Running back commits to UH

Running back Jack Sula, who originally signed with Boise State in February but never attended that school, has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. The Carson (Calif.) High graduate will enroll at UH in January, and have five years to play four seasons.

He was the subject of an ESPN The Magazine article this year:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3310788

* * *

And might I add, it’s game day. And a rainy one at that. Daniel Libre has been working out, so I imagine he will play. But it looks like the game plan is to open with Kealoha Pilares at running back. And, also, look for Pilares to return punts.

I think this rain is going to be a problem for UH.
On a clear day, UH has a big advantage. But on wet field, not so much, especially since Idaho is going to sit back in a zone. That will force UH to go with the slants and quick out.
And if it’s tough to move the ball, it will be a tight game. Anything can happen in a tight game.

  6. Stephen Tsai November 22, 2008 8:22 am

Then again, I like the idea of Ryan Mouton back at free safety.
I remember how happy the defensive coaches were a few years ago when Leonard Peters got his extra year. That cut down the chances of other teams breaking away for long gains.

  7. Stephen Tsai November 22, 2008 8:22 am

I think if Mouton played safety against Nevada, Colin Kaepernick doesn’t score on that long run.

  8. Stretch November 22, 2008 8:25 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I am not so worried about the rain but the wind. It will be tough for Alexander to get the ball to the receivers if it is blowing hard tonight. Good thing the running game has picked up this season, I suspect more running tonight if the weather keeps up.

  9. Maverick November 22, 2008 8:28 am

    Good Gameday Gang!
Notice the three consecutive G’s ?

This could be a challenging game tonight, indeed, due to the kona weather. It will wreak havoc on everthing, and hopefully the electrical stays intact.

Glad you made it home. No darkside on Kauai, or so I’ve been told. Or are you blogging from Kauai?

  14. Stretch November 22, 2008 8:40 am

I like this line from the ESPN story.

Misaalefua coached his kids to play like warriors, treating each individual battle on the field as a matter of family honor.

If Jack can continue this, he will fit in perfectly!!

  15. Stretch November 22, 2008 8:42 am

  16. d1島 November 22, 2008 8:43 am

    repeating from last post

Sula sounds like a great prospect.
Most intriguing line in the article:

Running back Jake Heun is redshirting this season. But Heun also can play defensive end.

Couple this with a comment Mack made recently about losing three(?) DE’s after this season….

  20. mano1 November 22, 2008 8:49 am

    ST,

Read the espn story on Jack Sula…thank you. Not sure why he never went to BS…but from the story he looks like the tough, strong, runner and blocker many of us want for the warriors. Also looks to be a person of great inner strength and super heart with a loving family who have been through a lot to get to this point in life but stuck too their goals and values. I pray for him to excel here in Hawaii and that he adds more great things to his life’s story and as well as his family’s….both his families…including his new warrior nation family.

  22. FloridaTed November 22, 2008 8:52 am

A good, durable running back is what we need. For some reason our RB’s seem to be quite fragile.

With Jack Sula and Jake Heun, maybe we can run a few plays with Heun as fulback and Sula as tailback, that could be fun for few surprise plays. I can’t wait to see Heun in a few short yardage goal line plays.

If we win out, including the Bowl game, we should get some notice for next year, having been practically written off by the Mainland press at the beginning of the year. It would clearly show that we’re back in the game, especially with a win against Cincinnati.

  23. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER November 22, 2008 8:53 am

  24. FloridaTed November 22, 2008 8:57 am

    Tsai-Meister,

I totally agree with you on Mouton. I feel very good with him back there.

As a lock down corner, it’s just one area he takes care of, but with his speed, he’ll cover a lot of ground at free safety. There are not many players who can out run him. You’re also right about Kaepernick, he would have caught him.

  25. Maverick November 22, 2008 8:59 am

Hi Ted, just noticed this am that I sent an Email sent to you by mistake. That list of T’s for first names defaults without my noticing sometimes.

  39. A-House November 22, 2008 9:40 am

Sula sounds like a “power” running back. Anyone know his time in the 40?

Another recruit, Kamalani Alo, may be a “power” running back also. Watched him in the Farrington game as a “free safety” and he can run, hit and take down players. Can you imagine if he was carrying the ball?

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2008 9:40 am

Neat article about the new Warrior. Very touching. He sounds like the perfect fit for our program.

Welcome Jack! Great to have you and your family in the Warrior Ohana.

  41. FloridaTed November 22, 2008 9:42 am

    Hi, Maverick,

The Ohana is fine, except the economy is completely in the crapper around here, but I’m sure Hawaii is not much better. Lost 80 % of my business, nobody can get decent financing, it’s the pits.

Looking for a job is a waste of time, oh, well, I better get some cheese with my wine. Take care.

    Stretch,
at least when it rains here its warm rain. everywhere else this would be freezing.

  43. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 9:43 am

Sula wants to be a running back first and foremost and not a linebacker. I can understand that. Hawaii needs a hard hitting RB that’s not afraid to block but who also has soft hands and is willing to reach out and go for the ball and apparently, Sula fits that description perfectly.

