A Utah State spokesman said the team has been studying Hawaii’s weather forecasts, and the Aggies are preparing for rainy conditions for Saturday’s game.

It will be similar to the conditions of last year’s meeting in Logan.

The difference, fortunately for UH fans, is Aloha Stadium has concourses and other dry areas to watch the game (such as their living rooms for pay-per-view telecasts). No such luck in Logan, where the fans are exposed to the elements.

The Aggies arrive this afternoon.

The Warriors had their final full practice this morning.

    Good Morning ST!

Full Pads? More like top half pads? Where are you btw? Don’t see you on the field. It’s kind of hot on the field isn’t it? lol

So far the boys are warmed up and going through scout teams.

Corey looks to still be a little banged up, but is moving well considering the knee brace he has on his right knee.

AB and Art looks very good with there movements, you couldn’t tell if they where hurt.

Moniz took one or two passes to find his rythem, but he looked good. Almost connected with Trevor Davis for. 70-75 yard streak pass down the sidelines against Mike Edwards. Trevor Davis is simply the go to guy. He will be a receiver to be reckoned with come game time. Even Scott Harding caught a nice pass from Moniz. Royce Pollard also caught a TD pass in the endzone but I think he may have been out of bounds.

Overall the team looks good, ready to take on the challenge against the Aggies.

Gottah get this win! Lock it down boys!

    Warriors 38 Aggies 24

  17. polywarrior4life November 3, 2011 7:43 am

Tyler Hadden booted a couple of kickoffs too the endzone. Looks like he’s healing up. Hip! Hip! Horray!….Proof!…….and the kick is good! Hawaii wins! Hawaii wins! lol

  25. Warrior Expat November 3, 2011 8:12 am

Novice question, so pardon my ignorance:

I’m trying to buy some tickets to the Fresno State game. I notice online that the sections between JJ through MM (and J through M) — 30 yard line to 30 yard line sideline — are always “unavailable for purchase.”

Does anyone know what I have to do to get seats in these sections? I know a lot of these seats are for season ticket holders, but I don’t think every single one of those seats is sold out/accounted for, are they?

  26. polywarrior4life November 3, 2011 8:16 am

I agree, let’s hope that we wouldn’t have to, “Poof” too win the game. Instead, “Boom!” the cannons a few times with a big lead in the game. lol

The Idaho State Board approved Boise State going to the Big East. There was only 1 no vote–someone who graduated from Idaho tried to vote it down, then tried to get a delay approved, but all the other Board members voted for the move.

Boise State going to the Big East was actually the last item on the agenda. The first item on the agenda was regarding Boise State adding a PhD program on Bimolecular Sciences. They spent a *lot* of money (8 figures) to build up their research in that area before asking for that PhD program to be approved.

By the way, Pres. Kustra did not even need to be at the Board meeting. I’m guessing he’s back East somewhere with the other Presidents of the Universities that will be at the official welcome to the Big East press conference.

HOPE ALL of You Predicting Hawai’i WINS By Blowout are Correct —

They NEED to Play HOT to take on the Cold & Wolfpack in the “Big Little City”

WHY Are so many teams running the “Pistol”?

    BOTH Kamehameha AND Punahou …

WHY? Don’t wanna take on St. Louis @ their own game ?

  73. Garret November 3, 2011 10:42 am

Pres. Kustra said on radio that *2* more teams in the West (west of Texas) are in play for the Big East. I know that San Diego State has been talking to the Big East, they have discussed that publicly. Maybe the Big East wants a western division that will combine MWC/CUSA teams…BSU, AF, SMU, Houston, BYU? SDSU?

Kustra also said that La Tech and NMSU would be going to CUSA!

If La Tech and NMSU go to CUSA and Utah State and SJSU go to the MWC, there would be no WAC football anymore. Only Idaho would be left behind.

Reports yesterday had Texas State and UTSA calling CUSA, Sun Belt, and MWC to try to find a home for their football teams.

  74. Garret November 3, 2011 10:43 am

By playing next season in the MWC, Boise State doesn’t have to pay an exit fee…and they won’t have to join the Big East until the Big East gets their new TV deal.

  75. Darren November 3, 2011 10:43 am

The $$$ make all the difference for Boise (hard to argue). At least Air Force seems to be thinking long and hard about the Big East…

    @GazetteAirForce Frank Schwab

Trust me – this is a very tough decision for AFA

  76. Garret November 3, 2011 10:44 am

At least UH will have 1 year with Boise State in the MWC with UH. I hope that the MWC makes that game in Hawaii instead of Boise.

    here’s my message: “GOT CONTRACT?”

  79. Garret November 3, 2011 10:49 am

Article from Utah regarding the UH-Utah State game.

As the season has progressed this year, the Aggies have struggled more and more to put points on the board and gain yards as an offense. Utah State scored 38, 63, and 34 points in their first three games of the season while gaining an average of 483 yards of total offense and achieving a 2-1 record. Minus the 63-point explosion against Wyoming on Oct. 8th, the Aggies have scored 24, 21, and 17 points while averaging 384 yards of total offense and compiling an 0-3 record during that stretch.

