• For his birthday, defensive back Steven Christian is undergoing hip surgery. He said plans for a pre-birthday celebration were derailed because he was required to fast for at least 12 hours. Christian is a pre-med major. He will earn his bachelor’s degree in May, and will decide whether to continue his football career (here or on the Mainland) or apply for medical school. • The Warriors hope to expand the rotation on defense. Art Laurel, despite a variety of […]

Thursday

A Utah State spokesman said the team has been studying Hawaii’s weather forecasts, and the Aggies are preparing for rainy conditions for Saturday’s game. It will be similar to the conditions of last year’s meeting in Logan. The difference, fortunately for UH fans, is Aloha Stadium has concourses and other dry areas to watch the game (such as their living rooms for pay-per-view telecasts). No such luck in Logan, where the fans are exposed to the elements. The Aggies arrive […]

Reality shows

Two questions to ask when a Kardashian proposes: • Why me? • Why now? The same skepticism should apply when a non-AQ football program, even one as successful as Boise State,  is asked to join a BCS conference. Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State saved the Mountain West Conference by transferring from the WAC. And now Boise State, Air Force and SMU are among six non-AQ football teams invited to help save the Big East’s AQ status. TCU and SMU […]

Rainy days and Tuesdays

By Stephen Tsai on November 1, 2011

It’s Tuesday, which meanr the Warriors went over videos of Utah State, this week’s opponent, and implement the game plan during a 75-minute practice. The third Aggies on the Warriors’ schedule offer another complicated offense with multiple shifts and motions. • Quarterback Bryant Moniz was allowed to leave early to  participate in a class project. It was a much-needed rest for Moniz, who has been hobbling from the hits he absorbed during the Idaho game. He should be OK for […]

WAC honors for Brown, Chun

By Stephen Tsai on October 31, 2011

Linebacker Aaron Brown and kicker Kenton Chun today were named the WAC’s players of the week for defense and special teams, respectively. In a 16-14 victory over Idaho, Brown made nine tackles, including a fourth-and-goal stop, and intercepted a pass near the goal line to set up the Warriors’ go-ahead drive. Despite playing with tendinitis in his left knee, Chun converted two field goals, including the winning 25-yarder with 32 seconds to play.

The people's team

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2011

When a football team proclaims it is playing for the people of Hawaii, it invites, well, the people of Hawaii, to voice their opinions, suggestions and critiques on which strategies and motivational tools they would prefer to use. And the voices become louder when an athletic department charges viewers for telecasts, and extra fees for the right to buy seats in specific sections. The decibel level is highest when an offense struggles against a statistically deficient defense, even after a […]

McMackin: "I know his name now"

By Stephen Tsai on October 29, 2011

MOSCOW, Idaho — A few days ago, head coach Greg McMackin inadvertently botched kicker Kenton Chun’s name on the coach’s radio show. After Chun kicked the winning 35-yard field goal today, McMackin said: “Kenton Chun. I know his name now.”

Field test

MOSCOW — Of all the reasons to conduct a walk-through practice, two compelling ones are found in the Gem State — Idaho’s Kibbie Dome and Boise State’s blue turf. Few other sites are comparable. Only 13 of the 64 Warriors on the travel roster played in the Kibbie Dome in 2009, the last meeting in Moscow between UH and Idaho. Unlike other domes, Kibbie is smaller (seating capacity of 16,000), with no seats behind the end zones. UH punter Alex […]
