On schedule

Maybe UH will have a permanent AD in place next month.

Maybe it won’t.

What is certain is that one of the usual duties of a UH AD — football scheduling — will be in the control of UH coach Norm Chow.

In every other UH sport, the head coach is in charge of scheduling. Chow didn’t have a say in next year’s schedule, which already is locked with five non-confrence games and the Mountain West Conference’s reservations. But after that, he will get to fill in the pukas.

In 2013, UH plays the three service academics. Chow joked: “We get to compete for the Commander-In-Chief’s trophy.”

Carl Clapp called to say there could be changes to the 2013 dates, so I’ll withdraw the sked I posted until further notice.

Happy birthday to Renee Archer Nakashima.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

While the AD did do football scheduling, it some respects it makes more sense for the football coach to make the schedules.

I assume that the Air Force Academy will one of the “MWC opponents”.

Problem with too much discipline and not enough individuality. If no one is to shine, then all have to be on par with each other. So, if there are those that cannot rise to the occasion, does that mean that the others have to come down to their levels? Can those with superior skills take the easier road to make it easier for their buddies and take the edge off of their own performance so that the others won’t look so bad. Sort of like a work environment where you don’t overachieve so that your colleagues don’t look bad. …

    Das not good.

Too much discipline negates the ability for an individual to RISE to the occasion? My God… tell that to an armed serviceman/woman who has to shoot and kill their way to save the rest of their squad from an ambush when everyone else is injured…. The military instills the HIGHEST discipline and Im not even in the military to know this.

To a lesser extent, there are programs at UH other than football that has always instilled a lot of discipline, MORE than what the alleged lack of discipline from previous football coaching regimes had and yet individual players from those programs RISE to the occasion when needed or when challenged.

If people don’t overachieve, that is their own fault. If people cannot distinguish the importance of discipline and the drive to perform at their highest and always wanting to be better than everyone else… then there is something wrong with the wiring in that person’s brain.

Is there any proof that this football coaching doesn’t encourage players to RISE to the occasion as individuals while maintaining maximum discipline under this staff’s guidelines?

    1-5, 5-1, 0-6, 1-11, etc…

Either way, who can really respect a coach that allows a player, any player regardless of superior athletic skills and natural ability to “take the easy road”???

The coaches have no say when it comes to MWC schedule. I looks to me that we may see more back to back away games. When we travel to Navy, it leaves a possible triple back to back game schedule. 7 conference games could also mean 4 away and 3 here for the MWC games, since no one wants to come here to play. I know it seems negative but with this year’s schedule, you never know man.

TGIF! In everyday life, discipline helps with focus because it removes distractions and can help make certain basic things kind of automated or structured. Automatic, right, but how did you get there? And not everyone learns about this kind of stuff or makes themselves practice it by college age. 🙂

Think about how you get ready in the morning, get in your car and drive. Because you allow yourself the right amount of time to accomplish your tasks (and maybe oversee those of kids/spouse) you are out the door, the last one out locks the door, you have your coffee and you drive to work without micromanaging the route and without running out of gas. You’ve practiced all of this and stayed focused so you don’t have to stress or “think through every step” anymore. So when you are on the road, you can enjoy the sunrise/sunset and maybe some good music in the background without a rush because you aren’t 10 minutes behind because you didn’t follow a structure before leaving or you didn’t get your stuff ready the night before.

@#19, Kevin…you are right. There are many real life examples of lack of discipline throughout military, sports, and life itself. One of the keys is “knowledge” and that is why the student-athletes will come to understand better the rationale for discipline. I told my kids the reason I yell and scold is not because I like to, rather, as your parent it is my job to keep you safe until you are old enough to think on your own. Listen and pay attention to me and it may save your life.

Ive been reading all kinds of discussions about why the team is struggling, people challenging and questioning Coach Chow and Co.’s game prep, in game adjustments, play calling, personnel decisions, etc…

Seems all like fair game type questioning.

But then you have people just reaching for anything and everything with regards to hair cuts, names on jerseys, team walking out arm in arm, blah blah blah…

Occam’s razor.. Football is played in the field and preparations to win are done on the practice field and in the coaching offices and film room.

