Iosefa is back

The Warriors slowly are making progress in the good-health department with the return of running back Joey Iosefa, who missed the past four games because of a fracture in his right foot.

Iosefa played both tailback and fullback during yesterday’s practice.

It also appears that middle linebacker Benneton Fonua has a chance to play this week. As of now, he is on the travel roster for Saturday’s road game against Colorado State. Fonua has been held out because of inflammation in the area surrounding his left ACL.

* * * * * *

There still is a long way to go before a 13th game becomes even remotely a reality. But there is one interesting factor in negotiations. UH is requesting that if it were to rally and have a 6-6 record โ€” the minimum qualification for entry into the Hawaii Bowl โ€” the 13th game would be canceled.

Yep, that’s Rainbow Wahine softball players Brynne Buchanan and Kaia Parnaby serving as student trainers during football practices.

Do not know how many folks travel but look forward to seeing any fans as we share the same passion….Go Warriors!!!!!

UH is requesting that if it were to rally and have a 6-6 record โ€” the minimum qualification for entry into the Hawaii Bowl โ€” the 13th game would be canceled.

So, with all the roadblocks to overcome to make the 13th game possible (NCAA, previous event scheduled at Aloha Stadium, TV already showing basketball, 30,000+ ticket sales), UH wants to be able to cancel the game at the last moment? Temple would need to cancel their travel plans at the last moment? Who pays for that?

With all of the tough teams that UH would have to beat in order to win 6 games this season, UH is going to worry about losing to Temple at home? So, UH would be willing to eat Temple’s travel costs and all the other expenses to avoid losing a game?

UH makes MUCH more money with a home game than they make in the Hawaii Bowl. If this is just coming down to money, UH would make more playing on 12/8 at Aloha Stadium than they make playing in the Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium.

  10. Garret October 24, 2012 3:19 am

Good news about Iosefa and Fonua. UH can use both this week.

  11. Garret October 24, 2012 3:22 am

UH is now a 7-point underdog. The line went from 4.5 to 5.5 to 6.5 to 7.

  14. AlaWai October 24, 2012 5:44 am

I remember watching the emergence of Bill Walsh and his WC offense when the 49’rs started their surge in the 80’s . Walsh turned an undersized line with speed and cunning into All-Pros. He took unheralded backs and receivers and created a scoring machine. The biggest difference was his faith in Joe Montana, who many felt could not compete in the NFL. In a Sports Illustrated article his critique of most QB’s was their lack of faith in believing their WRs would be in the right place at the right time. Montana took it to a new level. Walsh said that Montana sometimes released too quickly. He also worked on “spot passing” where the ball was thrown to locations where only the receiver could catch it. Walsh and Montana were perfectionists. I see the same characteristics in Dr. Chow. It took a year for Walsh to instill his ideas into the 49rs. When it finally caught on…well the rest is NFL history. Not many of those 49rs made it into the Hall of Fame but they made me a lifelong fan. It will be a major turning point when the light goes on in each Warriors head and they grasp what the WC can do. I look forward to the day when we all are suggesting names for Hawaii’s own offensive machine.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

GARRET – The Temple game may generate more income for UH than the Hawaii Bowl but doesn’t the Hawaii Bowl have to have a minimum of 25,000 fans to continue its existence?

We hardly get that many fans for the Hawaii Bowl if we had, say Tulsa v Fordham. Of course if we had a “name” schools like Nebraska v Washington playing we could get a number that exceeds the required number.

    POMAI: UH17 and CSU-10

  30. Shoko October 24, 2012 7:33 am

I would guess a game against Temple would draw a crowd closer to this season’s average (31,500). If they played a team such as Wisconsin (2009-40,549) and Cincinnatti (2008-40,069), they might exceed the Hawaii Bowl average of 39,100. In fact, a Temple game might be even lower if the Warriors get closer to a 2-10 season as that seems to directly affect attendence. Also, don’t forget the payout that the Hawaii Bowl provides to participating teams, which is around 750,000, if not mistaken.