During the game against Louisiana Tech two weeks ago, a fan by the name of Garrett Wheeler posted on his Twitter account the following statement:

“Sitting behind the Utah State bench in interesting. These players have looked defeated all game. No excitement in them.”

  80. Garret November 3, 2011 10:50 am

Interesting to read that Utah State might actually have bigger special teams concerns than UH.

Finally, can the Aggies limit the mistakes on special teams? A few of USU’s losses can be pointed directly to blunders on the special teams unit. The kicking, punting, and return games will all have to play A+ football the rest of the way. That means no more illegal punts, no more fumbles, and no more onside kick follies. The Aggies have no choice but to be perfect in that department.

  81. Darren November 3, 2011 10:50 am

The schedule released this summer shows that we got Boise at home in 2012. Pretty sure that the MW will not change that now.

  82. Couch potato November 3, 2011 10:50 am

early man went to live in the himalayas and the pacific northwest. mutated to gargantuan proportions and became yeti and bigfoot.

  83. Garret November 3, 2011 10:53 am

So, if Air Force gets cold feet then San Diego State will get its wish and will become a football-only member of the Big East. That would be horrible for UH, as SDSU is one of the schools that are really attractive for UH to play and the travel distance is minimal for UH.

When SDSU’s President and AD go on every radio and TV station here and openly talk about how they are hoping for a football-only invite to the Big East…that sure doesn’t make the MWC seem secure for UH.

  84. Garret November 3, 2011 10:54 am

The schedule released this summer shows that we got Boise at home in 2012. Pretty sure that the MW will not change that now.

Tell that to TCU, where they had a home game against Boise State this season…until the MWC switched the game to Boise at the last second.

  85. Garret November 3, 2011 10:56 am

If the WAC is killed off as a football conference…then Boise State, Air Force, and maybe San Diego State will have an option for their non-football teams.

I would think that San Diego State would actually choose the Big West, better geographical fit.

  86. Darren November 3, 2011 10:57 am

That’s because TCU decided to ditch the Mountain West…

  87. mikey November 3, 2011 10:57 am

Welcome to a New Na Koa Member and board of directors: Mike Biscotti

I remember Mike well playing under Dave Holmes who in my book is the greatest coach ever to coach the “Green Machine” as it was call back then at the ole Honolulu Stadium in Moilili.

I still remember the 10-7 upset victory of University of Washington which I still think is the Greatest Upset of UH history in my era.

And to this day I still don’t know why and how he left us with no explanation?

That’s the same years that JJ was our bench QB and left us and Got Drafted as a QB to NFL

Welcome back Mike Biscotti… from Mikey

  88. WarriorMojo November 3, 2011 10:58 am

SDSU to the Big East!?! Who’s paying the travel subsidies for that one? Oh, ABC/ESPN, right.

  89. Couch potato November 3, 2011 11:00 am

if the big east does have a western division then SDSU travel will not be that much different than what it is now. big east share of revenue would surely cover a lot of things for SDSU.

  90. WarriorMojo November 3, 2011 11:01 am

I guess it really is about television markets, ’cause SDSU has pretty much sucked for years.

  91. Couch potato November 3, 2011 11:02 am

i mean travel cost would not be that much different.

  92. WarriorMojo November 3, 2011 11:06 am

Yeah, I know why SDSU accepts. But how about the Big East teams flying west? They’re doing what they have to do to protect their BCS status, fine. But let’s not hear anymore complaints about Hawaii being too far. West coast to Hawaii and West coast to East coast are comparable in both cost and travel time.

  93. Garret November 3, 2011 11:09 am

Let us forget about conference names–the Big East will have a western division, the Big 10 has 12 teams, the Big 12 has 10 teams, etc.

What the Big East is looking to do before their TV negotiations start is to create an Eastern division that has huge media markets and a Western division that spans the Central, Mountain, and possibly Pacific Time Zones. Then, when they negotiate with TV providers (NBC/Comcast and Fox) who need football inventory in all time zones, they are a one-stop shop for football inventory.

A western division of Houston/SMU, BYU/BSU, and AF/SDSU would be credible…and basically suck all the oxygen out of the MWC and CUSA TV deals in the future.

If the conference breaks up in the future due to the Big East getting poached by the ACC, Big 12, SEC, or Big 10, the western division have a core of 6 schools that are far superior to the cores of the MWC, CUSA, or WAC…so, they will be able to form their own conference and not have any of the bottom-feeders that drag down the conference’s money and power rating.

  94. Garret November 3, 2011 11:13 am

If there are 2 divisions, then a Big East team might fly west just *1* time per year. If that flight is to Dallas or Houston, that really is not much more than they travel right now.

By the way, if UH was at the 2006/2007 level of performance, I would bet that the Big East would have invited UH to be a football-only member. The Big East would not have been able to afford to miss a team recently coming off a BCS game. A division with BYU/BSU/SMU/Houston/AF/UH would have been a dream for UH. Plus, travel subsidies would be not an issue and UH would be able to keep PPV.

Boise State sure wants that western division and I’m guessing that goes to BYU first and SDSU if BYU says no. If Air Force declines, then they go down their list in the west (UNLV?).