    Welcome to the Warriors Sula!!

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2008 9:48 am

    Stretch,

Yup. It’s really coming down, and doesnt look like it’s gonna let up. I’m glad we’re going to have Pilares’ light quick feet at the RB spot tonight. Hopefully the new recruits understand this isn’t typical game day weather. At least it won’t be snowing… 🙂

I kept checking the weather radars last night and thought the rain might not be as bad as predicted. It looks like I was wrong.

  46. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 9:48 am

    A-House

His last time was 4.6/40 I believe..

He’s got quickness but not so much speed. Good size to break the initial tackles and get that first down on third and short. BUT he has good hands and in a shuffle pass situation, that could spell a lot of first downs for the Warriors.

  47. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2008 9:50 am

Of course, now that I’ve said it looks like it won’t let up, it will prolly start drying up. 😆

  49. BG November 22, 2008 9:52 am

    Good morning Tsaiko Nation!

If this weather holds up, things won’t be too bad at all. Someone else mentioned earlier (and I agree), it won’t be the rain that affects UH, but the wind.

Betty got up this morning with a sore throat and I’m asking her to stay home and rest up. She’s not too happy because she “needs to look after me and keep me out of trouble”. Hehehehe

Anyway, I’m bringing one of my former soldiers from Schofield and had gotten him a ticket. Now, he’ll sit with me and I have one ticket available. J Force called me last night and claimed the other 3 extra tickets that I had. Bottom line…I have one ticket (supposedly in a dry section) if anyone needs it. Call me 381-9334.

    longboarder, Bwahahaha!!!! How cruel! 😈

Most of the games on the tube so far today have been blowouts. The Apple Cup is on right now, Boise-Nevada starts in about 40 minutes on the Deuce, and why is Florida playing The Citadel this late in the season?

  59. al November 22, 2008 10:49 am

40 yard times are great measurables, yes.

but, it is not the end to all times.

for example, many of you say, “we wish we had a nate ilaoa again.”
and many say he was the best. i agree. but he ran 4.7/40’s. but, he hit the hole quick, brushed off tacklers, juked them out of their socks, etc. the main point in the rb is to be better than the dline and the linebackers. out running the db’s is another thing.

in our offense, we don’t need a guy to tear off 80 yards at a time. just 5 and 10. block and catch the ball.

sula averaged 8+ yards per carry in two years. he caught over 25 balls per year as well. all this while playing lb on defense. he gained 1800+ two years running. found the endzone some 40-50 times. i imagine he will block with the same ferocity.

another slow running back with a very storied career was marcus allen. he never outraced the db’s but he made fools out of the dline and lb’s for example.

glad to see that jack sula’s second chance will be at second chance university. yah, he gets his wish as he will strap it up for SC afterall.

    …nuff said

Though it may hamper some players on both teams, the rain actually suits us since we have a crappy punter with no touch. The soggy carpet prevents his punts from bouncing into the endzone. I know people will say how “brilliant” Grasso is, but truthfully when was the last time he had a brilliant game in good weather. I would say that every team we played this year (and even the last year come to think of it) had a better punter; that’s just pathetic. If you think I exaggerate, visualize us having McBriar right now. I say that translates to at least 2 more wins for us this year. I fervently hope Coach Mack is recruiting someone actively. I’m disappointed (and shocked, really) that we don’t have someone already on the team beating him out for the job. Sorry to be so negative, but punting is a crucial part of special teams–this year, Grasso has been a huge liability.

tsai, are u able to say who the 5 that visiting today are?

  86. Jason November 22, 2008 12:29 pm

BTW, that was a great ESPN story on Jack Sula. Glad to hear he’ll be a Warrior!

  87. d1島 November 22, 2008 12:33 pm

Maybe the snow was too irresistible for a South Bend visitor today.
First time in snow, gotta throw snowballs, eh? Wat the coach going say?
“Eh, cut it out or no scholie for you!” Doubt it!

    heheheh

  88. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 12:36 pm

The pistol is shooting blanks against Boise so far. Kaepernick hasn’t been able to get much to this point.

  89. Kazz November 22, 2008 12:37 pm

    The skies are angry today.

All will be well with my trusty longsleeve UA mock turtleneck and ziplock bag to protect my keys, cell, and wallet.

  90. d1島 November 22, 2008 12:37 pm

    protector,

    Interesting.

Which two games are you figuring?

  91. jm2375 November 22, 2008 12:37 pm

jason – get uh ponchos at longs. no need go ward or waikele.

  92. BillB November 22, 2008 12:38 pm

Jason, if your going to check out the Sports Authority store in Waikele, take a look in the Adidas outlet. Sometime they have waterproof jackets on sale. Looks good, the quality is good and Adidas is always in.

Bad weather always benefits the underdog, it’s a great equalizer.

  93. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 12:42 pm

Just when the offense starts to click and picks up a swagger, the weather turns bad like this … how humbling is that?

