Second half

By Stephen Tsai on October 25, 2012

After last week’s bye, the Warriors depart today for the start of the second half of their season. The Warriors practiced for 90 minutes this morning, then had a training table and attended classes before this afternoon’s scheduled departure to Los Angeles, where they will stay overnight. They will go by charter flight to Fort Collins tomorrow afternoon. Because of injuries, the Warriors will be traveling with 62 players — two fewer than the Mountain West limit. There will be […]

Iosefa is back

By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2012

The Warriors slowly are making progress in the good-health department with the return of running back Joey Iosefa, who missed the past four games because of a fracture in his right foot. Iosefa played both tailback and fullback during yesterday’s practice. It also appears that middle linebacker Benneton Fonua has a chance to play this week. As of now, he is on the travel roster for Saturday’s road game against Colorado State. Fonua has been held out because of inflammation […]

Brrrr … it's cold in here

By Stephen Tsai on October 23, 2012

Although snow is forecast for Thursday and Friday in Fort Collins, Colo., it should be dry for Saturday’s game between UH and Colorado State. Dry, but chilly. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 40s at kickoff, with the mercury dipping into the 30s during the game. * * * * * * With Art Laurel back to relatively good health and Benny Fonua still on the mend, practice today should feature this No. 1 group of linebackers: Laurel […]

Pu‘u-Robinson pau for season

By Stephen Tsai on October 22, 2012

Defensive lineman Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson will not play the rest of the season while his surgically repaired finger mends, coach Norm Chow said after yesterday’s 90-minute practice. Pu‘u-Robinson suffered the injury on the first play of his first UH start, against San Diego State, two weeks ago. He played the rest of the game. But X-rays a couple of days later showed the injury to the middle finger on his left hand. Chow said Siasau Matagiese, Haku Correa and Kaeo Alo […]

Utah prep LB commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on October 21, 2012

Drake Miller,  6-2, 210-pound linebacker from Bingham (Utah) High, said he’s accepted a football scholarship offer from the Warriors. Miller said he turned down an offer from Utah State. He also received interest from Utah. Miller is a physical defender who chose UH because of  “Norm Chow and his program.” D-line coach Lewis Powell was the point recruiter. Here’s his highlight video: Miller. * * * * * Changes are expected in preparation for this coming Saturday’s road game against […]

Wait 'til next year

By Stephen Tsai on October 20, 2012

The Warriors have decided to redshirt freshman defensive tackles Mike Andrade and Hunter Thomson. Neither has played this year, although Thomson was on the travel roster to San Diego State two weeks ago. The moves will enable both to improve physically. Both were held out early because of medical issues. That leaves the Warriors with two main defensive tackles (Siasau Matagiese and Haku Correa) and an assortment of double-duty d-ends (Beau Yap, Tavita Woodard and, possibly, Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson). Kaeo Alo, […]

On schedule

By Stephen Tsai on October 19, 2012

Maybe UH will have a permanent AD in place next month. Maybe it won’t. What is certain is that one of the usual duties of a UH AD — football scheduling — will be in the control of UH coach Norm Chow. In every other UH sport, the head coach is in charge of scheduling. Chow didn’t have a say in next year’s schedule, which already is locked with five non-confrence games and the Mountain West Conference’s reservations. But after […]

"Heal-Up Week"

By Stephen Tsai on October 18, 2012

Coach Norm Chow has declared this “Heal-Up Week” with concise practices and more rest for the ailing Warriors. Yesterday’s ailing list included middle linebacker Benneton Fonua, who has strained knee, and right tackle Sean Shigematsu, who was in a medical boot because of a sprained right ankle. Later, guard Ben Dew was carted off after aggravating a leg injury. Until the injury, the second-unit offensive line was: LT Jordan Loeffler, LG Dew, C Kody Afusia, RG Frank Loyd and RT […]
