Monday musings

The Warriors resumed practicing today following a two-day break for the bye weekend.

Here are the updates:

• Linebackers Corey Paredes and George Daily-Lyles, center Matagisila Lefiti, running back Sterling Jackson, and slotback Miah Ostrowski all practiced.

sjm2Paredes

• Lefiti worked out at right guard; London Sapolu was the center.

• Jordan Loeffler was the left tackle, although Clayton Laurel is expected to practice tomorrow.

• Andrew Faaumu moved from right guard to left guard. The usual starting left guard, Brett Leonard, is expected to be cleared to practice tomorrow. He was dazed from a cheap-shot hit by a Louisiana Tech player.

• Both Kenton Chun and Tyler Hadden will be on the 64-player travel squad for Friday’s game against San Jose State.

• After practice, former Alabama/UH/Kaiser kicker Peter Kim tutored Chun.

Go Warriors! Sapolu did a good job last week. Hope he gets some playing time this week.

  14. CoolEthan October 10, 2011 5:15 am

JJ preferred the latter part of the season for the bye, but this middle season bye could have more benefits with the teams current win/loss status

  15. CoolEthan October 10, 2011 5:17 am

Will be amusing to watch tonight how they open the Bears/Lions game with the intro. They had to adapt, adjust and go forward with limited crunch time to make a decision.

  16. Garret October 10, 2011 6:07 am

I think that flying to San Jose on Wednesday makes sense for the team. There is no elevation to have to adjust to and the distance traveled is pretty much the shortest for the Warriors. Having 2 nights in San Jose before the game is better than the schools with smaller budgets that fly in the night before a game at Aloha Stadium.

I’d rather the Warriors get in the extra practice in Hawaii with the scout team involved than miss classes adn wait around an extra day in San Jose…especially after what happened in Vegas.

  17. CoolEthan October 10, 2011 6:13 am

Garret, That’s how I see it, regarding when to arrive. There is the commercial direct flight to san jose through Hawaiian air. In fact, a walk through Friday am is do-able with the late day kick off. More quality practices at home. They already know the SJSU turf scenario

  18. Shoko October 10, 2011 6:14 am

    Morning folks!

Could it be that a week in Vegas and possibly being distracted by the bright lights of Sin City was the reason for the upset?

  19. Garret October 10, 2011 6:14 am

    SJSU record so far:

    L @Stanford 57-3

    L @UCLA 27-17

    L Nevada 17-14

    W NMSU 34-24

    W @Colorado State 38-31

    L @BYU 29-16

SJSU is 2-4, but they have plated a much tougher schedule than UH so far and didn’t play a D-IAA school to boost their record, so they should not be taken for granted. The biggest concern for me is that they seem to play much better at home than on the road. SJSU has played 2 home games. They beat NMSU by 10 and they lost to Nevada by 3…the same Nevada team that beat UNLV 37-0.

The best thing in UH’s favor is that SJSU has a short week to prepare since they played BYU on Saturday while UH had 2 weeks to prepare for them.

  20. Garret October 10, 2011 6:18 am

Note that SJSU’s star RB was a big reason for their good play against NMSU, Nevada, etc., but he was hurt during their Colorado State game. So, SJSU went from a strong RB to their backup RBs and they ran for just 70 yards against BYU.

If Rutley’s ankle isn’t recovered enough for him to play, SJSU will probably be forced to rely on their passing game like they used against BYU. SJSU has a good TE (Ryan Otten) who had 9 catches for 108 yards against BYU and they have some decent WRs including Grigsby (11 catches for 88 yards vs. BYU).

  21. Garret October 10, 2011 6:28 am

I thought that the Big East would stop at 8 or 9 football schools but it looks like they want to go all the way to 12 schools.

Big East authorized conference to engage in formal discussions to include 12 football playing schools

Big East authorization by presidents was in morning teleconference today. Question is which 12 do they end up?

Navy AD Chet Gladchuk told @CBSSports had no reaction to Big East to 12. “We’re continuing to monitor league & it remains an option”

    http://twitter.com/#!/McMurphyCBS

  22. Garret October 10, 2011 6:34 am

Interesting and surprising tidbit in the ESPN story on Big East expansion is that the WCC might take Air Force’s non-football teams. Air Force is quite different than all the private schools in the WCC…

The WAC would take Air Force, especially with the addition of Denver. The Valley isn’t currently interested in expanding. But the WCC is also trying to be a player here and would listen if the Falcons wanted a home for its other sports after taking BYU this season.

    Morn’g Tsaikos,

Just wondering with all these Conference movement:

If WAC is interested in AF (all but football) wouldn’t it have been better for UH to stay and not pay any travel subsidy to Big West?

If Big 12 is continuing to expand hope they take Louisville and Cincinnati to further down grade Big East and not thinking of taking AF and BSU.

It will be interesting to see where Navy, Central Florida, East Carolina and Army will end up.

    Most likely Big East…

The tailgate by the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California will have the Green cups again… $10 per cup (all you can drink beer) so no need cooler. Big savings to tailgaters. Best to park in lot next to the tailgate site (see hccnc.com for map)…2 min walk to stadium… Tailgate starts at 2pm…no big tent this year so bring plenty sunscreen and hats for sure….anyway…L&L will be selling local food…. I’ll be there along with hawnstln. Hope to see others at the tailgate.

  37. mikey October 10, 2011 9:05 am

If TCU can move or not move from MWC to Big East to Big 12 in a days work.

UH should still continue to look where is the best possibilty to save $$$ and get back with WAC (not paying any Travle Subsidy) for rest of the sports.

Now that WAC is looking for AF for all but football sports program.

