Fonua gets the (re)call

Freshman Benny Fonua, who had previously decided to redshirt this season, has agreed to return to the active roster and compete for playing time at middle linebacker this week.

It will not be determined until after Thursday’s practice what role Fonua will serve for Saturday’s road game against San Diego State.

But coach Norm Chow said the decision was reached by mutual agreement.

Another freshman linebacker, Jerrol Garcia-Williams, will be rotating with the first-team defense this week.

After a two-day break, the Warriors resume practicing today ahead of Saturday’s road game against San Diego State. Of note:

• This will mark the Warriors’ first MWC road game.

• According to SDSU spokesman Mike May, Qualcomm Stadium ‘s field is actually below sea level.

• May said there will be an annual fireworks show after the game. (The coaches might have to use hand signals for the post-game meeting.)

• The Warriors will go with a commando-raid approach. They will have a walk-through on Friday morning, depart in the afternoon and arrive in San Diego that night.

On the legality of those plays that caused the two neck injuries, can’t blame it on home-town officiating. Not sure how the contract was written, but it was UH that paid for the officials for the UH-BYU game. A UH official delivered the checks to the referees before the game.

hope the coaches rest Matagiese this week, esp since we’ll have a bye next week too.

were they able to find any concrete in Anae’s helmet?

by any chance, did any of the coaches go to Arizona this weekend? or were they all in Cali?

There appear to be cardinals trying to nest under the eaves near my kitchen. I yell, they scatter. For some reason chasing away cardinals makes me think of Riley Wallace.

  10. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 7:08 am

yeah, I saw Anae thrust his helmet against the opposing Warrior’s helmet.

hubby and I were surprised he wasn’t ejected after he did that to a 2nd Warrior, especially since both incidents resulted in both warriors collapsing and being carted off the field.

  11. Stephen Tsai October 1, 2012 7:08 am

Correa was pretty tough. Played 66 snaps.

There is a reason why USC and BYU passed up on Chow being the HC; this reason is very similar to the reason why Duke passed up on Shroeder being starting QB. I’ll leave it to you all to figure out for yourselves.

What is clear to me from watching the beating UH took from BYU is there is no clear team cohesion. Maybe Chow appointing his favorites as co-team captains screwed up the team chemistry. Anyone who has ever played the game knows you can’t mess with team chemistry, especially on issues such as letting the players pick their team captains.

I hope Chow continues to leave Shroeder in place. This will speed up the process of Chow’s exodus and finding a real HC for the UH.

Genius, Chow is not. “In Chow we chust”, as DPK likes to say, I think not.

Beating Lamar is something probably even the current squad Kahuku could have done.

  23. RedZone October 1, 2012 7:44 am

  24. letsgowarriors October 1, 2012 7:44 am

im not a fan of the wildcat, tho.

    26. Fickle fans are everywhere. Every team has them in the country. No point getting worked up over other people. Especially when it is ecpected to always have fans who complain. No one is happy with how this season is going but I think if anything, its the optimistic fans who are the ones that are having way too high expectations. People were trying to predict Chow was going to be a savior immediately. Predicting USC upsets and so on.

If people can put into perspective that we had some pretty bad recruiting classes under Mack and learning a new system will take a couple years as a whole, then I think we will be fine moving forward. Need to get the right recruits in place.

  29. HawaiiMongoose October 1, 2012 7:56 am

Injuries are the wild card in college football, especially when it comes to offensive and defensive linemen. There are only so many scholarship players on the roster and you need a core group of healthy big bodies on both sides of the line to win. Unfortunately UH has been snakebitten in that regard. The already daunting challenges associated with installing new offensive and defensive schemes have been amplified by the loss of many key linemen and the result is that the Warriors are now a bottom ten team.

Does that mean we should give up on them? I won’t. Injuries heal. Inexperienced players gain experience. It will be a long road back, but as long as the team stays together and stays focused and the fans continue to give support, this will eventually turn around.

  30. wowlaulau October 1, 2012 7:56 am

#26, just ignore them. It is an opinion, can’t change what people think … even if it’s ignorant…..

  31. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 7:58 am

I am glad I watched Norm Chow’s show last night. So funny. ST was given the assignment of describing each player’s best and worst room mate on the road.

ST said he used to room with Ferd Lewis, who really had a weird snore keeping ST up all night. So, because of that, they now sleep in separate rooms.

ST’s only other room mate has been his wife. Gee, he hasn’t been around very much!

  32. chawan_cut October 1, 2012 8:01 am

ha! mynah problems! that made all my mayjah problems go away!!

  33. Warrior Pride October 1, 2012 8:01 am

Give Graves a shot at starting QB. Schroeder is okay, however, we need a change for the sake of the rest of the season. It’s quite obvious, Taylor Graham, is the next UH QB. Schroeder takes to long to get rid of the ball (long throwing motion).

  34. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 8:01 am

Also on his show last night, Chow said that Pete Carroll would also tell him to simplify, simplify, simplify.

So maybe that is what Chow is trying to do here.

  35. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 8:04 am

    CC: you too?

  36. helencalif October 1, 2012 8:05 am

A collective effort can make a difference. Let’s try it in our respective free time this week, yes? Saturate those Warriors with your positive thoughts :).

    First posted late last night:

On Wednesday, October 3, the Hawaii County Council will hear Resolution No. 303-12, which urges the Hawaii State Legislature to abolish the Public Land Development Corporation (PLDC).

Just to remind all of you: ACT 282 -2012 establishes the Stadium Special Fund to be administered jointly by the Stadium Authority and the PLDC by (re)developing segments of the 115 acres of parking lots surrounding the Stadium through establishing public-private partnerships. The $$$$ raised over the next 30 years (an estimated $250 million) would be used for a wide range of capital improvements, upgrades & expansions of the facility without having to get the money from the taxpayers.

NOTE: All of the (re)development revenues will go into – and stay – in the Stadium Special Fund.

If the PLDC is rescinded/abolished, the supporters of the Stadium Special Fund will have to look for another way to continue its existence. It took several of us well over two years of doing the necessary research and educating & informing elected officials and high-level administrators about the importance Aloha Stadium plays in UH’s future in intercollegiate athletics.

For those of you who live in Hawai`i County – or elsewhere – feel that it’s important to let the Councilmembers know that you support UH’s participation in NCAA Division 1-A athletics – especially football which provides support for the other 19 intercollegiate sports – please contact Lloyd Haraguchi, Executive Director, Public Land Development Corporation. His e-mail address is Lloyd dot M dot Haraguchi at hawaii dot gov to get further information as to how to let the Councilmembers know your position.

There is a deadline for submitting testimony – 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

    Mahalo for taking action.

  48. LizKauai October 1, 2012 8:35 am

If Anae’s hits are considered clean… then the rules need to be changed.

Again, giving a person an intentional whiplash should be treated like an intentional concussion…

The effects on the victim are traumatic and with longterm effects.

Re: The fireworks display after the game.

I’m hoping the Warriors provide the offensive ‘fireworks’ during the game. Afterall, you and the HPD bomb squad know how much I love to see things go BOOM!