  100. Garret November 3, 2011 11:20 am

Boise State wants *7* schools in the Western Division! I guess that means that Temple would be added to the Eastern Division of the Big East and the MWC would lose another team.

BSU President Bob Kustra told the state Board of Education today that a new western division of the Big East conference for football could include Southern Methodist University, the University of Houston, Boise State, and Air Force, plus two more he’s not “at liberty” to name, “but I will tell you I’m very pleased about the prospects of this western division, including not only the four I mentioned but two more that would be very solid citizens in a western division like this.”

Asked by the board if it would be a “deal breaker” if the Big East didn’t establish a western division, Kustra responded, “Yes, without a doubt, that is a deal breaker.” The idea would be for the western schools to play the western schools, he said.

Okay, so basically we’ll be left to cobble a conference together out of:

    New Mexico

    New Mexico State

    Colorado State

    San Jose State

    Utah State

    Fresno State

Coach Holmes was ‘eased’ out by the powers that were behind the scenes at the time.

A large part of it had to do with the team chemistry the last two years of his tenure as well as the gambling scandal in that last year.

  104. Don Weir November 3, 2011 11:45 am

When I was formally with Na Koa I asked two friends to help out with Na Koa business.

Scott Kaulukukui stepped up and took over the membership committee and is now the Na Koa Prez.

I asked Mike Biscotti ( a former teammate) to help out the ‘new’ Na Koa Board by joining the Board and he accepted. He is now a driving force behind Na Koa and he is fully committed to helping UH Football reach the next level.

  105. madeinhawaii November 3, 2011 11:55 am

So the Western Division of the Big East would include all new members, eh?

I know travel subsidies are supposed to be a huge deal. But I look at it as guarantees, and paying out $150,000 to $175,000 is relatively affordable given the amount of money UH generates in gate revenue.

polywarrior4life: I hope you don’t mind – I brought your post over from the football forum

  111. HawaiiMongoose November 3, 2011 12:20 pm

Garret, I suspect part of what’s going on behind the scenes is that both Louisville and Cincinnati are VERY averse to being in the western division of the new Big East. To keep them in the eastern division, and also add UCF and Navy, the conference will need to go to 14. It could end up looking like this (non-football members are asterisked):

    Air Force*

    Boise State*

    San Diego State*

I’m also concerned that when Kustra said that CUSA is considering adding Louisiana Tech and NMSU, he either misspoke or was misquoted and meant Louisiana Tech and NEW MEXICO. CUSA could also bring in North Texas (Sun Belt basketball champion) to create a western division that could have some appeal for the Lobos:

    New Mexico

    North Texas

    Louisiana Tech

The decimated MWC would be left with:

    Colorado State

    Fresno State

In that scenario we’d be welcoming back San Jose State, Utah State and New Mexico State, and possibly even Idaho.

    I feel a little sick…

  112. Old School Dave November 3, 2011 12:23 pm

Saw yesterday’s Cheap Eats on KFVE with Augie and Hagi. They showcased Gateway Cafe on the UH Manoa campus – in the dorms. All you can eat for anywhere from $8.50 – $10.00 (lunch, dinner). The food actually looked good with a variety of choices. Kids up there are eating well. Not like the old days when all of the food up there had a same bland taste and you’d find an occasional brillo pad in the tossed salad (true story).

  113. Old School Dave November 3, 2011 12:25 pm

Speaking of food at UH. I’m sure players from the 1974 team can remember the grilled cheese sandwiches they were served as a meal the week of their game with BYU.

    today’s musings…

if all those teams leave the wac causing it to no longer exist, will we no lonber be required to payout the exit fee or will it all go to idaho?

perhaps the university of hawaii should sell the naming rights to the big east since they want to venture further to the west, east-west center.

i first learned of the 2″ rule years ago, mike biscotti sat next to me in a couple of classes although listed at 5’11” to 6’0″ he stood no taller than i by no more than 1″.

i know he didn’t get too much publicity this past game, however, darryl mcbride had a great game hurry the qb last weekend.

being a numbers guy, i finally called oc16 about them offering a rebate to those of us who purchased the road package. as you know, half of the ppv games were/will be televised nationally. so i politely asked if they were going to give out any rebates.

after conferring with a supervisor, the clerk came back on and said that they will not issue rebates. she explained that inspite of having only three games in the package i still got a good deal because i paid but $100 when in fact the ala carte price for the ppv for the three televised games, uw, idaho, and la tech would have cost me $175. so i still got a good deal.

i tried to explain that i paid the $100 for six games however, i am receiving only three games. that was the deal.

i guess i’ll have to write to the president of the company.

  120. Garret November 3, 2011 12:47 pm

Due to their partnership, I do not think that CUSA will try to raid the MWC and vice versa. So, I think that Kustra meant to say NMSU, not NM for CUSA.

Given that the MWC and CUSA have a partnership, they both kind of have to look at the WAC for replacement teams…

  121. HawaiiMongoose November 3, 2011 12:52 pm

That looks like it could be the case except NMSU would be taken by CUSA and not in the MWC. NMSU and UTEP are perfect travel partners–you basically fly to El Paso and drive to Las Cruces to get to NMSU anyway.

