Wednesday report

• Middle linebacker Corey Paredes and center Matagisila Lefiti have both been diagnosed with sprained PCLs. They are expected to be cleared to practice Tuesday, and will be available to play in the Oct. 14 nationally televised road game against San Jose State. The Warriors depart Oct. 12.

• Middle linebacker George Daily-Lyles was not able to practice today while recovering from a strained knee.

• Right slotback Miah Ostrowski said he will be available to play against San Jose State. He has missed the past four games because of a foot injury. Ostrowski and Justin Clapp, who has 22 catches as the replacement, will split reps.

• Quarterback Stump Godfrey, who was on personal leave because of a family emergency, resumed practicing today.

• The Warriors believe they have corrected their problems with blocked PATs and FGs. Six have been blocked this year, with all attributed to either a breakdown in protection because of inexperienced personnel or poor snap-to-kick timing.

• The Scout Bowl is scheduled for tomorrow morning. It will be a full-contact, 35-minute scrimmage (quarterbacks are not allowed to be hit). Bryant Moniz and Royce Pollard will coach the offense; Paredes and Richard Torres will coach the defense. First snap should be about 8 a.m.

Watching a San Jose game recently, looks like a new field turf was installed. Or did they just spray paint over the old natural turf?

    808Bowler:

yep.. looks like SJSU has found their legs and are starting to play as a team. They lost badly to Stanford, tied with UCLA 17-17 at the end of the third quarter when size started to matter and UCLA’s ground game ground them down to a 27-17 finish. The next week, they almost beat Nevada but their pass into the endzone in the waning seconds of the game got intercepted and they fell 14-17. The next two weeks they went on to beat NaMaSU and Colorado State… They will have a bit of a swagger when the Warriors roll into town.

    —–

i’m impressed with “How Fast” Stanford, Washington, even WSU have righted or re-elevated their worst-in-class sinking ships and Oregon, Oregon St. before them– i’m guessing it helps to have sig. budgets, good infrastructure and D-1 Class athletes — then it comes down to schemes and coaching staffs …

    The newer teams like Colorado & Utah (AZ & ASU before them) might take a while to get a solid foundation;

Hawai’i dropped and recovered pretty fast @ FVAppen, BNash

    RE: Calm ‘Sleepy’ Tomey

i’m guessing the Assistant’s Job — even though he’s clearly enjoying it, doesn’t have the every-second, every play intensity of the HC’s job, whether calling plays or not …

When he was on BC a couple of days ago, he was just as intense and forceful as ever … (even made BC sound meek)

    … i think it’s a good bet that JJ ends his coaching career here, too;

although he’s always liked Houston … [Tomey, Mouse …Mack, Gib]

Once you’ve already made enough money …

Coaching on a Good Staff in your favorite place IS a Good Deal …

That’s ‘Your Favorite Job & Past Time in Your Favorite Place’ …

Justin Vele’s unko was at practice…next time he should come to the field side of the fence.

  60. madeinhawaii October 5, 2011 9:50 am

It would be interesting to see JJ, McMackin, Tomey, Mouse and other retired coaches as a consortium of mentors to young up and coming OC, DC, QC, WR-C, etc. Each can be the “head coach” for a particular game or two — determined in the pre-season … let the OC and DC call the shots, intervening only when deemed necessary.

  61. madeinhawaii October 5, 2011 9:53 am

They probably could start up some kind of coaching clinic here … with golf benefits before and after to raise funds for their charities.

  76. Derek October 5, 2011 10:27 am

Stephen, I never heard about Ben Clarkie until recently. Is there any highlight fim on him? I noticed he is from the state of Colorado. Also, Dustin Adams, 2012 recruit is from North Dakota. These guys are not from hot bed communities or states that have big time football. Did Gordy Shaw recruit these guys? Now I know these big farm boys are huge, but I’m not certain about their talent level and their athleticism. What did the coaches see that these guys are good for our program? I don’t want to stereotype them, but like I said it is a fact that N.Dakota and Colorado are not known for having a lot FBS recruits. On a per capita basis Hawaii is way up there in Division IA prospects. Where does N.D. and Col. rank? Still, I hope Dustin and Ben will turn out to be future contributers for the team.

