Fonua gets the (re)call

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2012

Freshman Benny Fonua, who had previously decided to redshirt this season, has agreed to return to the active roster and compete for playing time at middle linebacker this week. It will not be determined until after Thursday’s practice what role Fonua will serve for Saturday’s road game against San Diego State. But coach Norm Chow said the decision was reached by mutual agreement. Another freshman linebacker, Jerrol Garcia-Williams, will be rotating with the first-team defense this week. * * * […]

Travel call

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2012

It’s interesting the San Francisco 49ers decided to practice in Youngstown, Ohio, this past week between their road games at Minnesota and New Jersey. The Warriors employed the stay-on-the-road strategy in each of the previous four seasons. The Warriors were 1-3 in the second game of those two-game series. The Warriors, in the middle of back-to-back road games, decided to return to Hawaii between games. It makes fiscal sense because this Saturday’s game is at San Diego, a one-flight trip […]

The hangover

By Stephen Tsai on September 29, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY — It will be back to the proverbial drawing board when the Warriors resume practicing on Monday. It should be interesting to see who will be available for practice. X-rays were negative on the necks of defensive tackles Geordon Hanohano and Siasau Matagiese, but that doesn’t mean they wont miss some time. It appears Matagiese has a better prognosis. Additional tests will be done on d-lineman Marcus Malepeai’s knee, which is apparently sprained. Malepeai, a defensive end, […]

Game day: BYU

By Stephen Tsai on September 28, 2012

Provo — A past generation’s rivalry continues when UH and BYU play in today’s nationally televised game. The Cougars’ offense has received some heat after struggling (by their standards) in the past two games against rivals Utah and Boise State. BYU offensive coordinator Brandon Doman told Provo reporters this week: “I’m the leader, the master of the design, and I think you’re perfectly designed to get the results you get. The results we are getting are not what we want […]

Provo

It’s too bad about receiver Justin Clapp’s latest setback. He suffered a torn meniscus during Tuesday’s practice. He will undergo surgery next week, and is expected to miss several games. David Graves and Chinedu Amadi take Clapp’s place in the receiver rotation. * * * * * Sorry for the late post, but “Ferd” and I are in the hotel lobby awaiting our rooms. Apparently the phrase, “we were completely sold out last night,”  is the new “the check is […]

Pu‘u-Robinson cleared to play

By Stephen Tsai on September 26, 2012

For once, the Warriors received good news: The NCAA cleared defensive lineman Jordan Pu‘u- Robinson to play this season. He was notified during this morning’s practice. Pu‘u-Robinson, a transfer from Washington State, was added to the travel roster for Friday’s game against BYU.

Stutzmann returns

By Stephen Tsai on September 25, 2012

Sorry for the late post. Traffic was bad because we had to drive around all the people thrown under the bus at yesterday’s hearing. * * * * * “Chipped up” is the designation for a player who has more than an ache but less than a serious injury. Yesterday, there were several chipped up players — Scott Harding, Justin Clapp, Mike Sellers, to name a few — but they should be ready to go for the BYU game. The […]

Schroeder, Edwards named co-captains

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2012

After consulting with some members of the team’s leadership council, head coach Norm Chow named quarterback Sean Schroeder and cornerback/returner Mike Edwards as co-captains. They joined previously selected co-captains Miah Ostrowski and Paipai Falemalu. The announcement was made after yesterday’s practice at the Ching athletic complex. * * * * * Punter Alex Dunnachie and quarterback Cayman Shutter are now off suspension and cleared to play in games. Chow said Shutter will be competing for the top backup’s job. As […]