  94. Kazz November 22, 2008 12:42 pm

    UH 38
    IDAHO 21

  95. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 12:43 pm

Will the fans be chanting Funaki.. FUNAKI… tonight? Ball will be slippery.. run or shoot.

  96. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2008 12:45 pm

Yep, this a real rain storm by cracky…

  97. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 12:45 pm

Hard to catch.. hard to throw.. hard to hold on to… jeeze. Hard to watch, in the rain, too. 🙂 Can we blame this bad weather on the ex-AD, too?

  98. Kazz November 22, 2008 12:46 pm

    Jason,

I was going to say the same thing. Just get a poncho. A UH one of course 🙂 .

  99. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 12:47 pm

I’m surprised we still have power and internet connectivity here in Kaneohe!

  100. Jason November 22, 2008 12:54 pm

    I don’t like ponchos.

  101. Kazz November 22, 2008 12:56 pm

    Jason,

Join the rest of your fellow Maniacs and just go shirtless then!

    CHEEEEHOOOOO!!!

  102. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 12:57 pm

So far the only thing I accomplished today was to make breakfast and a dozen apple turnovers.

  103. d1島 November 22, 2008 12:58 pm

    mih,

Why? Does Funaki mean “rain go away” in some language?

  104. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 12:59 pm

    jason..

shirtless…with nylon swim trunks… rubber slippers.. and don’t forget…electrician’s tape… water paint runs! Then again.. tape won’t stick too well to wet bodies, eh?

  105. Jason November 22, 2008 1:00 pm

Don’t even think about that; the crowd would run for the exits!

  106. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2008 1:01 pm

Bring a mask and snorkel maybe… Make sure the mask has windshield wipers.

  107. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 1:03 pm

Even Boise’s taking advantage of Nevada’s pass-defense (or lack thereof). Kellen Moore has 321 yds passing…..IN THE FIRST HALF!

  108. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 1:05 pm

    D1…

Don’t know if our Warriors will be able to air it out in this weather. Ball will be heavy, wet, and slippery. Rain will be in the eyes of the receivers…This is one of those times when running up the middle might not look like that bad of a call.

Jeeze… even running sounds dangerous. I’m just praying that none of the players get hurt.

  109. lab rat November 22, 2008 1:07 pm

I don’t think Pilares should be returning punts in this weather.

  110. bb November 22, 2008 1:08 pm

    guess the attendance…

    27,500

  111. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 1:15 pm

    bb…

Can that many fit under the sheltered areas of the stadium? Expect extra long lines at the bathrooms tonight.

  112. FloridaTed November 22, 2008 1:19 pm

That is a well wriiten and touching story on the Sula kid.

Considering the life he successfully emerged from, Hawaii truly must seem like Paradise to him. I think he is one that will thrive very well in the Warrior Ohana. At least in Hawaii, if you hear a gun shot, it is most likely a car back firing.

  116. Mad Dog November 22, 2008 1:39 pm

Washington vs Washington State, tied 13-13 in second overtime. How fitting. Oceanic 226

  117. bb November 22, 2008 1:40 pm

i sit in the blue section and all season no one has ever sat in my row…and these are seats right on the 40…its just me and my GF…it made for easy entry and exit to the stairs….

looks like its gonna be a full row tonight from orange orphans…

  118. djmitcho November 22, 2008 1:43 pm

wow, apple sauce cup is in OT…I guess both teams would like to be king of the losers.

  119. Mad Dog November 22, 2008 1:45 pm

Washington missed a short field goal. Washington State makes the field goal and wins the Washington Loser Bowl 16-13 in th second overtime.

  120. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 1:45 pm

    Wazzu wins in 2 OT.

    Utah scores first. 3-0.

  121. djmitcho November 22, 2008 1:45 pm

Wow, Cougs win it in 2nd OT. They will be riding high when they got here next week.

  122. Mad Dog November 22, 2008 1:46 pm

I got to give it to the Washington State fans. They have a team with such a terrible record, but the fans filled the stadium and made so much noise. I wonder if the same thing would happen at Aloha Stadium if Hawaii had a losing record.

  123. bb November 22, 2008 1:47 pm

and the cougar fans even rushed the field…..

they most def will be riding high…

  124. Mad Dog November 22, 2008 1:48 pm

The Coug fans flooded the field at the end of the game as if they won the Pac 10 championship

  125. BowsForever November 22, 2008 1:48 pm

  126. d1島 November 22, 2008 1:49 pm

    ok, now I got 27,499 more guesses….

  127. djmitcho November 22, 2008 1:51 pm

    Mad Dog,
That’s what you get in a big rivalry game like the Apple Cup. It doesn’t matter what the records are. It’s a big deal here in Washington

  128. Mad Dog November 22, 2008 1:55 pm

Too bad the same spirited fans couldn’t fill up Aloha Stadium like that. Our fans would even give up with the rain. But I’ll be at the stadium tonight. A little flood never hurts a true Warrior fan.

  129. d1島 November 22, 2008 1:55 pm

    djmitcho,

Maybe someone around there will be so happy that they’ll invite you to join them on the trip next week.