  40. Derek October 24, 2012 8:38 am

One website has Hawaii getting 10 points. Must be the altitude, cold weather, on the road, bad rush defense, everything. All points to negative vibes, but the only people that matters are the UH players and coaches. They just have to execute, and believe. Actually, this is one of the better chances for UH to possibly get a win. No way Jose against Boise St., at Fresno St., and at Air Force. 50-50 at home against UNLV, and should be a small favorite against South Alabama. Just being a realist.

  41. Pauoa Boy October 24, 2012 8:41 am

  42. tommui October 24, 2012 8:42 am

Thanks SHOKO! Undercounted the attendance at a non-UH Hawaii Bowl.

Wonder how many we need in attendance to take care of the $750,000 payoff for the teams plus the usual gifts etc. Wonder if ESPN or whoever TV network will add to the pot.

See one of our “fans” forgot to take his/her medications.

    – The Senior Walk should still take place on the South Alabama Game, since there is a mathematical chance that the Warriors could be 6-6 following that game.

    – Is the Nakoa Banquet still going to be set for Sunday Dec 2nd?

    – Who pays for the cancelled travel cost of Temple?

    – Will this be a Day Game, so as not to conflict with the 7pm MBBall Game vs Pepperdine?

Yesterday’s comment on gas prices made me go look up world prices.. in 1986 when I went to Japan, gas there was about $1.00 per liter or $3.80/gal… now it’s at $7.00. Norway is $10.12/gal… while Venezuela is $0.9/gal.

Can we build a pipeline from Venezuela?

  72. Former UH Athlete October 24, 2012 10:50 am

    #11 @ Garrett,

The spread moving to 7 points is pretty justified. UH has been awful on the road this year and traditionally, UH does not play well on the mainland. Add in near freezing temps and potential snow.. and 7 seems about right. According to vegasinsider, 94% of the tickets have been bet on CSU to cover. However, CSU is 1-6 ATS and lost its last 6 games both straight up and ATS.

Total is 52… I’m smelling the under on this one. I think UH continues to open the playcalling and Gregory will have a very solid game. MVP of Saturday might be Alex Dunnachie by flipping field position.

    UH wins ugly 17-13

Saturday’s pre-game headline: “The resistible force vs The movable object”

  73. jimmy the lock October 24, 2012 10:51 am

The bad – Playing on the road again. Worse is at altitude. Cold.

The good – Not on primetime tv.

    GO WARRIORS!

  74. Former UH Athlete October 24, 2012 10:57 am

UH vs CSU post game headlines: “Punters Steal the Show – Combine for 500 yds”

    I joke, I joke…

As long as UH doesn’t make the stupid mistakes (ie OL knocking the ball out from Schroeder), and pound away with Will Gregory. UH can win.

Can the defense please step up and force some turnovers? UH hasn’t forced a turnover since 1stQ vs BYU (11 straight quarters).

  75. jimmy the lock October 24, 2012 11:00 am

The good news is oil prices are dropping. Think I’m going to order a tanker to fill my underground tank.

Looking for the Warriors to have a good start. Can’t give up early TD’s and play catch-up. Hoping the D can create turnovers to make things a little easier for the O. Or maybe hope the O can sustain drives and score and make things easier for the D.

A win in CO. will be huge in my book. All 4 pages and growing.

  76. madeinhawaii October 24, 2012 11:01 am

CSU has given up an average of 31 points per game while UH has given up 42 points per game.

You have to be a total idiot to think Chow could coach this team to 6-6 this season. A Total Idiot. We could bring back some of the great names in the past few years and Chow still ain’t going to field a competitive team under his totally predictable play-calling. We suck, and we will continue to suck. Season is over. Recruits already passing us up for bigger and better programs that will better utilize their talents and better develop them as players. I don’t blame them. There is no hope for this bunch. Sorry, truth hurts.

To say this is not all on Chow is to suggest he inherited a bunch of losers. I will neber accept that. We have plenty of talent. Chow is clueless as to how to turn that into results. This IS all on Chow.

I think Coulter was mosy probably referring to Obama’s very unpresidential mention of “we have aircraft carriers that planes can land on” and “we have boats that go underwater called submarines” quips to Governor Romney at that last debate. Think those narratives by the prez’ made him look silly

    Uh-ho . . . it’s THE RETURN OF THE THREE-HEADED POLITCAL TALK!!!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ .

    Not a ‘Watchmen’ fan.

The Coulter comment was for saying I’m a simpleton and the tweet she sent out using the word “retard”. My niece has down’s syndrome and I felt Coulter disrespected her and the millions of others on this planet. I still have not read that she apologized…sorry for the digression.

Off to enjoy the sights, sounds, and food of Oahu! Laterz crocodile.

  102. lava October 24, 2012 12:07 pm

Not sure why people are predicting (probably just hoping) UH can beat anyone, given that we can’t even beat New Mexico at home. What happened to that excuse about travel? New Mexico was 3-33 between 2009 and 2011, and had not won a single home game. The players are not highly recruited, and have grown accustomed to losing. So a first year head coach takes the Lobos to Hawaii and beats the home team?

Hawaii players have a history of winning, and are much more highly thought of talent-wise than New Mexico’s players. A less talented team came away with an easy victory.

What have you done for us Chow? Do something. Anything.

forgot that the ASA moved to Ft Huachuca on the fabulous “plains” or desert hole on top of a mountain or plateau – at least Devens allowed us to go into Boston and other near by towns

dang – how come we were not offered “pro-pay”? guess they just considered our MOS would take care of us – finally, reached 18 WPM and then immediately moved into another MOS watching little blurps on a screen – made us feel crossed eyed and hypnotized.

    35. Yep, tickets sold was 26,254 and the turnstile count was 16,134 for the 2005 Hawaii Bowl between Nevada and Central Florida. I think Nevada and UCF had to eat the price of the unsold tickets using someone of their payout money. Still, tho, 16,000 in a 50,000 stadium probably looked depressing on national TV.

We hardly get that many fans for the Hawaii Bowl if we had, say Tulsa v Fordham. Of course if we had a “name” schools like Nebraska v Washington playing we could get a number that exceeds the required number.

    tommui,

Don’t forget that NO “name” school like Nebraska or Washington will be playing in the Hawaii Bowl because that will go to a CUSA school. The only CUSA school that will draw any local fans is SMU, but they won’t bring any of their own. Worst case would be a MWC-CUSA matchup like Nevada-East Carolina where neither school would bring any fans and Hawaii fans wouldn’t show up either.

UH is required to pay for Waikiki hotel rooms for 100+ people (players, coaches, others) for a week for the bowl game, which eats significantly into the bowl payout. UH also has to give bonuses to the coaches and other things that really cuts into the profit–where UH doesn’t have to pay any extra for an extra home game.

    Nice feature on Cody VonAppen.

Cody VonAppen was there that day, enjoying the usually friendly waterfalls at the natural wonder Slippery Slide at Waipahee, on the island of Kauai, with his family and several Hawaii football players. When the waters turned deadly, sucking then 6-year-old Cody under, Smith was the one who lifted the boy to safety.

He died, at age 20, saving Cody.

“Yeah, I still think about it,” VonAppen said last week while sitting in a WOU football office conference room, book bag on the table, after seven hours of classes.

“I tatted on my leg, got Shannon Smith across my leg here,” he said, pointing at the scripted name, tattooed on his calf, just below his knee. “I’m just thankful for what he did for me.”

In five games, the once-maligned VonAppen hasn’t thrown an interception. More importantly, he’s thrown 12 touchdowns and run for five more. He leads the team in rushing (458 yards) and passing (1,558 yards) and averages nearly 300 yards a game in total offense.

“A year ago, I wouldn’t have imagined him throwing for 400 yards in a 66-point win,” WOU head coach Arne Ferguson said. “But with his work ethic and believing in himself, he’s done it.”

When JJ was brought in to replace Von Appen the system was broke. We needed to completely re-tool and that’s what he did. We had nothing to loose by making a complete change in the system. It worked. You can see what happened the first year and the subsequent years he and his system was at UH. I think it is clear that the system JJ installed allowed us to recruit competively and win consistently.

When Mack was replaced by Chow the system wasn’t broke, it simply needed some tweaking to get back on track. Remember if it hadn’t been but for a few points in a game or so UH would have been headed to the Hawaii Bowl and we wouldn’t be having his conversation now.

