Multi-talented player fond of UH; $$ game in 2016?

By Stephen Tsai on October 17, 2012

Fitou Fisiiahi of Kaiser High said he told the UH coaches he will accept their football scholarship offer. It is considered to be a soft commitment at this point because he will not be able to sign a letter of intent until Feb. 5, 2014 and, in the meantime, he would be open to fielding “other options.” Oregon State and Utah have shown interest. Still, it is a significant initial step for the Warriors in their pursuit of one of […]

Wide receiver Marcus Kemp of Layton High in Utah has confirmed he accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. “I really like the coaches and the program,” Kemp said. Kemp said he is 6 feet 4, 180 pounds and is capable of running 40 yards in sub-4.6 seconds. Kemp said he turned down two other offers to commit to the Warriors. Kemp said he received the UH offer this past weekend and accepted shortly thereafter. * * * * * […]

By Stephen Tsai on October 15, 2012

Coach Norm Chow today gave approval for linebacker Alema Tachibana to resume practicing with the Warriors while he awaits the outcome of his DUI trial, which was rescheduled until Friday, Nov. 23. He still is not permitted to play in games. Tachibana was not allowed to practice or compete in games after being arrested this past summer. He was prepared to go to trial this afternoon. But police officer called in sick, and the state requested an extension. Tachibana’s lawyer […]

Midway point

By Stephen Tsai on October 14, 2012

It’s halftime in the 2012 season, and like most halftimes this season, the Warriors have a lot to overcome. Slow starts. Self-inflictd mistakes. Third-down breakdowns, on both sides. Stopping an opponent’s running game. Tackling a running quarterback. Did we mention self-inflicted mistakes? Well, at least nobody is complaining about clock management, extra-point attempts or third-quarter blahs this year. The thing about growing pains is there is pain. Still, there have been bright spots, such as: MVP — The two fumbled […]

Game day: New Mexico

By Stephen Tsai on October 13, 2012

Enjoy this one. The Warriors, who last played at home three weeks ago, won’t play here for another four weeks after tonight’s homecoming game against New Mexico. That’s a long time between tailgates. * * * * * The Warriors are breaking out their new green jerseys. On the  back is the word “Imua.” Yep, we’re still talking about the UH Warriors. * * * * * Yep, on the morning of home games, the Warriors do a team walk. […]

Freaky Friday

By Stephen Tsai on October 12, 2012

New Mexico traveled to Hawaii on a charter paid by the Warriors. The Warriors do not use charter flights between here and the mainland. New Mexico is taking advantage of the Hawaii exemption and playing 13 games — no byes — this season. The Warriors are playing a 12-game regular season. * * * * * * After Saturday’s game, the coaches are heading out to do their heaviest in-season recruiting. They already have made some offers to junior-college players. […]

BJ Penn will be honorary captain

By Stephen Tsai on October 11, 2012

BJ Penn will serve as the Warriors’ honorary captain for this Saturday’s homecoming game against New Mexico, UH coach Norm Chow told the Warrior Beat last night. Chow said he finalized arrangements with Penn and his management last night. The move is inspiring and fitting. Penn and the Warriors share the same introduction song: Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole’s “Hawaii ’78.” This might be the most intense coin flip in UH history. Click here: Warriors/Hawaii ’78 video. * * * * * Happy […]

Pu‘u-Robinson out 2 weeks

By Stephen Tsai on October 10, 2012

Defensive lineman Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson today will undergo surgery to repair a fractured middle finger on his left hand. He suffered the injury in the first quarter against San Diego State, a game in which he made his first UH start. He played the rest of the game with his hand in a wrap, finishing with nearly 40 snaps. X-rays showed the fracture. The initial prognosis was missing between four and six weeks. Now it appears he might only miss Saturday’s […]
