Back to work

The Warriors will spend little time lamenting yesterday’s one-sided loss Because of Friday’s road game against BYU, the schedule has been rearranged. Today is considered Monday, which means the Warriors will have meetings and conditioning drills this afternoon. The game plan against BYU will be installed tomorrow; it usually is implemented on a Tuesday. The Warriors will leave Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors are hopeful running back Joey Iosefa, who was held out of the Nevada game because of his ankle […]

Game day: Nevada

By Stephen Tsai on September 22, 2012

This is the Mountain West opener for both teams, but it sure feels like another WAC game. This is the Warriors’ best scenario: Playing a good opponent at home. The Pack should be well-rested and comfortable after arriving on a charter flight, staying at Turtle Bay and practicing at Leilehua High. We’ll see if the weather has any bearing.

The people’s choice

By Stephen Tsai on September 21, 2012

Daughter knows best. Since the day he was hired as UH head coach in December, Norm Chow has been asked whether he favors the nickname “Rainbows” or “Warriors.” His daughter Maile suggested the debate should be put to a vote. It’s too late for this year, but sometime next year, Chow would like to stage a contest in which fans can vote for the team nickname. We figured this should be the WB Caucus. So, readers, tell us which of […]

Time’s a wastin’

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2012

Let’s see . . . 1. UH got scammed on the Stevie Wonder concert. 2. UH responded with two bad news conferences — A) When Jim Donovan was left alone to sorta-sorta explain why there would be no concert and, B) When Donovan was the only UH official not invited for the announcement — in front of Hawaii Hall, with no amps — that an investigation would be launched into the mess. That was in July. There will be a […]

Fare play

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2012

Nevada will be the first football team to take advantage of the Kokua assistance program when it charters to Hawaii on UH’s dime. OK, make that 1,500,000 dimes. As part of the … er … um … agreement for joining the Mountain West, the Warriors are paying each visiting team from the Pacific time zone up to $150,000 to charter to and from Hawaii. (It’s $175,000 for charters if your team is in a city where your nose bleeds regularly.) […]

Sneak previews

Every Monday, the Warriors stage a mini situational scrimmage involving redshirts and developing players. During yesterday’s event, safety Mike Martin and cornerback Brian Clay delivered the biggest hits. Unfortunately, Donnie King was the recipient on both. But King, as always, bounced right back up. He’s a tough receiver. Running back Marcus Langkilde scored the scrimmages’s only touchdown, on a 1-yard rush. The coaches are high on Langkilde, who has been under the radar (off the radar? Not on the radar?). […]

Samia out for the season

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2012

Tough deal for nose tackle Moses Samia, who will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL, head coach Norm Chow announced today. Samia will undergo surgery after the swelling subsides. Look for Tavita Woodard, Marcus Malepeai and, maybe, Mike Andrade to join the rotation at NT/DT. * * * * * Well, technically, the UH coaches were back in meetings and video sessions yesterday, but implementing this week’s game plan begins today. The Warriors will have […]

Day after

By Stephen Tsai on September 16, 2012

Yep, the sun rose again. That’s the thing. The world is on a strict schedule. Whether a football team from Hawaii wins or loses, the sun rises the next day. * * * * * • Last night’s effort was more along the lines of UH’s offensive philosophy: Run to set up the pass; run to set up more runs. The Warriors have enough good backs. They also have rugged linemen. Right guard Dave Lefotu just might be the next […]
