the amount of players that they graduate, they get hired for how many wins and accolades they can get. You get the players any way you can and all the whole try to make yourself look wholesome….sad, but true.

How about them basketball Bows? I read that they are practicing their jumpers to beat the zone defense. How about more practice in breaking down a defense with screens, movement, passing, and taking the ball to the hoop. Oops, sorry, the homey coaching devil appeared on my left shoulder. Back to reality…

  207. Mad Dog November 20, 2008 3:52 pm

I don’t mind if Nevada takes down Boise. I have a respectful dislike for the Smurfs because they are always good. Sort of like the BYU days. I don’t care if Nevada ruins the WAC’s BCS money.

By the way, Georgia Tech scored on an interception. Georgia Tech 10, Miami 0. Second Quarter, 13:28

  208. al November 20, 2008 3:53 pm

homey…..bball needs to play more three man or triangle offense. our 3-4-5 guys could out quick most teams i think.

it is obvious we didn’t recruit any pure shooters. our best outside shot is our center.

farfetched but, maybe their best shooter is beau albrechtson of kaimuki.

t-boy…..check the sidelines this weekend. interestingly, cottonwood hs of utah and lb poly will play their playoff games on friday(tomw). which means some of them may be tripping this weekend. especially if mack wants a commitment by this weekend. let’s see they could fly in late friday or early saturday and do the visit and fly back sunday or monday.

bring your binocs to the game.

  212. homey ⌀ November 20, 2008 3:59 pm

al – Lakers offense? No use be quick if you can’t beat your man off of the dribble drive.

takoboy – Alo does line up like an outside linebacker on the line of scrimmage on most plays. In the spread he covers the slotback.

Mad Dog – Yeah, I’d like to see Nevada run wild over Boise.

thanx guyz will bring da binocs this weekend, hope to see mckay, GDL, and Tepa on the field, and hope even more for good news next week from them. do we have a recruit from cottonwood…

  215. Rob25 November 20, 2008 4:08 pm

Don’t care about the BCS money if it goes through Boise.

Let the Wolfpack take the ponies down!

I would like to see the BB team take it to the hoop. They were getting very little penetration in the two games that I saw. And what is with BB players that don’t want to take a shot? We can’t score if you don’t get the ball somewhere near the hoop.

homey – Be careful what you wish for. Asports could probably take you in a game of hoops and if she didn’t, she would get you with her leadfoot or her darts.

  216. cheepono November 20, 2008 4:10 pm

is there any substance to the hasiak rumors?
i mean it’s one thing that he possibly de-committed from ucla…

but if i recall correctly, we were never in the running for his service. i would be ecstatic if we did land him, but at the same time i can’t remember a time when we were even a consideration.

  217. homey ⌀ November 20, 2008 4:10 pm

  218. homey ⌀ November 20, 2008 4:13 pm

cheepono – Hasiak is a very good player. If he changes his mind and becomes a Warrior more power to him. If not, then good luck to him at his future school.

  219. al November 20, 2008 4:18 pm

all is fair in love, war, and recruiting.

got to remember these are young men barely 17-18 who are trying to make a life changing decision. anything can happen.

like the old standard (song that is), “what a difference a day makes…….”

if a few more blue chip local boys do an about face and accept the warrior program, this will be the heaviest local recruiting year ever. and it will, well it already has, spell trouble for all the would be mainland poachers like oregon state, etc in the future.

the man of his word did in fact be true to his early commitment to the local kids first.

coach mack attack era is on.

    …nuff said.

  220. Stephen Tsai November 20, 2008 4:21 pm

Sorry, took a nap, and the next thing I know it’s almost 4 p.m.
On the target list: Two OLs, two offensive players (is that vague enough?), two defensive players (more vagueness) and a cornerback.
They also are after a punter and kicker, but, at this time, those two will be walk-ons.
One of the grayshirts might have to come in the fall to meet certain requirements.

  221. Rob25 November 20, 2008 4:23 pm

homey – I don’t really know much about BB, but I know enough from watching Shaq drive it inside to know that you can get a lot of fouls called on the other team that way. It seems like this year’s team is much better as a team with their free throws.

I also know our “big man” from Lithuania shoots it long distance but maybe Sasha should wait to shoot unconscious threes when he finds his stroke in a game. I want to see Nitoto shoot the ball more!