  38. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 9:05 am

    Mikey,

I think UH is counting on better turnout for volleyball and basketball with the changes. That would mean more $$ at the turnstiles and possibly in TV revenues as PPV and Live telecasts will have to be renegotiated with all these changes. Hopefully the increased revenues will cover the subsidized travel costs. On the other side of the coin, UH’s travel costs are reduced considerably for the non-football sports. Maybe it will all balance out in favor of UH… we just have to wait and see.

  39. koakane October 10, 2011 9:05 am

monday monday good sunny day 808

mih thanks much for WARRIOR BAEK DONG-SOO series. finished it and will there be more latter #28 kinda hinted.

  40. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 9:08 am

    Mikey,

I believe the Big West is considering adding back Men’s Volleyball into their sports offereing. It will all depend on whether or not they can get an automatic berth into the post season play offs for their conference winner. If so, that would be another benefit of joining the Big West.

  41. markazulu October 10, 2011 9:08 am

mih:’That would mean more $$ at the turnstiles and possibly in TV revenues as PPV and Live telecasts’

I don’t know about more $$ and TV revenue by going to Big West? to Off-set Travel subsidy

It maybe better for Wahine volleyball and baseball, but for both Men’s and Womens Basketball, I think WAC is ranked higher.

  45. mikey October 10, 2011 9:28 am

    안녕하세요 😆

  50. uhfan09 October 10, 2011 9:42 am

Kicking game for hawaii its not the kickers fault its the protection. Nuff said start sapolu way better snaps and more hustle.

  51. Couch potato October 10, 2011 9:51 am

i don’t think the protection makes a kicker hit the goal post. it’s also timing from the snap to placement to kick approach.

and then there’s concern from others about the kickoff distance. that also has nothing to do with protection.

  52. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 9:56 am

    koakane,

After all that immersion…still cannot understand Korean?

    me too..

my wife can understand more than half now…

  53. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 9:58 am

    Mikey…

The Big West may not be higher ranked in BB but the Winner still gets to go to the Dance… and if the Warriors can be the winner more often? Ka-CHING!… Bow fans may enjoy the change of scenery in terms of competition… and being all Cali, more fans may start to travel to and fro.

  54. uhfan09 October 10, 2011 10:02 am

maybe one hit the goal post was the kickers fault but what about the others.

  55. showthemsupport October 10, 2011 10:03 am

Kicking protection IS the main concern. Imagine what a kicker would be thinking if he is getting no protection from his line. Both Hadden and Chun have had blocked kicks… so the line is the common factor. In terms of picking between the two…. Hadden is the clear choice. Much stronger and appears to be much more fundamentally sound. He has a solid 4 years a head of him.

And as far as kick offs are concerned, Hadden is more than capable of banging it out the end zone every time, but from what I have understood it has become part of the “game plan to pop it up”. Its clear that many special team issues still need to be address, but to put sole blame on the kicking seems to be a little irrational.

  56. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 10:03 am

    Koakane..

you should also try dramafever.com they have some other videos.. like CHUNO…

  57. Couch potato October 10, 2011 10:08 am

just pointing out that everything isn’t based on protection.

  58. Couch potato October 10, 2011 10:10 am

also, many have mentioned that the trajectory is low.

and no one is putting sole blame on the kicking.

  59. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 10:12 am

    Mikey,

Besides… I don’t think the new WAC is all that highly ranked. Aren’t they seeking an exemption so that the conference winner can still go to the big Dance? I don’t think they will have the minimum number of teams who have played together 5 years to qualify for an automatic berth.

  60. Couch potato October 10, 2011 10:16 am

correct me if i’m wrong experts, but if a kicker can kick it out of the endzone then the kicker has a strong leg right? well if he has a strong leg couldn’t he kick it high and make it land near the 5 yard line instead of the 15 yard line? wouldn’t a higher longer kick get more air time thus allowing the defenders to get downfield and make the tackle nearer the 10-15 yard line instead of the 25-35 yard line as what is happening now? just a thought.

  61. mikey October 10, 2011 10:20 am

    mih,

If WAC don’t qualify for auto berth they are in big trouble.

Hope fans travel well to all West Coast games especially for all the Warrior fans living in California!

  62. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 10:23 am

    Mikey,

Which is why Hawaii had to jump ship and BYU went elsewhere. Too much uncertainty.

  63. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 10:24 am

Even if the WAC manages to survive, it will take at least 5 years to regain much of the ground it has lost. Probably more.

  64. Garret October 10, 2011 10:32 am

According to the Boston Globe, the schools that the Big East agreed on today were:

    Football only:

    BSU, Navy, Air Force

    Full members:

    Central Florida, Temple, SMU, Houston

The idea will be to present the overall plan for consideration among the membership in the next few days, approve it, with the idea of forming a 12-team league in football and a 16- to 18-team league in basketball.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/colleges/extras/colleges_blog/2011/10/big_east_expans.html

  65. Garret October 10, 2011 10:32 am

Houston *or* SMU will be invited to the Big East unless one Big East team leaves, then both will be invited:

Houston or SMU would also be part of the package and if Louisville, which has been projected as a target of further expansion by the Big 12, were to leave, both Texas schools would join the conference. Such a move would give the Big East a Western-dominated division consisting of Boise State, Air Force and the two Texas schools

  66. Garret October 10, 2011 10:37 am

So, the SEC cannot decide if it wants Missouri, West Virginia, or some other school that hasn’t shown interest yet.

BYU cannot go to the Big 12 until Missouri’s situation is determined.

Louisville may be invited to the Big 12 depending on the negotiations between BYU and the Big 12.

Both SMU and Houston only get invitations if Louisville or West Virginia leave the Big East.

Big East would have a division with:

    Boise State

    Air Force

    SMU

    Houston

Travel for those schools to play each other wouldn’t be too bad, so they would only make 2 or so trips per year.