  132. d1島 November 22, 2008 1:57 pm

    70-19.

I thought this was an early season WBB score when it scrolled on the screen but it’s actually what Florida did to Citadel today. 🙄

  133. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 1:58 pm

Looks like Cal Poly is gonna take Wisconsin into overtime.

I have a lot of respect for Cal Poly and they’re one of the best I-AA (or FCS) teams in the country, but this has got to be embarrassing for the Badgers.

  134. djmitcho November 22, 2008 2:00 pm

Wow, Nevada is making it a game. Now down by only 1 td after a pick 6

  135. djmitcho November 22, 2008 2:03 pm

that would be awesome, but I think I’m gonna have sit here in cougar country and rep for da warriors!

    Florida

    San Jose St.
    Boise St.
    Utah St.

Wisconsin scores a TD and converts the PAT.

    Wisconsin 36
    Cal Poly 35

  146. BowsForever November 22, 2008 2:19 pm

I don’t think there’s any doubt now that Nevada is a dangerous team. 24 points on the Broncos in the 3rd quarter alone?! Wow!

C’mon Boise State! Keep that undefeated season alive so you can (maybe) bring home the BCS bacon for the WAC!

I feel kinda weird rooting for ’em…

  147. NYUH November 22, 2008 2:21 pm

I hate it but rootin for BS. Nice punt return.

  148. BowsForever November 22, 2008 2:24 pm

  149. NYUH November 22, 2008 2:25 pm

  150. BowsForever November 22, 2008 2:30 pm

    YES. 😉

$500,000 isn’t chump change, especially these days. If Donovan can root for BYU and Boise with his dignity intact, so can I.

  152. Pride. November 22, 2008 2:36 pm

So what does Stanford’s loss to Cal mean to the Hawaii Bowl? Is there still a chance for the Pac-10 to have six bowl eligible teams?

  153. Stretch November 22, 2008 2:38 pm

For those who don’t want to watch college football and have HD cable, check channel 1561 – MOJO. They are showing Three Sheets all day and night. It’s a funny show and sometimes wish I was the host.

  154. d1島 November 22, 2008 2:42 pm

    Stretch,

For those who don’t want to watch college football and have HD cable

I think you gotta go for more “marketing” training. Why would anyone who no like watch CFB be reading this blog?

  155. d1島 November 22, 2008 2:46 pm

    …and now the on-side kick

  156. d1島 November 22, 2008 2:48 pm

  157. Stretch November 22, 2008 2:49 pm

  158. djmitcho November 22, 2008 2:53 pm

  159. d1島 November 22, 2008 2:53 pm

Kapernick is making this a game for Nevada

  161. Stretch November 22, 2008 2:54 pm

dj – that’s the show. now you can understand why those three guys would appreciate it.

  162. djmitcho November 22, 2008 2:56 pm

Listening to the Boise announcers, you can tell they want to say something about that last PI call, but are holding back. If it was BC and Kekaula, you know that they would have been all over the refs.

  165. Kazz November 22, 2008 2:58 pm

The 2009 WAC football season will be very interesting indeed!

  166. djmitcho November 22, 2008 3:01 pm

  167. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 3:05 pm

  168. Stretch November 22, 2008 3:07 pm

too bad Nevada didn’t score the touchdown first, then they would have been down by only 3. That would have been a lot better for me.

  169. djmitcho November 22, 2008 3:07 pm

Nevada’s d holds, and Boise misses a long field goal. Nevada gets ball back and has a chance to tie it up

Boise wins 41-34. Stretch, I pushed

  174. Kazz November 22, 2008 3:14 pm

So seriously… what is keeping Nevada in this game?

Nevada’s run D is ok, but BSU isn’t running as much this season.

Nevada’s pass D is horrible and BSU is throwing a helluva lot more this year.

Is it really just Kaepernick? I’m not watching the game.

  175. FloridaTed November 22, 2008 3:14 pm

    d1,

Thar radar doesn’t look too nice. Hawaiis fickle fans will stay away to the tune of about 5000, they’re babies when it comes to weather.

  176. BowsForever November 22, 2008 3:18 pm

There were two pick-sixes by the Nevada D according to the stats, Kazz.

  177. BowsForever November 22, 2008 3:19 pm

Whew. BSU one game away from a perfect season in a real nail-biter game.

    Now…go BYU!

I almost feel sick saying that.

Ugly game here in Ogden, 4 int’s = iminent loss.

ryan was done before the first half, made a valiant effort, but the separated shoulder had a dire effect on his effectiveness. he took a shower at half time and was in a sling when he came out.

prayers and good thoughts for a quick recovery for ryan and his team mates.

at 39 degrees, it’s really cold for this papa bear.

now WARRIORS, LET’S GO AND GET A VICTORY!!!

  189. al November 22, 2008 4:18 pm

when did he separate that shoulder?

Al- you coming down here sometime? We are talking. Vegas.