  222. Stephen Tsai November 20, 2008 4:23 pm

Jesse Williams is supposed to come in January, but there might be a problem with the deadline. I think mid-years needed to declare their availability by late October. I know Billy Ray Stutzmann made the deadline.

thanks ST. i knew i couldn’t wait until next week.

would one of those olinemen and one of those defensive persons have at least one same initial?

i am thinking running back but now two makes it interesting. if we were after only one yes for sure the aforementioned. now two, so that means that here is one who you just can’t pass up because he is soooo good.

….(smack, smack, smack….as in licking my chops)

  227. al November 20, 2008 4:37 pm

rob25…..i think we are better served with nitoto dishing the ball and playing tough defense.

the past two years sasha shot the ball with not too much efficiency so that hasn’t gotten worse this year.

we have a team who would do well running and taking it to the hoop as often as we can rather setting up a perimeter shot. the fast break should be their main weapon and to do that they have to play tough defense and out rebound the opponent.

  231. ryan November 20, 2008 4:42 pm

Are both Olinemen JC’s or is one of them a high school kid?

  232. Rob25 November 20, 2008 4:55 pm

al – but Nitoto isn’t a true point guard and he shoots pretty well. If only we could get Sasha to be under control and pass better. I like his energy though. Once Hiram gets healthy and in playing shape I would like to see Nitoto move back to his more natural position.

I agree about taking the game inside. They shoot free throws okay which is why I think that they need to be inside. I see a lot of standing around when they are on offense and nobody boxing out when they are under the basket. The rebounding was almost nonexistent a lot of the time.

  233. Rob25 November 20, 2008 4:57 pm

See ya later…gotta hit the road.

  234. al November 20, 2008 5:02 pm

okay…..i agree that a healthy hiram thompson may be the answer at point guard. sasha plays hard, but, the point needs to play error free and have great court vision. nitoto was recruited as point guard. he will score more from driving the lane (under control) then anything else.

    just my opinion though.

  235. cheepono November 20, 2008 5:05 pm

so we’re looking at 7 more recruits still yet? that’s awesome to hear.
    2 ol
    2 off. skill players
    2 def. players
    1 cb

seems like that’s gonna take a lot of shuffling around regarding the #’s situation. i have 100% confidence mack and his staff will get the job done. go get em!

  236. al November 20, 2008 5:23 pm

cheepono….i think one of the two defensive players is a cb.

it will be more interesting to see how we juggle all these recruits. seems like we may go over the limit, which will mean a couple of greyshirts. which for some would do them well. i always thought that if jc guy can come in and greyshirt or come in early as in december then they would have a spring under their belt to adjust to the bigger campus, academics, and speed of the game.

two more weekends and we should have them all under the roof.

  237. al November 20, 2008 5:26 pm

not sure if this was brought up before….but, losing 32 seniors this year is good for recruiting.

losing at least a third of the roster creates many openings on all sides of the line of scrimmage. in particular it should be enticing for some highly regarded jc players.

  238. Mad Dog November 20, 2008 5:27 pm

Time for me to sneak away from work to get my wife a birthday present. Last update from me: Georgia Tech 34, Miami 10 Third quarter 4:08

Miami is having a difficult time stopping Paul Johnson’s spread option attack. Georgia Tech has over 360 yards rushing so far. To be a success, the spread option requires a good defense to hold down the opposition. Georgia Tech’s defense is harassing the Miami QB enough to affect their passing game.

  239. al November 20, 2008 5:27 pm

one significant feature on our new recruits is that they all can run!
    speed and more speed.

oh, and some really large lineman.

  240. al November 20, 2008 5:32 pm

    who’s the miami qb? marve?

i don’t get it with miami, notre dame, washington, et al. they recruit year after year the best players and yet……..

  241. Maverick November 20, 2008 5:37 pm

    Al-
I think we both have desires to see Mr. Marve rise above to stardom. And I still envision him wearing a Warrior uniform, but that is wasted energy.
He is a very good QB, wtih a program that will catch up to him soon.
He needs one more year ( and hopefully will grasp it) to excel past the pace of Southern ball.