  50. LizKauai October 1, 2012 8:36 am

I understand that there are hazards in any contact sport… but to be effective in today’s game, INTENTIONAL injuring has become the norm and I don’t like it.

  51. LizKauai October 1, 2012 8:41 am

Worse for the human being who is the victim of violence is the human being that commits it. I don’t wish either on anyone’s child.

So who am I a football fan?

    Good question.

I am supporting the kids that want to play…

It’s all about the kids, their parents, and friends we have made along the way.

  52. d1shima October 1, 2012 8:47 am

Football is not a contact sport…it’s a collision sport. Every play involves collisions akin to a car accident.

    Very unfortunate results often happen.

First play was freakish as helmets collided as both players were coming out of their initial step.

Second play either he drops his head or takes a helmet in his cage.

What would the conversation be if Kamika Anae wore white and green on Friday and laid out 2 Cougars?

I’ll repeat what I’ve said several times…If the rule makers really want to impact the rates of concussion injuries they would ban facemasks.

  53. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 8:48 am

48, what game were you watching? They both collided head on with each other. It’s not like Matagiese was blind sided.

  54. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 8:52 am

Talk about maturity accusing another player of INTENTIONALLY trying to knock one of our players out of the game.

  55. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 9:02 am

jeezy: hubby and I SAW Anae move his head forward while the warrior kept his head still. Anae was the perpetrator TWICE.

  56. Old School Dave October 1, 2012 9:04 am

Auburn fans want to fire their head coach. This after winning the national championship in 2010.

  57. koakane October 1, 2012 9:08 am

morning 😎 sun good for my photovoltaic system but humidity is beginning to be something else.

howzit going warriors and wahine country. not so 😳 good weekend for UH athletics except the vball 😉 ladies. no matter just keep fighting.

looking like the warrior fball team will have a 🙁 long uphill season. a few respected birdies have it right on. they are a young team with limited D1 experience and only playing time will get them that. add to that is new coaches, new system and well you have seen the results. personally ihmo 😕 need to hit the weight room and build up mucho strength, which was evident against BYU and Nevada. Dem oddah boys was huge.

at this point in time peeps we now know what we have in our fball team. no use getting huhu 😐 over it, gotta go with the flow now and revel in the progress (no matta how small) the team makes.

  58. Whats up October 1, 2012 9:09 am

With the Warriors Defense can’t stop anything, Mike Edwards is the only one that is playing at a high level. So I dont think the Warriors will win any games against MWC teams, as a quasi-Reardon statement, “With these Horses”. Chow has to develop these Horses and recruit Horses to better fit to his style of offense. And Kaumeyer needs to do the same thing with the Horses on his defense and recruit Horses to run his style of defense. Lets be serious though Hawaii has run the RnS for 13 years and Hawaii is at the beginning of a change of style of play.

Changing from what you have been doing to something completely is always painful, here are some examples:

Think about when you have to change jobs whether you get fired or not?

Or your job changes it policy from documenting with paper forms to electronic documention and you don’t type well?

Or some other major change and it took you and the rest of the staff a while to adjust and it effected job performance?

Change as in when you get a divorce/break up and have to enter the dating scene again?

Change as when you instructor changes the criteria for the worse and you have to start all over again midway through the semester?

Change is not always for the better but this early none of us really knows whether Chow and his staff’s change is for the worst either. Give it 3/4 years and then we can make a true evaluation.

  59. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 9:12 am

So football players don’t ever move their head forward in football??? Matagiese wasn’t a defenseless player. RBs put their head down every single time to initiate contact with defenders. If you don’t know football, stop trying to become a expert.

Now if one of our WRs got hit in the helmet going for a ball, I could see a reason for complaint. Not when our O linemen are initiating contact against each other. Happens on almost every single run play.

Every time we get a new coach someone always complains that the previous coach left the cupboard bare.

  62. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 9:15 am

    61. Mack left the cupboards pretty bare if you ask me. He set our program back a few years.

Mack on the other hand inherited a team that came off a BCS game. You know what that does for recruiting? He didn’t take advantage of it at all. Not to mention, we returned 9 starters I think on defense. Why Tyler Graunke didn’t play I dont know. He showed that he could lead a team to wins.

  63. Pauoa Boy October 1, 2012 9:19 am

Anae did what any football player would do when blocking, lower the boom. He did absolutely nothing wrong to Hanohano. If you watch the tape, the ball got hiked, they engaged, and Hanohano looked like he just collapsed. There was no intentional head-banging going on. The hit on Matagiese also was not intentional either to hurt him. If you watch Matagiese was chasing the QB, he was stumbling until the last second when Anae engaged him. Matagiese tried to throw his body into Anae but was too late, so Anae like any player would, lowered the boom. Unfortunately, Anae being taller collided helmets with the shorter Matagiese. Did it look bad, yes, was it as bad as it looked, no.

Are they saying that in Boulder?

  66. tom-warriornation October 1, 2012 9:22 am

We should have an option offensive package

Even June Jones had this offensive scheme in goal line situations; but why don’t we have one to put in the game using Graves as QB; as a surprise to opposing defenses–just keep running it until they stop us; then throw the long pass when they bring more people in the box. Use this on our opening series; and several times during the game. The 49’ers have this option in their game plans with Kapernick!

Or even putting in Nevada’s pistol, again with Graves as QB–we ran the pistol last year.

How about more screen passes; flea flickers; reverses or trick plays?

We need to do something different to shake this offense up!

  67. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 9:23 am

Does very little when the head coach leaves for another school and takes most of his staff with him including his top QB recruit. It does worse when you have a lack of soap issue drawing greater negative attention to the school. It embarrasses when your team seemingly folds like it did in the in the BCS game and everyone is chanting .. “over rated.. over rated…” I think people expected too much positives in recruiting from the Sugar Bowl, especially after all that ensued.

  68. Old School Dave October 1, 2012 9:24 am

In light of some of the comparisons fans have made regarding Norm Chow to Fred Von Appen, here some thing to consider:

Von Appen had no clear plan or vision (although his Super Bowl Rings were nice). He did bring in some talent (Dan Robinson, Jeff Ulbrich, Dwight Carter, among others). VA pissed off those in the community who tried to help the football program – seemed disinterested in meeting influential people and garnering support. VA changed offensive coordinators each year he was here (Guy Benjamin, Wally English, and finally making DC Don Lindsey the OC in 98). VA turned his back and didn’t recruit local players (the Iwalani School incident and Joe Igber comes to mind), opening the flood gates for other WAC and Pac-10 schools to recruit here. Local players who telling recruits to go elsewhere. VA didn’t seem to want to be here, nor did many of his assistants (who were from the continent). There was dissension on the team, culminating with a brawl between local and mainland players on campus.

There’s more, but I’ll stop here.

  69. d1shima October 1, 2012 9:26 am

    mih,

Believe it…the recruiting, or lack thereof was a big problem.

Koakane is right, the physical difference especially in this past game was striking. I mentioned it during the game.