It is my understanding the JD wasn’t in favor of firing Mack and wanted to give him a chance to to get things back on track and finish the last year of his contract. This ruffled some feathers in the adminstration and maybe elsewhere. I would be curious as to who made the push to replace Mack before his contract was up.

By starting over with a new coach and system before it was time and before we had the right personnel to run it has put us in the position we are now in. And that is sad.

With all that being said, I am a long time season ticket holder and I will give my full support to Coach Chow to getting this program headed in the right direction.

If fails to do that within a reasonable time, then he will probably suffer the same fate as Mack but with the legacy of Von Appen.

Good luck to Coach Chow and the Warriors.

KHON-2 evening news reported on whether Frank Tanabe’s ballot will count (should not, according to archaic state law).

Don’t get it — the while point of an absentee ballot is because you know you can’t be in a voting booth any time on Nov’ 6. Should the reason count? I can understand if you going be in prison on that day . . . but, for most other reasons? Your darn vote should count if you do abs’ ballot.

Not to be insensitive….but Cody von Appen, really? I just can’t find myself cheering.

I mean, honestly, i don’t know the kid at all, so it’s not a personal attack or anything like that, in fact, he could be a very good / nice young man.

However, that way Fred acted while head coach at UH, the way he represented the program, us as fans, the state, the things he said, to be honest, they were embarrassing. Really embarrassing.

For me anyway, almost like Frank Arnold. I just am not 100% all in supporting Gib because of Frank. I don’t know Gib, never met him, he might be a wonderful person (despite about 80% of his team digging out), but because I lived thru the Frank era….NOPE!

I wish no harm on either of them, no ill will or anything like that. But excited about their exploits?

    Not me!

    # 178. “Child of” the famous (or infamous, in this case) accounts seem to somehow hold an obligatory fascination, at the very least.

  183. SAWARRIOR October 24, 2012 7:39 pm

    178. so when someone don’t support JJ, Mac, chow or whom ever, you should understand. everyone has their own personal “thing” going on. lol

  184. SAWARRIOR October 24, 2012 7:41 pm

179, sry. he aint’ no local. if he’s local, every military kid here for their tour is local. IMO

  185. clyde October 24, 2012 8:05 pm

For what it’s worth: Cody grew up in Hawaii from about the age of 5, and lists Kailua as his hometown on the Western Oregon web site. Kinda “local” to me.

  186. Chicken Grease October 24, 2012 8:08 pm

No joke. PBS Hawaii’s showing their show, Nature, right now. An episode called “Magic of the Snowy Owl.” [emphasis added.] One od the mother Snowy Owl’s oweltte’s has just died . . . and she is feeding it to the rest of her children. Got ornithologist version of Dr. Lecter?

The father Snowy Owl is no where to be found.

Eyyueeeuuwwww. Do we want our Warriors to, uh, um, do we want them to really play Temple?

Oh, no. Polar bears arrive on the scene. Oh. They move on. Even THEY can’t bear (pardon the pun) the owlness of these owls.

I gotta go pray (not “prey” like how these Snowy Owls do), now.

  187. Chicken Grease October 24, 2012 8:12 pm

    One od

That, uh, should’ve been “one of” and not “one od.”

Mosquitoes seem to attack resting Snowy Owls with fervor, per this show. Does it matter? When yo’ mama is feedin’ ya’ to the rest yo’ siblings?

    Back to praying.

  189. cocobean October 24, 2012 8:41 pm

Remember Cody from his days in youth basketball. Never coached him but coached against his teams many times. He fit in with the “local” kids, could speak fluent pidgin when necessary.

One time he told one of our players who was showboating after hitting a three, “eh, no ack.”

    He’s “local” in my book.

Garret: i thought that the Hawaii Bowl was a privately owned operation. I didn’t think UH would have any financial liability unless it was playing, in which case they would only be responsible for purchasing a certain amount of tickets. ????