  247. recruit me! November 20, 2008 6:17 pm

jesse williams will be a project. we will probably see him in a few years.
billy stutz coming in the spring is great news. other sight mentioned he does not look that fast!! WHAT.. ran a 10.9 as a soph. was injured last track season but was the 100, 200m champ as a soph. also read that he ran a 4.48 (yes that is sub 4.5) at a combine on the mainland.
think about that , bess was 4.67 stutzman is sub 4.5!
then we have Kalua Noa coming in who is fast and athletic. and corey’s slot who is also a 4.5 guy.
    SPEED KILLS BABY.

Highly regarded JC OL listing UH as one of their “schools of interest” include:

Eric Sproal, Santa Ana JC, Santa Ana, CA, 6-4.5/300

Christian Browne-Frazier, Compton JC, Compton, CA, 6-3/286

So…. is AZ or CO considered “middle of the country”? Or does it have to be Kansas? 😕 😯 😆

  253. Jason November 20, 2008 6:48 pm

Rob25: IDK, it looks to me like Nitoto doesn’t have confidence in his outside shot. And I’m with al, I think he’s more of a drive-to-the-basket scorer. His jump shot is awfully inconsistent.

As for the offense, I still say we gotta be patient. It’s just like the run and shoot, it’s a complicated offense. But yeah, we do need to do certain things better. Screens are awful, and the timing on the cuts are off. But slowly, you can tell they are getting better.

  254. brew808 November 20, 2008 7:02 pm

    ST:

Are you under a “gag order” from Coach Mack not to reveal the names of any recruit who will be visiting UH this weekend?

Sure sounds like it with all the generalities you are feeding us so we go crazy with anticipation.

Some day, tell Pauoa Boy and me why UH did not recruit Pauoa Boy’s neighbor across the street or did he not want to come to UH?

With your OL comments, it appears that the Kapolei player is not included in the mix.

WR from middle of the country sounds like a Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska or Missouri land player. Or, are you saying middle of Oahu?

Can you tell us “how good he is” without breaking your promise to Coach Mack? No names, initials, etc. Just facts, thank you!

  288. Stretch November 20, 2008 8:54 pm

    eastside is dry right now.

not looking forward to the plane ride tomorrow morning. it gets a little bumpy riding through the rain and makes it hard to drink coffee and read the Advertiser.

  289. Garret November 20, 2008 8:54 pm

My kids haven’t experienced rain for a long time, so they will probably be in for a surprise when we’re in Hawaii!

  290. Garret November 20, 2008 8:56 pm

I really respect Chad Pennington’s work ethic, and how he gets his teammates on offense to work hard too.

For those wondering if rookie quarterback Chad Henne and second-year vet John Beck are paying attention, let me calm your anxiety and reveal that they are.

Beck said he and Henne actually get homework assignments from Pennington and gladly break down whatever game film he asks for.

I’ve heard of players-only meetings, but that usually happens when a team is facing some kind of drama, and needs to air it out privately. But Pennington holds them weekly, THREE TIMES A WEEK, for at least an hour a session.

The offensive players say it’s those meetings which have transformed the offense, allowing the Dolphins to become one of the NFL’s most efficient offenses this season. Believe it or not, the Dolphins are ranked 8th in total yards, and 7th in yards per play.

“He asks us what are we looking at. We give him feedback,” receiver Davone Bess said. ” ‘What do you like, what do you see, how are you running this route.’ Then he tells us his side, what he thinks we should do. It’s give and take.”

  291. Garret November 20, 2008 8:58 pm

Notre Dame’s compliance guy had to tell their students to cancel the plans they had to try to help recruit Manti.

Reporting from Chicago — Manti Te’o, a Honolulu native and a prized linebacker recruit in the Class of 2009, will make a very long trip to visit Notre Dame this weekend.

Notre Dame had to take action this week to ensure Te’o could make a return trip if he so chooses.

Some Notre Dame students hatched a plan to distribute about 8,000 leis outside Notre Dame Stadium at Saturday’s game against Syracuse in honor of Te’o’s visit, posting that plan on an Irish fan website and even campaigning for help.

The problem? A concerted, organized effort such as that could be construed as an NCAA violation in which Notre Dame was publicizing a recruit’s visit to campus and encouraging that recruit to attend the school.

Once the Notre Dame compliance office received a missive about the plan, it bid the idea aloha.

  292. Garret November 20, 2008 8:59 pm

List of things that are banned…I hope that if the names get out of the recruits attending UH games that Warrior fans don’t do any of these things!