    Kevin,

Ever worked for a Japanese corporation? Especially in the 80’s? I have. Several, in Japan, for 8 years. I was a seisha-in kakari-cho for medium sized corporation. One of the biggest criticisms about the Japanese School System and work environment was having “too much discipline” because it stifled creativity and greater innovation. 出る釘は打たれる – Deru kugi wa utareru (A nail that sticks out will be hammered down.). Each time I tried something new, I was told, “Japanese cannot/will not/do not do that.” My response was always, “That’s all right, cause I only look Japanese. I’m American and I can/will/do.” Thing was, whenever I succeeded, I was resented. I was the nail that stuck out.

And kaizen.. kaizen.. kaizen… worked great when they had little or no competition in the two areas of quality and price. Not the case anymore.

I can see discipline in the military as very important where sticking your head up at the wrong time can get you shot by friendly fire. But football is a far cry from the military. Life and death is considerably different from win or lose.

When I was living in Japan, I used to go jogging along this river and would often pass by this elementary school. During the winter months, they would have the kids running around outside for PE without their shirts. The reasoning was to build their fortitude. The practice has since been stopped.

    Discipline:

  32. Kevin October 19, 2012 8:51 am

    Made,

I skipped reading over the part where you talk about working for a Japanese corporation because just like military life, it has NOTHING to do with you questioning the need for the kind of discipline that this football coaching staff has and the effect it has on people individually rising above others to succeed.

Plus I already mentioned how different college sports is from military life by mentioning strict discipline from other coaches at UH Manoa and how it hasn’t effect their ability to have players individually rise to the occasion.

One former student-athlete in one of the sports I am mentioning said how strict this coach was on them and had a reputation of being very demanding. Everyone had to essentially set their personal clocks 20 minutes early every time they had a team meeting, practice, game, etc… They had to look uniform on road trips, on the way to the field, to and from practices, etc…

Yet it didn’t stop this coaches teams past and present from having individuals stick out and rise to the occasion when needed and this player credits said coach for the discipline they have today in their personal life.

If you truly believe that the amount of discipline this coaching staff has instilled on the student-athletes, then I believe you cannot use your own personal experiences in a non collegiate athletic competitive field as a truly “fair” assessment.

  33. Chicken Grease October 19, 2012 8:53 am

From Webster’s New World Pocket Dictionary, 4th edition:

    dis’ci-pline (-plin) n. 1 orderly training or conduct 2 punishment –v.. 1 train; control 2 punish — dis’ci-plinar’y a.

Make sure you use the right words, fine people. 🙂

We have a similar saying in the United States of America here, madein’; that is, “the squeaky wheel gets the most attention/most oil.” Mmmph. Church.

Let’s not forget the decidedly Japanese-American colloquialism, shikataganai (“can’t be helped”; as in “Coach Chow’s first season as UH football head coach AND first year as A head coach and, so, if you don’t see the wins that you expect to see [miteru], well, ‘can’t be helped.'”).

Trust in Chow. Lest you be, “oh, that Coach Chow is a GENIUS” ’bout, oh, 3 years from now.

  39. papajoe2 October 19, 2012 9:11 am

If you played on a team that voted for a team captain and the coach not only voided that, but also had that person not suite up for a home game, maybe the fun in playing would disappear. Afraid to take the lead or speaking out because you too may be disiplined, makes for a losing atmosphere. Losing by lopsided scores also adds to the atmosphere, hense the saying, “losing begats losing”. Maybe even the drastic changes in how things are done makes for a bad attitude or atmosphere, thus adding to the losing ways. Could be that is why the newer players, including freshmen, are getting more and more playing time for they never experienced the way of the former regime. I want for the Warriors to be successful as much or even more than the average fan, but I also want them, as individuals, to enjoy themselves in palying D1 football here. To me, it seems like something is missing from this team. They don’t seem to be having fun. Maybe that’s just the way anyone would react when getting blown out. We need for them to relax and have fun and enjoy themselves. I know that when the coach gets more players used to his system of coaching, they will enjoy themselves more and be more successful in terms of being competitive. I just have a hard time being patient and waiting for that to happen.

  40. Chicken Grease October 19, 2012 9:17 am

A Grease doesn’t know — none of us do; unless there’s an insider beyond Tsai on this board — truly know the state of disciplinarism over at the football complex (pardon the pun) over at Manoa.