If CUSA and MWC get raided like that, UH is best served for the MWC/CUSA merger to happen, with both conferences ending with 10 teams. That way instead of a conference title game, there can be a title game between the 2 conference regular-season champions for a BCS bowl spot.

  67. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 10:41 am

A lot of recruits must be having some decision making crisis because of all the “what ifs” that are being tossed around.

  68. jm2375 October 10, 2011 10:45 am

Western Athletic Conference includes LaTech which is in the Central Time Zone and NaMaSu, USU & Idaho in the Mountain Time Zone

Big East includes BSU, USAFA in the Mountain Time Zone & SMU, Houston in the Central Time Zone.

Can’t we just rename the d$mn conferences already – Conference 1, Conference 2, etc? 😈

  69. jm2375 October 10, 2011 10:48 am

Oh yeah, and the Pac-12 now includes Colorado & Utah, in the Mountain Time Zone. *tsigh*

  73. Derek October 10, 2011 11:27 am

Good decision to take 2 kickers. It might come down to a field goal to either win, or lose it.

I feel this Friday’s game against San Jose St. will be very close. History has shown that the games in San Jose St. are tight til the very end, even then Colt Brennan was playing in 2007. If I recall, the game went into overtime and it was a muddy field. I do remember that C.J. Hawthorne caught a TD pass in that game. He’s one of my favorite players. So humble and so positive.

  74. Bowwar October 10, 2011 11:37 am

Doesn’t make sense to bring two kickers, especially if we don’t block for them…

  75. showthemsupport October 10, 2011 11:39 am

Bowwar, if this was like facebook, I would Like your comment! 🙂

  76. Garret October 10, 2011 11:43 am

With a limited travel roster, I’m surprised that UH is bringing two kickers. Maybe there are things (like kickoffs) that one kicker does better than the kicker considered the “main” kicker.

  77. Garret October 10, 2011 11:43 am

It looks like the bye week was very helpful and lots of injured Warriors may be able to play this week. They should be even more effective given the rest for their injuries.

  78. Garret October 10, 2011 11:44 am

Western Athletic Conference includes LaTech which is in the Central Time Zone and NaMaSu, USU & Idaho in the Mountain Time Zone

Big East includes BSU, USAFA in the Mountain Time Zone & SMU, Houston in the Central Time Zone.

The Big 10 has 12 schools

The Big 12 may stay at 10 schools

  79. showthemsupport October 10, 2011 11:47 am

Chun wouldnt kickoff for hadden, if anyone were to be his back up on kick offs it would be dunachie.

  80. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 12:03 pm

Kickers… it’s all about “attitude, altitude and aptitude”

  81. Kekoa October 10, 2011 12:17 pm

Slugger ~ The Lilikoi experiment was extremely successful. 😎

  82. WarriorMojo October 10, 2011 12:22 pm

Although bowstock/warriorfanny or whatever he was calling himself at the time disagreed, it was clear to me from the Spring game that Chun was the best guy on FGs and placekicks. His kicks just took off and gained trajectory faster than the other guys. He also was the most accurate, going pretty much dead center on all of his kicks. Might’ve missed one from what I remember.

Hadden’s kicks were almost, but not quite, as good. His kicks were noticeably lower and slower to gain height. His also seemed to be a bit less accurate, with even his makes not always being dead center.

Niiro was clearly behind the other two in accuracy. Seemed to have more power to get his kicks up than Hadden, but was inconsistent on the accuracy.

Now when it comes to kick offs, I can only assume that Hadden can go much deeper than Chun, otherwise Chun would be THE guy.

So the coaches are faced with a dilemma. Do they take the kicker that they have the most confidence in on placekicks so that if we need to kick a 45 yard FG to win the game with three seconds on the clock, we have our best guy for that? Or, are we getting so badly gashed on our kickoffs that we need to take the guy we know can boot it deepest? We may never need to kick a FG and we know for sure that we will be kicking off, but does that mean leave the best FG guy home? Tough questions, and ultimately, that is why two kickers end up on the traveling squad.

Going forward, we as fans can only hope that Hadden, as a freshman, will develop the technique necessary on his placekicks to be THE guy since Chun is one and done, I believe.

  83. Garret October 10, 2011 12:30 pm

Or, are we getting so badly gashed on our kickoffs that we need to take the guy we know can boot it deepest?

    WarriorMojo,

Good analysis in your post and I was kind of hinting in my post that taking 2 kickers only makes sense if Chun was going to be doing the FGs and Hadden the kickoffs. The part I quoted above is the only part I thought I needed to mention something on…Hadden has been the kickoff guy so if we are getting badly gashed now on our kickoffs that wouldn’t change.

  84. WarriorMojo October 10, 2011 12:31 pm

    Re #160

I don’t think it’s quite that easy. This isn’t like golf where you can alter height and trajectory by changing clubs. What you are talking about would require a pretty drastic change in kicking mechanics.

  85. Couch potato October 10, 2011 12:38 pm

now who would’ve thunk it that nearly halfway through the season the talk is about special teams. c’mon Tomey, you can do it.

GO WAHINE on wednesday on ESPNU!

GO WARRIORS on friday on ESPN!

  86. WarriorMojo October 10, 2011 12:42 pm

    Garret:

As always your analysis is incisive. I don’t understand why Hadden has been asked to pooch these kickoffs, if indeed he has. I can only think off two possible explanations. Either we are so confident in our kick coverage that we want to force a return which we believe we WILL smother inside the 20, or we are so worried about our kick coverage that we will pooch it to keep it out of the hands of the other team’s best return guy, even if it means sacrificing field position.

Not sure which it is at this point. We generally haven’t been covering kicks inside the twenty, although I guess we benefited at LaTech by keeping the ball out of the hands of their best returner and even getting a fumble.

