Aloha means Las Cruces

By Stephen Tsai on October 9, 2012

On today’s conference call, New Mexico coach Bob Davie spoke of the challenge of playing a game in paradise: “I told them last night: Don’t expect to see much. This is a total business trip. In fact, I may even get, like, some pictures of, like, the beach, some girls in bikinis, some of the beautiful geography, and just put it in their rooms for ’em. Just kind of put big pictures in their room. I may put together a […]

Laurel availability in question

By Stephen Tsai on October 8, 2012

Weak-side linebacker Art Laurel has a sprained ACL and his availability for Saturday’s homecoming game is in question. The diagnosis, though, is better than initially feared after he suffered the injury in the first half against San Diego State. If Laurel can’t play, Kendrick Van Ackeren would get the start. * * * * * * It was an annual ritual. The blog host would grumble about the lack of football players inducted into UH’s Circle of Honor. JD the […]

Bear market

By Stephen Tsai on October 7, 2012

Sometimes you get the bear. Sometimes the bear gets you. * * * * * The Warriors will learn more today on the conditions of weak-side linebacker Art Laurel and defensive back John Hardy-Tuliau. Laurel left with a problem with his right knee. He was not on crutches after yesterday’s game, and there is no decision on whether he will undergo an MRI. Hardy-Tuliau left with what was described as a concussion. Both started at new positions yesterday — Laurel […]

Game day: SDSU

By Stephen Tsai on October 6, 2012

Two admittedly struggling teams get to face off in this renewal of what was once an intense rivalry. The focus will be on the defense, where both teams have made adjustments to scale down schemes. * * * * * Former UH linebacker Adam Leonard, now married and living in L.A., will be leading the Warriors’ chapel service this morning.

Stay classy, San Diego

By Stephen Tsai on October 5, 2012

San Diego — If you don’t love San Diego, something is wrong with you. Great people, great weather, great food. The Warriors, though, won’t be experiencing San Diego until tonight. The Warriors have a walk-through at the Ching athletic complex this morning. They depart this afternoon. They won’t arrive at the hotel until about 10 p.m Pacific time. * * * * * Am I the only one impressed that the University of San Diego Toreros have their own custom-designed […]

Another day in paradise

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2012

There are a couple of benefits to the Warriors’ commando-styled approach to the road trip to San Diego. By departing tomorrow afternoon, the players will have another full day of classes. Also, it gives the coaches an extra day to set the travel roster. On the bubble is receiver Darius Bright, who resumed practicing yesterday. He missed the past two games because of a shoulder injury. It appeared Bright would need another week of rehabilitation. But yesterday, he took some […]

Depth consolidation

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2012

The Warriors are going deep into the roster in search of defensive linemen. Hunter Thomson stayed after Tuesday’s practice to receive tutoring from defensive line coach Lewis Powell. Thomson received medical clearance to play following Monday’s practice. Kaeo Alo, the older brother of UH linebacker Kamalani Alo, was summoned from the scout team, where he was a fullback. He actually was wearing his yellow jersey when he worked with the defensive regulars. At 5-9 and 260, Alo has no problem […]

Hanohano's UH career ends

By Stephen Tsai on October 2, 2012

Defensive tackle Geordon Hanohano is retiring from college football after being diagnosed with a neck stinger, head coach Norm Chow confirmed this morning. “It’s heartbreaking, very heartbreaking,” Chow said. “He’s a good player, and a good, young man.” Hanohano suffered the injury in the first quarter of the BYU game. Surgery is not required, but because this is his second stinger, he has been advised he risks severe medical problems if he continues to play. He has used his redshirt […]