But, keep this in mind, true believers — keep this in mind — and that is, you get too much traction sliding down the hill if you retain a rubber a5$. Never forget.

  41. SteveM October 19, 2012 9:18 am

    Good morning everyone!

Discipline– I notice the team is not penalized a lot for “personal foul”, “unsportsmanlike conduct”, and “excessive celebration” type infractions.

Playing with more discipline than the emotion that causes such penalties? In any event, we don’t want those penalties on the field.

  46. Old School Dave October 19, 2012 9:37 am

I’d like to see UH schedule a home and home with Utah. The two schools haven’t played each other since the break up of the old WAC in 98. Maybe NC’s connections with Kyle Whittingham could result in a home and home series. The Utes (2-4) are feeling the effects of tougher week to week competition in the Pac-12 compared to when they were in the MWC.

Players shouldn’t be worrying about the schedule, it is out of their control. They should be focused on playing football regardless of who, what, when, and where they are going to be playing. Road games, etc… they can take its toll but it’s nothing new to what Hawaii football isnt already accustomed to. Would more home games be beneficial to the team and the fans, hell yes, but it doesn’t matter you still gotta play no matter where you are.

  60. gobows October 19, 2012 10:54 am

  61. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2012 10:59 am

I think the players are having as much fun as one could possibly despite the poor record.

I don’t think bringing back dread locks or even big hair of the 80’s will add or take away from the fun on the field imo.

  62. Pauoa Boy October 19, 2012 11:03 am

I don’t mind the discipline that Coach Chow is trying to instill but at the same time it really does seem like the element of having fun and enjoying playing the game is lost with this team. I mean there really is no emotion on the field during games. They come out on the field holding arms walking together (boring), the haka is lacksadasical like they’re just doing it just to do it. There’s no Blaze Soares to just nail guys and get amped up, no Chad Owens to get nuts after a crazy return or clutch catch, no truck stick action like a Nate Ilaoa. It seems like even when Mike Edwards makes a huge return, there’s no real emotional boost to feed off of. It’s like it lasts for that particular play then dissipates and back to same ol same ol. I don’t know if it’s just me but this team just seems super boring to watch. Boring entrance, boring style of play, maybe the players might feel the same?

  63. madeinhawaii October 19, 2012 11:14 am

    iwwthm,

Not talking about the hair, really…talking more about the kind of play, expression, character, and behavior each player exuded… Nate and Leonard were more like rovers with good speed and instinct. Every good smack.. every take down always seemed to be followed by the roar of a lion — by player or fans… always the crowd went crazy… Bess was more of a technician.. precise and deceptive with sure hands — he brought out the Ooohs and Aaahs… Then there was also Reagan Mauia (another long haired dude) and his pancake blocks… Blaze Soares who seemed like he was breaking all the bones in his body in random abandonment just to get to his target … I miss those kind of players… maybe next season?

  64. Derek October 19, 2012 11:22 am

June Jones and his Mustangs rung up 72 against Houston. Reminds me of when Rolo threw for 8 TDs and UH put up I think 72 points against BYU. And I guess Timmy Chang who works with the QBs did a nice job too. My wife was asking who is that oriental looking guy on the sideline? Actually, I thought Houston would win the game since SMU lost last week against lowly Tulane and the Cougars had won 3 straight coming in, but too many Houston turnovers spelled doom.

    There was a stat

  65. LizKauai October 19, 2012 11:27 am

    HAPPY ALOHA FRIDAY!

Discipline is self-imposed… on and off the field.

Football, the way I like it, is FUN, CREATIVE, STIMULATING TEAMWORK.

I think the players play better when they are inspired.

Hope the coaches bring that to the table.

  66. Bryson October 19, 2012 11:35 am

    Re:61

I paid close attention to the players on the sideline and they seemed pretty unenthusiastic about the game…at one point after a turnover instead of the QB who is the field general firing up his teammates he was all the way on the otherside away from his oline and wr’s….I really liked the leadership qualities in guys like Colt who was always getting his team fired up on the bench and got the crowd to make noise when we were on D he would be standing on the bench waiving a towel getting the crowd going…

  67. RedZone October 19, 2012 11:37 am

ROK soldiers that I served with were very happy to be attached to the american units. I witnessed the training of the regular korean soldiers and you might call it brutal. With my own eyes I witnessed some of their training. If you’ve been to Korea you would know that there are a lot of hills and valleys. On one training exercise I saw a unit leader blow a whistle. You would see everyone running down a hill and up the other. Behind them was someone with a stick. He was chasing and hitting the person who was last. It was not unusual for me to see someone with bruises. But this was back in the early 70s and that is how they trained. Everwhere they went they walked and I remember some spitting at me as I drove by them in my jeep. My ROK friend told me that they were jealous and thought that american soldiers had it too easy and were soft.