WarriorMojo, was that directed to my comment? i figure soccer kickers do it all the time. they can line drive it, pop it up, curve it, or is place kicking that regimented. any kickers out there to chime in?

If a soccer player kicks 4 shots during a match and makes 1, he gets carried off the field on his teammates shoulders.

If a football kicker does that, he gets carried off on a stretcher.

Better to just groove one kick for football.

What some SJSU fans are saying about this week’s game. SJSU best TB Brandon Rutley will be a game day decision… still nursing a sprained ankle although he was doing some running today. Their best corner is out for the season, however, and I’m sure our coaches are planning for some heavy play making against his replacements. Read what some of the fans on this blog say about Hawaii, though.

“Better to just groove one kick for football.”

d1shima, no wonder Hadden has problems, he tries to pop up the kickoffs and line drives the extra points/fg. 😆

just kidding around. wish only the best for our kickers and supporting cast.

  93. Stephen Tsai October 10, 2011 1:44 pm

UH is not acknowledging that Hadden’s PAT was deflected, although it is clear that No. 44 deflected it.

Alas, not all of the kicking problems are because of the kickers.

Air Force looks like they are headed to the Big East for football only. Now that TCU accepted the invite to the Big 12, things will start to change in a hurry. Here’s my cystal ball after TCU.

Big East – West Virginia and South Florida will go to the ACC.

SEC – Missouri will leave the Big 12

Big 12 – Louisville, BYU, and maybe even Boise St. will join.

Mountain West – after Boise St. leaves, Utah St. gets in.

Conference USA – Houston and SMU get invited to the Big East, along with Navy and Army and maybe even East Carolina.

WAC – Louisiana Tech will move to the Conf. USA. New Mexico St. and Idaho will go back to the Sun Belt. San Jose St. “maybe” go to Mountain West or Sun Belt. The WAC Conference will be doomed.

Notre Dame – will be the ony independent, but may decide to join the Big 10 to make it 14 teams in the conference.

  96. maddog50 October 10, 2011 2:00 pm

This is a simple game…one of will. The team takes this one home decisively they get the home town crowd finally against a WAC opponent. Kicker or not…..strong D strong O….and the secret ingredient…..Warrior Heart…..they should and can run them off the field by beating them into submission—–

I know this won’t solve our kicking problem, but we can always drown our sorrows in Lilikoi.

Btw ~ Has anyone ever noticed how coach Tomey seperated himself from coach Mack when the chips were down? Case in point, check out Tomey’s actions during the infamous “Dont Touch Me” blow up.

    Hehehe…“go ‘head, I got your back…from 30 yards away!”

There are several other clips from previous games that show the same reaction from him when things were turning sour. Reminds me of the *Duck & Coiver* drills. Hehehehe…

  114. kapakahi October 10, 2011 4:08 pm

If Mouse leaves, then my guess is that UH would hire a former UH offensive player instead. Possible candidates might include Craig Stutzmann, Ashley Lelie, Inoke Funaki, Timmy Chang, etc.

If 1st year DL Assistant Coach (and former Wildcat DT) Joe Salavea not retained by next coaching staff, I wonder if true frosh starting DT Sani Fuimaono (Punahou Class of 2010) might consider transferring. UH supposedly offered Sani out of high school…but he signed with UA and joined team as greyshirt in Spring 2011…and is already starting at DT. Hmmm!

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 4:14 pm

    #115,

Anae seems like a much better bet. Considering his experience with PASS protecting offensive lines.

He can also recruit and can further our reach into the Polynesian communities.

I am sure he has ties to Mack having been with TTech and obviously has close ties to Tomey. Tomey has spoken very highly of Anae’s capabilities.

The real question is whether or not Anae would even be interested in “coming back home” or looking for other BCS opportunities.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 4:15 pm

  120. hawaiian October 10, 2011 4:32 pm

I’m not much of a JJ (former coach) fan…but I think he will show some interest in the Arizona job!

    I’m just sayin’!

  121. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 4:33 pm

    MIH,

Just my opinion but going into 2012, we can’t afford to be paying “students”. Need some tried and experienced replacements especially if Mouse is leaving.

I think Rolo has been soaking it up and probably more or less able to do it without Mouse at this point. I am confident in Rolo.

I think taking Colt as a GA would be a good idea at some point in time when we have the space.

  122. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 4:39 pm

    IWWTHM

While I agree with you that we would like to have a paid “experienced” coach for the WR Coach position, who besides Mouse? Rolo is the OC/QB Coach. So for Rolo to pick up the slack left by Mouse’s departure, we’d need a QB Coach. Colt might be a good candidate, then. Is Inoke Funaki ready to coach the receivers? Ashley Lelie? Have they been soaking in the teaching of the master (Mouse Davis)?

  123. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 4:40 pm

Think Arizona might go after Mike Leach?

  124. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 4:43 pm

    MIH,

    Can Gordy coach WR?

ST mentioned before that if Rolo were to leave, Gordy would be the OC as he knows the offense quite well.

  125. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 4:44 pm

    #124,

Yep. I bet his name is up there somewhere. If so then I bet Anae gets retained.

  126. RedZone October 10, 2011 4:44 pm

I would try to keep the Mouse. He can’t be replaced.

  127. Stephen Tsai October 10, 2011 4:48 pm

    IWWTHM

I said if Rolo leaves that Brian Smith should be the offensive coordinator.

  128. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 4:55 pm

    edit #125

Gordy OR Smith can coach WR?

And thanks ST for the correction.

  129. d1shima October 10, 2011 4:58 pm

Maybe it’s just me, but how about a former receiver as Receiver Coach?

  130. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 5:06 pm

    #130,

The current receivers coach wasn’t a receiver and that seems to be working out ok.

  131. d1shima October 10, 2011 5:08 pm

He had a track record with Receivers…does Gordy and BSmith?