If SDSU gets its wish and goes to the Big East for football (and Big West for basketball), then a space will open up for Idaho in the MWC. That is the only way that Idaho’s football program could stay in D-IA.

SDSU would simultaneously be in the Big East and Big West.

They have the COMPLETE support of the student body and Texas has deep pockets.

  156. Garret November 3, 2011 1:31 pm

I’m guessing the MWC will take almost anyone before Idaho. UTSA, Texas State, or even Montana.

That would be the case if the MWC had a *choice*. Montana isn’t going to move up for the teams that are left in the MWC with that limited MWC TV contract.

Texas State and UTSA are trying to get into CUSA and are a better geographical fit there. If CUSA wants to go back to 12 schools, at least 1 might make it.

UH paying travel subsidies to Idaho is a worst-case scenario that I wasn’t even considering during this realignment process.

Hi, Don Weir! Hello to the Missus, too.

  159. Garret November 3, 2011 1:35 pm

UH could use the threat of going to the WAC or going indy to try to get the MWC to not require travel subsidies to any school that joins the MWC *after* UH joined. Then UH wouldn’t be paying travel subsidies to Utah State, SJSU, and whoever else the MWC adds.

UH agreed to pay travel subsidies to Boise State, Air Force, and the rest of the schools that were in the MWC when UH joined. UH didn’t agree to or plan on paying subsidies to other schools. The MWC could make a condition of its offers to Utah State, SJSU, etc., that they won’t get any travel subsidy from UH…after all, USU, SJSU, and the rest have no leverage now.

We’ll see if the MWC is actually going to look out for UH. I won’t post what I think will happen.

I don’t like Fresno State because their worst fans have had their kids wear —K Hawaii shirts on without the first word being censored or modified.

They have incited fights at Aloha Stadium only to have one write a letter full of LIES and have it spread out in national media circuits making UH fans look like the SOLE guilty party.

Thrown red hot pennies on the backs of opposing team players for basketball.

Their softball fans at Bulldog Stadium called our own Wahine “c—-“.

Their women’s basketball team has a bunch of u— a– t—- o– c—- that probably just served time and their head coach instigates a bunch of their questionable on-court behavior.

People don’t like BSU because they are arrogant… UH OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BSU fans I’ve met in person have been aloof at the worst and gracious in defeat and victory at best.

To me it seems more like sour grapes when people think BSU are the evil of the WAC/MWC or whatever. I hate Fresno for some damn good concrete reasons.

  174. Kevin November 3, 2011 2:05 pm

  176. Bowwar November 3, 2011 2:10 pm

It would be nice to know what JD and our folks on upper campus are doing in respect to the conference realignments. It seems we’re always sooooooo “reactive” versus “proactive” in these type of situations and end-up with what amounts to as: table scraps. We should be actively lobbying, networking, negotiating, and positioning what is BEST for the University. For “joe-fan” we see nothing of that, just a smug UH administration sitting back and watching the world pass them by.

Heck, they can’t even renew coaching contracts, etc. ———-Fire them all!!!

  177. haka November 3, 2011 2:13 pm

    i am sure…maybe…but…definitely…hearsay…from a reliable source…i believe…

  178. Bowwar November 3, 2011 2:14 pm

Agree with Kevin about Fresno…They are just outright “trailer trash” and poor sports in whatever they do. BSU is outright arrogant and they will get their “day” when the house of cards falls and they become the doormats for whatever conference.

  179. madeinhawaii November 3, 2011 2:18 pm

UH should at least request that their travel subsidies be cut in half. Or that all travel costs be lumped together and divided equally. No school pays more or less.

  180. madeinhawaii November 3, 2011 2:18 pm

If our Warriors had BSU’s record in football, many of our fans would be pretty arrogant, too.

    Especially the fair weather ones.

  182. Couch potato November 3, 2011 2:25 pm

haka and Kevin, knowing that falyn did not get a release from usc i guess that means she can’t sign on the early signing date next week and will need to wait for next years signing date. shoji should have an available schollie. DAMN, she is some serious height and talent. too bad she didn’t come here as a freshmen and play alongside kanani.

  183. Garret November 3, 2011 2:25 pm

UH’s Sagarin computer rankings (final rankings used in 2010/2009/2008):

    2011: 93

    2010: 53

    2009: 87

    2008: 79

This doesn’t give JD much leverage with the Big East, especially when the Big East is trying to keep up their football computer rating.

SMU, Houston, BSU, and Air Force are the western teams invited to the Big East and they are all above UH’s computer ranking this season. BYU may also have an invitation and they are well above UH in the rankings. UH is ahead of Central Florida this season, but UCF won the CUSA last year and beat a team from the SEC in a bowl game last year.

San Diego State is above UH in the computer rankings this season and were ahead of UH in the final Sagarin computer rankings last season also. They are also a shorter distance away in a bigger TV market…and they have already publicly applied for the Big East.

If AF and BYU turn down the Big East, SDSU will get an invitation and accept. If there is another spot that opens up, I think that UH would be just as strong as any other candidate since last season was so strong…

In the end, I think that Boise State is in the position of power and can basically choose who the Big East will invite. Boise State recruits a lot in Southern California, so SDSU works for them.