  191. Bulla November 22, 2008 4:30 pm

    whew,
long day….ryan separated his shoulder in practice, in a play, a RB dove on top of him at the end of the play…so treatments all week, game day decision to play.

they gave him a shot, but too painful to go after the first couple of series.

    E. Washington came to play, projected in pre season to be 2nd in the conference…..tall qb, about 6’4 with a rifle arm. but he could run like a scared deer also.

playoffs next week, soheal up, man up, suck it up and roll on.

cameron was off today, 4 int’s, which is not normal for him….time to heal up regroulp and move on. thanks for asking!!!

    …and we’re off!

  199. BowsForever November 22, 2008 4:52 pm

I did NOT expect what’s happening to Texas Tech right now. Can they come back?

BSU may end up undefeated and without a BCS bowl bid. A shame, but that’s the way it goes, I guess. BYU had a good game going, but after all those INTs and the fumble…

  200. djmitcho November 22, 2008 4:53 pm

Oklahoma 28 T.Tech 0. Oklahoma has had the ball 5 times and scored on 4 of those.

  201. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 4:53 pm

Utah completes their undefeated season. They double up BYU 48-24

  202. FloridaTed November 22, 2008 5:12 pm

Texas Tech is playing scared and BYU was exposed against TCU and again against Utah. They look to be for real. BSU still has a chance, the PAC10 may only get one team into the BCS, OSU just missed an extra point and may be losing. Big East sucks, so does the ACC.

  203. djmitcho November 22, 2008 5:15 pm

  222. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 6:44 pm

That drive took half the quarter, resulting in a Vandal TD.

Did Idaho bring their band? Nice of them to do so.

  223. las vegas November 22, 2008 6:52 pm

  231. Ronnie November 22, 2008 7:08 pm

What happened? What did the guy do to get ejected?

Oh NO!!! Ryan is liming off the field!

  232. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 7:10 pm

    Who got ejected?

  233. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 7:11 pm

    mouton’s limping?

  234. Ronnie November 22, 2008 7:11 pm

#6 for Idaho was ejected after the PAT after the last Warrior TD. They didn’t show a replay.

  235. las vegas November 22, 2008 7:13 pm

    first quarter C+

  236. Ronnie November 22, 2008 7:13 pm

Ryan recovered a fumble, but was limping back to the sideline when he got up.

Then a couple of plays later Kealoha fumbled and Idaho got it back. Now it’s the end of the 1st qtr.

  237. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 7:13 pm

    Alexander looks good.
    5-6 157 yds 1 TD — through the 1st Q.

  242. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 7:16 pm

  243. Ronnie November 22, 2008 7:17 pm

    No problem Mih!

Dowling just intercepted Idaho intercepted for a pick 6!!! Yee Haw Dowling!!

Oh bummer! It looks like he stepped out of bounds at the 2. Big Bummer!

  244. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 7:17 pm

OTOH, looks like Dowling stepped out at the UI 2. Play is under review.

  245. hawnstln November 22, 2008 7:18 pm

why is Leahey harping on the runner being out of bounds BEFORE they called for a review??????

  246. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 7:19 pm

    http://www.justin.tv/xyyz

  254. hawnstln November 22, 2008 7:24 pm

Unless we improve our special teams play, mark my words, we’re going to give Kama a huge game. Gotta improve our punt/KO coverage.

  255. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 7:26 pm

The difference between other team’s passes and the Warriors is that the other team’s receivers too often have to stop to catch the ball, while most of our passes lately are caught on the run. This is a good thing!

  256. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 7:27 pm

Weather is cool and breezy. Idaho Brot a small band, mascot and cheer squad.

  257. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 7:31 pm

For Idaho.. I suppose this is their “bowl” game.

  258. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 7:32 pm

    Nice field goal.. whoah… !

As long as the Warriors get the TDs on their possessions, they can give Idaho the FGs all night long.

Looks like the makings of a high scoring game.

  259. duffer November 22, 2008 7:39 pm

Anyone see Tyler on the sidelines?

  260. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 7:41 pm

  264. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 7:45 pm

I see Tyler on the side.

  265. duffer November 22, 2008 7:46 pm

  269. trevors dad November 22, 2008 7:49 pm

  270. hawnstln November 22, 2008 7:50 pm

    Nice cover by smith.

  271. Ronnie November 22, 2008 7:53 pm

  272. Ronnie November 22, 2008 7:54 pm

Yee Haw for Gma! Josh Leonard looked great making that sack!

  273. hawnstln November 22, 2008 8:00 pm

Ronnie, can you paste al’s attachment information and send it to me? mahalo.

  274. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:01 pm

Man.. this is like a Colt B.. game.. you cannot go peepee without missing a TD!

    lol

  275. trevors dad November 22, 2008 8:01 pm

hey bubba’s dad…what about the game so far? the ‘d’ has a bunch of studs.