  132. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 5:13 pm

Well BSmith doesn’t have a track record with running the entire Offense but seems knowledgeable enough to do so if need be.

So my guess is he is probably capable of coaching receivers.

I don’t know how important it is overall that a position coach must have played that position in order to teach it.

  133. anyone care? October 10, 2011 6:09 pm

    Way to go, Mr. A-House!

Prayers continue for the Kymry ohana as they disburse across the country.

  135. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 6:12 pm

Just guessing but IMHO, a WR coach just needs to be thoroughly versed in the ins and outs of each play and the overall strategy behind each play. He has to be able to teach players how to shed blocks, catch the ball, skirt the initial tackle, secure the ball, juke, fake out the defender, read the defensive back’s intention, and make sure they go all out on each play. He has to know what ALL players are capable of doing and take advantage of any unique or special talents that each receiver may have over others.

    What else…

  136. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 6:15 pm

Should the Warriors win out the rest of the season, which of our Coaches will get the first call from some other team regarding a Coordinator or HC job? Rolo, Aranda, or McMackin?

  137. d1shima October 10, 2011 6:46 pm

    Nicely done A-house!

  138. WarriorMojo October 10, 2011 6:55 pm

Well, I for one would love to see Stutzmann back at UH. I saw and heard him coaching the receivers and I thought he was excellent. He could teach guys the fundamentals and techniques that any receiver needs to play that position in ANY system, but was also versed in our offensive scheme as a whole and could explain to his guys how their efforts fit into the overall play even if they weren’t the hot read. And to top it off, he was a player’s coach, supportive and challenging as necessary.

  139. cocobean October 10, 2011 6:55 pm

I can’t see Anae as an improvement over Shaw. At this point in his career, I see him as having earned his PHD in coaching. He has the ability to teach players as well as younger coaches. Look at the results of his work here and through out his career. He still has IT.

Use to worry a lot about conference realignment but not any more. Out of the hands of fans.

We aren’t leaving the WAC unless we go Indy. Just a question of who will be with us after the dust settles. I trust that the UHAD is looking out for our best interest. They should be privy to more info than us fans and should be having discussions with the potential leftovers as how to shape the future WAC. Travel subsides will be the thorniest issue.

  140. WarriorMojo October 10, 2011 6:57 pm

mojo…kick offs. it seemed to be one of two things with our kick offs.

one, we lacked the endzone distance therefore a pooch normally takes longer to come down to earth, thus, allowing the coverage to arrive simultaneously.

two…we respected the opposition’s return men’s potential to bust one on us and therefore opted for a poocher.

three…our coverage alignment and assignment lacked discipline and therefore, we questioned our own abilities to properly cover the kick off.

    and finally…

    four, all of the above.

  156. Garret October 10, 2011 8:12 pm

SDSU is openly trying to get into the Big 12, trying to convince them to expand west and get into California. SDSU and UNLV are the 2 schools I can easiest see UH road games at and both are trying to leave the conference before UH gets in. I didn’t realize that SDSU paid the Big 12’s interim commissioner $65k in 2005-06 to help with a football coaching search.

In SDSU’s case, it could give the Texas-centered Big 12 a new state and new market for recruiting and television viewership. While there has been talk that the Big 12 has been interested in adding Brigham Young, Sterk said he wanted to make sure the Big 12 was aware that San Diego is “as close to Austin (Texas) as Provo, Utah (home of BYU) and a heck of a lot easier to get to.”

“If they look west, who knows what happens?” Sterk said.

garret…isn’t it amazing how all these schools are so unabashed in prostituting themselves.

loyalty to the conference has now become a thing of the past.

  159. markazulu October 10, 2011 8:20 pm

Loyalty is something that lacks now! Sports are becoming ridiculous first the NFL now the NBA an NCAA is getting ridiculous no sense of loyalty teams jumping conferences back an forth a lack of sportsmanship! It feels more like its not about the love of the game any more its all $$$ That drives Football now! I’m still a fan though an I just hope everything gets better for everyone ESPICALLY HAWAI’I!!

By the way It’s either sign Coach Mac or dont but holding off the contract negotiation UNTIL the end of the season isnt good we could not only lose mac but the rest of the coaches an we could take steps back as a program! We’ve seen progress throughout last year an some this year an despite some of the shortcomings of this year an the other 3 seasons before Coach Mac has done a pretty outstanding job so far considering we started from scratch after Coach Jones left. In the span of 3 years we were relevant nationally again! The thing that I understand is though at the end of EVERY Season we have got blown out on National tv Notre Dame, Wisconsin, an Tulsa an INDEED we need to put that to bed because that is UNACCEPTABLE but The pieces are their I think We could be relevant Nationally every year an I also Feel an Hope that WE can compete with ANYONE! An if they wanna at least plan for the future this is not the proper way to do it I say sign Mac to a 2 year extension an in the next 2 years take your time an evaluate who could possibly take over if you do it the way they do it we could lose out on the recruits we have now, the recruits of this class to much risk. But I digress sorry about my rant!

Anyways I’ll keep supporting Hawai’i Go Warriors!!

  160. krump1_AKA_protector October 10, 2011 8:36 pm

    al on #150,

“If you build it…they will come.” If the team gets double-digit wins this year and the next, I’m sure the offers WILL come. If they beat SMU decisively in the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl, the offers may come even sooner. Just sayin’.

  161. Stephen Tsai October 10, 2011 8:36 pm

I’ve been told that Brian Smith has a great understanding of the entire four-wide offense.

But I don’t expect Rolo to leave.

OK, change that. If Mack’s contract situation drags on, and SMU makes an offer, I could see Rolo going to Dallas.

Like I’ve been saying, if UH doesn’t like Mack, buy him out already.

If it likes Mack, then offer him an extension.

