Tuesday report

By Stephen Tsai on October 11, 2011

The Warriors had a creative practice today, working on the strategies they expect to use against San Jose State Friday, as well as unveiling some new wrinkles. Also: • Kawika Borden, who has recovered from hip and ankle injuries to emerge as a dynamic special-team player, has been added to the 64-player travel roster. • Defensive end Tavita Woodard also will travel. • Not sure if this is significant, but the players yelled, “automatic,” as Kenton Chun jogged onto the […]

No rest for the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on October 9, 2011

It”s the Sunday of  a bye weekend, but several Warriors, led by co-captains Richard Torres and Bryant Moniz, are working out on their own today. As Moniz said earlier this week: Sunday is “the best time to work out … because in my mind, my opponent is not working out on Sundays. I’m trying to get better than him.”

Just win, baby

By Stephen Tsai on October 8, 2011

Love him or hate him, there was no denying Al Davis’ passion for football and single-minded pursuit of winning. There were thin threads between Davis’ Raiders and the Warriors, such as the black-themed uniform colors and the need for speed. His greatest influence was inspiring others to think outside the proverbial box, that being different can sometimes be better. And his finger-to-the-establishment style was embraced, creating a fan base that became a Raider Nation. In the 1970s, Davis was the […]

Freaky Friday

By Stephen Tsai on October 7, 2011

With a bye this weekend and the next game set for next Friday in San Jose, today became “Game-Plan Friday” for the Warriors, the time of the week when they implement the strategies that will be used against the coming opponent. The Warriors spent an hour reviewing videos and discussing the game plan, then went out to Ching field for 75 minutes of practice and another 15 minutes of sprints. They will not practice this weekend. The Warriors began crafting […]

Scout Bowl

By Stephen Tsai on October 6, 2011

UH’s redshirts and developing players today competed in a 25-play scrimmage known as the Scout Bowl. Offense did well, with Jeremy Higgins, Kevin Spain and Stump Godfrey combining for 11-of-19 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. But safety Bubba Poueu-Luna had a big scrimmage, coming up with two interceptions — including one returned 30  yards for a touchdown — and making a sack. Passing • Jeremy Higgins — 7 of 10 for 69  yards, one touchdown, one interception. • […]

They are expected to be cleared to practice Tuesday, and will be available to play in the Oct. 14 nationally televised road game against San Jose State. The Warriors depart Oct. 12. • Middle linebacker George Daily-Lyles was not able to practice today while recovering from a strained knee. • Right slotback Miah Ostrowski said he will be available to play against San Jose […]

Class action

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2011

Here’s a progress report on the Warriors’ 2011 recruiting class: Initial signings: • Junior Alexis, defensive tackle — The plan was for Alexis to join UH as a grayshirt in January. But in the last week of July, Miami sneaked in, and made an offer. Alexis went there before UH could make a counter-offer to bring him in for training camp. • Justin Alo, quarterback — Also a gray-shirt commitment, Alo is not eligible to join the Warriors in January. […]