I’m not sure that Hawaii is getting outworked in the weight room but it may just be a matter of the starting point at which the S&C Coach is given.

  70. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 1, 2012 9:28 am

Justin Clapp has a future in comedy if the football thing doesn’t work out.

    That guy is pretty funny.

  71. Old School Dave October 1, 2012 9:34 am

d1shima #69: Good point. Given the competitive nature and getting the edge, it’s coming down to details with regard to preparing your team. You need to keep up with the times in terms of S & C methods and now nutrition as they are very important now. Many schools have a year-round training table and dining facility. They also have a full-time sports nutritionist that monitors players caloric and protein intake. Strength and conditioning methods are constantly changing – S & C coaches seem to be going back to the old Olympic/explosive lifts nowadays (snatches, pulls, cleans, clean and jerks). The list goes on.

  72. obachan October 1, 2012 9:39 am

@34 If I heard coach or maybe the defensive coach correctly before – by simplify it meant allowing the defensive players to play by reacting instinctively instead of thinking too much. Now that it appears that the players are reacting instinctively but finding themselves out of position to make plays, simplify must now mean something else. Is it the opposite now – think first, before reacting??

  73. letsgowarriors October 1, 2012 9:40 am

    BiK

  76. Pauoa Boy October 1, 2012 9:43 am

All it takes is the boys having pride and heart in everything they do. From the classroom, to the weight room, to the field. Go harder than your hardest effort, always continue to push yourself more than what you’re capable of. Don’t settle and think you’re good enough, because there is always someone better than you. You gotta continue to do work everyday, every chance, every opportunity. The problem is the whole team has to give their all for themselves and for each other. If they don’t you will never receive the results you’re looking for. Like I said, I don’t expect miracles, could care less about the wins and losses…but I do want to see heart and effort on every down, every play, from every player. Seems like some are on this route but most are not. Saying it on paper and actually doing what you say are two different things. You can say you’re doing this and that and working hard this and that, but if you look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself did you do everything you could today to the best of your ability, I’m pretty sure the answer would be no. The boys should know this because if they all gave full effort during the games, they wouldn’t be making excuses, or wouldn’t have to say I shoulda, woulda, coulda done this or that. Them looking down and getting pissed off at themselves for the outcome of games is their own fault. We all know the team is more than capable of what we’ve seen so far, seems like they just need a swift kick in the ass!

  77. Bigislandkurt October 1, 2012 9:48 am

There is a spectrum of UH fans. On one side you have the Kool aid “we will beat USC” guys. ON the opposite end, you have the guys suggesting that we start looking for a new coach already. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle….depending on the week or the previous weekend’s game results. Here is what I know, there is no sense in telling someone what kind of fan they should be. Everyone has the right to be the kind of fan they choose to be. No sense in wasting precious energy trying to change someone’s mind. If you still believe in Chow time, right on. If you are super critical and calling for a coaching change, then cool too. That’s all part of being a fan. And everybody reserves their right to be just that….a fan.

    BIK

  78. Pauoa Boy October 1, 2012 9:53 am

Just to clarify, I know there will never be the perfect day for any person, but if all the boys collectively strive for that perfection not only for themselves but for the team, I garrans the results will be fruitful.

no disrespect to the injured players family but I have to believe no player goes out with the intention of hurting another player. football is a violent collision sport and if you played it you know. players try their best to be the better one. and as we know when local bruddah play against each other no matter what level testosterones enlarges 150% and the adrenaline flow rampid. so those of you blogging “eye or eye” should back off from that stance. yes we bleed green and hurt when those representing gets banged up but that is no way to be.

I must also believe Anae is remorseful geordon and siasau got stingers. I wish them fast recovery and will be there to cheer their return to action.

  82. Wes'side Warrior October 1, 2012 10:07 am

Anae remorseful? Didn’t you guys see him telling the story and smirking and laughing about it on the sideline as the medical staff tended to our boyz?

  83. Shoko October 1, 2012 10:07 am

Be interesting to see what the attendence will be like next home game. I was thinking about 30k or just under. Now, I’m thinking low-twenties.

Anyway, I’m giving coach the duration of his contract to make things happen. Still confident about the future of the program.

  84. Wes'side Warrior October 1, 2012 10:09 am

Look at the rest of the linemen. No one blatantly headbutts anyone else, aside from Anae.

  85. letsgowarriors October 1, 2012 10:15 am

both of our players led w their head as well. look, it sucks they suffered such bad injuries. it was definitely scary. but Anae didnt do anything wrong. maybe his smirking while they were still down was dirty, but between the whistles, he did nothing wrong.

  88. Kevin October 1, 2012 10:19 am

I pondered weeks ago that the push for homecoming week should have begun the Monday after the Nevada game.

Homecoming is still sacred in the college world and where people complain we have no traditions or enough pride in our school, it would be imperative to plug plug plug away and the promotion and advertisement of such an event.

In a perfect world, the football program would be 4-0 and need for such promotion wouldn’t be so urgent. However the climate is such that a proactive approach is really all that one can do to try to get people to the game against New Mexico regardless of what happened in Provo and what will happen (good or bad) in San Diego.

    Proaction… PRO-ACTION.

  89. Wes'side Warrior October 1, 2012 10:19 am

Our guys are on defense… rushing in. Our guys did not headbutt BYU. Watch the video and you’ll see. No one else in the video does a headbutt when making contact, but Anae. I played that thing over and over and watched every single matchup.

    Whatevas.

  90. Wes'side Warrior October 1, 2012 10:19 am

They are not headbutting. Guess you guys want to make points, but not read the whole statement? Pau.

One does not lose on homecoming.

  92. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 10:23 am

kind of ironic if hes a dirty player that only Hawaii linemen got carted off the field.

  93. jonj October 1, 2012 10:23 am

Jeezy when ur head coach from your BCS season leaves and you get ur head coach a couple weeks before signing day begins and dont even have a full staff, how you think the BCS seasons gonna have positive effects??? common man! like i said before your the very one who was on mack nuts on his recruits! We all know he recruited jus as good if not better than June. I believe we have good players… maybe not so much depth but good players!! we jus got wrong scheme on both offense n defense! nobody in their right mind can say schroeder is better than graves. What kills me most is Chow throws graves back in with 5min left just for him to hand the ball off! Or when shutter gets in there and hands the ball off! why not let them attempt a pass n see if they got game!

  94. jonj October 1, 2012 10:25 am

    schoeder not graves

  95. jonj October 1, 2012 10:26 am

Ill give schoeder some kudos that he got some balls n can take a hit. but no Zip on his arm no mobility

  96. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 10:29 am

    93. I was never on Macks nuts. I praised his solid recruits, and scratched my head on the borderline ones.

Yes I was a Promise Amadi, Trevor Davis, and Chris Gant fan but I never ever liked his O line recruits, QB recruits, or majority of his skill guys.

Any having 2 weeks left is just an excuse. If Mack was involved in recruiting as much as he claims, he should have been able to stick to the players he was recruiting throughout the season. Mack was on the same coaching staff. Only player I know who left Hawaii for SMU in that class was Chris Banjo.