Thanks for the 2011 recruits progress report. I enjoyed that very much. In your opinion,

who are the top 2011 recuits who have produced the most so far? Obviously, Mike Edwards is probably at the top of the list. If you were to put a grade on it, what grade would you give to the top 5 or any of the others. I know redshirts can’t be evaluated because they’re sitting out the year, but I’d also like your opinion on their potential based on what you’ve seen in practice. In other words, who are the “future” stars. Thanks a lot.

  88. haka October 5, 2011 11:07 am

Great to hear some of the walking wounded are cleared. Scout Bowl should be fun. Lots of talent there.

Also good to hear of the special teams corrections. Correcting the blocking seems the easiest aspect to rectify. The biggest concern is the lag from snap to kick and the lack of height of the kick. Good to hear they at least seem to think they have addressed all the issues. We’ll see at game time. They have to be committed and confident!

    Go Warriors!

Garrett Gilbert, the Longhorns quarterback who lost his starting job less than two games into the season, has elected to transfer. UT has provided him an unconditional release. UT did not say where Gilbert would transfer. There were some reports on Twitter that Gilbert was spotted at SMU’s practice in Dallas today.

    October 5th, 2011 at 10:27 am

Now I know these big farm boys are huge, but I’m not certain about their talent level and their athleticism. What did the coaches see that these guys are good for our program?”

you’re kidding right. you think coaches recruit without noticing something that would be a fit for the program?

  105. WarrriorMojo October 5, 2011 12:09 pm

Yeah, what’s with the “big farm boys” reference? I “know” you well enough from your posts to know that you meant no harm, but that’s a pretty inappropriate term. Unless you like Hawaii kids to be called “pineapple heads” or something.

And let’s let our coaches evaluate talent rather than accepting Scout et al as the supreme source of knowledge. There’s way to many examples where our coaches –THESE coaches, right now — showed they know how to evaluate talent. Nobody’s perfect — except Chris Peterson, apparently — but our coaches do an excellent job.

I wonder if I can use dashes in a third sentence in a row — probably not.

  106. WarrriorMojo October 5, 2011 12:12 pm

Aw, yes, it should be “sources” because of the “et al” and I do know the difference between “to” and “too” and “two”. And “tu” for that matter.

Will Kevin Spain play in the Scout Bowl? He really looked good until he injured his shoulder…

  118. madeinhawaii October 5, 2011 12:46 pm

injured his shoulder.. then injured his face… We had a QB who was injury-prone like that… hope Spain doesn’t turn out that way, though.

  119. Slugger October 5, 2011 1:16 pm

Spain was throwing today in the 2nd half of practice. Hope he works at it. He’s gonna have stiff competition from Stump & Jeremy who work with the scout team a lot.

DPK, we all should go to practice tomorrow.

And, No, you really should not be taking pictures or videos of practice. If Derek Inouchi is there, he’ll remind you.

There was someone taking video on the lift by the goal post, but, yeah, there was someone standing by the fence taking video holding a camera on her shoulder. Wonder if Chris Williams was on top of the dorm?

  135. A-House October 5, 2011 1:50 pm

I am personally elated to see UH coaches reach out far and wide to recruit student athletes where they did not thread 2 or 3 years ago.

This may be one of the key ingredient to forming a core of more talented players as it moves into the MWC and stiffer out-of-conference opponents in the near future.

Wonder what East Coast or mid-West school Jim D will schedule with the Navy game in 2013.

In the summer of ’88 I sat in a class listening to an instructor brag to us about how she plunked down $55,000 to purchase a Quadritek 1200 photo typesetting machine. She proclaimed that everyone in town will now have to come to her to get all of their typesetting done but, promised to give our class a discount.

One of the students in the class said, “What about that Macintosh thingie the other room. Couldn’t that do typesetting for us?”

“Only if you wanted to play ‘make believe’ and not be taken seriously in the printing industry,” the instructor sarcastically replied.

I’ve often wondered whatever happened to that $55,000 door stop.

    RIP Jobs.

139 ~ You’re probably right. These schedules are in progress years in advance…at least they are supposed to be… You can’t always schedule a powderpuff game for Homecoming. (No offense, PP.)

When I was at NAU, more often than not, we’d have Montana scheduled for Homecoming. We lost most of those games to Montana; they were the best in the Big Sky. Now that Weber State has The Beast, the Wildcats are the tough competition in the league. 🙂

Those Montana fans traveled well. They drive in and tailgate out of their RVs. They’d have their spots reserved a year in advance. Guess that gave NAU a good gate for that Homecoming game.