I am going to stop posting about realignment for the rest of today, but I’ll end with this: if enough teams turn down the Big East so that there is a spot open after SDSU takes one, then I don’t see a better candidate in the West than Hawaii.

There is *nothing* proactive that JD can do right now. Other schools are in the position of power due to TV markets, success on the field, and geography. Things won’t be over for UH even if UH doesn’t make this cut…remember what happened last year when Fresno/Nevada left. If UH wins, UH will have options.

  184. kev-1 November 3, 2011 2:28 pm

It would be pretty ridiculous for the western most state to end up in the big east.

  186. Wes'side Warrior November 3, 2011 2:32 pm

Don’t forget that ESPN is heavily involved in these discussions too. Obviously, Hawaii has something to offer if ESPN has UH games on ESPN3 almost every week. If demand was so poor, UH wouldn’t even be considered for online broadcasts. So, despite outward appearances of ESPN towards the WAC, they seem to understand that UH has some value to them.

    November 3rd, 2011 at 2:10 pm

It would be nice to know what JD and our folks on upper campus are doing in respect to the conference realignments. It seems we’re always sooooooo “reactive” versus “proactive” in these type of situations and end-up with what amounts to as: table scraps. We should be actively lobbying, networking, negotiating, and positioning what is BEST for the University. For “joe-fan” we see nothing of that, just a smug UH administration sitting back and watching the world pass them by.

Heck, they can’t even renew coaching contracts, etc. ———-Fire them all!!!

I think 95% of the people that were on edge about UH between the months of August 2010 and December 2010 might have ASSUMED that UH wasn’t doing much about our situation with the WAC then.

There was pretty much silence coming from upper and lower campus.

I ran into JD one on one during a women’s volleyball game and when I joked if he was getting much sleep, it seemed like he was about to say something, but then paused and just said, “we’ll be ok”.

Then the WAC announced Texas State and UT San Antonio as additions and JD appeared on the Bobby Curran Show almost hyping those programs and up-and-commers and to us that seemed like UH was waving the white flag of surrender and will STAY in the WAC…. UGH.

Then in speaking with a UH coach and asking his opinion on the new WAC for his sport, he then said, “well, I don’t think we’re staying in the WAC anyway”… NOW, this was direct from a UH employee obviously.

So from my perspective it went from silence from UH, then a hint of staying the WAC with more silence, then this small hint we won’t stay, to BAM!!! We’re moving into the BWC and MWC.

While I ASSUMED that the silence indicated no progress, I was wrong indeed.

That’s all I have to say about UH not saying anything.

  188. Garret November 3, 2011 2:34 pm

    One last article.

SJSU athletic director Tom Bowen has submitted documentation to the Mountain West “outlining our position,” he said.

“We’re very committed to the integrity of the process,” Bowen added. “We have not jeopardized our support of the Western Athletic Conference.”

But if the Mountain West were to invite the Spartans “we’d have to do what’s best for San Jose State.”

  194. WarriorMojo November 3, 2011 2:53 pm

As always, thanks for your insight. Truly appreciated. One thing JD could do NOW, however, if he hasn’t already, is get on the phone with the Big East commissioner. It’s going to be a tough sell so might as well get the dialogue started.

He’s going to have to call in ESPN support for this, but if you are correct that the Big East is going to market itself itself as a one stop shop for televised games all day, then they need to be reminded that Hawaii is the only school that can offer that last game of the day. We know ESPN likes and wants us to stay relevant for the Hawaii Bowl and Diamond Head Classic so there’s a chance.

#126: Garret: If SDSU gets its wish and goes to the Big East for football (and Big West for basketball), then a space will open up for Idaho in the MWC. That is the only way that Idaho’s football program could stay in D-IA.

SDSU would simultaneously be in the Big East and Big West.

If that happens Idaho who would be the only one left in WAC will get an invite and pay them the travel supsidy too?

I was referring to the South Park episode where one of the kids parents bought a hybrid car and started telling people that they should buy one and if not they are morons. They’d do so my closing their eyes and thumbing their noses at everyone else.

South Park then made the joke that they then moved to San Francisco to join “like-minded people” who also thumbed their noses at others for not “thinking progressively”. They depicted San Francisco full of wine and cheese stores and people walking around with turtlenecks and driving hybrids and talking smack about people that don’t.

The biggest punch line of the episode is when the family hosted a party with their neighbors and they all eventually started farting into wine glasses and taking a BIG whiff. This joke here explains and illustrates that the level of smugness in San Francisco is to a degree that they can even stand the smell of their own farts.

I don’t watch this show as much as I used to, but their eccentric views on the way WE conduct ourselves as a society tends to be not that far off from their purposeful and blatant exaggerations.

I mean when you think about it, don’t we agree that arrogant people essentially don’t think their own —- stinks?

I think we (and alot of others) really know that Shane has every right to be furious over how he was treated…having to stand there and watch Mo struggle when he was off but not getting the call to get a chance to lead the team to victory. And then the slap in the face when he didn’t even get garbage time to keep him sharp if Mo gets hurt and he has to take over for the rest of the season. But Shane took the high road and showed some serious integrity for a young man. Hopefully the older man can learn something from Mr. Austin.