Not to mention, we were still good enough to make a bowl game and in that sense, should have been signing solid players the next season too. The year Jones recruits became seniors was our WAC championship. After that, we just went down hill. One would think a solid recruiting class would have formed but it didnt.

  97. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 10:30 am

People mistake good recruits from good recruiting class. Good recruiting class means 20 good players in my opinion.

ww I saw the sideline scan after geordon and it was #64 with the huge smile and talking with Anae who may or may not have cracked a smile.

btw I am not related to any of the Anae’s.

all I am reiterating is I gotta believe football is a clean sport where no malintent is involved or else this sport is off my list. while playing and coaching our pre game prayer was for team victory and no injuries on either side.

I know how we get emotionally involved and applaud you compassion but a reminder each player has a family. what talk is being spread around will be taken in a wrong ways.

again prayers to geordon and siasau for quick healing and their families for peace of mind

    #66. I agree with you.

  110. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 11:08 am

I keep forgetting that last season we only had two offensive starter who eventually ended up being knocked out of the game, leaving us with no starters from the year before. Still we at least scored in every game and were very competitive in half of our losses. Our O-line starters got injured early in the season. Our defensive starters kept getting injured in the early part of the season as well… So we had a whole bunch of players new to their positions last season as well. It’s a different playbook, I understand, but we should not be losing by the scores that we have been.

  111. Rite80 October 1, 2012 11:10 am

Mack got the head coaching job with no QB. The coaches knew Tyler Graunke has academic problems and was unlikely to play. This is not the time to knock Mack. He is no longer the head coach.

  112. guest October 1, 2012 11:15 am

It’s a GAME! Every once in awhile need to put things in perspective. Young men same age as those on our football team are really in harm’s way getting killed and blown up in places like Afghanistan.

Go Warriors! (Both here and overseas)

  113. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 11:20 am

    111. Thats football. Qbs always need to be replaced. But not recruiting a successful one that fits the system over his time here is pretty bad. And I am putting blame on Mack as regards to the talent we have on our current team. I know it is going to take Norm 2 years to get the program where he wants.

Lets remember we were a Run and Shoot offense under Mack. What QBs does he recruit? A bunch of scramblers. Graves, Alo, Woolsey. Who were Macks best QBs in his time here? 2 walk ons. Moniz and JAntz. Mack never gave Jantz a shot and is not the QB for Iowa St.

  114. RedZone October 1, 2012 11:26 am

No need worry about whether Anae’s hit was legal or not. If he is doing something wrong the word will get out and he will get his in the end.

  115. NinjaWarriorTurtle October 1, 2012 11:26 am

To know whether the head-butting was accidental or intentional is to wait to see if it happens again. Just very fortunate neither Warrior suffered any permanent debilitating injury. However, for two players playing the same position to suffer the same neck injury inflicted by the same player within minutes of each incident is suspect.

  116. toronto mat service October 1, 2012 11:35 am

Tremendous things here. I am very satisfied to look your post. Thanks a lot and I’m looking forward to contact you. Will you please drop me a mail?

  117. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 11:38 am

If Anae is head butting, I’m sure the next team they play are well aware now. That means whomever he’s lined up against will be ready for him. Anae could end up on the injured side, next. He should be careful.

  118. helencalif October 1, 2012 11:43 am

#113. Graves is more than a scrambler. Go check his high school stats. He was an accurate passer. I believe 70%.

  119. 99club October 1, 2012 11:53 am

I like the travel plan for the SD St. game…probably saves some cash, too.

Just got my ticket to the Colorado St. game in the mail today. Can’t wait!

  120. moonsurfer October 1, 2012 11:55 am

About the “Anae” situation: First of all , he’s 6 ft 6 inches tall and over 300lb , strong with quick feet . When you collide w/ someone of that statue , the taller person will have the tendency to have a downward thrust on his target (helmet) leaving the back of neck vulnerable to injury . If both players were the same height , the possibility of getting injured would be minimal … Anae’s block was clean .

  121. helencalif October 1, 2012 11:59 am

David Graves’ stats as a QB his last year in high school:

Avg passing yds. per game: 251.9

    Completion per cent: 71.7%

    Passing TD’s 40

Is he a scrambler, too? Yes. Rushing yds per game: 63.3

    Pts per game: 6.2

Reno recruited him and he gave a verbal. Then UH (Mac and Rolo) came a-courting. He rescinded his verbal to Reno and decided to go play for Hawaii. He has put in 3 1/2 yrs. at Hawaii working hard to be #1 in the Run and Shoot offense for which he was trained.

You know the rest of the story…

  122. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 12:03 pm

    121. High school stats are over rated when it comes to QB. His brother put up better numbers.

Graves is a run first QB who is better quited for Reno offense.

  123. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 12:03 pm

  124. wait a minute October 1, 2012 12:10 pm

jeezy, you realize that you’re discussing this with Grandma?

  125. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 12:14 pm

I figure there is a connection but I am not knocking Graves. Simply stating he is a run first QB. He is suited to play option or spread offense. Could even see him playing WR and DB.

But anyone who understands football knows run and shoot probably isn’t the best offense suited for his skill set.

  126. Horse Trainer October 1, 2012 12:17 pm

All the thoroughbreds in the world will not make a difference is you don’t know what to do with them, Mr. Reardon.

  127. redwarrior October 1, 2012 12:22 pm

    Jeezy33

You right. The RnS is basically the Patriots third and long offense except they will sometimes put in one or more athletic TEs in place of slots and Tom Brady is no scrambler.

  128. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 12:31 pm

I wonder if someone could go an interview the previous coaches separately and ask them their opinions on recruiting for Hawaii? What kind of players to expect. How would that affect the kind of offense/defense you would employ. In hindsight, if you could do it over again, what might you change? Or would the gag order between the coaches and UH forbid that?

  129. helencalif October 1, 2012 12:37 pm

I agree that Graves is better suited for R&S and the spread offense, which is why he was recruited for Hawaii 3 1/2 years ago.

I disagree that he is a run only QB. While he is athletic, agile, and capable of running the ball when necessary — and while he can execute a successful QB sneak — his average passing per game was 251.9 yds. with a 71.7% completion rate, and he had 40 TD’s passing.

I don’t think those stats say he is a run only QB. It says he can do both — he can pass and he can run when necessary.

Yes, his younger brother had better stats. The Air Force wanted him.

  130. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 12:39 pm

If we need to groom our freshman recruits for 1 or more years before they can start, then we are looking at a long rebuild before Coach Chow has his kind of players with the depth that he needs. Unless he recruits primarily from the JC ranks this season, it will take at least three years. Even then, a couple of injuries in key positions and things might fall apart.

I understand we don’t have all that many scholies to give away this year, too. Whooo boy! Got to hope our existing players turn the corner and start filling the shoes for their positions.

  131. PolyMom October 1, 2012 12:41 pm

Haters already? Give me a break!

How can anyone here compare Hawaii to USC and other big schools? Let’s see Hawaii program 3M. USC football program 300M.

Takes money to have a good team. No fans in the stands. Show up and support YOUR team.