But it would really hurt the program if the delay scares away recruits (and coaches), and then he is offered an extension. I mean, what would be the point of the holdup?

  162. homey ℞ October 10, 2011 8:39 pm

Amen ST! Hope the knuckleheads on upper campus get their act together.

  165. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 8:53 pm

I suppose the coaches have to have an outside offer before upper campus will get off their keesters and write up a contract. Next time the UH Alum society calls for donations, we should all tell them to get their act together first.

  166. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 8:57 pm

If the Big 12 does move Westward, it would be interesting to see if they try to poach a team or two from the the Pac 12…

  169. al October 10, 2011 9:22 pm

they are public figures and therefore, their id’s need to surface.

any body with any common sense can go figure this out in or out, must decide now. come fall it will be too late and then the fall will start much before that comes around.

  172. al October 10, 2011 9:24 pm

Let’s figure out the time line – Hawaii Bowl is 12/24, Mack is let go 1/1/12. 10 business days to advertise, 2 more weeks to name someone, 1 week to sign an agreement – that puts it right before LOI day.

Are the coaches’ contracts on a fiscal year basis (i.e., Jul-Jun)?

  179. al October 10, 2011 9:42 pm

eventually, the sand “courts” will be constructed at the ching field. current plans are for the second year of the sports existence.

you know, our red tape is of the very thick variety so it takes a long time to go figure where they could procure enough sand. too bad we aren’t in the mojave desert.

  180. al October 10, 2011 9:43 pm

…and i hope they realize that need to figure out a way to keep the feral cats out of the pits.

  181. al October 10, 2011 9:47 pm

jm2375…many candidates are out there. if they don’t extend and cut ties now, they could commence a search immediately. they need to get off the dime if that is the direction they wish to pursue and hire someone before the season ends and sign him so he can go out and recruit.

typically, if this were the case, they would buyout the incumbent and let him go now and employ another in an interim position.

but, if they are gonna keep him then they better get off their duff right now. it is disrupting the program. one can see the visible affects it has on the coach.

  182. jm2375 October 10, 2011 9:47 pm

hmmmm… guess the Hawaii Five-0 UH vb episode is not next week’s episode.

  183. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 9:56 pm

i’m also curious if UH really wants Mack but its the price that matters or if they really want to move in a different direction.

  184. Kekoa October 10, 2011 9:59 pm

Drive on Col. A-House! We salute you.

  185. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 10:09 pm

    al,

who are some of the candidates you think that UH may be interested in and would be interested in Hawaii?

    Hypothetically speaking off course.

  186. papajoe2 October 10, 2011 10:12 pm

Seems like everything is pointing to an SMU-UH Sheraton Bowl game. I think the results will be similar to the last few years, not because we are not a good team, but because the timing of the game is not good at all for UH. Finals, moving out of dorms, whatnot.

  187. al October 10, 2011 10:13 pm

iwwthm…did you notice these writings on the wall?

one, currently in the fourth year of the original 5yr contract. typically now is the time to renew. extending two more years have been the typical norm giving the coach a total of three more after this one.

two, incumbent offers a twenty five percent voluntary pay reduction in exchange for two more years only.

three, committee wants to table the talks until after the season ends. surely, they are aware of the negative impact such a decision paints on the canvas.

four, no groundswelling by the public to extend the contract.

five, no outcry by the current roster of players.

there’s more hieroglyphics but, we’ll leave those for the subliminally inclined to read.

  188. al October 10, 2011 10:18 pm

iwwthm…would rather not hypothesize on potential candidates should there be a position. since, we still have a coach i’d rather not toss any names out there.

i am sure that a short list is kept in someone’s hip pocket just in case it rains. got to be prepared in case it pours.

  189. cavewarrior October 10, 2011 10:21 pm

This whole contract stuff at UH is a big head scratcher…. smells too…could it be some well known coach is being pursued over the next 3 months?

  190. cavewarrior October 10, 2011 10:22 pm

Upper campus can’t be that lame…right!

  191. Old Diver October 10, 2011 10:35 pm

In the academic world of university administrations their is no consequence for waiting. Gotta remember the people at a university administration are teachers. Many are great teachers. Rarely do you find a great administrator out of that bunch. They are just not used to making decisions not to mention making timely decisions. Will complaining help? Probably not. Not when they live by the saying, “Why do today when you always have tomorrow.”

  192. cheepono October 10, 2011 10:49 pm

i disagree that the university administration are teachers. i’ve had many professors and very few of them were teachers. most professors’ primary goals/responsibilities is research. having to teach classes is out of obligation, not passion.

  193. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 10:53 pm

    al

four, no groundswelling by the public to extend the contract.

Probably the biggest factor of them all.

Sad.. really sad… only after we lose Mack will the public realize how good he was to the program.

  194. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 10:59 pm

I figure .. if they decide to let Mack go, they may try to retain either Rolo or Aranda as HC. Don’t know if Shaw would take the position or move on. If they contract isn’t extended by the end of the year, I see Rolo and Aranda looking at opportunities elsewhere. They know that they will up their stock by having other options and/or getting more experience elsewhere.

If UH has to look elsewhere for a HC then how that coach does in his first year will really impact everything. If he does poorly, there will be a negative groundswell. If he does well, there will be no waves.. just a few ripples. If he does poorly in the second year, people will be asking for JD’s head as well as the UH President’s. If they try to bring Mack or JJ back, either will ask for a substantial raise.

  195. cavewarrior October 10, 2011 11:03 pm

In the football case, upper campus strings are being pulled by some other entity…BOR-related or downtown folks. Consider a broader perspective. Football needs more attendance; needs a new stadium; need recruits/athletes that can be competitive at the ‘next level’; needs big time donors; needs upgrade of lower campus facilities. What can UH offer to try to get these? (could try to entice Chinese-from-China interests since that’s where lots of $ are…). Just a thought……

  196. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 11:11 pm

    cavewarrior.