Signs, videos and messages over a public address system or printed T-shirts are among other no-nos as they relate to advertising a recruit’s visit to campus. There is only so much Notre Dame can control, however, and Karwoski indicated a mass banishment of anyone wearing a Hawaiian shirt is unlikely to occur.

  293. brew808 November 20, 2008 9:00 pm

    …warm rain!

    Garret – 23-28 or 24-28? I haven’t seen the party plans posted yet. 😯 😀 🙄

  294. Jason November 20, 2008 9:12 pm

    No rain in Salt Lake.

I’m really sleepy. I haven’t recovered from Monday night’s game. It threw me off this whole week.

  295. brew808 November 20, 2008 9:14 pm

no rain, and no rail…. 🙄

  296. Garret November 20, 2008 9:14 pm

    brew808,

I don’t know if there will be any time for a gathering. The Tsaikos are going to be worn out between the two tailgates, the karaoke call, and the normal family things for Thanksgiving. So, it is my understanding that the timing doesn’t work out.

It is probably for the best because 23-28 is such a short time and the two grandmothers have been planning for who will get the grandchildren (and Lori and me) to feed for dinner and which house we’ll be sleeping at. With just 5 nights, they really plan to cram a lot of activities (and FOOD) into each day…and I can’t break away too easily.

I could get to a lunch, but I think everyone is going to be too busy so that won’t work out I think.

  297. Stretch November 20, 2008 9:15 pm

Jason – come on, you one young boy, you slept in Tuesday morning.

  298. HiFlyer November 20, 2008 9:16 pm

    Kekoa

no rain yet in the town area.

did Guy Hagi say late tonight?

  300. brew808 November 20, 2008 9:19 pm

There’s the Na Koa lunch on Monday…. 😀

  301. brew808 November 20, 2008 9:20 pm

    Jason or Guy? 😆

  302. Garret November 20, 2008 9:22 pm

    brew808,

That is a GREAT idea…I think I’ll make it to that. Now, I’ve got to figure out which set of grandparents have us that day and what they are doing. Hopefully the plan won’t be to go to the beach that day, since I’m the lifeguard for my kids.

I’ll work hard on it, though…I need to be able to go to the Na Koa lunch!

  303. Garret November 20, 2008 9:23 pm

The other thing is, Monday was going to be the day that I could meet with UH profs about collaboration efforts with my company. It could bring UH some money and bring work for my company…hard to schedule meetings during Thanksgiving week!

  304. brew808 November 20, 2008 9:27 pm

The Willows is just “down the road” from campus. Sounds like a full work day…. 😆

  305. Stretch November 20, 2008 9:28 pm

Wahine sweep Boise St and move on in the WAC tournament

  306. brew808 November 20, 2008 9:30 pm

  307. d1島 November 20, 2008 9:34 pm

    No rain in Central Oahu.

Looking at the NWS satellite images it looks like the real heavy stuff is still about 2-4 hours away from Oahu.
Looks like some nasty stuff around and over Kauai right now.
…and that’s my meteorological report for tonight 😉

  308. Ralph November 20, 2008 9:34 pm

  312. Da Punchbowl Kid November 20, 2008 9:39 pm

  324. brew808 November 20, 2008 9:47 pm

Oooh – that’s pretty awesome HiFlyer! It looks like it’s tracking North and the bulk of it may just clip Oahu. No such luck for Kauai and people with new photovoltaic systems, new DISH systems, and a new car to keep clean! 😆 😯 😈

  325. Jason November 20, 2008 9:48 pm

Okay, I’ve always thought that brew808 is secretly the President of Mensa or something. Let’s give him a problem to solve:

folks talking about bringing binoculars fo’ spok da recruits…
    How come?
What you can tell from 200 yards away with the guy in street clothes?
If you see him, will you know him? Especially if Stephen didn’t even tell you who “he” is?
And if you spot him, den wat?
Wave at him? Again from 200 yards away?

    Help me out here, please….

Das just one excuse to bring the extra powerful binoculars so dat dey can spock the cheerleaders and dancers. Camouflaged intent…

    madeinhawaii,

I loved going to Showtime (Lakers) games at the Forum, and one thing I never stopped being amused about is how they would rent binoculars. During the game, I never saw people using those binoculars to focus on Magic, Kareem, or the rest of the players. However, during timeouts when the Laker Girls would perform, *all* of those binoculars would be immediately and coincidentally used…

  340. d1島 November 20, 2008 10:01 pm

    Get two kine cheerleaders.
Well, maybe more, depending on to whom you speak.