  276. curveball November 22, 2008 8:03 pm

That last 3 down series the O line was ridiculous

  277. hawnstln November 22, 2008 8:05 pm

Alexander looks real average recently. Low passes, long passes are not accurate and he looks a little rattled with the little pressure he is receiving. He needs to look a more conservative, safe passes in the 3rd quarter.Does anyone think Tyler is going to play?

  278. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 8:05 pm

    Halftime.

  279. las vegas November 22, 2008 8:06 pm

  282. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 8:10 pm

    Military appreciation presentations at halftime.

    Ok Duffer. I gotcha cookie.

  283. FloridaTed November 22, 2008 8:11 pm

The defense has really turned up the heat. Alexander a little off now, hope he gets his touch back in the second half.

  284. las vegas November 22, 2008 8:11 pm

Umm, I think Tyler is pretty much history

GA should be allowed to finish the game, he needs the full speed reps

  285. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:18 pm

I think we’ll see a lot of the second and third team in the 4th quarter. Especially the seniors. Would love to see Jake Santos come in and take one in!

  286. Kekoa November 22, 2008 8:23 pm

Kookiekane ate da last “H” cookie!

  287. Pauoa Boy November 22, 2008 8:25 pm

Greg Alexander is doing just fine, Graunke might as well hang up his jersey for the rest of the year he will never see the field again! Too bad, so sad! The offense is finally hitting a groove and should finish the season out with a lot of positives. If the offense can protect and move the ball consistently and the defense hold it down, we will win every game here on out and we will beat whoeva’s arse wants to play us in the Hawaii Bowl! Defensive front 4 is doing a great job getting pressure upfield. Nice adjustments on D after Potatoe Girls first series. So far so good, now it’s time to put the finishing touches on these Mashed Potatoes!

  288. d1shima(tilted) November 22, 2008 8:26 pm

    duffer,
graunke hasn’t missed too many meals lately.
    2nd Q was an OL coach’s nightmare .

  289. Ronnie November 22, 2008 8:27 pm

oh oh! Ryan came out of the second half wearing a boot… but at least he isn’t using crutches

  290. curveball November 22, 2008 8:29 pm

  291. hawnstln November 22, 2008 8:29 pm

1st play, Farmer on an off tackle run??!!??

  292. Ronnie November 22, 2008 8:31 pm

Yikes! It took the whole team to bring down GA!

  293. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:32 pm

Pilares looks injured again.. this is not good at all. We just ran out of running backs… Farmer is all that’s left,I think.

  294. hawnstln November 22, 2008 8:33 pm

Is LWJ suited u[ for the game?

  295. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:34 pm

    hey.. Libre is in?!!

  296. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 8:36 pm

    Alexander to Lane. TD!

  297. hawnstln November 22, 2008 8:37 pm

No discipline …. again!!! There is no need for the ‘cut throat’ gesture. This is a coaching problem!

  298. curveball November 22, 2008 8:37 pm

Great catch…dumb player penalty..come on know the rules..you cant do that

  299. Pauoa Boy November 22, 2008 8:38 pm

I agree with Yamanoha, what a weak unsportsmanlike call. Whatevas though, Lane you dummy!

hawnstln – LWJ foot injury still lingering I no think he going play even if he suited up. I’d be surprised if he did.

  300. Unkanesson November 22, 2008 8:38 pm

    Aloha kakou!
Listening to Bobby & Robert online.
Mouton is done for the game — high ankle sprain.
Pilares also hurt — knee possibly — Libre in his place.

  301. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:38 pm

Oops Dan Kelly to the rescue again! LOL

  302. hawnstln November 22, 2008 8:40 pm

Kama almost broke it … again! We need to work on our specail team coverage so that when we play better teams, we do not get hurt.

  303. NYUH November 22, 2008 8:41 pm

Graham Harrell passed Colt’s all-time passing stats today with 14,759 yards to Colt’s 14,740 yards.

  304. Ronnie November 22, 2008 8:43 pm

    NYUH, how many TDs?

  305. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:43 pm

Nice 4th down stop by the defense..

  306. Kekoa November 22, 2008 8:44 pm

Kelly had to make the stop! What if?

  307. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 8:46 pm

Watching Coach Mack chest bumping the Dee after they held the Vandals on 4th down was the coolest thing all night!

  308. las vegas November 22, 2008 8:47 pm

    3rd Q moving slow

  309. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 8:50 pm

    TD Libre!!!!!

  310. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:50 pm

Ran the same play twice and waltzed right in… nice TD!

  311. curveball November 22, 2008 8:51 pm

O line looked real good on this drive..just stay consistent

  312. NYUH November 22, 2008 8:51 pm

    Ronnie,

Colt is still ahead by 6 on TDs with 131TDs.

  313. hawnstln November 22, 2008 8:51 pm

  315. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 8:52 pm

The wind is picking up and it’s getting chilly!

  316. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:54 pm

I am amazed that it hasn’t really rained since the game started.

  317. Ronnie November 22, 2008 8:58 pm

Disconcerting signals! WTH is that?! That’s as bad as the “leverage” penalty.

  318. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 8:59 pm

    Idaho is moving the chains..