  238. Not an Expert November 3, 2011 10:26 pm

It’s not about conference realignment. It’s about the networks and how they will make the most money and who they would want to showcase and be able to control.

In addition ESPN is telling the MWC network partner, you can’t compete and cannot do anything about it cause you don’t have the money and clout we have. Advantage BE cause of their connections to ESPN upper brass.

If ESPN wants Hawaii in the BE they would be in the BE. Is there a way to convince ESPN that Hawaii has a lot to offer? If not too bad too sad.

If what Garret states and BSU, Air Force & SDSU leave for the BE than it will be best for the MWC & WAC to close shop and petition C-USA and hope that ESPN will be sold on a plan to create something for these schools left out of the ballroom.

UH’s Sagarin computer rankings (final rankings used in 2010/2009/2008):

    2011: 93

    2010: 53

    2009: 87

    2008: 79

Garret, curious as to why you use the Sagarin ELO_CHESS rating instead of the overall Sagarin rating.

The overall Sagarin rating would read as follows:

    2011: 80

    2010: 47

    2009: 105

    2008: 91

Is the ELO_CHESS rating the one used by the BCS?

The MWC may be getting raided even worse than currently thought…it sounds like NMSU might be an invitation to the MWC. Maybe SDSU leaving gives a spot to NMSU?

NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston said no discussions have taken place, although their is chatter of NMSU getting an invitation to the Mountain West Conference, if, in fact, Boise State and Air Force leave the league to join the Big East in football.

“There’s conversation that the Mountain West may consider an invitation to San Jose State, Utah State and us,” Boston said. “Don’t know how it will play out.”

  252. NYUH November 4, 2011 3:57 am

Yes, Congress needs to reform the NCAA so the BCS doesn’t walk all over it.

  253. Garret November 4, 2011 4:02 am

Post #252 should say that NMSU might “get” an invitation, not “be” an invitation. My younger daughter had just gotten up and was watching me type and I was rushing.

If the MWC loses 2 schools (AF/BSU) and adds 3 schools (USU/SJSU/NMSU), that doesn’t make sense to me because that would put them at 11 football teams. That is why I think that NMSU getting an invitation could only happen if SDSU or some other school leaves.

  254. Pomai November 4, 2011 4:05 am

If NMSU, SJS and US are in the MWC might as well buy the rights to change their name to the WAC.

“It is simply not the same conference we first agreed to join,” Kustra said of the MWC. “The losses dealt a blow to competition and potential for getting an automatic qualifier” for the BCS.

  257. Garret November 4, 2011 4:11 am

With La Tech looking solid for an invitation to CUSA, only Idaho is left to collect the exit fees…they have a small market, tiny stadium, and are the last place team in the WAC at the worst possible time. Poor Vandals.

  258. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 4:50 am

I’d like to know what the TV guys involved on both sides (MWC and WAC) think of the possible new landscape. If teams gravitate to the MWC, what is the bottom line for CBS Sports and Comcast? If teams move back to the WAC, how would ESPN address the contract? Keep in mind, we still have other sports to consider, aside from football.

It may come down to which network will give a bigger payout per team.

But then again, Fresno and Reno may not want to return to the WAC, and bring UNLV and whomever else with them. Network money will do the talking.

It may seem like it’s too late, but Upper Campus better be pushing hard on research grants, from now until forever. It’s one thing for them to be whining about the Athletic Department. It’s another that they can’t even take care of their own departments and strive for academic excellence. Every single academic department should be performance based, just like what we expect from our student athletes.

  261. Garret November 4, 2011 4:56 am

I don’t think I remember JJ ever getting a QB commit this highly ranked before…and he committed over the summer, before this Big East stuff happened. It would be nice for UH to get a QB recruit like this someday.

Eddie Printz is a 6-4, 200-pound Pro-Style Quarterback from Marietta, GA. He is ranked No. 90 in the country by 247Sports.

Printz is the No. 3 recruit in Georgia (GA) and is the No. 7 Pro-Style Quarterback in the nation.

    Printz has a 247Sports rating of 92, making him a 4-star prospect.

  262. Garret November 4, 2011 4:58 am

    Wes’side Warrior,

WassupDoc posted the news about how UH’s research grant money was tens of millions less this year than last year…that is the wrong direction! While other schools are getting millions more this year than last year, UH is going backwards.

You have to spend money to make money with research. Schools pay a lot of money to attract the top researchers, spend a lot of money to equip them with labs and everything else they need, then give them $1+ mil endowments to pay for grad students, post docs, etc.

  263. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 5:00 am

Yes, Garret, that’s what I’m saying. They constantly whine and complain about the athletic side of the equation, but don’t even notice that huge 2×4 stuck in their own eyeballs!

  264. Garret November 4, 2011 5:01 am

    Wes’side Warrior,

Good point about the how the TV providers are a key factor in everything. CBS/Comcast refused to let BYU show replays of games on BYUTV…BYU could have stayed in the MWC if they could have had BYUTV replay rights, but the MWC’s TV providers refused.