Better to get a camera with 10x optical or better than a binocular. OR get a dvr with 34x optical. You not only get to see the cheerleaders, you get to take them home with you.. ..well sort of… kind of…

Thanks everyone for the weather reports around the corner and up your street!

Strange thing is…whenever weather people predict gloom and doom, they make it sound so immediate. They get people all worked up. Remember when the weather person on all the local stations was also the news anchor?

Now we get Doppler radar and satellite imagery. Whiz bang technology and 7 day forecasts. If you really like know, change da station to the weather channel…or do what I did and ask the Tsaiko Ohana. Not only did I get an adequate update of the weather around our island, but also the mainland Tsaiko’s sent in their local report – Mahalo!

I, for one, think we should go back to the 2 minute overlay of the weather forecast on all the network stations. They could then spend more of the prime time on sports news. All of our sportscasters have to talk so fast now. They end up blasting the news at us so fast you have to rewind to make any sense of what Rob Demello just said!

RK is the exception. He keeps his report so mellow and low key with his auto-focus “I hope you’re having yourself a wonderful evening/life” monotone. He’s cool, and deserves more time to expand on his favorite subject.

Yes, it’s seems that it is clearly the calm before the storm. I do hope everyone took precautions to batten the hatches and prepare for another wet, wild, wonderful football game at the stadium!

G’night everyone…and Garret…I hope to see you at the Na Koa Luncheon on Monday!…and Brew…keep those cards and letters coming in!

Yesterday was a Winnie-the-Pooh kind of day; today looks to be the same, too.

    News story about SPAM!

An increase in the production and sales of Spam across the nation. Possibly attributed to harder financial times.

As one of the local newscasters said this morning, “That means Hawai’i has always been ahead of the curve in terms of finances or they just like their Spam.”

  377. wafan November 21, 2008 4:35 am

Thanks for the video! Very powerful.

    good morning tsaikos!!

about to board the plane to kauai now. I hope it’s not raining, it sucks to walk in the rain to get to the truck. good thing I parked close as possible but a little illegal. see you guys later.

  380. Stretch November 21, 2008 7:06 am

Karl Benson is going to be on 1420 from 8-9 this morning, taking phone calls. I wonder if people going be nice to him or give him the tough questions that will make him uncomfortable??

  381. jm2375 November 21, 2008 7:29 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Nice day so far.

Could someone please post Herr Benson’s comments? I say let’s make him uncomfortable. I’d like to see questions about the 1) bottom feeders and their possible demotion from D1A, 2) keeping the ponies in the WAC, 3) tv deals for football and basketball.

    Thanks.

  382. Stretch November 21, 2008 7:33 am

I wonder if someone will ask him about Benson State University and his plan if they leave.

  383. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER November 21, 2008 7:42 am

wafan- that video is a story.
Back in the late 60’s and 70’s, music was my passion and we had a group called Ubiquitas that toured the US right out of high school. At the same time, a young man named Bob Gundry was doing the same thing and we crossed paths a couple of times.
Devon Gundry is his son. The adults in the video are my contemporaries- (and this may be one of the last works of Alex Rocco) Red Grammer, etc.
Andy Grammer is another young artist who is making his way. The last time I saw him was when he was about 4- Ukuleleboi was a year old. It was on the Big Island where the Baha’is and early childhood educators had sponsored a concert tour for his dad, Red Grammer. He made that tour- only weeks after Hurricane Iniki hit.

This video is for all who suffer…

    Great Morning All!

    WooHoo! It’s vacation time!
    Which means it’s really gonna rain… 👿

Oh well. Have a great day erryboddy.

  386. madeinhawaii November 21, 2008 7:59 am

I shut all the windows last night and had a difficult time sleeping as it was too dang quiet. And whaddayaknow? no rain.

Which is good, though. I was expecting power outages all day in Kaneohe.

  387. madeinhawaii November 21, 2008 8:00 am

    Morning all!

MIH – maybe we shoud set ST’s watch to the blog time. Then he will get his boy to school on time and make it to practice while the players are still on the field.