Chow is an excellent Coach. Reading some of these posts is really shameful. The team needs support. Like I said fans in the stands. Not home watching on TV. Support YOUR team!

Have a great week. Go WARRIORS!

  135. Warrior1978 October 1, 2012 1:18 pm

    @125 Jeezy33

Agree. The best offense for Graves skills is a Nevada offense or a RichRod zone read scheme. Higgins skill set is actually better suited for the RnS or pro-style which is likely why Higgins did so well compared to Graves in spring ball.

  136. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 1:18 pm

    133.

What do you expect? Go check out other teams with losing records. Unhappy fans are a given. You sound surprised like it’s the 1st time fans are wanting to get rid of a coach.

I think the fans that are the most irritating are the ones who say this is a rebuilding year and go out and predict a Hawaii win every single week. Then when Hawaii loses, they start hating on the fans who have anything negative to say. Throw out the rebuilding card. Be on 1 side or the other.

I understand we are in rebuild mode so I am willing to swallow the losses to see progress. Recruiting is going to be huge. It would be nice to pick up a few wins in the coming weeks. Unlike BYU and Nevada, I think SDSU is winnable. This coming week is probably the most important game of the year because if we win, that would be huge momentum going into New MExico game. And New Mexico almost beat Boise.

  138. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 1:20 pm

    134. That’s what I want to hear. Obvious our LBs weren’t performing at a high enough level. Fonua can play. Maybe even convince coaches to offer Kawe Johnson

  139. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 1:23 pm

    135. I think HelenCali is taking my context the wrong way. I didn’t say Graves can’t throw the ball. I pretty much just feel he is a spread type QB. Which I think many of us would agree. The run and shoot is suited for QB like Colt Brennan who can make quick decisions and is very accurate with the ball.

High school level defenses are very different than college level. Lot of quick 1st read throws and throws off the run where WRs are wide open. When you can scramble in high school, it buys you a lot of time for WRs to be uncovered.

  140. Stephen Tsai October 1, 2012 1:23 pm

And Garcia-Williams will get work with first team this week, too.

  141. letsgowarriors October 1, 2012 1:24 pm

is Fonua gonna compete at middle? bc IMO, middle has been a weak link for us. our guys, while they have nice length and are athletic, are playing w very bad pad level and getting driven back. TJ seems better suited for OLB. Alo too, but i think he’s still adjusting to playin in the box.

  142. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 1:28 pm

If we wanna be good in the future, great idea to start JGW and Fonua early on. Both have much more upside than our current LBs. Team them up with Laurel and lets see what can happen.

  143. letsgowarriors October 1, 2012 1:28 pm

acutally, LB has been a weak link overall, not just the middle. i expect my man #41 to start playing better too.

  144. Hank October 1, 2012 1:30 pm

It’s good to hear that Benny and Jerrol will compete to help our D. If we have a chance at winning this week, we’re going to have to find a way to stop[ the run.

  145. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 1, 2012 1:33 pm

Reading the blog here and forums elsewhere, people are blaming everything from Coach Chow, to the short hair requirement, to not having names on jerseys, and the coach not wearing a lei.

Personally, I think its the All Access show’s ugly back drop that is causing our poor play and losses.

  146. Hank October 1, 2012 1:34 pm

  158. Manoa October 1, 2012 2:13 pm

Graves and Schutter appear to be reborn with Schutter at number 2.

Either one of these guys could be our QB if Chow were not looking for someone to run his system more than the ability of the QB. Schroeder was the guy best suited to run Chow’s offense. The problem with Schroeder is he limits what Chow can do now to very basic things from Chow’s system. Schroeder is not a good rollout option to pass or run guy so that part of Chow’s offense is tossed (and Chow has a package of plays for running QB’s– like say Steve Young, BYU’s best running QB).

Chow also cannot run adjusting routes with Schroeder who has no experience with them and also no experience with our receivers on adjusting routes. Schutter, now the 2, and Graves can throw to adjusting routes– which Chow said he would do when he first came, but Graves inability to pick up Chow’s system prevented that and of course Schutter’s suspension also spoiled it. We badly need to use those skills of our receivers– Stutz, Davis, Gant, Harding, Bright and Miah– adjusting routes would get these guys open. We need four receivers and we can use the tight end for a receiver or sub the FB for a receiver instead of bringing so many guys inside to block the inside run that it draws the defense in and stops our running game.

  159. letsgowarriors October 1, 2012 2:18 pm

    who’s schutter?

  160. jonj October 1, 2012 2:19 pm

jeezy u forget Alexander! guy had size and a cannon n for some weird reason could scramble! all Ik is if we keep the current trend up n getting blown out how we gonna attract big time talent?? N your stupid theory of hawaii recruiting 20 good players is a joke! 5-10 a year wit solid back up at best. we are NOT USC or any major program! YET i pray

  161. tommui October 1, 2012 2:30 pm

I don’t recall Moniz was supose to be a scrambling QB – but the Colorado game proved that he could.

We believe David Graves can scramble – he has done so in the past and he has proven that he can pass.

Cayman Schutter showed that he could run during his high school years and certainly can pass.

Can David and Cayman do well with the Pro Set? Don’t know unless you try them.

  162. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 2:32 pm

20 a joke? are you kidding me? Thats what it takes to run a successful program. 5-10 a year would leave your team super thin depth wise and turn over rate of good players leaving not good at all.

I am not judging quality players by stars. I am talking about how coaches do their homework and find players that fit their system.

Ex. Salas, Bess, Grice Mullins, Pilares were not blue chip highly recruited players. But Jones did his homework and knew these players would pan out to be good. 20 might be asking too much but if you can hit 15-20 quality players per class, you have a chance to be a very good football team. The way our team functions now, one guy gets hurt, we are screwed. And injuries happen no matter what.

  163. jimmy the lock October 1, 2012 2:32 pm

Schutter? The lawyer? Get it right fans.

  164. Moocher October 1, 2012 2:34 pm

Yeah I’ll say it again. When you factor everything in it’s obvious to me we are losing because coach not wearing a lei and that’s causing bad mana.

in other words eh, so much unnecessary roughness n personal fouls going on on coach n the players n even players that don’t play us-and I’m guilty too, that I stepped back and saw the real problem is coach not wearing a lei….anyone who took my lei comment serious for the record … relax it was a lighthearted poke at all us armchair quarterbacks 🙂

I hopped off the bus cause get problem, checked the oil, kicked the tires and got back on the bus ready to go again… that’s all any of us “negative people” are doing.

Superstitious, ridiculous, meticulous that’s what fans are 🙂

  165. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 2:34 pm

161, by what standards is Graves a proven passer? completed 57% of his passes last year. Not proven yet by most standards.

  167. manoa#1 October 1, 2012 2:37 pm

heard benny was’nt happy about redshirting rumor’s was he was gonna go on his mission and when he got back he was outta here. i guess chow got the message.

  168. jimmy the lock October 1, 2012 2:48 pm

    GO DONNA!