  68. Shoko October 19, 2012 11:44 am

    57. Nope, never served with or trainied with “ROK” soldiers. Only experience with those soldiers was from afar. All I saw was 6 or 7 guys stretched out on two horizontally placed polls parallel to one another while another guy, I assume a drill instructor, was hitting the back of their legs with a wooden beam. Seems like a very thin line between discipline and torture when it comes to training. If you served and trained with ROK soldiers, I highly doubt you were going through what these guys were going through.

  69. madeinhawaii October 19, 2012 12:01 pm

    Derek,

4 of SMU’s TD’s were from the Defense… and they threw an interception that gave Houston 1 TD, too.

BUT.. that still leaves 6 from their Offensive Effort… and a net of -1 TD from their Defense who gave up 5, I think… or was it 6? 😉 must have been a fun game for the first 3 qtrs till SMU put it away in the 4th.

Here’s an excellent post by Warrior Fan Hawkpeter from Down Under…. (taken from SportsHawaii) http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=43223

The concern over the current injury rate could be broken down into two considerations; General Physical Preparation (GPP) and Specific Physical Preparation (SPP). Additionally, some phenomena are generally common throughout football, and some are specific to UH this year.

    Generally

Football players are in fact prepared very very poorly in my opinion. Yes this includes the most prestigious and well-funded schools. This is a result of a number of phenomena that occur simultaneously.

    a) The athletes are pre-sorted, which leads to a lot of false positives. The genetically elite can still beat the genetically sub-elite even if they have poor general training habits. You can do stupid things with great athletes and win; this falsely vindicates the training methods.

    b) The culture of football has a ‘get after it’ tradition of preparation. This tradition has always tried to emulate models which focus on strict chain of command flow. This prioritization will always overlook the task of preparing each individual player optimally. I once acted as a stunt double in action sequences of an ESPN movie on The Junction Boys. Based on a true story, this theme of ‘breaking players down’ and trying to establish chain of command, team bonding and mental toughness still occurs. Your doctor is a smart guy, but his knowledge is deep and narrow, do not ask him how to fix your tv. A football coach knows his X’s and O’s, don’t ask him how to prepare the general physical elements of a player.

    c) We are still grazing on the low slopes of sporting preparation. There is still a tremendous influence of therapy education modeling and commercial fitness interest. Therapy influences lead to a tendency for treating healthy athletes as being sick or injured before they really are and commercial influences will push gimmicky placebos onto trainers and athletes in order to make money. The therapist is skilled at making a sick person average, not an average person elite, commercial interest sells wish thinking concepts to the gullible. The healthy athlete needs neither.

    d) Football is a ‘fuzzy’ sport. To understand fuzzy and non-fuzzy sports compare short track speed skating to long track speed skating. In Long track, there are 2 competitors on opposite sides of the rink racing against the clock. All competitors are in a time trial challenge and pitted in a non-direct-adversarial task. There is very little craftiness or tactics on game day that can alter the result. The best physically prepared will win. Short track speed skating is a fuzzy sport. 5 competitors skate simultaneously weaving and darting between 1st to 5th on every corner. Stephen Bradbury famously won Australian’s first winter olympic gold medal when the first 4 competitors fell over on the last corner. The point is that you can win in football in other ways than having the best general physically preparation.

    Specifically

The first observation to make is that due to the physical requirement of the game, ANY team that is struggling with the specific tactical technical football elements of the game will have to work harder physically in order to compete. If you have not mastered your defensive scheme for example, then you are always having to make more difficult tackles and allowing your opponent to build up speed and make contact with you having gained more favourable leverage. This will always involve more injuries to you.