  319. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 8:59 pm

The “disconcerting signals” penalty is out of the same array as the “giving him the business” penalty. Rarely see them called.

  320. curveball November 22, 2008 9:00 pm

Raining in Kalihi Valley now..it is chilly

  321. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 9:00 pm

I think the WAC officials get together with a thesaurus just to come up with new penalties to assess the Warriors.

  322. Ronnie November 22, 2008 9:02 pm

so, is disconcerting signals like chatter in baseball?

  323. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 9:03 pm

Maybe Elimimian threw the ref a kiss or something like that.

  324. curveball November 22, 2008 9:04 pm

    Ronnie:
    That is one stupid rule…geezzzzzz

  325. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 9:05 pm

Hmm… Idaho is really inching their way to the goal line.. want to see our Warriors make a stop here.

  326. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 9:05 pm

    Ronnie,

A NCAA definition for disconcerting signals:

“No player shall use words or signals that disconcert opponents when they are preparing to put the ball in play. No player may call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of (or otherwise interfere with) offensive starting signals.”

For example, a defensive player calling “hut, hut”, causing the O-Line to false start.

  327. Ronnie November 22, 2008 9:06 pm

“hey oline, oline, oline, oline… MOVE!”

  328. madeinhawaii November 22, 2008 9:07 pm

Touchdown.. Idaho… chuckle… How many yards credited to the refs?

  329. curveball November 22, 2008 9:08 pm

    Swing batter ,swing batter

  330. Ronnie November 22, 2008 9:10 pm

Thanks CRW. At least they have a definition. I couldn’t find one in the nfl rulebook for a “leverage” call I heard earlier in the year.

  331. hawnstln November 22, 2008 9:13 pm

I think we just made the ‘over’.

  332. curveball November 22, 2008 9:14 pm

There are a lot of words besides HUT..like go..snap hike. we used red red..so how do you know what is a simulated sound…stupid

  333. duffer November 22, 2008 9:14 pm

It seems that everytime there is a “controversial” call, K5 doesn’t show a replay. Or am I imagining this?

  334. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 9:16 pm

I don’t care for that rule either. Unfortunately that rule stay in the rulebook.

  335. TChahng [대한민국] November 22, 2008 9:18 pm

Okay enough scoring already. We’re on my prediction. Throw in the all the seniors!

    Chicken dinnah!

  351. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 9:50 pm

We could possibly end the season ranked 2nd in the WAC if Nevada beats Louisiana Tech in Ruston next week.

Right on PB. Hawaii will have played 5 teams this year who were ranked in the top 25!! Pretty tough schedule in light of all the criticism we had last year. If we make a bowl game (win one of the next two),it will have been a very successful year. Go Warriors!!!!

  353. Pauoa Boy November 22, 2008 9:59 pm

I think our boys can win out the rest of the games and the Hawaii Bowl…Washington State and Cinci may be tough games but they are both playing us at home and we are in whoop @ss mode right now so I see no one who can beat us!

Regardless of the schedule the WAC always gets the shaft! You mean to tell me that Boise State may not get a BCS Bowl bid at #9 and still undefeated. How the heo if we only had to get to #12 to earn a bid with a weak arse schedule??? Not on Boise State bandwagon by no means but WTF, why is the WAC getting shafted Mr. Benson???

  354. Kekoa November 22, 2008 10:05 pm

Jake! You blew your chance! See…all that clowning around on da sidelines made you look silly bro!

Now I gotta put you back on da Cub Scout team! Where’s my clipboard!

  355. lab rat November 22, 2008 10:19 pm

    One more to go baby.

I wonder if Manti was at the Notre Dame game. Too bad some fans pelted the team with snowballs after the loss.

  356. hawnstln November 22, 2008 10:32 pm

    lab rat,
You’re right that if our top local boys want to get the recognition, they should play for Coach Mac and in front of their families. UH will have a terrific team next year; solid senior/junior offense and a ton of terrific defensive players who are red or gray shirting. They represent the whole state, not just one school. I would think that any local boy would love to be in that environment/team.

Teo would be a terrific addition to our 2009 class but if he is set on playing on the mainland, I wish him well. We’ll just give his spot to a deserving mainland boy. And there are a lot of them that would love to play for a ranked UH team.

  357. wafan November 22, 2008 10:32 pm

What was the final spectator count? Geez, people act as if they are going to melt.

Can you imagine if it were to snow? Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

  358. LizKauai (iPhone) November 22, 2008 10:36 pm

Wafan, the fan faithful were rewarded with perfect game weather!

  359. al November 22, 2008 10:48 pm

    ah pboy…..we think alike.
btw, i ran into a marine yesterday and invited him over for turkey day dinner. he politely refused saying he had plans with some local friends. he wasy startled how the hawaiian hospitality was so generous.

well, we may not be getting mr. randle but sounds like we are getting a great kid from carson.

  360. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 10:54 pm

Turnstile attendance was pathetic, for a lack of better words: 23,491.

  361. Committed Road Warrior November 22, 2008 10:55 pm

I suppose people were ‘scared’ off by potentially inclement weather (read: rain).