    3-Prong…

I always thought it was owned and run by ESPN… sponsored by Sheraton Hawaii… and each team got paid a certain amount. No more. No less. My understanding is that UH doesn’t make a whole lot from the Bowl but it does get good exposure. Furthermore… not being in the bowl makes the bowl harder to sustain and should ESPN withdraw it’s support… …

Mr. Tanabe’s vote should count. He was alive when he cast it. Its not like he voted prematurely. He voted during an absentee/early voting period. Funny thing is, had the news story not been run, it probably would have counted.

This talk of whether or not Cody VA is “local” or not…

He’s probably lived in Hawaii longer than several Tsaikos and Tsaikettes have (who have also come from places other than Hawaii)! And yet we somehow look at them as locals just ’cause of the support they give to Hawaii. Hmmm…

During the VA years, Cody was on a youth soccer team with my youngest son, the entire VA family would be there, except for the dad, who would be preparing for that night’s UH game. The mom and siblings were always there, supporting Cody. Once, during the losing streak, VA was there (maybe a bye week) off to the side, listening to college football on his transistor radio.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Many of us may know of some keiki o ka aina, who were born in Hawaii, educated for the most part in Hawaii, worked in Hawaii and even buried in Hawaii, who never cared for UH football – might be strange but true.

There are many who were born here in Hawaii, educated for the most part in Hawaii and now on the Mainland.

All of these folks have some of the local values that they grew up with whether they are here or abroad.

I would classify all of them as being “local”

  222. papajoe2 October 25, 2012 7:29 am

Pomai, no predictions this week. I picked the Warriors to win in the begining of the year and they got blown out. So I changed my predictions the last 2 games, picking the other teams and they still lost. What got me was I almost won the prediction contest by picking New Mexico. That I would never like to win, predicting the score for the other team to win. I always cheered for UH and always will. Go Warriors!

  223. A-House October 25, 2012 7:37 am

thank you again for the birthdays wishes!!!!!!!

  224. A-House October 25, 2012 7:39 am

It seems that the veery first offensive UH play is a pass to the flat – usually to Stuzman – one game the corner will back pedal and when the ball is snapped, rush forward, intercept for a pik-6

will see is Chow does the same thing, again!

just talked to Donald Duck, I mean DPK, on the phone, he still looks good on the phone. missing everyone but happy all is well.

long season for the Warriors, had a great talk with Coach Lumpkin at OCCC the other night, no neither of us were locked up, we were locked in to bringing the Good News of Jesus to those that are locked up. we were talking about the football team, and how painfully obvious we have been lacking in recruiting for the trenches, very sore.

right now it’s like we have the ingredients for a chinese dinner, but we have an italian chef from sicily….and we’re telling him…’what, cook something good!’ and that’s the way of the epicurean world on the football field……auwe…..gonna get better…..hey….even Weber State won last week, so I know CSU is in the radar scope of our Warriors…..

UH Rainbow Warriors @ UNLV Runnin’ Rebels

    December 1 in VEGAS!!!

The Rebels are a top 10 team this year and the Thomas and Mack will probably be sold out (19,000 capacity).

I’ll be there… Hope you all can make it. Should be an awesome atmosphere.

  234. Pauoa Boy October 25, 2012 8:31 am

Edwards should get NFL looks easily as he is easily the best player on the team. He has better coverage skills than Mouton had and is faster. Too bad the defense isn’t half as good as it should be or he’d really be getting some serious looks.

Cody is a great local kid. Years ago I signed up my then 7 year old for his first baseball camp at UH before he even played in a league just so he could learn some basics before signing up for little league. On the first day of camp all the kids were assigned to a team with names like Dodgers, Giants, etc. When the introductions by the coaches were finished and all the boys were told to follow the coach of their respective teams to their places on the field my son was left all alone at home plate as he had no clue what the teams meant or what was happening. I watched from the stands in anguish as no coach came to find out where he belonged on this first day of camp. Cody turned and noticed my son was lost and came back to check on him. He noticed the team name on his tag and told my son to follow him as they were both on the same team. Cody is the same age as my son but even at a young age showed amazing leadership skills as he went out of his way to guide my son through his introduction to baseball. Cody went on to have a great career in football and baseball through his years at Kalaheo and my son who found his love in baseball went on to have an all-star career at Kailua and always shared a smile and utmost respect for Cody through years of competing against each other. Cody is not only a local but a winner in my book.