  169. Warrior Dave October 1, 2012 3:00 pm

    #167 Manoa #1,

If Benny is unhappy like you say, I have no confidence that he will return to UH after his mission. Dont think playing this year will make a difference.

  170. Manoa Mist October 1, 2012 3:02 pm

I like Fonua back there. Put Vele back at linebacker too. These kind of years are good for finding young guys who can play, who have heart no matter the score. I’m behind Chow, but man let’s try someone else at QB. SS is going to get killed out there. He got no moves and a slow release. UH might be better with a a gimmick offense, pistol, option, something that is just not mano a mano, as Curren likes to say. When they be bigger and stronger than you, mano a mano ain’t gonna work. If Norm can get big guys who can play, then we’ll see about his system.

  171. jonj October 1, 2012 3:09 pm

5-10 a year would leave you with 20-40 guys on offense and defense every season that are actual starter quality! do your math son! with the others being good special teams and backups . with 20 each year your talking a whole team that can actually step in and play… get realistic

  172. jonj October 1, 2012 3:10 pm

like i said we are hawaii not USC, Texas, FLorida n have quality recruits jump in our laps!

  173. cocobean October 1, 2012 3:11 pm

#167. Did you that rumor from Laura?

Kidding aside. We need all the help we can get. Like Chow said on his show in college there’s no waiver wire to pickup players. We got to make do with what we have.

Playing time now will have the biggest impact down the road. Can’t learn a job by reading a book or watching a video. You learn by hands on experience. For all the newie starters and rotation players the speed and physicality on an actual game is an eye openning experience.

  174. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 4:08 pm

I guess everyone is watching Tony Romo.

  175. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 4:12 pm

hubby is recording the Dallas game. He’s lucky I don’t care for television that much, because when he is home, he HOGS the TV.

  176. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 4:16 pm

I feel sorry for Coach Chow. His job isn’t easy.

    And Schroeder, too.

I wonder if either of them wishes he had stayed put on the mainland…

After all, who needs this kind of stress? People are so damn cruel.

  177. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 4:18 pm

And some people are even slamming Kekaula and the Norm Chow show.

I personally enjoy the show, because when I am feeling depressed about the game, Kekaula has the ability to uplift me and make me smile.

At the end of the show, I am happy.

  178. gigi-hawaii October 1, 2012 4:20 pm

And quit slamming the green backdrop.

It doesn’t bother me one bit.

  179. scène October 1, 2012 4:21 pm

Definitely consider that which you stated. Your favorite justification appeared to be at the internet the simplest thing to bear in mind of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed at the same time as people consider issues that they plainly do not recognise about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest as neatly as outlined out the whole thing with no need side-effects , other folks could take a signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thank you

  180. Kevin October 1, 2012 4:23 pm

The green backdrop is not even the shade of green UH uses.

  181. RedZone October 1, 2012 4:23 pm

I didn’t want to say it but I am with Manoa Mist. I would give Vele a shot at lb. He was a really good olb at Farrington. We seem to need help on the outside runs.

  182. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 4:29 pm

171.. So you assume 10 freshman play every year? come on. Out of 25 scholarships, you want to hit 5-10 quality players? Way to shoot for success..

  183. AlaWai October 1, 2012 4:33 pm

Schroeders numbers are posted in the UH website.

Passing gp-gs effic comp-att-int pct yds td lg avg/g

    Sean Schroeder 4 – 4 109.77 73-129-5 56.6 700 6 50 175.0

    Not bad numbers.

Our problems are on defense. This started with the loss of Moses Samia and is now compounded by the losses of Hanohano and Matagiese. UH did a good job on USC rushing. Once the injuries took place Reno ran it right up the middle. The replacements were not stout enough and now the coaches need to patchwork the defense. I say Hawaii will rebound this week. UH 27 Da odda guyz 21.

  184. cours de chant montréal October 1, 2012 4:39 pm

Thank you, I’ve just been searching for info approximately this topic for a long time and yours is the greatest I’ve came upon so far. But, what about the bottom line? Are you certain concerning the supply?|What i don’t realize is if truth be told how you’re not actually a lot more smartly-favored than you may be right now. You are very intelligent.

  185. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 4:41 pm

And your assuming all your recruits are out of high school. A lot of factors weigh in. Also when factoring missions, injuries, transfers, 5-10 aint gonna cut it.

2008- Haku Correa, Jeramy Bryant, Geordon Hanohano, Paipai, Art Laurel, Greg Alexander

2009- Alex Green, Zach Masch, Aaron Brown, Rodney Bradley, Joey Iosefa, Billy Ray, Tank Hopkins, John Lister., Chauncy Makainai. 9 good players

2010- Moses Samia, John Hardy-Tuliau, Beau Yap, Dave Lefotu, Allen Sampson, Sean Shigematsu, Tj Taimatuia.

2011- Will Gregory, Tavita Woodard, Mike Edwards, Trevor Davis, Justin Vele, Tyler Gray- coaches screw up, Ben Dew, Blake Muir, Ben Clark.

That already proves your theory way off. Guys are going to be ineligible as well. I didn’t even factor in the Walk ons who were better than most of our recruits.

  186. mililanimauka October 1, 2012 4:42 pm

    # 158 Manoa

very well thought out post. i too agree with you. we need to get our skilled players more involved. stretch the field before the play! this will open up so much. if we continue to bunch, we are going to get killed.

use stutz, davis and miah or ausie kid. i think they are the strength of our offense! CHOW, USE THEM. stop being so stubborn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  187. BKekoa ( 9th isle) October 1, 2012 4:47 pm

Support! UH football team, No matter what! Stop comparing & worring bout other football programs out there. Imagine how they feel everybody complaining. Need more support! Lift them up, make them feel good! Maybe den dey will build confidence & play much betta! Go Warriors!!

  188. mililanimauka October 1, 2012 4:55 pm

It seems there are 2 guys that stand out and want to play:

    defense: EDWARDS

    offense: STUTZMAN

my hats off to both these true warriors.

everyone else needs to learn from these to young men

  189. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 4:55 pm

    jeezy33:

Those are some very good names you listed.

  190. cheepono October 1, 2012 4:56 pm

  191. mililanimauka October 1, 2012 4:58 pm

there is a reason edwards and stutzman are captians.

  192. Pauoa Boy October 1, 2012 5:03 pm

I wish all our defensive recruits who initially signed over the past 2-3 years was here. Our defense would be deep, especially at linebacker. Check out if all these names would have stick and stayed with UH. Some went on missions, some did not qualify, some went JC route, some are grayshirting, some haven’t made it here yet, some quit or whatever etc… If they all would’ve stayed, do you think our recruiting is that bad. Some of these names are big time players…

    Veni Manu DE

    Aulola Tonga LB/S

    David Katina LB

    Tuulauena Lolohea LB

    Zach Quines LB

    Dominick Sierra LB

    Marcus Umu S

    Dejon Allen DE

    Quenton Brown LB

    Ronald Fields CB/S

    Gus Lavaka DT

    Anthony Pierce CB

    JT Turner CB/S

    Demar Dorsey CB

    Penitito Faalologo LB

    Tigi Hill S/LB

    Ben Mamea LB

    Earvin Sione DE

    Jesse Williams DT

  193. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 5:12 pm

    Pauoa Boy:

Just goes to show you how difficult it is to recruit to Hawaii AND keep them here.