This year, the new staff have taken over a large portion of the conditioning work for the team. In the past, I have been critical of how this ‘conditioning’, or what I would call energy system work, has been prescribed. If you look at the sporting task it is, at its most, (for players who play every snap of either offense or defense) around 70 plays, lasting 4-8 seconds of intensities above 80% for a period of 3 hours. The efforts are grouped in series from 3-12 plays. The energy system requirements are alactic-aerobic, this means that you are either going at full speed or you are jogging at a slow/medium speed and you have periods of recovery for another maximal effort. The locomotion styles vary from player to player but they are of power endurance not aerobic endurance.

All of this means, that players must adapt to the realities of this sporting task. Not all stress is equal or desired. A triathlete is adapted to run, swim, bike long in combination. He is ‘fit’ for that task. He is not generally fit. Fitness is not general, it is specific to realm you are testing it. The triathlete will go into complete cardio-vascular meltdown if asked to chop wood in a 10min race for as fast as he or she can. The big fat woodsman with a gut and a cigarette hanging out the mouth will hardly break a sweat and win comfortably. UH players this year more than any have been asked to adapt to physical tasks which do not match what is required on the field; long runs, endless up-downs, body weight calisthenics in multiple stations. The thing that most coaches and fans do not get or are comfortable with is that power athletes look like the laziest athletes in the world because they require significant rest periods of low activity or inactivity in order to produce high intensities again and again. Making power athletes stand all the time, never sit or be inactive or actually recuperate, is a complete misunderstanding of the sporting task; it is stupid and contemptible.

Worse than that, and here is where the real specifics come into it, the offense has not been prepared in a way that matches what it is trying to do. The OL for example have all lost weight, strength and power output trying to achieve a greater work capacity; this perceived idea of running lots of plays quickly in practice, hustling up to the line, getting more reps in. Everyone who has watched the practices will testify to this. In the game however, the offensive tactics have been to consume the clock, run less total plays by both teams, run in between the tackles and be physically dominant or at least competitive. The players are having trouble because they are beat down from this attempt to hustle, lose weight, play through injury and adapt to a high practice tempo. This is incoherent. Add to that, the new technical-tactical demands of learning a new system and it leads to a drop in competitiveness. Because it’s harder to make the play work, you will see more injuries; working harder at the same job will always expose players to more injuries.

Most of the misunderstanding comes from a desire to access a high state of mental preparedness. Masochistic training is prescribed, and it is being prescribed by a coaching fraternity of sadism. Some players actually like it, this is why I call it masochism. They think that pushing themselves until they vomit is a good thing. Garbage bins are famously positioned around the field so players can empty their stomach once they have gone over their lactic threshold even though in the sporting task this would never happen. The coaches comply, acting out what was done to them in the past and emulating what they perceive as best practice; that’s what they do at such-and-such and they won a National Championship, ergo, we shall do it too; in fact we’re going to go even harder! Its never questioned whether or why its a good thing in the first place.

The fundamental error is the belief that performance, be it mental aptitude, confidence, will to win, jumping ability, strength, energy system capacity or tackling, does not need to be stressed to complete failure in order to improve. You do not need to keep going until you fail. In fact this will cause regression because you cannot recover to a more optimal state. Studying film all night until your eyes are blood shot, running up a hill until you vomit, lifting in the weight room until crumple under the bar and running plays until you can’t block any more are all examples of over stimulus. The smart coach keeps the athlete just below the failure point for the longest possible period so that hightened states of performance are reached with patience and persistence. Claiming these eventual bounties bring wins, confidence and personal excellence……. right now, my observation is that this is being missed.

Heh. Aure these were soldiers training? Wrrrrrrrrh wrrrrrrrh wrrrrrrrrrrrrh! 🙂

Speaking of discipline (again)….or lack thereof in the case of Wyoming coach Christensen’s post-game confrontation with AF coach Calhoun. I dunno, but Christensen should be suspended for a game, instead of the verbal reprimand the MWC came down with.

mih, I understand what hawkpeter is saying. When I was coaching in high school, the head coach knew something similar of what hp stated. We had one of our former players come home after graduation from college to help us. He was working at UH under Tommy Heffernan and I always wondered why we weren’t working the kids as hard as when he played for us. I guess his way of training was more efficient than our “old” way was, in condusive to our sport. We were very, very successful in our sport and they still are.