If they really wanted to pack the stadium, they could simply kill PPV. But they would lose a million or more even with a packed house and the bars and restaurants would lose business and a write-off at the same time. They wouldn’t like that and might become less generous as sponsors.

UH needs to win to improve revenues and get more attendance … they need to keep building the program without additional setbacks. I really feel that we are on the right track.. I look at the roster of player, red shirts and gray shirts and I’m excited about this season and the next and the next. I don’t remember feeling this good about the future talent of our teams as I do today.

  197. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 11:15 pm

On Oct 3, 2011, JD had this to say regarding Mack’s Contract

    wilderstreet wrote:

    Jim,

I know you can’t say much about Coach Mack’s contract negotiations and I know much of it is out of your hands. But from my perspective, putting it on hold until after the season can really hurt recruiting and the program. I hope we don’t end up in a similar situation that Bob Nash was put it (i.e. getting hired one week after the LOI date). We could lose a big part of the 2012 recruiting class if it drags out. I hope the “powers that be” understand how critical timing can be.

    ———————————————————-

    Jim’s Response”

    wilderstreet –

You’re right…I can’t say much… I will remind everyone that a couple years ago, the Board of Regents (BOR) changed Board policy and since that time any coach’s contract that was for longer than 3 years and/or more than $500,000/year require the approval of the Athletic Director, the Chancellor, the President, the Vice Chair of the BOR and the Chair of the BOR. Certainly, Coach McMackin falls in this category.

Everyone is aware of the recruiting ramifications, and frankly, other issues that can be affected in this situation. That said, I’m sure a decision will be made when everyone involved believes they have enough information to make a correct and long-term decision.

  198. cavewarrior October 10, 2011 11:24 pm

    MIH, thanks for 198.

    come on—-200?

  199. cavewarrior October 10, 2011 11:24 pm

    let it ride —–200!

  200. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 11:25 pm

Another thing that dictates attendance are the teams we play. We need brand name teams to come in the pre-season to get things off on the right foot and brand named teams to close the season.. the MWC won’t bring anything new and exciting to the stadium.

It’s good to see that JD is working with the MWC to try to get an extra week for Hawaii and for teams that come here to play. If it is approved, this could help bring better teams to Aloha.

    JD’s comment

I’ve discussed this issue with Mountain West Conference leadership, and they are in agreement that it’s logical for Hawaii to have an extra week in the football season to play the extra game allowed by the NCAA (and also for any team using the Hawaii exemption to have an extra week in that season).

The process for submitting NCAA rule changes/modifications starts in early summer and we’ll be working with Mountain West on putting forward some legislation probably sometime in the next six months.

We believe we’ll be able to garner the support from at least a couple of other conferences, and hopefully more, so that this legislation passes and if I understand the process correctly, it would become effective for the 2013 season. (There is a process for “emergency legislation” but the conference office did not feel this rule modification meets the definition of emergency legislation, so we’re going to go through the regular legislative process.)

  201. cocobean October 10, 2011 11:25 pm

In the old days the “powers that be” was Wally Fujiyama and his cronies. Wally was never shy about taking off his shirt and flexing his muscles when it came to UH. Now the “powers that be” are shadowy figures that hide behind the label of upper campus.

Poor JD. He seems to have input on contracts but is definitely out of the loop when it comes to decision making. What ever upper campus decides he’ll be their mouth piece.

To me it looks like upper campus is willing to get singed a bit by dragging out negotiations. They probably feel they got burned by Mack’s first contract and is negotiating with that in mind. They know whatever is finally settle upon there will be an outcry from a large segment of the general population about the amount.

They know program stability is a key in recruiting…but at what cost. I say 650K to 750K. But is Mack willing to accept something in that range.

  202. madeinhawaii October 10, 2011 11:30 pm

Maybe they’re playing hardball to have Mack back down even further by strangling his recruiting potential. If that is the case, that is utterly detestable as it means that they do not have what’s best for the football program in their collective minds at all.

  203. chawan_cut October 10, 2011 11:31 pm

    Good job Mr. A-House!

  204. cocobean October 10, 2011 11:46 pm

#203. I don’t believe it’s just upper campus playing hardball. Mack can sit tight playing the recruiting card with 1 1/2 years of pay guaranteed. I’d bet the people involved in the negotiations are probably some of the most passionate supporters of UH athletics.

  205. jm2375 October 10, 2011 11:53 pm

ST – one more volleyball question.

I spoke with the Warrior vb booster club president after the Wahine game on Saturday. He said that because of the *stupid* NCAA rule of no travel more than 400 miles, the Warriors can’t scrimmage another D1 team during fall camp and will instead be scrimmaging against alumni and possibly a club team. Is this truly because of the rule or because of finances?

  206. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 10, 2011 11:58 pm

    al,

Very interesting for sure. So many signs on the wall, so many silent messages, and still yet so much unknown.

the public doesn’t seem to care much because maybe we haven’t had the success that brings the attention. Rather the attention has been focused on losses. not totally fair, but it is what it is.

i am interested in what the BOOSTERS are thinking/doing at this time…

The most worrisome thing is that it *seems* as though this issue isn’t being perceived as an issue by anyone at all.

  207. madeinhawaii October 11, 2011 12:01 am

If the Big 12 is looking to expand West Ward.. then I hope UH is in contact with them, too.

  210. Ralph October 11, 2011 12:38 am

MIH a UH fan with passion, and avid Mac fan. Let’s look at some of his statements:

“UH needs to win to improve revenues and get more attendance” – we are 3-2, and to date only 2 teams on our schedule has a winning record. As stated in a re post by Garret, the WAC is 6-23 in non conference games this season, and our WAC Sagarin rating is abysmal. We need to win against better competition to increase attendance, and attract more advertising revenue and TV packages.