  194. Pauoa Boy October 1, 2012 5:20 pm

    #183…

Those numbers aren’t telling the true story. A lot of those passes are short routes that are easy completions, yet he is still throwing only around 50%. We have abandoned the run pretty much most of the second half of these past couple games giving him more opportunity, but again the job ain’t getting done. Only around a 50% completion rating 6 TD’s in 4 games and 5 INT’s as well. Check the 3rd down conversion rating. Check how many passing plays we have pass 10 yards or first downs. If you look closer, you’ll see he is mediocre at moving this offense down the field. We haven’t scored a TD in 6 quarters of football. I mean he was doing okay during the first half of the Nevada game and then second half was a different story. I think he throws a nice ball but he is frustrating to watch as he just is not mobile and doesn’t get that ball out quick enough. During the games I’m yelling at the screen for him to get rid of the frikkin ball or run. If Coach is sticking with Schroeder than he needs to do something to help him out cause he is getting killed every game and killing us too.

  195. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 1, 2012 5:26 pm

    Gigi for President!!!

  196. jonj October 1, 2012 5:32 pm

Jeezy those r pretty good names but u also gotta remember a “good” recruit wont typically become a stater usually until his junior year so we still have sometime to tell. I mean we only got rid of junes top recruits wat 2 years ago?? I dont know why but mack couldnt get his bigs. 11th hour oregon took away keliikipi amongst others. 2008 i defenitely think was a bad year i think u forgot alex dunnachie 2009 u forgot kamalani alo whos gonna b a play maker, mike wadsworth (transfer)2010 bubba p., calen friel and dustin elisara 2011 kendrick VA, mike seller, ellis henderson(transfer) and i think lance williams gonna b a stud,. N when i say 5-10 good players i mean play makers/studs. the other guys are jus back ups n solid special teams players. So what im saying if you get a solid recruit basis where u get 5-10 solid recruits each giving typically 2-3yrs to develope can you lose and not have solid backups??

  197. jonj October 1, 2012 5:38 pm

i for got scott harding and david graves! david graves may not be the best pro quaterback but the kid is a stud! also jordan loeffler n kody afusia we have sometime to tell!

  198. Nakoa October 1, 2012 5:41 pm

Schroeder’s numbers are hugely inflated by the Lamar game and are misleading. He hasn’t been terrible but he has NO mobility and has a wind-up throwing motion that has his ball hang up there sometimes. Let’s give graves a shot, he’s paid his dues.

  199. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 5:42 pm

OKay.. when I add those names jonj provided, I’m really having a hard time swallowing the cupboard was bare argument.

To me the needs weren’t assessed right… which for a new incoming coach, is understandable. BUT that also gives more reason to keep one assistant coach on each end of the ball. Assistants that know the player personnel.

  200. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 5:46 pm

I, too, think David deserves a chance to show what he can do and not just mop up duty handing off the ball… Players perform differently under game time conditions.

  201. koakane i5 October 1, 2012 5:47 pm

    😆

  202. jonj October 1, 2012 5:52 pm

the cup boards r bare arguement is bull! we have the people. yes we are young but no way we should be getting blown out and we should at the very least put in a team that can compete at anytime. if chow is a guru… why is he not tailoring his offense to his strength of players?? And the biggest BS line i heard from him is that the running game keeps the offense on the field gives help to his defense when really it should be having his offense on the field no matter run or pass to move the chains helps his defense

  203. Slugger October 1, 2012 6:01 pm

    Mahalo, Benny!

  204. jeezy33 October 1, 2012 6:12 pm

I think you need to strive for 15-20 good recruits give or take. Then, what really separates the good teams from great teams as far as HAWAII goes is when we have that special QB like Colt Brennan and a few play makers who can really make things happen. Lets remember, The good Nevada, Boise, Utah and other non BCS schools at the time had a special QB to go with a few play makers that made things happen. Yes I know Boise and Utah BCS wins had special defenses too but I don’t expect us to get on that sort of level. But you never know. If Norm can bring in a special QB , maybe Graham is it, and give us a few play makers, I think we can get back on track sooner than later.

  205. Pauoa Boy October 1, 2012 6:13 pm

I think Benny can help boost the linebacker corps. He seems like a Pisa Tinoisamoa type mold of linebacker.

  206. SAWARRIOR October 1, 2012 6:16 pm

DC better rethink his defensive schemes.

  207. SAWARRIOR October 1, 2012 6:18 pm

    204. graham won’t a difference unless he has someone to throw to.

  208. SAWARRIOR October 1, 2012 6:20 pm

    make***

  209. Slugger October 1, 2012 6:26 pm

I’d like to see Graves on the field as QB & see how he does. From previous Yr’s practice: he can pass, scramble, hand off the ball, block after that, the only thing he needed to work on was patience in the pocket. I think he has more zip on his ball than Sean.

I’ll wait to see how SS does in next game, tho. I support the team.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  210. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 6:27 pm

If, over the next few years, we find that we cannot recruit the kind of player we need to play the pro style with 8-10 wins and get ranked… what then? What kind of coaching do we look for? Will MRC take the hit for Chow’s hiring or Freitas, or JD?

  211. Slugger October 1, 2012 6:28 pm

    ST –

I keep forgetting to ask…what is Greg Alexander doing? Is his knee ok? Hope so…he was a nice guy.

  212. SAWARRIOR October 1, 2012 6:31 pm

if newly appointed FBS schools can compete with NEVADA and only lose by 13 points, why can’t we?! Texas State is only in its first year as a D1 football program and had the lead over NEVADA 21-20 at the half. Texas State eventually lost 34-21, but they competed. a lot of folks here make lame excuses, we young, new coach, schemes etc… whatevas. getting blown-out by 45 and 47 points is ok with some folks here.

BTW- Texas State played NEVADA right after us.

  213. SAWARRIOR October 1, 2012 6:37 pm

    woohoo, cowgirls lost!!!

  214. Stephen Tsai October 1, 2012 6:40 pm

Garcia-Williams and Fonua were with the first team today.

  215. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 6:40 pm

    Slugger…

I have a feeling Greg isn’t doing as well as we would like to think. He’s been in and out of the hospital for multiple operations on his knees. Complications after another… Just recently, he closed his facebook page…

  216. lava October 1, 2012 6:43 pm

Schroeder HAS been terrible, but Chow has been and apparently will continue to be worse.

Norm C how I can make a mess of this team as a stubborn coach.

  217. SAWARRIOR October 1, 2012 7:03 pm

if u guys want to see our offense compete, chow needs to shelve the smash-mouth football and go to a Ace formation, with the QB in a shotgun at least 50% of the time. 2 WR, 1 slot, TE, 1 back.

chow’s offense, 2WR, TE, 2 backs makes it easy for the D, they put 8 in the box and it’s over for us. the Ace is better suited to our personnel than the pure pro-set O. IMO. i have to put IMO so as not to pizz off the sensitive types. the Ace formation is a variation of the pro set/style O.

everyone talks about the Pistol, but the Pistol is just the Ace formation with the QB in the shotgun (2 yards shallow) and the Back directly behind the QB. same smell, different name.