So, BYU left their $1.4 mil MWC TV share to get $10 mil in TV money from ESPN, with full replay rights. The MWC lost big when BYU left but the MWC’s TV providers did not seem to care.

  265. Garret November 4, 2011 5:04 am

    Wes’side Warrior,

You are not wrong with your point in #263. The thing is, Upper Campus *is* paying close attention to the research side, and they pay way more attention to that than UHAD. They just cannot or will not do anything about that.

With the budget cuts that UH is getting, I honestly do not think that there is anything UHAD can do in the short-term to fix their research grant decrease. It takes years to build up a research group, even when you have $10 mil to throw around…when you don’t have the $10 mil then…

  266. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 5:05 am

Like others have said over and over… seems like we just don’t have a plan to achieve whatever vision we supposedly aspire to reach.

It’s fine to say you’re gonna learn to surf one of these days… but it’s never gonna happen if you don’t get off of the sofa and get into the water. We don’t even have a plan to leave the house and walk down the road yet.

  267. Garret November 4, 2011 5:07 am

Regarding QBs, JJ also got the #1 recruit overall (not just QBs) in Arkansas to commit to SMU. So, the top recruit in Arkansas is their QB in the 2012 class, and the top QB recruit in Georgia is their QB in the 2013 class. Wow…

  268. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 5:09 am

And here we go with the catch-22 stuff. We see many mainland schools getting creative with fees and bonds and whatnot, all to move forward. All we see back home is, “Well, we can’t because we don’t have money, and no one knows how to raise money, so we just gotta keep cutting the budget until finally one day it will all balance out. Then, hopefully, the world will still be revolving around the sun, and the PAC24 may still want us.”

  269. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 5:14 am

I remember a dozen years ago, or so, how people would ask 5* and 4* recruit questions, and the general answer was (and I’m paraphrasing) “well, it’s too far away from their homes on the mainland, so their families wouldn’t get to see them play, so it’s nearly impossible to go after those types of recruits. We gotta go after those that are under the radar. The 4*+ recruits want to stay near home and play for big name schools.”

Even when Coach Jones and his staff were here, and even after that miraculous turnaround season, we still didn’t get those types of recruits looking at us seriously.

Probably won’t happen unless/until we finally get into a BCS conference.

  270. Garret November 4, 2011 5:16 am

    Wes’side Warrior,

The California public Universities raised fees (UC schools don’t have tuition, so the fees really are tuition plus fees) aggressively after budget cuts last year and will raise them again. That let them keep expanding their research programs while not cutting classes and other things that affected the students.

UH should have raised tuition a LONG time ago, they have been talking about it for years and not doing it earlier will cost them for years. It took UH years just to get the student athletic fee passed, they should have raised everything back then.

  271. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 5:24 am

So, do we need to streamline our course offerings and concentrate more on those programs that are unique to Hawaii, the Pacific, Asia, tourism, etc.? Maybe we’re trying to do way too much and we’re spread too thin on resources. Take another look at the overall, and revamp the whole thing.

Of course, we’d first need to form a committee to research if such a plan might be feasible (there goes a couple million on that committee). Then, another committee needs to be formed to read the report and make recommendations to yet another committee… etc., etc., etc.

  272. Garret November 4, 2011 5:27 am

Adrian Klemm got 4-star recruits from California in SMU’s past 2 recruiting classes, recruits with multiple Pac-10 offers. That was with SMU being in a non-AQ conference. Adrian Klemm was finishing up a degree at UH and sitting around in Hawaii when JJ asked him to come to SMU to work for free for a year before he could be hired…UH could have hired Klemm if they had wanted to, he was living in Hawaii, attending classes at UH, and his only offer was an unpaid job in Dallas.

When JJ was at UH, the recruiting budget was $50k. Now, the recruiting budget is $120k and UH also has a full-time recruiting coordinator that alone costs way more than UH’s entire recruiting budget under JJ, and that is in addition to the $120k.

JJ offered to reduce his salary at UH (to $500k) to increase the recruiting budget and fund a position that would assist the football program (basically, the position that JD funded that hired Tony Tuioti). UH turned that down.

People criticize JJ’s recruiting in his last year at UH, but the fact was that his contract was expiring! JJ’s contract was over after the season and every recruit knew that…on other forums I see the same people that criticize JJ’s recruiting when his contract had just about expired at UH also blame Upper Campus for killing Mack’s recruiting even though he has 1.5 years left on his contract.

Blaming JJ for leaving the cupboard bare means that we are saying that recruiting should be no problem with an expired contract. Blaming Mack’s trouble with recruiting before this season began means that recruiting is impossible if a coach has just 2 years left on his contract. How is that consistent when the same people excuse Mack but blame JJ when JJ’s contract had much less time left than Mack’s contract has now?

I’m depressing myself so I’ll go and work for the rest of the day…I’ve been on hold for a work call for awhile now but I think I’ll hang up and call another company that may want a 7-figure electronic equipment contract and won’t keep me on hold.

  273. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 5:38 am

I’m not blaming Coach Jones for anything. All I’m saying is that it’s tougher to get those highly regarded recruits to Hawaii, no matter what. It might’ve made things easier for us had the NCAA gone with cutting football scholarships as they had considered previously.