#104 You tell me, there are lots of examples of poor evaluations of recruits that did not pan out at Hawaii. Some from Hawaii and some from the mainland. Some examples:

    1) Kevin Konrath from Illinois – he came over here and didn’t even make it through the first year, much less the 1st semester.

    2) Andrew Pearson from Virginia – he came over for fall camp and left not too long after that and he never played a game for Hawaii. He eventually played at Virginia.

    3) Corey Nielson, QB – he stayed for 3 years including a redshirt, but he transferred this year. Many said he wasn’t a Division I level player. He only saw mop up playing time against team that we blew out, like Charleston Southern.

    4) Corey Lau, Kailua, SB – he came to Hawaii on scholarship. After 2 years, one a redshirt year, he never played a down in a game. He left the program because he knew he couldn’t make it in Division I.

There are tons of people who tried to make it on the team, but from high school to major college football is a whole different level, just like going from college to the NFL. Recruiting is not an exact science, but I just want to know what the coaches saw in giving these players a scholarship offer. Of course, they think they can play, because they offered the scholarship. That doesn’t mean anything at this point. The big question is “can they play”? I suppose we will find out in due time.

Note, in the 2011 recruiting, the state of North Dakota produced 1 player who got a Divsion I scholarship. To me, that’s not good odds. But, this is a mute point. The players have committed to Hawaii so we support them. As a UH football fan who deeply wish for unparalled success, we are free to express our opinions through this blog. Thanks for the opportunity.

  168. Couch potato October 5, 2011 3:16 pm

Derek, easy to second guess in hindsight. just accept that the coaches are doing their job. if a recruit doesn’t pan out then that’s life. also get many recruits who don’t start or even get much playing time but that doesn’t mean the coach made a bad recruiting decision. recruited players contribute to the team in so many ways.

look at Corey Nielson, though he didn’t become what many hoped him to be he did so much for the team. he was on the scout team. he offered competition to make others better. you going fault him for that?

yeah, it’s not exact science, but let them do their job and not second guess them unless you are some kind of super duper psychic.

Remember Dustin Adams, from Tsai’s June 5th, 2011 blog?

    “Out of the cold”

    June 5th, 2011

    By Stephen Tsai

In a whirlwind courtship, it took less than 48 hours for Dustin Adams to fall in love with the UH football program.

“I went up there last week, on Monday through Wednesday, and I toured the college and met all of the coaches,” said Adams, an offensive lineman at Minot High in North Dakota. “It felt good. That’s why I made my decision. Yep, I decided to become a Warrior.”

Adams will sign a letter of intent in February, then join the Warriors in July 2012.

As a junior in 2010, Adams played right tackle. He was named to the All-State team. One college scouting service rated Adams as North Dakota’s top offensive lineman.

A few years ago, a former associate alerted Gordy Shaw, now UH’s line coach, to a promising offensive lineman. At the time, Adams had just completed the eighth grade. This year, Shaw was reminded to check on Adams’ progress.

Adams said he is “almost 6-5” and weighs 285 pounds

    RIP Steve Jobs

After seeing the iPhone Siri web page and video yesterday, I commented on how far technology has come and the size of the device/computer today, in this case, smartphone size. The Siri page:

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri.html

This reminded me of a 1987 Apple video called “Knowledge Navigator”, which was a futuristic tablet size computer and personal asisstant as shown in this 5 minute video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRH8eimU_20

I was getting a little bored watching it, but realize it is 24 years old now and the actor could do everything but slip it into his pocket as he leaves. : ) While I do not know how much of the concepts presented was Steve Job’s vision, he was the one to finally make it happen — or bring us to the brink in the current form of the iPhone and iPad2.

I would add this to Steve Job’s credits and accomplishments: Introduced the “Knowledge Navigator” in 2011.

I’m sure the coaches have their own criteria of what players fit into each positions.. a criteria that has minimum height, weight, frame, footwork, posture, hands, football IQ, speed, motor, and such to start with. They may deviate from the curve if they get good feedback about someone from a trusted source. Unlike the top AQ teams, however, it would be rare for the Warriors to get that built-to-fit type freshman. Our team is more likely to get the ‘build-to-fit’ type potential freshman player. Unfortunately, not all players fill out like Ikaika Alama-Francis or even Pilares. With Hefferman’s conditioning programs, though, I think we will start to experience a greater percentage of success.