  78. SAWARRIOR October 19, 2012 1:14 pm

chow has to balance discipline with some aloha or he will lose this team.

  79. Independent Thinker October 19, 2012 1:14 pm

The hillarity from chow’s mouth never stops and that is what I like most about him.

Under chow, UH is not even in contention for the “Brah, we neva get dirty lickins’ last week” Trophy, and now he says UH is gonna compete for the Commander’s Trophy.

This is sum funny shiz. Keep the reports coming, ST. Thanks for the laughs.

Interesting comment yesterday afternoon during the Oregon-Arizona St. game. They were talking about Oregon scoring at least 30+ points in 22 consecutive games and they showed the some other teams that have done well. The 2006-2007 Hawaii teams scored 30+ points in 20 consecutive games. That was pretty impressive, but then again that was the best of times in UH football history. Now, our team struggles to score, or should I say we struggles to stop the opponents. We need talented defensive linemen badly in numbers first and foremost.

Repubic of Korea (ROK) military powers decided, after seeing the Turks in the Korean Conflict, that their soldiers/marines would be like them.

Thus, their “tough training” and the removal of body parts in Nam – some made leis of ears and noses to scare the Viet Cong – by the “Tiger Division”.

I believe the US joint field commander said very little to discourage descreating dead soldiers. If he did, the ROK paid no attention to his directive.

    Hey Pauoa Boy:

Are you saying that “Does anyone need to use the bathroom?” doesn’t fire you up to go out and hit someone? I once heard Mr. Von Appen give his pregame speech in the locker room. It was “Gentlemen, prepare to win.” Then UH went out and got slaughtered. Still, no matter this year, we have to wait and see what Coach Chow comes up with next year before we – me at least – make any judgments on the guy. He deserves that, at least.

  98. Pauoa Boy October 19, 2012 2:44 pm

    Manoa Mist,

Howzit, I just feel like the team is just boring and show no emotion. Just like Coach, he seems to have the same scowl look on the sidelines and shows no enthusiasm or emotion. I mean where are the leaders of this team, PaiPai, Miah etc… to get everyone amped up. Seems like they are all quiet types with the same low key demeanor. I know my man Tony Grimes can get nuts but we need some killahz on the team to go for broke already!

I’ve learned that continuous blogging has most people thinking their own **** doesn’t stink.

Whether it’s the “koolaiders” with rose-colored glasses or the so-called ‘realists’ … everyone thinks their point of view or approach is the best.

Both sides also tell each other fo shut up too whether either wants to admit it or not.

Both sides do the same thing just in different ways.

Human nature to NOT like opposing views in some fashion one way or another.

The sooner we accept that the better it is and people can focus on other things than trying to change the view of someone they dont even know personally and will probably never run into.

I was on the koolaid side more than anything and I realized it was equally arrogant to expect people to accept my view as it was those who are so-called ‘realists’ that “call it as they see it” are.

But then you have this side group consisting of one person with a mental problem and stalker-like social skills and a pension for making personal comments about players and coaches full of lies and falsified interactions. 😆

Home based business opportunity can involve you selling products for a company to get comimmion or it can involve you introducing people to products or services for a commission. That’s where a Grease gets his special soda pops. Seriously 🙂 .

    Hey, Kevin:

One of the student trainers looks really familiar. Was wondering if any former softball players are now student trainers? If so, that would be kind of cool. Then again, I’m at the age were a lot of people look like other people.

    #113,

Everybody got their own opinion, to me I could care less whether someone agrees or disagrees to what is being said. Some have facts and logic to back up their response and the rest just talk to hear themselves speak. Some like to jump on the bandwagon of what another says, some don’t…I mean to each his own. I agree with some of what is said and at times I don’t whether you are a friend or foe it doesn’t matter. People nowadays are too sensitive and can’t take criticism well, then that’s a personal problem. We all love the game of football, love our Warrior team to death no matter what kine pilikia we are all bitching, moaning, or complaining about. It’s a football blog, where football talk occurs whether you like what someone is saying or not, it don’t matter. We all here for one purpose to talk about our Warrior team whether good or bad… So like I was saying if people don’t like what is being said just read over and ignore, which is what I do to almost everything aside from the football talk.

  142. Slugger October 19, 2012 7:14 pm

    Hey there, Slugger,

You, by any chance, going be at The Castle of Crossed Destinies later on at 9pm? Tha’s a Grease’ pick for THE HIFF film this Fall.