“Another thing that dictates attendance are the teams we play. We need brand name teams to come in the pre-season to get things off on the right foot and brand named teams to close the season.. ” ditto. So JD goes out of his way an schedule Lamar and South Alabama for next season, both teams are start up football programs.

And we can’t keep on getting our butts kicked on national TV- Norte Dame (Weis was fired after the season), Wisconsin, Colorado (Hawkins was fired last season in a year they beat us) and Tulsa scorched us in our house. Winning WAC games count in the win column, but it won’t impress anyone, definitely not those voting for conference re alignment. We’re invited to the MWC but teams are baling out-Utah, BYU, TCU, maybe Boise St. and a long shot, San Diego St.

  211. A-joe October 11, 2011 12:44 am

As I’ve said before, if Hawaii could show we have over a billion set of eye balls following us throughout the Pacific Rim, the SEC would trip over themselves to have us as their final edition to their conference. ESPN would set up shop in Manoa.

  212. slenzi October 11, 2011 1:07 am

    madeinhawaii:

Thanks for the great links for the SJSU game prep.

    Tsaikos:

Remember 1997? No not the Vhat Happen era. But Hong Kong reverting to China. Just the same thing going on with all the conference re-allignments. No one knows how it is going to be end. Whatever comes of the MWC will be better than the new WAC. The BCS or AQ conferences are all about the money and scrambling to position themselves for $$$ in the post-2013 TV contract era.

  213. A-joe October 11, 2011 1:21 am

The current goal is to win 7 games every year and make it to a bowl. With the current budget UH has, this is the economical strategy JD’s employed. It builds a consistant post season resume. That’s more attractive to present to recruits than say we’ve played and loss to Florida, Georgia and USC and could’ve won Washington.

Surely we could schedule better out of conference teams as fore mentioned. But, if we lose them it could be the cattalos to a perfect storm. Couple this with a stronger MWC conference schedule more losses could occur. Tack on UH’s infamous “fair weather fans” who can’t fathom a losing team. What we have is a $22 million program that’s losing revenue. We just don’t have the resources to cover for poor attendance and revenue short falls. JD and the program overall can’t risk it.

Until UH can beef up other sources of revenues to consistently cover bad years, UH will continue to employ the 7 game win theory. Which will include playing the Lamars and South Alabamas.

  214. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 1:23 am

    Ralph,

Have we used 2007 as a catapult to a better program?

Every Non-BCS team that has made it to a BCS bowl has remained relevant amid the national stage. TCU to the Big 12, Utah securing a PAC-12 bid, Boise is that thorn in the top 5 *again*. Have we? If so, does our W-L record back it up?

As Garret pointed out, our PPV $ alone makes us one of the richest in the poor and indigent WAC and probably MWC too.The current football staff has much better things to work with than JJ ever had. Increased recruiting budgets+HI Airlines donating travel vouchers, increased and better uniform deals, better facilities, better national recognition, higher pay for assistants, higher pay for Head Coach etc etc….No one can argue that what this staff has now is beyond what JJ had…

People have compared how similar JJ’s first 3 years are to Mack’s first 3 years. Is that fair to JJ and Mack though?

Is it fair to expect more from a program that now has a bigger and better foundation than it eve

Just for arguments sake…What if the higher ups see a program that did more with less 1999-2007, but now see a program doing the same with MORE. Weird ah?

What does that say? What is really fair here?

  215. maddog50 October 11, 2011 2:18 am

This is a simple game….spreads do not matter…contracts….articles on other teams…all is taken care of when the field is taken care of. Take care of the field on Friday and all will fall in place. Thank you Mr. Tsai. Warrior Heart—Warrior Mind—Warrior Blood—Warrior Will.

  216. Garret October 11, 2011 3:30 am

garret…isn’t it amazing how all these schools are so unabashed in prostituting themselves.

loyalty to the conference has now become a thing of the past.

    Al,

I totally agree with your point about the lack of loyalty to conferences. But when were schools ever loyal to their conferences? Let us consider UH as an example:

    1. UH left the WAC last year, the conference that had taken UH in when no other conference wanted UH. Articles in the Star-Advertiser revealed how UH (aided greatly by Freitas) worked for months behind the WAC’s back.

    2. Articles in the Advertiser last year included quotes from JD where he openly admitted to approaching the Pac-10 to see if they would add UH. So, we cannot put down SDSU for approaching the Big 12 when UH approached the Pac-10 last year!

    3. When the WAC wanted all of the schools to sign a loyalty pledge 6 years ago, *UH* refused and openly talked about wanting to go to the MWC. UH’s lack of loyalty resulted in SMU and others leaving the WAC and threatened to destroy the conference. Ferd and others did a great job of documenting this.

UH fans openly talk about how UH wants to join the Pac-12. JD openly talked about trying to get UH into the Pac-12. When UH was in the WAC, UH openly tried to get into the MWC even though that hurt the perception of the WAC and drove some schools out of the WAC.

Given all of that, I feel like a hypocrite if I let myself get bothered by SDSU, Air Force, Boise State, UNLV, and New Mexico trying to get out of the MWC for the Big 12 and/or Big East.

  220. Garret October 11, 2011 5:58 am

    Today’s NY Post:

In order to try to maintain its automatic BCS berth — the league’s No. 1 priority, said two sources — the Big East is poised to invite two programs that were barely on their radar at the start of the year — Boise State and Temple, The Post has learned.

The inclusion of Air Force, Navy, Boise State and Temple leave two slots remaining. Sources said Boise State would like a partner with roots in the West, opening the door for Houston and/or SMU. Central Florida, which has been blocked in the past from gaining an invitation by South Florida, would finally get its wish.