  362. Pauoa Boy November 22, 2008 11:01 pm

    al,
I not worried Sula is going to be a great back for us. Randle has his sights set on the PAC-10 as his top choice. Plus with everybody jumping on his bandwagon late this season he has been overwhelmed with offers. A friend of his says he’s narrowed it down to one of the schools in the PAC-10, everyone’s thinking either UCLA or ASU.

  363. kymrykauai November 22, 2008 11:20 pm

Mahalo tsai-ko’s for a great afternoon and evening! It was a great game and the weather could not have been more perfect. Mahalo to all of you!!! Ijust finished my onolicious rice crispy treats!!!

  364. Jason November 22, 2008 11:40 pm

    Turnstile Count: 23,491
    Tickets Issued: 39,014

What a huge difference! And it hardly rained, just a little drizzle every so often. Nothing heavy at all, like earlier today.

Great game, great tailgate. Major props to the d1shimas for the post-game meal — corn chowder like Dad used to make, cookies and milk like Grandma used to serve. Just like when I was a little kid. 🙂

  365. kapakahi November 22, 2008 11:53 pm

Verbal commits TJ Alifipo and Mike Wadsworth (both from Las Vegas Silverado HS) were among five (5) prospects apparently on their official recruiting visits that attended tonight’s Idaho game.

I couldn’t recognize the other 3 guys except to say that they looked more like JC guys:
    – a thicker built interior lineman (probably either a DT or OG). Not sure, but might’ve been JC DT Nathan Mageo.
    – a leaner built lineman (probably either a DL or OT).
    – definitely a WR or DB. Looked as tall or taller than Wadsworth.

  366. chawan_cut November 23, 2008 12:03 am

saw stephen on the field after the game. he left the idaho mascot hanging when he came around to shake everyone’s hands. hehe.
this is the same mascot that was trying to talk to the k5 truck driver and then got hit in the head by the platform that the camera is on.

  367. chawan_cut November 23, 2008 12:04 am

my friends said that UH should sue all the weather people. they greatly impacted the turnstile count. look how many people didn’t show up.

  368. chawan_cut November 23, 2008 12:17 am

oh, good to see mike, stephen and ferd all rushing to get the best spot to rush the field for stories.
someone and her camera were missing though.

  369. Jason November 23, 2008 12:18 am

Weatherpeople give mathematics a bad name when they are so off on their predictions. Well, it deals with computers too, so I say blame the computer scientists. 😉

Remember the controversy that the Idaho cheerleaders were involved in earlier this year? Well, some of their dance routines tonight were … they were provocative. Maybe a better word to describe it starts with an S and rhymes with “putty.” (No, not sputty.) I’m glad our cheerleaders are always classy and tasteful.

  370. chawan_cut November 23, 2008 12:19 am

oh yeah, there were “sooo” many fans there that i saw kekoa trying to give away tickets and he couldn’t. he probably made the scalpers mad though for undercutting them..

  371. al November 23, 2008 12:19 am

kapakahi…..please inform d1 that binoculars can be effective.

    thanks for the info.

  372. Jason November 23, 2008 12:23 am

Speaking of tickets, I just bought my ticket for tomorrow’s volleyball game. I do wish they would let me use Discover, though. Anyways, the ticket is bought, and I will be there. Throw in Monday night’s basketball game, and that’s a nice series of three games to attend. And if you attended Thursday and Friday’s volleyball games, then you’ve been really busy. 🙂

    Good night!

  373. al November 23, 2008 12:27 am

nice game……offense’s timing is getting there.
nice to see how the qb looks off defenders and comes back to his intended target, lane td bomb.
    short passing game looks better.
ran efficiently, although, i wish we would run more “tampa lefts and rights” just to keep the de’s honest, too.
hey, what? no shovel pass tonight and inside screens?

  374. al November 23, 2008 12:28 am

the defense statistically had a great game too.

take away that opening drive and we stuffed em for less than 200 yds the remainder of the game.

  375. d1島 November 23, 2008 12:35 am

    al,

    Nevah need binos.

One prospect walked right past me to his seat about 6 seats over.

    Great game…

    Corn chowder was great, too.

    Oyasumina-tsai….

  376. al November 23, 2008 12:39 am

    did you get his name???

  377. MIke November 23, 2008 12:43 am

Wot, Chawan, you didn’t get thrill out of seeing Princess Stan?

    Yeah, me neither…

  378. Pomai November 23, 2008 12:45 am

TChahng is the winner, not only did he win but he hit it right on the head, good call.

  379. LizKauai (iPhone) November 23, 2008 12:50 am

Nitey nite and sweet Warrior dreams come true!

  380. Kekoa November 23, 2008 2:15 am

C_C ~ Sad that a Tsaiko asked for tickets to tonight’s game tells me he will pick it up at the t-gate. Then he calls us at the t-gate to say they won’t be going to the game!

Too late to even ‘give’ them away! 4 discounted tickets…wasted, Grrr.