What else you saw? Let Me Out (S. Korea) is the best thing I’ve seen this festival # 32.

  144. Chicken Grease October 19, 2012 7:18 pm

Oh, my God slugger — did we just do more of a remote Jedi mind connection or more Prof’ X using Cerebro?

  145. Chicken Grease October 19, 2012 7:23 pm

In addition, a Grease has seen so far:

Sister (France). Nutty. If you know the French film thingees, this fil has it all.

Therame Romae (Japan), which everyone has seen, seemingly.

Eight Rangers (Japan), see above, earlier 3pm-ish post.

Westside Tango (Taiwan). Noit as terrible as Sister, but, a Grease nearly walked out of this motha’.

Some others, too. I better leave the house already.

  146. 3-Prong October 19, 2012 8:03 pm

Speaking of the HIFF, the documentary ONE TEAM, will be shown tomorrow at the Dole Cannery at 6:00pm. The Iolani Raiders Booster Club funded the entire project which explores the roots of the One Team philosophy that continues to drive the schools athletics teams today. You will hear the words of the legendary Father Bray brought to life and see interviews with the late Coach Eddie Hamada and others that continue the tradition.

  148. madeinhawaii October 19, 2012 8:09 pm

Coaches are at a pay level that makes them fair game to criticism.. welcome and unwelcome. They are big boys and can handle it. If not, they should rethink their careers.

The players on the other hand are amateurs, young adults still finding their way. When it comes to them, criticize the play, not the player. (Unless of course, you go up to them when no one else is around and/or looking and tell them right to their faces.)

‘SOK, mo808. It sure is a cattle situation in this theatre. One of the more notable films of this HIFF 32 and they use one of the smaller theatres, ai!!! Might be a studio decision, film so relatively new and all.

A Grease has — once again — his preferred seat. Priority membership has its privileges, hhahahaa, gomen 🙂 .

    ST,

Cant think of any recent softball alums that are UH trainers now. Maybe a friend of some players you saw around at the softball games?

J-Rod stay at Lamar as their pitching coach, Ricketts is busy with the UH nursing program, think Baughman is working with Punahou? Grimes went from Boston University to an assistant at North Carolina State.

  161. Kevin October 19, 2012 9:25 pm

    Great night for Wahine Soccer!

    Weather was perfect and cool.

Bows 3-2 Final over UC Davis.

  162. cocobean October 19, 2012 9:34 pm

Some mainland stadiums play Sweet Caroline to have fans sing along.

Iz’s version of Country Roads is beginning to be a fan favorite locally. More people are singing along to the chorus. “Country roads take me home to da place where I belong……

Garanz a lot more people will join in at the next game.

Not so much a theme song but a feel good song that fans are familiar with. Catchy chorus with a bit of nostalgia.

  163. cocobean October 19, 2012 10:06 pm

Discipline is a good thing. Applaud Chow for setting guide lines. I know he’s trying but he must inject some emotion into the team. I’m not talking about the rah rah type emotion but it doesn;t hurt to inject a little of it every so often.

I talking about any emotional attachment to the sense of TEAM. An all for one, one for all type feeling. The Military Academies would call it Esprit de Corps. It’s about enthusiasm, devotion and a sense of honor. It’s a team thing, a group thing. It’s something the coaches can appeal to to really the troops.

It’s nothing new. It’s like Red Raider for Life kind of thing or Iolani’s One Team concept. It’s about pride. The lickins we’ve been taking should have injected a sense of anger and steely determination to the team leaders. I’m waiting for some players to step up to rally and lead the troops. Where’s our Juniors and Seniors? The team needs leaders.

#157 I know Jeff Ulbrich and UCLA has been in contact with Jeremiah Taleni a 6’0″ 320 DT out of Kailua H.S. He’s been a disruptive force all season for the Kailua DL despite playing both ways and almost every down due to the Surfriders small squad.

  172. just saying October 20, 2012 3:45 am

I think norm chow should take a look at graves with running the option and the wildcat on short yards situations to give his offense a boost . Graves could have the option of quaterback sneak or running to the outside to spread the opposing defense.