  390. XxFaithxX November 21, 2008 8:02 am

    Good morning folks,

Hope all is fine and well. Its my saturday and the woman is sleeping still so I can blog and play my on-line game hehee…anyway..

One question about incoming recruits….wasn’t there a friend of Malcolm lane that said he too might/will join the team? IIRC it was around the week of the NMSU game. Is he really coming to UHM and if he is, scholie offer? walk-on?

  391. HiFlyer November 21, 2008 8:12 am

    Morning to all

Looks like the rain is coming, try to stay dry today everyone.

  392. djmitcho November 21, 2008 8:15 am

Good Morning Tsaikoville! I hope everyone stays dry in Hawaii. I’m happy the sun is shinning here, even though it’s in the mid 30’s right now.
As far as recruits go, like I said before, I’ll get excited on LOI day.

    Good Morning Tsaiko Land Lubbers!

Benson and Hedges. Remember that cigarret brand? Kinda fits present company…Benson, who also Hedges. Especially around WAC hard ball questions.

Who ever gets thru on the phone today should also ask about the WACky Officials. We’ve all seen Pop Warner officials do a better job! Ask him when they are going to hold these people accountable for the BS calls that are captured on video that makes us all want to string ’em up!

  395. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER November 21, 2008 8:25 am

Hmm, I thought this was an interesting quote from Stephen’s article, considering what we’ve discussed in the past:

McMackin used the possibility of rain to note the new apparel deal the UH athletic department and UnderArmour signed in the spring.

“Shoot, we’ve got the best cleats in the world,” McMackin said, smiling. “Why are we worried?”

  401. (Jesse) James November 21, 2008 9:01 am

Good morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes…gotta whoosh again today…lots to do…busy with work….

…and some punks smashed the back passenger window of my car, breaking into it…the jokes on them though, all they got was a bag with my stinky gym clothes in them….ha ha ha ha….

Still, it’s gonna be a hassle getting the window fixed and re-tinted….dang, that just gets me all p’d off…… 🙁

    heads up…

vacations hawaii is now selling seats for UNLV week. They have 4 flight patterns on OMNI that were going for 759-769. That price i think is right below 800 now because many of them are already half full and the price bumps after so many people book.

They do have Hawaiian and Delta packages too but those are at least 900+

That’s why he was “smiling” making that comment.

  405. Jason November 21, 2008 9:09 am

James: That sucks. Crazy what people do nowadays. Vandals (no pun intended, Idaho) broke into my church’s building (but didn’t get into our area) and trashed the soda machine in there. They cut the fuel line of our bus, stole the gas, and broke a window to get to some aluminum cans that we were going to redeem. We no longer park the bus on the church grounds because of that. And the Korean church got its bus’ windshield destroyed, so they ended up getting a new mini-van to replace it.

But for all the bad stories, you hear good stories like this:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=buffalo58

Buffalo should be going to a bowl game this year — maybe even the Hawai‘i Bowl, according to ESPN’s projections. It would be nice to have the members of that ’58 Buffalo team at the bowl game to be honored. It might be tough if it were here in Hawai‘i because of the costs, but still, that would be awesome.

  406. takoboy November 21, 2008 9:11 am

thx bb, any word on packages linking seattle/pullman and vegas

sure sounds like its pretty guaranteed we’re playing in seattle and wanna jump on those prices ASAP

  407. Jay November 21, 2008 9:17 am

I have to remind my wife many times that she needs to hide her makeup bag under the chair or take it with her. Give them NO reason to bust in, even if it’s just a measely makeup bag. Even if they don’t take anything, like (J)J’s case, you still have to hassle with the repairs to your door locks or windows.

  408. bb November 21, 2008 9:17 am

    No word yet on pullman/vegas

and athe OMNI flights are closer to 900 now.

there are going to be a lot less seats going up to vegas with ATA and Aloha gone and it seems that Hawaiian knows this fact as well with their HNL-LAS pricing for that week.

  409. Pomai November 21, 2008 9:18 am

Well if any of you would like to trade weather conditions I would be more than happy too!!!!!!!!!

To me, that’s BS. They are ripping off the people of Hawaii because they know that people will be going to the game. To their credit, they brought the fares down a little but still higher than normal. I understand they are in business to make money but I wish they would be fair to everyone. Their plane is going to be full and they will make money if they charge their regular fare.