  218. islandman October 1, 2012 7:11 pm

Reminder last year BYU beat UH, 41-20. Both Graves and Shane Austin played. Passing yards 282, net rushing yards was 17 (44 yds gained -27 yds lost). Ross Apo (BYU) caught two TD passes.

UH was leading 6-0 after the first quarter …13-10 at the half .

  219. SAWARRIOR October 1, 2012 7:20 pm

er… sub the slot for a hybrid slot/te called an H-back or S-back in todays terminology. i been drinkin’ sry.

  220. Moocher October 1, 2012 7:28 pm

    i’ll stick with shroeder.

what can you do when you dont have receivers that can separate.

what can yo do when because of that, you have to sit and wait for the pattern to ripen.

you need to remember, chows offense is all about throwing to spots on the field that should be open…and that of course is going to make shroeder wait in the pocket with no real other choice until he sees a receiver near the spot where the ball should go…and that also explains why his eyes are glued on a receiver.

run and shoot….receivers decided on the fly where to go, they had options, broke hard, and the quarterback delivered. in chows offense, the quarterback has to wait until a receiver gets to a certain spot or seem.

in my opinion shroeder is handcuffed by receivers inability to get into the right seem or spots in a short amount of time with enough separation. and that would hurt any quarterback.

i say cut shroeder some slack, the kid proved he can play against SC. in my opinion, it’s the receivers as a unit who have not as to this day proved they can play. compound that with a weak and problematic O-line, and yeah, it would make any quarterback look terrible.

  221. Hank October 1, 2012 7:29 pm

    #214 Hope it works!

  222. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 7:49 pm

A quarterback that can scramble can help create some separation for his receivers just by being a dual threat. A Qback in motion causes the defensive back guarding the potential receiver to hesitate and that hesitation can create separation.

  223. jonj October 1, 2012 7:52 pm

yes we all should strive for something better but im talking about being realistic! if you wanna “shoot for the STARS” as you say why not go 25 for 25 every year recruiting wise and we also should have a QB who throws 20-25 passes every game! lol… 5-10 stud recruits is all we need for now. Im not saying when we get better as a program thats our goal… Id love to see 20 solid every year!

Also remember Graham only started 10 games his whole varsity career! his dad is the one who put stars behind his name. Ive read blogs and everyone thought he was going to a D2-D3 team. you can even watch his ohio state spring game his highlights were the defenses highlights all interception and sacks. kid has a rocket arm

  224. jonj October 1, 2012 7:53 pm

    20 of 25 aka 80%

  225. islandman October 1, 2012 7:55 pm

Hope Shroeder can get rid of the ball faster.

Norm said in his press conference today, San Diego St. is a very good football team with outstanding speed and a difficult defense with many schemes.

If BYU was supposed to be a not too good offensive team, what will San Diego St. do against UH ?

  226. Dino October 1, 2012 8:05 pm

Coach Tomey ran the typical 2 back pro set offense back in the late 70’s/early 80’s.

  227. NinjaWarriorTurtle October 1, 2012 8:08 pm

Northern Illinois is 4-1. They do it with 2-star or no-star players. So I surmise that winning is a result of coaching. Here’s their record so far this season.

    Sep 1 Iowa L 17-18

    Sep 8 Tenn-Martin W 35-7

    Sep 15 at Army W 41-40

    Sep 22 Kansas W 30-23

    Sep 29 C Michigan W 55-24

A HOUSE – sorry, it was on around 8:00-8:30

  230. Pauoa Boy October 1, 2012 8:28 pm

I will cut Schroeder a some slack based on how the offense is supposed to run but he is not helping the cause regardless. A good QB can move the defense with his eyes as well as with his feet. He does neither very well. There are times when the receivers will get jammed here and there and the Oline will break down but the QB can still make the play and has the backs that can release as well as the TE to use as a check down receiver. The offensive passing game does not revolve around throwing to spots on the field. There are timing routes where Schroeder is supposed to put the football where the receiver should go but that is not what the offense is based on. The way the offense is supposed to work, is by running the ball to set up the pass. With the two backs split side by side it’s supposed to make the defense guess on which gap the backs will run to keeping the D on their toes. When the running game is moving the ball it then makes the defense have to respect the run and play action by pulling the safeties in closer to the line and leaving the middle of the field open for deep throws. Plus, with the two backs split it gives Schroeder more time to throw the ball as they can pick up the outside blitz. Ultimately this is the way the offense is meant to function. The problem we’re having is that the run game is not as effective as we want it to be. So without an established running game the offense is put in a difficult situation to have to throw more than we want to. Defenses are keying in on this and thus making it easy to stop our offense from progressing up the field.

  231. Not an Expert October 1, 2012 9:03 pm

It was best that Rolo left Hawaii. He will have greater opportunities to progress and become a head coach with a hefty salary. There have been many coaches who left Hawaii and have done well for themselves. Rolo will be one of them. Do not think they will be able to afford Rolo. He will only come back after his successful stints due his love of the islands and its people and by then money will not be a consideration for him.

Best to Rolo, it is his destiny to succeed as a head coach in the near future. Sorry to say that it will be a school other than Hawaii. Just my take.

  234. papajoe2 October 1, 2012 9:13 pm

Some of you think Anae was dirty. Check out Ohio State. Coach sent tapes of a Michigan or Michigan State trying to gouge the eyes of one of his players. In the tape is also shows the OSU player with his hands inside the players facemask. Also an OSU player was suspended a game for choking an opposing player in a pile up.

  235. madeinhawaii October 1, 2012 9:16 pm

    Dino

That is correct and 9-2 and 8-3 were his best years out of the ten he coached here. He did better at Arizona.

    Good morning!

  244. wafan October 2, 2012 2:29 am

    It is getting ridiculous.

  245. al October 2, 2012 3:03 am

the problem with watching the game on tv is simple.

one does not see the whole field.

one is unable to see what is happening as the play develops.

    a qb will look bad when;

    a. the oline does not provide a pocket long enough for him to set up.

    b. without the time, even johnny unitas would have been toast.

    c. if the receivers do not create separation who you going to throw to?

    d. if the receivers run the wrong route…

e, if the receivers drop passes..

    f. all of the above.

  246. al October 2, 2012 3:03 am

…and then there are the arm chairs qbs who “know football”.

  247. al October 2, 2012 3:05 am

recruiting has been pretty lame for years.

we are now starting to go out and work our tails off as if we are earning 1.1 million dollars annually.

  248. al October 2, 2012 3:08 am

its going to take time to resurrect this program which was beginning to tailspin years ago. at least now we are trying to do the right thing to right the ship.

“our day will come”…norm chow (and ruby and the romantics.)

  249. al October 2, 2012 3:08 am

    …nuff said.