  173. just saying October 20, 2012 4:32 am

We will see if norm chows old school power offense works, he always talks about getting better athletes to run his system, but hopefully realizes that he is not at usc ucla byu. One of the reasons byu did well at byu was all the the teams was running the ball while byu was throwing the ball, which is why he could recruit quaterbacks and receivers.I thought he was bringing his passing offense to hawaii, but seems to be trying to be a running team first. A lot of teams are getting more mobile quaterbacks and different offensive schemes to make up for the bigger athletes that big time colleges get.I hope he thinks outside the box and adjust his scheme, instead of just got to play harder or execute better

    Chicken Grease,

I was in the Rush line for “The Castle of Cross Destinies” & got in 1st. Protector was in the other a line a couple over. Too bad we don’t know what you look like. We coulda had a Tsaiko get-together. Not going tonight cuz my halau has a hula program at the Hawaii Theatre. But I’ll be there on Sunday for (FREE) “Ua Mau Ke Ea” & “Tenchi”. I’ll wear my green UH “Hawaii” UA tee. Maybe we’ll meet.

Gotta go to work…just for a few hours…

No time to even read the SA… sorry, ST…

    hi ho

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Happy birthday, Kinda Shy!

  184. Slugger October 20, 2012 6:11 am

    wafan,

HIFF tickets are sold at a counter inside the movie theatre lobby. No box office. This is a once a year (well, twice since there is a Spring festival) movie fest. I’m a HIFF member.

  185. kuhio October 20, 2012 7:02 am

I hope Coach Chow or someone from his staff was at the Kahuku/Waianae game. Lots of D1 players there especially that Kennedy kid from Waianae. We could use him now. Go Warriors.

  186. Chicken Grease October 20, 2012 7:52 am

    # 184 — right on, Slugger. Glad you got in. Hope you got decent seating? Were you like a dark blue polo and jeans and with a friend or something.

Castle . . . was well done, a Grease thinks. Insanely great slow-burn love story against the backdrop of alternative history (women Shögun fot starters).

The sold out Heso Mori (Japan) and S. Korean Horror Stories up on deck for a Grease and his Greasian pals today.

YOU TWILIGHT FANS: seems as if the Asian (the apparent ONLY Asian) from the Twilight films, Justin Chon, was at the screening of one White Frog on Thursday at HIFF. Gals who normally wouldn’t watch a film like White Frog (as they are Twilight fans) were there in doves and fawning, all that,, from what a Grease understands. So, he might be making the rounds these last few days watching films, I dunno.

  187. kev-1 October 20, 2012 8:14 am

Good game going on between LSU and Texas Tech. Turnovers are going to hurt Tech’s chances, but the defense is keeping them in it. Worth watching for those interested.

  188. 3-Prong October 20, 2012 8:15 am

The ONE TEAM documentary will be shown today at the HIFF today at 6:00 today at the Cannery Theatre. Here is the writeup from the HIFF website. “In 1932, Father Kenneth A. Bray landed in Hawaii with a mission to guide the fledgling Iolani School to athletic glory. Promoting the idea of ‘One Team,’ a philosophy designed to promote discipline among his players, Bray started a revolution in Hawaii sports, mentoring future coaching legends such as Eddie Hamada, Larry Ginoza, and Hugh Yoshida. One of his disciples Merv Lopes, guided then Division III Chaminade University to the biggest upset in college basketball history when they defeated defending Division 1 national champion Virginia.”

  189. kev-1 October 20, 2012 8:21 am

    Good morning Mr. Chicken Grease!

I have not been able to participate in the excitement that is the HIFF, but just wanted to comment that I had never been in to foreign or independent films until I met my wife. We went to see City of God when we were dating and I was hooked. My experience with, and database of such films is still limited, but enjoy them.

    You enjoy!

  190. Chicken Grease October 20, 2012 8:29 am

Right on, kev-1. Film festivals also show films from the U.S. That decidedly advance screening of the Oscar-attempting Cloud Atlas (currently sold out for Saturday . . . or is it Sunday?) Being one of ’em.

But, yeah, a Grease mostly goes for the foreign, mostly East Asian films (Japan, Korea, Honk King, etc.).

It’s great fun. Is exciting. Hard to believe, but, film fests are that (a Grease has been to Japanese, HK, Amsterdam, other lands film fests).

    GO WARRIORS.