I’m sure Coach Mack had his share of top recruits while he was with UofMiami, when Miami was running their hot streak.

It’s just plain tougher to get top recruits to come to Hawaii when considering all things they must weigh in their decision making.

#2 got on the team bus an hour ago and they have 7 more hours of bussing to go before getting to Spokane.

Good wet morning Tsaikos! Hope everyone stays dry today.

Re: research dollars – I’ve heard some say that some funding institutions (e.g. NIH) are very nepotistic (is that a word?). A researcher is far more likely to get the big grants if they’ve done a fellowship there or worked under someone who works there. It takes years for a researcher to work up to those big multimillion $ grants and to even get the first small grant (think 5 or low 6 figures) is difficult.

  278. jm2375 November 4, 2011 6:17 am

    d1 – #277 – at least on a bus, you’re not packed in like a sardine!

  280. d1shima November 4, 2011 6:41 am

Even at D3 level, a bus full of football players is always packed!

  281. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 6:44 am

JMxxxx, I wouldn’t doubt that nepotism has a part to play in all of this. I mean, that’s how things have been for ages. That’s how families and relatives consistently get the inside scoops on job openings, etc. And I didn’t mean to put all Professors into the same group. Especially since we do read of the good that some departments are doing with regards to research. But, they are few and far between when it comes to pushing the envelope at UH. We constantly hear/read of other (even smaller, D-II and D-III) schools who are making breakthroughs in various other fields.

Surely, we can focus on what natural resources are readily available throughout our islands, and concentrate studies in these fields. Or, are we satisfied with the work done by prior researchers, and would rather just stick teaching what’s already known, instead of digging deeper?

We’ve got so much unused former plantation fields. We should see large scale research going on to try to come up with crops and methods to lead us to self-sustenance, for example. I go back home, and all I see are acres and acres of weeds! What good is that doing the state?

  282. Wes'side Warrior November 4, 2011 6:46 am

    But, yeah…

Game Day eve! Another huge game for our boyz!

Let’s go, Warriors!!! The battle is on!

  283. expat November 4, 2011 6:52 am

Listened to the Kamehameha – Punahou game last night online. Wow, you can’t ask for much more from a football game. Congrats to both teams as it sounded like everyone left everything out on the field.

We have an almost insatiable drive in this country to “cut taxes.” Decreased spending is killing UH and has been for several years. It is also having a profound effect on many — or maybe all — public universities around the country, not to mention the public school system. Even in “rich” school districts like mine (the only district in Oregon to have every school rated outstanding every year) we had to close one elementary school this year and will shutter two more next year to close a huge budget deficit because of reduced state funding.

Most recently it is, as Garret has pointed out repeatedly, one of the driving forces behind conference realignment. TV money. Corporations gaming the system to extract as much profit as possible. Many of these corporations don’t pay any, or very little, federal income tax as has been widely reported in the past few days.

The money has to come from somewhere. UH in particular cannot compete with schools on the mainland when it comes to faculty recruiting and retention. Hawaii has a high cost of living. Without the faculty, researchers, equipment and facilities UH cannot compete on an equal footing for the grants. As Garret mentioned, tuition has to go up. It hurts the students, yes. But it hurts the State more to have UH spiral downward.

There is plenty that upper campus can do without breaking the bank as well. The biggest push should be to focus on making UH the kind of place where you are in and out in four years. You know what hurts most about a higher tuition bill? Paying it for 6 years instead of 4. UH should be striving for at least 50% four year graduation rate among undergrads with a goal of getting it up to 70% over the next 10 years. That alone would make a huge difference.

A lot of that is just fixing bureaucracy and streamlining requirements and credit transfer rules.

  284. HawaiiMongoose November 4, 2011 7:15 am

Garret, re #254, there are rumors on the CUSA message board that UMass, Temple and FIU are candidates for CUSA invitations. And we’ve already heard that CUSA is considering LaTech. That would be four additions when only three schools are leaving. Perhaps the plan is to move UTEP from CUSA to the MWC, since CUSA is expanding eastward, and rebuild both conferences to 12. If so the MWC would look like this:

    San Jose State

    Fresno State

    San Diego State

    Utah State

    Colorado State

    New Mexico

    New Mexico State

The MWC could also pick up Seattle in the west and Denver in the east as non-football members. That would leave Texas State and UTSA to go to the Sun Belt and poor Idaho to drop down to FCS in the Big Sky, finishing off the WAC.

  285. HawaiiMongoose November 4, 2011 7:18 am

One benefit of the above arrangement is that, if the Big East were also to take SDSU, USU could be moved to the west and the east could be backfilled with North Texas or UTSA.

  286. Dennis Halloran November 4, 2011 7:53 am

UH is the southernmost University, not the Westernmost, right? So Big East would like to expand South?

  287. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2011 8:11 am

Gotta give the coaches a break on recruiting.

Seeing that only 4 coaches at UH actually recruit, they are doing a good job.

Imagine if all our coaches recruited like they do at every other program in the nation. We would probably get even better boys to come to UH.