Sometimes we get lucky with homesick transfers, or walk-ons that weren’t your proto-typical player but who came back more grounded and mature.

I started out with a TRS-80 (sometimes called the Trash 80) with a supplemented 32k of memory!!!

I know OLDIE’s wife used to use a Radio Shack with 8″ floppies!.

Before the TRS-80s came in, I had an IBM memory typewriter (before the mag-cards came into vogue) and also one (forgot the brand) that used paper tape to record on!

Now I have a iMac and Mac laptop.

    RIP Steve Jobs.

Mahalo Kea Akua for Steve Jobs…

His Commencement speech to Stanford is a classic:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF8uR6Z6KLc&feature=featured

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.”

  188. tommui October 5, 2011 4:29 pm

Of course recruiting is not an exact science. Even on the professional level after watching players at the university level, there are mistakes made – Ryan Leaf comes to mind. Our coaches look at players playing in high schools – what – 3 or 4 years playing experience.

On the pro level, the scouts are looking at players with around 7 years of playing experience.

So some recruits may not pan out – just as some draftees do not.

All I can say is that second guessing is a fact of life and we have that freedom. All I asked was a question, an honest question. Jeez, have a life. I support the coaches and the players. I just asked a question because I’d like to know what they think and what they saw on their films. Call it inquisitive because I like recruiting and recruiting is the life blood of the program. That’s all. Let’s move on. One snap and clear.

  212. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 5, 2011 7:58 pm

    #213,

Yeah me 2. We keep hearing that “PAT/FG problems have been addressed” from the coaches.

Usually I let my “fan” side take over and I just believe…but this time I gotta see it first.

  213. Darren October 5, 2011 8:13 pm

Anxiously awaiting any news on DT recruits. Our current two deeps were highly regarded recruits from our own backyard. Really hurt coming so close to the ones we lost to the Pac 10/12 as those seemed to be similar caliber players. I know we have some promising underclassmen and our coaches’ ability to develop talent has been quite remarkable. It’d still be really nice to land some recruits with similar qualifications to two deep rotation. Transfers/JC similar to Kaniela would be fine..

Word on the street is that the Noga brothers, once again, did not make it into the Circle of Honor.

  224. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 5, 2011 11:32 pm

    #222,

I’m sure being an insider you know why the Noga’s won’t be nominated right? If not I’ll fill you in later on when I see you.

  225. Stephen Tsai October 5, 2011 11:33 pm

    Re: Recruiting.

Don’t expect any commitments until December, at the earliest.

Most recruits coming in for the BYU game.

And commits might be even later, if at all, if they don’t resolve the head coach’s contract.

Like I said, whether UH keeps Mack or not, it needs to make some sort of decision soon because the indecision is going to cost them recruits and coaches.

  226. Stephen Tsai October 5, 2011 11:39 pm

    Re: Nogas.

I know they’ve been in trouble before, but I’ve been a paid writer for 32 years, and Niko Noga is one of the best UH players I’ve ever seen play.

I know one of the Nogas drove a committee member insane, and that guy probably will never vote him in. Still, there should be weight to what you do on a field, and the Nogas were among the best.

  227. Stephen Tsai October 5, 2011 11:43 pm

I’ve been to the halls of honor at Washington, Nevada, Houston, Alabama, Michigan State, etc., and they really celebrate their past.

Walk around the Stan Sheriff Center, and you would think UH didn’t have any football success the past two decades.

  228. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 5, 2011 11:48 pm

    #227,

From what I heard it goes a little deeper and has to do with some “current affiliations” the Noga’s have too.

But I agree they should be inducted. It’s pretty much common sense to vote them in.

J.R.’s samba was the highlight of the night for me! By far! As Len pointed out, this dance has been the ruination of so many male celebritie-s on this show. An incredibly difficult dance that has gotten the best of contestant-s over the years. However, this was J.R.’s moment! That hip action, those smooth moves. He just owned it and seemed to have the time of his life. He has a natural rhythm and a real sense of musicality-. You cannot be shy in this dance. I call the samba, the diva dance! He came out there and shook it for it was worth. Well done! How can you not love this guy and the joy he brings to the show.Congratula-tions, Jose Rene! You should have gotten a perfect score!best diablo3 gold

However, I appologize, because I do not give credence to your whole strategy, all be it refreshing none the less. It appears to me that your remarks are generally not totally rationalized and in simple fact you are your self not fully certain of your argument. In any event I did enjoy looking at it.
