Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

Averill to train with national team next month

Ran into Averill while he was helping out with Kevin Wong’s Spike & Serve clinic. He said he’ll be going to Anaheim to train with the  national team beginning July 8 for a week or so. U.S. finishes out group play July 6, then back for a while before the final round in Italy July 16-20.  

U.S. falls in 5 to Bulgaria, first World League loss

The U.S. lost for the first time in World League play Saturday at Hoffman Estates, Ill., 26-24, 25-17, 14-25, 13-25, 15-12. Kawika Shoji started the match, played first two sets. Micah Christenson came in for the final three sets. Erik Shoji at libero. U.S. drops to 7-1, Bulgaria 1-7. Americans head to Russia for matches June 27-28. The need one more win to qualify for the final round in Italy.

Christenson started at setter, Kawika Shoji subbed in, finished Set 1 and is in Set 2 Erik Shoji at Libero. Dave Shoji in the stands. He flew out last night after camp at the SSC. Next heads to Girls JOs in Minneapolis June 24-July 3.

 UH is commemorating Shoji’s 40th season with T-shirts and volleyballs. You’ll start seeing ads Monday. Shirt sales start July 1 when UH launches its H-Zone. Volleyball will be sold at the arena when the season starts.

U.S. men hold off Serbia in 5 6-14

The U.S. hung on for a 25-22, 25-12, 26-28, 23-25, 15-13 win tonight in Chicago. Christenson set the entire match, had 32 assists, U.S. hit .417, E. Shoji the libero with 13 digs, 13 serve receptions. . K. Shoji didn’t play Matt Anderson with 29 kills, 3 blocks; Taylor Sander with 21 kills, 5 blocks. Max Holt 11 kills, 3 blocks, 4 aces. UH 5-0. Serbia 4-2.

U.S. men sweep Serbia in World League

U.S. (5-0) off to its best start in World League since 2000, sweeps Serbia 30-28, 25-20, 25-16 in Chicago. Christenson was the setter, had 2 kills, 1 block and 2 aces. K. Shoji in first two sets as serving sub. E. Shoji the libero. Matt Anderson with 22 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Taylor Sander 14 kills and an ace. Speraw only used eight players, K. Shoji the only sub.
